When we first walked into the garden of what was shortly to become our own little patch of Daymer, I had the oddest thought; I didn’t even need to look at the house. I was gazing at the most breathtaking view I had ever seen. From Stepper Point, past Padstow, across Brea Hill and up into the distant, cowfreckled farmland beyond, was an unspoilt panorama of blue, gold and green.

Whether we’re lucky enough to experience this from our own homes, from those that we can rent, or from the hotels, B&Bs and campsites, the point is that it’s only minutes away at most - for everybody.

Oh – and did I mention the food? From the upscale restaurants and delis, via our wonderful local butcher, fishmonger and baker, through to the fish ‘n’ chips and pasty joints, no-one is going to go hungry here! My favourite gourmet treat is to climb round to Big Cave Bay (does everyone call it that?) between Greenaway and Polzeath and to pull shiny, black mussels off the rocks and chuck them straight onto the barbecue for lunch. On the way home, our children coax crabs out of the rockpool crevices – and that’s supper sorted too. Sublime!

It’s no wonder that, every time we leave, a little tradition has developed in our family. When the car is finally packed and the front door locked, I get into the driver’s seat and say, “Bye bye Cornwall. I love you.” “I love you too!” reply the children in unison.

n 2003, I bundled my first ‘clients’ (a press-ganged group of friends) into a 20 year old Minibus with my mate Olly and drove them along the winding road from our Port Isaac B&B to Polzeath for their first surf lesson.

Despite the inevitable late night, and our ‘legendary’ truckers breakfast, every single person came out of the water bright eyed and buzzing with excitement, keen to get in again. That amazing vibe was all the validation I needed, and Wavehunters was born!

Fifteen years on, Wavehunters is considerably more grown up (and hopefully I am, too). We’ve come a long way from a B&B, a van, a few foam boards and dodgy wetsuits. We’re a thriving, family run, family-centred business, offering seven different activities across five locations, with three café booking centres selling Cornish ice cream, locally roasted coffee and our own clothing range. With the help of 6 dedicated full time staff and up to 65 part time staff, we’re putting smiles on 250 faces a day during summer - something I’m incredibly proud to see. I must have got something right, we’re one of the biggest surf schools in the UK! With all of the inevitable changes that come with running a ‘proper’ business, I’ve worked hard to keep one thing the same - it’s still all about having fun, having a go, coming together and sharing the moment. There should always be something for everyone - nothing we do is too serious, elitist or unachievable. Have a go!

SURF

Punctuating Cornwall’s impressive 422 mile coastline are around 400 beaches. Many are renowned surfing hotspots, including our very special home, Polzy! (Also known as Polzeath, or Hayle Bay.) Teaching the sport we love, we’ve learnt one important thing ourselves: everyone learns to surf differently.

Whether you choose a one-to-one, a group lesson or you really want to progress with an immersive week course, our experienced surf coaches will tailor their instruction to you, because we think everyone should be able to experience the joy of riding waves. It’s what we call ‘surf stoke’. If children need some time out from ‘boring grown ups’, they can check-in to our kids club at 10am every morning and we’ll tire them out for you!

SUP

Stand-up paddle-boarding is a super-accessible sport that gets you out on the water in no time. We offer SUP lessons with experienced instructors in both flat-water and surf conditions. Flat water SUPing is an excellent way to explore the coast, experience the water from a different perspective and get close to its marine life, as well as work muscles you never knew you had! We’ll take groups out on an exploratory paddle around the cliffs and coves, sometimes joined by seals, and then cruise back in to the beach.

Surf SUP-ing is an addictive and exhilarating way to ride waves.

The bigger boards and paddle enable you to catch smaller waves and ride them for longer, without having to pop up! The conditions at Daymer Bay really suit SUP-ing, and the waves are less crowded, so we tend to teach from there. Daymer is also the location for our SUP yoga classes, run

by Millie, Wavehunters’ personal fitness trainer.

HIRE

If you want to practice what you’ve learnt, or give something new a try, we have a wide range of surf equipment available to hire all year round from our base on Polzeath beach. Our staff are all local surfers and will offer help and advice to find the gear that’s right to get you in the water; surfboard, wetsuit, SUP, belly board, bodyboard and every accessory you need. This summer we’re offering a hire delivery service within the St Minver parish, so if you find yourself on a different beach without your kit, we’ll deliver it to you.

SEA SAFARI

Dolphins, seals, puffins, weird jellyfish, basking sharks, Devonian rock formations, smuggler’s coves and shipwreck sites … our oneor-two hour sea safari tours are exhilarating for both experienced sea-goers and first-time sailors.

Led by experienced, local seamen, our two 12 seater, 400 horsepower boats get you up close and personal with Cornwall’s unique heritage and stunning wildlife. Few people know this spectacular coastline better than our skippers, all of us are local RNLI crewman or helmsman, so you’ll be in very safe hands.

Setting off from Rock or Padstow, our boats will take you down the bustling camel estuary and out into the Atlantic. The journey will take in Daymer Bay, Polzeath beach, The Rumps, Pentire Head, Puffin Island, the tranquil fishing village of Port Isaac, and everything in between.

I can’t guarantee you’ll see all the possible wildlife on every trip, but you will come away with a new perspective on our coastline and a fresh nugget of information to share in the pub afterwards - every day’s a school day!

In peak season we run our Rock to Padstow or Port Isaac ferry. It’s only available on certain days but it sure is the best way to get to Port Isaac or Padstow.

We also run private charters in the evenings to take you to a secluded cove for a picnic, or to Port Isaac for a drink on the slipway while watching a live performance by the Fisherman’s Friends!

FITNESS

If you fancy a workout on dry land, then our fitness sessions are just the ticket.

Run by my wife, Millie, we provide three beach sessions each morning, starting around 7 am. Choose from a mixture of boot camp, cardio, boxing and general fitness classes - it’s an excellent way to start the day. Millie and her team of instructors also run core crunch classes in the evening, SUP yoga during the day as well as private fitness sessions.

If you’re wondering what to do with the children, you can always put them in our 8am morning surf session while you have a work out. Happy days!

CAFÉ AND SHOPS

We have two cafés; one on the beach at Polzeath and one on the North Quay in Padstow, as well as our original shop in Port Isaac where you can pick up Wavehunters branded clothing. Our cafés double up as booking offices for all our services, as well as meeting hubs for our customers and us. We sell as much local produce as possible and keep it simple for people who have just got out of water, jumped off a boat or simply off for a dog walk; decent Cornish roasted coffee, hot chocolate, local ice cream and hot, filling toasties.

Locations: Padstow (North quay, by the ferry), Rock (on the private pontoon), Polzeath (on the beach) and Port Isaac (on the harbour).

Walk on Water

Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is fast becoming the water sport of choice in North Cornwall. A cross between canoeing and surfing, it uses a surf style board and a long paddle, enabling you to glide along and take in the stunning scenery from a completely new perspective.

Not just for surfing waves, it can also be used on flat water for easy beach paddling and it’s a great core body workout.

Hit the Surf

A jewel in the North Cornwall coast, Polzeath is fantastic for surfers of all ability, with retro style wooden belly boards, boogies, long boards, short boards and stand up paddle boards all in evidence here. If you haven’t packed the hardware, then board and wetsuit hire is available from numerous outlets on and around the beach.

There are surf schools catering for all ages for those keen to learn and lessons can be private or group sessions. For intermediate surfers, they can also organise surf safaris with transport to other nearby surf spots.

Regardless of the state of the tide, surfing in one form or another is usually possible. Full lifeguard cover and a dog ban from Easter to October help to keep the beach safe and clean (Polzeath holds a Blue Flag Beach Award).

Sail Away

The meandering Camel Estuary provides a natural haven for sailors of all abilities. Flanked by Rock and Padstow, the wide curving river offers wonderfully varied sailing, protected as it is from the Atlantic swells by Stepper Point and the Doom Bar sandbank.

Sail upstream at high tide, to explore the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while confident sailors can head downstream and venture right out into Hayle Bay and the open ocean beyond.

Camel Sailing and Powerboat Centre provide lessons and short courses for all abilities and also rent out Wayfarer, Pico and Laser dinghies as well as Catamarans. For those who wish to test their skills, the Rock Sailing and Water-Ski Club arrange regular races, Camel Week in August being the most popular fixture.

Waterski Fun

The Camel Ski School is the largest waterski school in the country and a centre of excellence recognised by British Waterski. The Camel estuary provides fantastic conditions not only for Waterskiing, but also Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing - owner Charlie Toogood’s personal favourite.

More recently Camel Ski have added Kayaking and SUP (both great core workouts) and new for this year, the x2 Mega SUP that is perfect for racing and touring up the Camel River. Drift Away

Cornish Coast Adventures (CCA) is a small, specialist company running guided sit on top sea kayak trips and sheltered kayak sessions from Easter to November each year. Based on the family farm just above Port Quin harbour, (between Port Isaac and Polzeath) CCA is run by Sam Williams. A Fresh Perspective

The spectacular natural harbours at Port Quin, Port Gaverne and Port Isaac conspire to create a unique spot for sea kayaking. Under their expert guidance you’ll explore vast caves and historic mines and discover the hidden beaches and blowholes along this coast along with amazing bird and sea life. St Minver provides a challenge for golfers of all standards, with two golf clubs, both with stunning views across the Camel Estuary.

An excellent third North Cornwall course, Trevose Golf and Country Club is also just 30 minutes away.

The Church Course at St Enodoc Golf Club is a beautifully undulating James Braid links course, with firm greens and some blind shots.

Known for its great year-round condition, no two holes are the same. The Holywell Course is also a real test of skill for golfers of any handicap, young and old.

Soul Yoga

Bro Diplock North Cornwall shaper Bro Diplock has been crafting custom surfboards in North Cornwall for over 25 years. We asked him why surfboards fire people’s imagination so much?

“A magic board is a blend of the right template, the right amount of board for that person and the perfect fin position combined with the perfect edge around the rails – a whole bunch of things and the board has to fit the surfer.

That’s why custom is King. So to make a board I have to work out your ability, know what size you are and where you’re going to surf – the conditions, what the board is for, and what you actually want to get from the surfboard.

With a custom board, there’s a serious amount of passion and creativity that’s goes into building it… The shaper has spent time thinking about it and then literally carving it out of a lump of foam. That’s what I’m here to do - to build boards that get people excited about surfing, to keep the stoke alive.

You have to have an eye for blending certain curves and aesthetics, because if you get a board that looks ugly and it upsets you visually, the board isn’t going to go well, as mentally you just don’t like the board. Surfers are very visual, if they don’t like the look of it, the feel of it, they’re put off before they even get on the board. That’s what happens”, he laughs.

“I get great satisfaction from actually creating surfboards that people get enjoyment out of… It’s satisfying to see them improving their surfing and enjoying themselves in the sea. I know then I’ve done my job”.

ESCAPE TO THE SEA

ill Atlee first started shaping boards back in 1974, when as a surfer, qualified boat-builder and joiner he decided to make boards for himself.

They make boards using lots of construction methods and are dedicated to all the surf sports, shaping all forms of surf craft including; surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing and stand up paddle boarding.

Fast forward to 1982, Bill co-founded ‘Lightwave Sailboards’, which grew to be one of the most successful custom European windsurf board manufacturers. This was followed by a move to Brest, northern France, where he set up specialising in shaping high performance custom short surfboards and long boards.

“We don’t believe that being a good shaper means you only shape one style of board. All surf sports benefit from each other, whether it’s by way of the construction system, or the fin position - we learn loads every time we take to the water”, concludes Bill.

Based in Rock there is a strong possibility you’ll see the Escape team in the line-up.

Bill moved back to Cornwall in 1997 set up Escape Surfboards which started off supplying his French contacts and building up a UK following.

Since then Escape has produced surfboards for several major brands and continued to produce custom boards, “made to measure”, to the highest level. Escape Surfboards is a small team with a heap of experience built on rather a lot of surfing.

What services do you offer your clients?

I am a solicitor, a farmer and a fisherman. I grew up in Port Isaac and started catching lobsters when I was fourteen.

This introduced me to Cornish commerce! A lifelong love of the sea led me to decide at a very early age that I wanted to live and work in beautiful Cornwall. I have raised my family here and am now a proud grandfather.

We are well known for our quality residential conveyancing service and were appointed one of the first members of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme. We also have a significant private client base and practice and are known for this work.

What do you love most about your work?

Where do you live and work?

The best thing about working as I do is achieving that elusive work/life balance. I am able to go surfing and fishing everyday if I choose to!

I purchased my first house in Trewarmett in 1980 and then in 1982 I was lucky enough to be able to acquire and convert one of the medieval barns on Trebiffen Farm, Boscastle, to create my family home. We now have four converted buildings on the farm and run about 100 acres of farmland, raising cattle and sheep and growing potatoes and vegetables. Boscastle is also close to the serious surf breaks at Trebarwith, Bossiney and Millook.

It has a fantastically close and friendly community and the shops and school are thriving. Boscastle is a gem of a place to live.

What would you say your point of difference is?

As a small general practice, we genuinely enjoy the ability to keep in direct contact with our clients. You should never find yourself in a telephone queue or unable to speak to one of our team. Much of our work is repeat business or by referral, reducing the need for marketing spend, ensuring good value for our clients. We believe that this is a reflection of our personal, yet efficient service. Our team is comprised of four experienced solicitors, a legal executive and a small office team. We all have strong local connections and a passion for life in North Cornwall.

Were you affected by the flooding in Boscastle in 2004?

Everybody in Boscastle was affected by the dramatic events of the flood. I remember looking out of the kitchen window down to the harbour and seeing several helicopters stacked in the air above the valley performing rescues. Although I lost my boat that day, I was subsequently introduced to Prince Charles who was really supportive of the village and several of the businesses worst affected.

How has North Cornwall changed over the years?

Links to London have got better and the film industry has had a positive impact by showing the beauty of Cornwall to a huge international audience. The holiday season has just got longer and longer.

You’re the Boscatle harbour master and also chairman of the local Parish Council – can you tell us a bit about that?

Tell us how you came to set up your own solicitors practice?

I was educated at Port Isaac County Primary and Camelford Comprehensive. I went on to Manchester University, which had a very good law school at the time.

I was tutored by academics there who are now recognised as national leaders in their field. It was a brilliant and practical grounding which taught me to always look for pragmatic solutions for clients in my subsequent practice.

After working in Bodmin for 20 years, in 1998 I established my own niche practice, Christopher Key Solicitors and converted one of the barns on my property into an office space.

I have always been interested in the running of the harbour and in the early days, I was appointed secretary so that I could deal with day to day administration. I became the Harbour Master about ten years ago. I write a little article for the Parish magazine each quarter with the harbour comings and goings, from the gig racing to visits by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and even the Border Agency! I have taken an interest in my Parish for decades and have been the chairman of the Parish Council for the last twenty years.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Have you always worked as a solicitor?

In the summer months, fishing from my twenty foot fishing boat Rene is a passion. I keep between twenty and thirty lobster pots and I’m always pleased to see a bass in one of the pots. Once I even caught an octopus! One of my sons is a chef and the whole family takes a great interest in the thriving food scene in North Cornwall. On the surfing front, I still have the odd old Light Wave surfboard, but now mainly concentrate on boogie boarding which is more in keeping with growing older gracefully.

When I was at university, I worked in the summer holidays as a lifeguard on Polzeath beach, Constantine and Boobys Bay. In many ways this was a better way of meeting people than anything else. Many of the people from those days have remained my close friends and valued clients of the firm. My early professional career was as a litigator, but we now specialise in residential and commercial conveyancing, agricultural property law, as well as general private client services, wills and probate and general commercial work. My litigation background continues to be useful in property related disputes.-

Come Walk With Me Growing up on the North coast of Cornwall has completely shaped who I am as a person and what I do for a living. I’m a landscape artist and have owned and run the Cliffside Gallery on the cliffs in Port Isaac for the last 21 years. Facing out to sea, the Gallery doubles as my studio and allows me to work in there and to remain open all year round.

Essentially I am a painter of the land and of the sea, so walking plays a huge part in my life. I walk with my partner Simon, (we run the Gallery together) with him doing all the framing among other things. We have two busy border collies, so at first light everyday, no matter what the weather, we are up, out and on the cliffpath within a few miles of home. The light at this time of day is magical, a bonus time when you feel as though you have it all to yourself before the day’s schedule begins.

Surrounded by beautiful coastline, inspiration is never hard to find and I am constantly taking in the everchanging, light, tones and seasons,

so there is always something new hanging on the gallery wall.

I prefer to paint en plein air, so these morning walks are as much a reccy as anything. I’ll often return to a place over and over again to paint when I know the spring colour will be at it’s best, or when the tide will be just right.

One of my favourite walks has got to be out round Pentire Head and The Rumps. We park at the farm and walk down the path to Stinky Bay, then head out to the headland where the view is breath-taking - you can see round to Trevose, Polzeath, down the estuary and inland to the moors and Rough Tor. I paint here a lot, but walking here in the early morning, you can catch not only an incredible sunrise coming up over North Cornwall, but the tiny changes in light, birdsong and the sea are really the main event.

Onwards then towards The Rumps, and the view of Port Isaac Bay opens up, right up the coast to Hartland, with Lundy Island visible on a clear day.

I wear a pair of walking boots and take my camera everywhere I go – my instant sketchbook. I also pack a stick for the dog - he carries at least

one everywhere he goes and like a womble, collects rubbish all along the way and we inevitably go home with pockets full of other peoples rubbish. I would say this walk is fair to moderate. There is a long slow climb up to Pentire head and parts of coast path are close to the edge so beware if you take your dogs. Ours have grown up running on these cliffs, so have a lot of common sense and thankfully are not keen on chasing rabbits. Cattle also grazes there, so it’s advisable to keep to the path and be aware when they have young. It’s a good three miles, which takes us just under an hour, but there are many places to stop for a picnic, or to sit and watch birds or dolphins if you’re lucky.

A blast round the cliffs a couple of times a day, followed by a swim is great for all our minds, bodies and souls.

Born and raised in Cornwall, 39-year-old artist Jethro Jackson is best known for his evocative seascape oil paintings, revealing a real affinity and empathy with the North Cornish coastline and landscape.

Young Jethro grew up surrounded by art and artists (his father Paul Jackson is a successful potter). After completing an Art Foundation course at Falmouth College of Art and a BA in illustration at Manchester, there followed a short-lived stint in the city, before Jethro returned home to his beloved Cornwall.

paintings on the go at any one time, preferring to move between them - giving time and space to stand back and think about the next layer.

Primarily using oil paints, Jethro paints directly on to prepared boards and incorporates a range of other materials to create texture, including sand, pencil and charcoal. His preferred medium is Old Holland, a classic brand, famed for its rich colours and excellent quality pigments. It produces a particular richness that is essential since his impressionistic and modernist work uses a limited palette of soft pastel shades with sudden moments of colour.

The creative urge meant that he too started painting and making ceramics after university – a passion that was financed by a small gardening business. After each days work Jethro would often work into the evening at his Dad’s studio, much to his dismay! In 2005 he sold the gardening business to concentrate on his art full-time.

“That was a big decision and not best timed with the recession that soon followed”, muses Jethro. “But I never had any doubt that it would work”. In 2009 when wife Kristie became pregnant with first daughter Isobel, the spare bedroom was needed, so Jethro started to look for a studio to work from. When his father heard that The Salty Dog was thinking of leaving Porthilly, Jethro was quick to snap up the opportunity. Porthilly Gallery opened in April 2010 and daughter Isobel was born in March, so that first year ‘remains a bit of a blur’, but the couple have never looked back and the gallery feels like home.

Jethro works quickly and intuitively, adding paint in rapid layers without too much consideration to the forms - it’s very instinctive. He will then typically spend time adding more refined marks and references to human activity, to anchor the image and make it more representational.

“My art is not intended to be a perfect depiction,” explains Jethro, “it’s my interpretation - I want the viewer to get a sense of place and I hope the images are familiar and evoke memories”.

Over the years Jethro’s style has become a little more abstract, largely due to a growing confidence in how he paints. It also has a lot to do with the encouragement and support he gets from his friends, family and clients, who are his best critics.

Jethro is often to be found exploring the coastline but he also draws inspiration from a back-catalogue of memories, which filter into his paintings. Whilst he does have a few special spots that he returns to in his paintings, he is always attracted by new places. Inspiration comes from watching the colours and light change in the landscape, so a lot of time is spent just watching. On the Camel Estuary the weather and light can change within minutes.

When he’s not painting Jethro loves fishing and spending time on the water. Fishing helps him relax, to enjoy nature and to look at the landscape with a sense of invigorating freedom; which can be stifled when stuck behind a sketchbook! Such is the wont of an artist though, that even during fishing trips he will invariably return home to paint what he’s seen.

Working from his small, tranquil studio at the back of Porthilly Gallery, Jethro sketches from memory, although he sometimes refers to photographs when working out perspectives. Painting in the open air would be too difficult since he works with such large quantities of paint.

The studio also forces him to focus on his memories, remembering how he felt at that moment on the day and transferring that impression into his art.

“I love living and working in North Cornwall and I wouldn’t change it for anything. I grew up here so all my family and friends are nearby. We have some of the most beautiful walks and beaches anywhere in the world and there is a world-class selection of pubs and restaurants serving the freshest, most incredible food and produce right on my doorstep. It’s heaven (especially when the sun comes out).”

Large skylights in the studio flood the space with natural light, which is essential for painting. When Jethro’s in painting mode, there is always loud music playing and paint gets everywhere. He often has a few different

For daytime dining the relaxed Sea Side restaurant with its chilled beach chic style and menu is a great hangout for a long lunch or afternoon cocktail. In Cornwall, we’re fortunate enough to get hold of some of the best seafood in the country, and our lobsters are second to none. Perfectly cooked and simply served with a good dressing or mayonnaise is all you need to impress.

Don’t forget, you want the lobster to sing! For best results, serve the lobsters once they have cooled to room temperature. If you do want to refrigerate the lobsters after cooking to serve the following day, just remember to remove them from the fridge half an hour or so before serving, to take the chill off. We’ll be featuring this dish on the specials board this summer at The Mariners, Rock.

Poached Lobster and herb dressing Ingredients Serves Two as a Light Lunch

Method

2 live lobsters, up to 750g each

Put the lobsters in the freezer for an hour before cooking to sedate them.

2 shallots, peeled and sliced 1 bulb of garlic cut in half 2 onion, peeled and sliced

1 fennel, chopped 2 sticks of celery, chopped 2 bay leaves 1 star anise 1 tsp. coriander seeds 10 peppercorns, Salt 200 ml white wine

For the herb dressing: 40 ml Agridulce style white wine vinegar or a good quality sherry 100 ml Good quality light extra virgin olive oil Cornish sea salt 1 tbsp. chopped chervil 1 tbsp. chopped chives 1 tbsp. chopped dill 1 tbsp. chopped tarragon

Before poaching the lobsters, take them out of the freezer and firmly insert the tip of a strong cook’s knife into the cross on the head to kill each one instantly.

Add the lobsters to the simmering bouillon and cook for 6 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat, and leave the lobsters to finish cooking in the bouillon for a further 4 minutes. Place the lobsters on a tray and leave to cool completely. Strain the bouillon and let it cool for later.

When the lobsters are cold, carefully cut them in half lengthways, from head to tail. Remove the stomach sac and the dark intestinal thread that runs along the length of the tail. Remove the claw meat by gently, but firmly cracking the shell with the back of a knife, snap off the smaller of the pincers and then use the handle of a spoon or a skewer to poke the meat out of the shell. Remove the cartilage running through the centre of the claw meat, and then cut the meat into small pieces. Lay the pieces of claw meat into the head space of the lobster shell.

When ready to serve, make the herb dressing. Take the agridulce vinegar, olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a couple of tablespoons of the bouillon and whisk together in a bowl to combine. Add the chopped herbs and mix one last time, before generously drizzling the dressing over the lobster. Serve immediately, along with a simple, fresh salad.

Agridulce means “bittersweet� in Spanish. It is made from wine vinegar, which has been sweetened with grape must, before being aged in oak barrels for one year.

To poach the lobsters, first make a bouillon. Put the vegetables, garlic, herbs, wine, peppercorns and spices into a large pan (big enough to hold the lobsters).

Pour in enough water to cover the lobsters and add plenty of salt (you want it to be almost as salty as the sea). Bring to the boil over a high heat, then lower and let simmer for 5 minutes.

It’s a spot you’ll want to savour.

If you can bear to tear yourself away from the Hotel facilities, then Rock Beach is a long stretch of golden sand that hugs the estuary towards the coast. Backed by sand dunes, there is plenty of room to stretch your legs and you will be able to find a secluded spot even in the height of summer.

Understated and familiar, the interior includes weathered Delabole slate floors, zingy fabrics and a collection of carefully curated twentieth century Cornish paintings, resulting in a calm and relaxing space. The bedrooms continue the fresh seaside style and are kept to the highest standards by an excellent housekeeping team. There are sixteen double rooms and four suites. Many have water views and are designed to be comfortable and practical, with well-designed bathrooms including body products from the local St Kitts Herbery.

Just five minutes from the Hotel and not to be missed, the Padstow foot ferry leaves from Rock Beach. All ages will love pottering around this historic Cornish harbour and the journey is half the fun! In the summer, the estuary waters play host to numerous water sports and sailing regattas, so even if getting out on the water isn’t your thing, find the time to sit awhile and take in the view. It’s worth it!

Kiln.

Owned by artist Sue Pullin, this tiny but perfectly formed design-led studio and shop in the heart of Port Isaac is a must-see. Located in Middle Street in an historic building, Kiln can be found just behind Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen and before the lifeboat station by the harbour.

Sue hand paints fine china in a wide range of contemporary designs, and the china is then fired in her on site kilns – hence the name.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY We speak to local builder Ben Harbour about living and working in North Cornwall’s close-knit community. As a youngster, Ben grew up surfing and windsurfing the local beaches and walking out to the Rumps near Polzeath. Now at 51, with his own family, he is fortunate to be able to work so close to home and give his four children the same upbringing he enjoyed in this incredible North Cornwall environment.

n engineer by trade, Ben gained his degree at Durham University and went on to work for a multinational. A change of direction then saw him taking a year out, journeying the length of Africa by motorbike and ending up in Cape Town. He worked in South Africa for a few years helping to set up a fundraising office for Save the Rhino International and also started to work as a carpenter to make a little money.

Solving structural challenges and getting teams to work towards a common goal is crucial to building in our coastal and maritime surroundings. Craft, quality and attention to detail are now minimum requirements for all good builders in the North Cornwall area, but Harbour Construction also brings a healthy respect for the community. Communications and maintaining good relationships with neighbours is an integral part of ensuring a successful project.

On returning home, he qualified as a carpenter and started doing small renovation projects in the Rock area, which lead to larger construction projects using his engineering background.

When he’s not working, Ben enjoys sea swimming, windsurfing on the Doom Bar and coaching youngsters at the Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club. After attending the club for many years with his own children, he succeeded in qualifying as a lifeguard in his forties and is the current Chairman of the club.

Now in its 21st year, Harbour Construction is the logical end to the journey that Ben started all that time ago and his ‘personal touch’ is still very much in evidence.

One of the area’s most sought after construction firms, employing 25 skilled craftsmen and apprentices and numerous sub-contractors, the company prides itself on its quality builds, delivering to client and architect expectations time and again.

Ben explains, “The club is a fantastic community asset and if we can help to improve the safety and awareness of all ocean users, then we are more than fulfilling our role.” Many of the RNLI lifeguards patrolling the beach in the summer months have gone through the club starting as nippers aged 7, and its members now help to provide safety cover for events around Cornwall such as The Big Swim in Port Isaac.

With over 50 renovations and 15 new builds under its belt, there have been many memorable projects from small, beautifully crafted shepherd’s huts to some of the largest, highest specification houses in Cornwall. “ The one that will live longest in the memory is on the cliff overlooking Polzeath where we overcame the most considerable access and engineering challenges in the stormy winter of 2015”, recalls Ben. “None of us will ever forget it and the quality and detailing on the building is a great legacy for the skills of our team”.

Serendipity and following one’s heart with respect to the locality means that Harbour Construction is now firmly rooted in the community and the company remains committed to doing things right and producing beautiful buildings in the process.

A TONIC FOR THE SOUL

TREBARWITH STRAND

We meet the Scott’s, an inspiring family who have accomplished the north coast dream with their stunning restoration of Fentafriddle in Trebarwith, into a successful luxury holiday letting business.

any of us dream of upping sticks, escaping the clutches of the city and eloping to the coast, where the fresh sea air gently invigorates the soul.

But for many, it sadly remains just that – a dream. Not so for the Scott’s, originally from Surrey, who ultimately took the plunge, trading in London for the slower pace of North Cornwall. “When I worked in the city,” recalls James Scott, “I would drive into London every day, and find myself stuck in traffic on Putney Bridge at quarter to seven. Now I can be out walking on the coast paths with my dogs at this time instead, and wouldn’t swap it for the world! That said, life is just as busy, but a different kind of busy!”

James was in theatre management, while Lucy was in the wardrobe department. They fell for each other, and together soon fell for the charms of Cornwall. They have been returning year on year with their four children Harriet, Emily, Daniel and Frederick.

Creative flair and an artistic nature seem to be a recurring theme in the family. Daughter Emily Scott is the awardwinning head chef at the celebrated St Tudy Inn, Nicole (Daniel’s wife) is a successful graphic artist, while their son, Daniel, is a sculptor and photographer, whose impressive list of clients has included Madame Tussauds, Warner Bros and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Harriet is a leading garden designer and Frederick a film director.

James and his wife, Lucy, welcome us into their idyllic north coast farmstead, Fentafriddle, to share their inspiring story of how they realised the Cornish dream. Lucy and James Scott first met in the Royal Court Theatre in London.

a house in Rock, and developed a number of houses in Port Isaac. “I love the fact that the Cornish landscape hasn’t really changed much at all,” says James. “We have an 18th Century painting of Trebarwith on the wall at home and the island looks exactly the same as it does today. Cornwall offers something new for each successive generation and the influx of talented chefs and fine restaurants, watersports and stunning coastline will ensure it has enduring appeal.”

high standards. They offer a very high standard product: “Do it to the standard you would want for yourself and you can’t go wrong,” says James.

While built with traditional materials, sustainability is at the forefront of the ethos at Fentafriddle. The properties generate 90% of their own energy; there is a wind turbine and they have their own water supply from clear pure springs on the land that are tested each year for purity.

When they discovered Fentafriddle at the beginning of 2004, they instantly fell in love. At this point, the once working farm was now just a tumbledown wreck, yet being set in glorious Cornish countryside while overlooking the ocean, they immediately saw its potential. “Our friends thought we were mad!” says Lucy, “But it really did tick all the boxes for us.”

The Scotts have been letting the luxury properties for the last ten years and they have let exceptionally well, turning over in excess of £200,000 per annum. The Milling Barn is also a filmstar, having been used as a location in the film adaptation of Rosamund Pilcher’s Shellseekers.

A couple who holidayed at Fentafriddle later contacted the Scotts to ask if they could get married there, so James and Lucy applied for a wedding license and have held several romantic intimate weddings since. It’s also the perfect venue for hosting special family occasions like 60th birthdays and anniversaries. The three properties mean that extended families and friends can get together to celebrate.

Lucy and James were struck by its peaceful location, but also the fact that it was not isolated; they could see the world passing by, but not hear it. Fentafriddle boasts jaw-dropping 180° coastal views, with Trevone and Lundy in the distance, set in 50 acres and surrounded by stunning scenery. Another great draw for the Scotts is it’s so close to Trebarwith Strand, “one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets,” adds James.

James and Lucy believe the secret to their success is their attention to detail in offering a holiday home that feels like a home-from-home with everything you need, including Wi-Fi, Sonos audio, Netflix, Sky Sports – everything their guests are likely to have at their own home. Every contemporary comfort is considered; toiletries, dressing gowns, novels and games and Nespresso machines.

“The properties are comfortable and relaxing,” says Lucy, “and we’ve added all the little touches you have at home – artwork, books, rugs and soft furnishings, so that you can arrive on Friday evening and simply walk in and feel instantly at ease.”

Obtaining full planning permission on the three barns at Fentafriddle in 2005, they embarked on an epic restoration project, converting each barn one-by-one in several stages.

They tackled the main barn, The Milling Barn, first. “It just had a roof on it and the round house was literally a pile of rocks,” says James. Stone by stone, they converted the ruin into a stunning four-bed, four-bath holiday house. James remembers insisting that each bedroom had its own ensuite bathroom. The architect was so outraged by the idea he walked out on the job, saying he couldn’t work with him!

James, however, showed great foresight, as now an en-suite bathroom is considered a must for successful luxury letting.

They offer a very personal service and meet all their guests.

Everyone receives a lovely welcome hamper full of delicious local products and all guests get a bottle of Champagne on arrival (which has saved the lives of many husbands and boyfriends who have forgotten anniversaries or birthdays!).

Little Fentafriddle was converted about ten years ago.

When they first took it on, however, it only had three walls and half a roof! As with the other buildings, the transformation is truly phenomenal – it is now a five-star gold luxury holiday cottage; cosy and intimate, yet at the same time, surprisingly bright and spacious. Tremanon followed shortly after, in 2008. Indeed, stepping inside now, it’s hard to believe that not all that long ago, this barn was entirely buried under rubble, with only the front wall exposed to reveal the potential hidden within. Just like its neighbours, Tremanon is an absolute delight.

Perhaps the Scotts’ story has inspired you to create your own luxury Cornish retreat from the big city? It’s amazing what a lot of hard work and vision can achieve. But wouldn’t it be wonderful to own a little slice of this north coast paradise? Well, the good news is that you can! The Milling Barn and Tremanon are currently for sale with John Bray & Partners.

The luxurious and understated interiors are light and welcoming with a country charm. They have been created entirely by the couple, but are largely down to Lucy, while James tends to deal with the construction and lighting side.

The properties are actually very like the couple’s own home – “neutral Farrow & Ball tones that suit all tastes and offend no one,” says Lucy. “It’s also easy to repaint throughout each year,” she adds. They purposely aimed for the top end of the market and have been fastidious in redecorating every year and replacing carpets every three years to maintain their
