Note from JOHN It’s with great enthusiasm that I put the final touches on our 9th edition of M magazine. My vision to capture this magical place we call Orange County and home has far exceeded our previous issues. Maybe we’ve learned a little through the years but I feel it’s because my passion for this coastal inspired lifestyle has grown. This year has brought many exciting changes for our McMonigle Team, which is approaching an impressive $300 Million of dynamic Orange County real estate thus far in 2016—a 120% year-over-year increase! This is before the record sales price we will set for The Pelicans for an “off market” new build that will close escrow before another New Year of extraordinary promise begins. This strong momentum has led to the formation of our independent brokerage, McMonigle Group Corp, which launched this Fall from our casually chic new office in Corona Del Mar under the talented leadership of Broker Ezra Leyton. Environmental concerns are ever present and we try to respond with a wide range of thoughtful design solutions. Sometimes that’s as simple as building orientation and using natural daylighting and ventilation to create an energy efficient home. There’s been a growing trend in Orange County for organic living which is heartening and we consider it our responsibility to educate our clients on how that lifestyle can be influenced and enhanced by smart architectural design.

Every new project allows us the opportunity to create and design something that will leave a long lasting impact on those directly and indirectly experiencing it. Being able to take part in shaping the future with something so tangible and personal such as a home is special to us and something we’re grateful to be a part of but a fantasy project would not only create a happy client but somehow become a lasting icon of good design and SoCal living. There are few iconic homes in Orange County and it would be beyond cool to have a project regarded in that way some day.
M: WHO IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT? CHRISTOPHER BRANDON: An ideal client would be someone who has an open mind and is willing to go down a path of discovery with us. We also ask that they be trusting of the process. Design is a journey and so much is learned during the process that rarely the first idea is the best one. It’s important for us that our clients understand the “why” behind our designs not just “what” they’re looking at. In order to design well we need to get inside their heads but we also like to get them inside ours as well. Once we get on that level great ideas start flowing from both sides of the table and we have a lot of fun with our clients.
M: WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM OTHER ARCHITECT FIRMS? CHRISTOPHER BRANDON: We’re very proud of our process here at Brandon Architects. We have an experienced and talented team capable of bringing our designs to life throughout the process, from initial 2D sketches to detailed 3D renderings, live interactive animations and even more recently Virtual Reality. Good design is nothing if our clients can’t visualize and follow along on our journey. We strive to keep our clients inspired and emotionally engaged in the project so we have a lot of fun with different ways to present the design and with all the creativity and technology at our office we feel like we excel at just that.

On October 16, 2016, Laguna Art Museum opened a new exhibition to the public; Phillip K. Smith III: Bent Parallel. The exhibitions will close January 15, 2017. As this year’s featured commissioned artist for the museum’s Art & Nature festival (November 3-6), Phillip K. Smith III’s monumental installation Bent Parallel envelopes viewers in light, continuing the artist’s ongoing dialogue with color theory, optics, scale, and technology. Appearing as two intersecting color-field walls, the hinge-like structure merges surfaces to engender a perception of shifting and blending. It creates a third, material-less, zerothickness plane that mixes the adjacent colors and seems to extend the physical bounds of the space. The resulting environment appears simultaneously infinite and finite. Born in Los Angeles in 1972, Phillip K. Smith III received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to the Southern California desert where he was raised. Building upon explorations in the perception of light, color, and space, he creates intensely physical and seemingly ephemeral sculptures. His large-scale, temporary installations include the internationally renowned Lucid Stead (2013) in Joshua Tree, California, and Reflection Field (2014) and Portals (2016), both of which debuted at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The new $60 million facility serves as the company’s premier West Coast destination for the public, including automotive enthusiasts and Porsche customers. Located on the 405 Freeway in Carson, California, convenient to three of the Los Angeles area airports, the 53-acre complex is also the new home of Porsche Motorsport North America. The PEC LA features a driver development track with eight educational modules totaling 4.1 miles, a changing race car exhibit, and a fine-dining restaurant. Guests and corporate groups visiting the new facility can hone their driving skills on courses built to demonstrate the power, responsiveness and safety of Porsche sports cars. The company opened its first $100 million Experience Center and North American headquarters in May 2015 in Atlanta.
