Foreword By Lorraine Candy

As a child all my summer holidays were spent in a white VW Kombi van on the campsite overlooking Polzeath (Hayle Bay), where we enjoyed magical days in the sea or wandering barefoot to and from the small beach front village.

Personally I am delighted that ever more visitors are discovering the joy of this part of the country, I welcome their financial and emotional investment. And I have watched with happiness as the local community has modernised and become more welcoming, adapting to the ebb and flow of tourism and offering an endless supply of new activities and culinary delights.

We often climbed Brea Hill at Daymer Bay, stopping at the top to gaze at St Enodoc Church and across the estuary to the then, quiet harbour of Padstow. Twenty one years ago I got married at St Enodoc and nowadays my four children aged 10 to 18, wander barefoot to the beach from our house, which overlooks the Tristram Cliff campsite where I spent my childhood breaks.

I also enjoy the new emerging camaraderie of helping local groups and businesses keep our beaches clean and environmentally protected. It feels like those who live here and those who visit are finally all pulling together.

My heart belongs in Cornwall, mostly North Cornwall but I save a bit for South East Cornwall because I grew up in Liskeard where my family live. This is my home county and despite leaving it at 16 to start my magazine and newspaper career in London it always pulls me back. We rarely go abroad on holiday and have introduced our little part of Cornwall to many friends and colleagues all of whom care for it in the addictive way we do.

In the past year Covid has kept us away from our beloved home from home, but it’s made us think about the future with clarity and I suspect our future lies here. As a journalist I’ve been lucky enough to travel to every continent in the world but nothing beats Cornwall for me. I am looking forward to holding my grandchildren’s hands as they too wander barefoot along the same paths I did as a child.

Cornwall has so much more to offer now: be it walking the well kept coastal paths, discovering secret coves or simply sitting on miles of unspoilt beach. I am a keen open water swimmer and spend much time in the sea with my local friends.

A GOLDEN ERA John Bray & Partners celebrates 50 years of North Coast property sales

50 years

ou’ll need to turn the clock back five decades for the beginning of this story. As local postmaster and postman, John Bray was a trusted keyholder for a number of local properties. A familiar face around Rock, John subsequently set up a holiday letting business that expanded into an estate agency and the rest, as they say, is history. The excellent customer service that was the cornerstone of its inception in 1971, remains at the heart of the business today. The original holiday letting arm has recently separated from the estate agency; in an ever-changing market, it was time to pass this on to the next custodian. Now under the wider Sykes umbrella, John Bray Cornish Holidays is benefitting from a powerful, national booking platform while maintaining the same service, faces and local expertise at its offices in Rock and Port Isaac.

As of 2019, John Bray and Partners Estate Agents LLP is now owned by Josephine Ashby and Alex Roads, with Alex heading up the formal RICS valuations for the company. Jo, as Managing Partner, runs the agency day-to-day and explains that their core market is: “Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac. However, as a client and marketled agency, we are moving further afield. This last year has seen us complete on properties on the South Coast, in Seaton and Fowey, as well as stretching along the North Coast to Boscastle, Trebarwith, Perranporth and Pentire Head. With huge demand for the wonderful beaches in North Cornwall we find ourselves being drawn further afield. The Seven Bays are in high demand with their abundance of coastal properties with beach access, all within easy reach of Newquay airport – and because of this we find ourselves growing organically into these other areas.” North Cornwall is a vast natural playground. With its combination of stunning beaches, scenic coastal paths and superior golf courses, the team at John Bray are in no doubt that they are very lucky to be at the heart of this. Jo continues: “It’s because we live here ourselves that we understand why people really want to come here; we are finding that many more owners are looking to relocate. Particularly now with the pandemic, people are spending more time, if not full time, here in Cornwall.” Despite being a holiday destination, the area maintains a vibrant community, particularly noticeable during the recent lockdowns, with everybody pulling together. Community volunteer groups were quickly set up to help elderly residents or those who were shielding, contacting everyone in the two parishes, and really proving that North Cornwall is a very nurturing place to live. Being a part of this for so many decades, it’s always been important for John Bray and Partners to play an active part in its community whether that be through charity donations or working closely with other local businesses. Celebrating 50 years of success in a year when the world has been turned on its head has had its challenges but also many rewards. Marketing & Operations Manager, Shireen Cunliffe comments: “During the first lockdown when it first went quiet, there was an eerie silence, with

Right: A very enthusiastic and energetic team, knows first-hand what the area has to offer and after an intense year in the property market, enjoys letting off steam and making the most of their beloved North Cornwall. From top: Alex, James, Josephine, Mark, Charlie, Mary, Shireen, Phoebe

no-one knowing what was about to happen. In fact, it became an incredible opportunity for us to showcase the North Coast to the rest of the UK. By adopting video viewings, we found we could show properties when nothing else was moving and our area began to grow shoots of life again. Once restrictions were lifted, it was just like lighting a touch paper, and it has just gone and gone… it’s been exhilarating!”

Pandemic-times have meant that John Bray and Partners has had to be adaptable and agile in order to prepare the ground for the next 50 years. Technology has been so important to the team, particularly when it comes to communication as buyers are messaging via multiple channels, whether that be email, text, WhatsApp, Instagram, Zoom and virtual viewings / video tours are here to stay. “As a company we were particularly strict about adhering to lockdown rules, using all the tools available to us to keep both buyers and our community safe,” affirms Shireen.

“There is no doubt that the focus for buyers wanting to secure their piece of North Cornwall is phenomenal. Despite media statements that there is a shortage of properties, we are getting a steady flow of new instructions, stock is coming, do not despair! But our message to buyers is very clear; be swift, be focused, be prepared… and of course be ready to compromise. When properties in an area are so sought after, there always has to be some flexibility in expectations.”

50drink years

“As a result,” explains Jo, “pre-qualification has never been better. You now know who your buyer is, whether they’ve got the funds, what the timings are, and all of this is done in advance – and it’s acceptable to do that now. Previously, it would have felt massively intrusive to ask what we ask now in advance. Covid has reshaped the format of how estate agencies work, and this will never change.”

10

jo hnbraysale s.co.uk

Looking to the future for John Bray and Partners, the message is one of nimble efficiency. 2020 was an exciting year despite everything and for 2021 and beyond, marketled, organic growth will be the agency’s direction: “Our buyer base has really grown. We now have even more people actively looking, with a significant volume of our instructions selling off-market, demonstrating the seriousness of the active buyer database we hold. That’s a sign of a strong market, when you’re able to pair your buyers with sellers. The pandemic has generated a lot of new interest, especially for those that have always loved North Cornwall, but haven’t necessarily thought so seriously about relocating. Remote working as a norm has made this much more achievable, and when you can’t travel anywhere else, Cornwall feels like it has become the hub of the universe.”

“WE LOVE THIS PART OF CORNWALL, AND WE UNDERSTAND WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO ACHIEVE HERE BECAUSE WE WANT THAT TOO!”

This is borne out by the arrival of the G7 summit to Carbis Bay as well as numerous television documentaries, selling

50 years

the Cornish dream. While there is a premium being paid and prices have seen an uplift, Jo says that this shouldn’t perturb buyers. “Yes, it’s pretty buoyant at the moment, but that is also encouraging people who are considering selling, to sell. So, there is movement to the market, there are houses coming on. I believe the market is certainly going to settle; as Europe opens up, it will naturally do so. The market tends to move in steps, so we need to keep our feet on the ground.

“It is time spent talking to people so that everyone understands what’s happening. It’s not about us, it’s about investing time for the benefit of our clients. The last 50 years has given us the experience, we know we’re just a part of the process. We just love this part of Cornwall, and we understand what people want to achieve here because we want that too,” finishes Jo. For this niche estate agency, relationships and relationship building remains at the very core of what it offers. In a competitive location, the team at John Bray knows that it cannot rest on its laurels and must continue to adapt in a rapidly changing landscape, meeting the demands of both the pandemic and the developing nature of the market, while delivering the best service possible for every single client.

“John Bray and Partners may have a half-century legacy, with experience to match, but as a company we see ourselves as 50 years young. The business is very much centred around people; whether that be buyers or sellers, and the John Bray ethos is about treating clients with respect and grace and retaining the relationship. This ethos overarches everything we do and is based on a platform of trust,” explains Jo.

SONGS

OF THE SEA After a fallow year, the Port Isaac Shanty Festival is set to return for a splendid weekend of music and merriment

T

he inaugural Port Isaac Shanty Festival took place in 2019, blessed with a weekend of perfect weather. What began as the small seed of an idea for a fundraising event in aid of Port Isaac Village Hall, evolved into a full weekend of music and shanties. Fundraiser and organiser, Dee Littlechild explains what’s in store for this year’s festival and how the funds are being spent. “As a committee, we had talked about building an extension to our village hall for years, and in 2019 we decided it was going to be our big fundraising year. We did lots of fundraising, culminating in the charity festival and successfully raised over £70k. The village hall is a very important community hub for Port Isaac, as it’s the only public space we have in the village, and we are delighted that we were able to have our extension built during lockdown.”

Voices will ring and out and songs will be sung at the opening event on the evening of September 17th and then from 11am-11pm from 18th-19th September. Entry is free but everyone is encouraged to donate to one of the collection buckets to show their appreciation or can take home a memento of the festival in the form of some festival merchandise. All the money raised this year will go towards a new roof for the village hall.

Sadly, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the event was cancelled in 2020 and Dee and the committee were concerned about how they could enable an event for 2021. Port Isaac’s narrow streets and small cafés are not ideal for social distancing measures and so they had to think outside the box. “We were unsure of what to,” says Dee. ‘We had the idea of liaising with the carnival, who always holds its event on the playing field. We were delighted when they agreed to have the carnival the weekend before our Shanty Festival so that we could make use of their large marquee for our event.”

This year’s show sponsors include John Bray Estate Agents, Nathan Outlaw, Sproulls Solicitors and Mighty Village. www.portisaacshantyfestival.co.uk

The weekend promises to be one full of music and singing, with local businesses invited to have street food stalls around the field to ensure everyone is well fuelled. Over 30 acts will be performing on the main stage, including the world-renowned Fisherman’s Friends. There will be an intimate acoustic stage in the marquee, as well as the everpopular village hall bar. 13

An incredible watersports playground for all to enjoy on the Camel Estuary

rom high octane water sports for the selfconfessed adrenalin junkie to something a little more gentle for those who enjoy being on the water at a more leisurely pace, Camel Ski School has something for everyone. Established back in the 1970s, and run by Charlie Toogood since 2001, this watersports Mecca is a leader in its field and boasts the largest waterski centre of its kind in the UK. Combine this with Charlie’s 18 years of experience, and the fact that he hand-picks and trains all of his professional instructors, and you couldn’t be in safer hands whichever sport you choose. The school is proudly accredited by the British Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation and is committed to following its coaching guidelines.

Camel Ski_DPS.indd 2

There’s a vast range of activities to enjoy for beginners and pros alike, from waterskiing, wakeboarding or wake surfing to paddle boarding, kayaking and inflatable rides. Each takes place on the stunning Camel Estuary – one of the most beautiful places to be out on the water. Calm waters and sheltered bays make for perfect learning conditions or a great place to carve up the water for the more proficient. This fun and safe estuary playground caters for all the family, with lessons available from five years and up. All equipment, including wetsuits and buoyancy aids, are provided, so you get to use the latest technology and kit. The coaching team uses a number of different methods to get you up and riding in no time. “We’ve got our own coaching system, that we’ve developed over the years, as a fast track to success,” explains Charlie. For waterski beginners, a bar on the side of the boat aids instructorskier communications and reduces the wake for a smoother ride and faster progression. If wakeboarding appeals, then Camel Ski School has a range of boards and bindings to suit all ages and skill levels and can coach absolute beginners who are interested in trying it out for the first time, to advance boarders who are keen to perfect their technique. The emerging sport of wake surfing is the latest to be added to the scene at

either a Brigg or the impressive Axis T22, and every charter includes the driver, insurance, all equipment and fuel. No day on the water would be complete without some well-deserved refreshment. You’ll find the Camel Ski Café positioned right on the water’s edge where you can enjoy drinks, homemade cakes and light snacks. The enjoyment doesn’t stop there; one of the best-kept secrets in North Cornwall, Camel Ski’s Island, is a floating ‘pop-up’ in the middle of the Camel Estuary. It is hoped (Covid guidelines permitting) that the Island will again be bookable for private family celebrations, special events, or a romantic meal from high-summer 2021 – watch this space!

More gentle pastimes include the now incredibly popular paddle boarding and the more traditional kayaking. Both offer a serene way to travel over the calm estuary waters and with two-hour safari sessions available, you can paddle a longer route and explore the true beauty of the estuary. Always with safety in mind, both paddle boarding and kayaking sessions are accompanied by one of the school’s safety boats. For the ultimate in on-water experience, there is also the opportunity to charter one of the school’s boats,

eing in or on the water are what North Cornwall holidays are all about. With bases at Polzeath, Padstow, Port Isaac and Rock, the Wavehunters range of immersive adventures will help you realise your surf and marine dreams. New for this year is the launch of an innovative, hire delivery service. Wetsuits, boards and SUPs are all available to pre-book for delivery, direct to your holiday accommodation in one of the team’s two new vans. If you prefer, you can just have your wetsuit delivered and then your kit kept at whichever beachside location is most convenient. This means you can get suitedup from the comfort of home and be safe in the knowledge that your equipment is ready and waiting for you to explore and enjoy North Cornwall’s ocean playground. Also new for 2021, is the addition of a third RIB to the Wavehunters’ fleet of marine transport. This is available specifically for private charters and boat trips running from Port Isaac. Joining a group trip or chartering a boat with a skipper is the ultimate way to explore the beauty and wonder of the Atlantic Ocean. The diversity of marine life and plethora of hidden coves

on this stunning North Cornwall stretch of coastline will literally take your breath away. There is no better way to experience it than on the water, and during a two-hour trip you can expect to see seals bobbing, dolphins jumping and perhaps even the elusive puffin or sunfish. Boat trips are available from Port Isaac, Rock and Padstow and travel as far as up the coast as Tintagel and Boscastle. Group trips last for up to 90 minutes (family friendly), while private charters can be 2-3 hours, or full days and are perfect for celebrations and special occasions. North Cornwall boasts some of the UK’s best surf spots with Polzeath high up the list. Taking advantage of the slow-breaking, consistent waves. Wavehunters’ experienced surf coaches are able to accommodate private or group lessons for both the young and the young at heart. Surfing is a very individual sport, something which the coaches embrace, so you can be confident that you’ll be up and riding in no time. Surfing is a truly accessible sport for all ages; you just need a wetsuit, a board and a taste for adventure. And for the more progressive rider, there is now the opportunity to hire from Wavehunters’ set of all-new high-end boards, relieving you of the worry of having to transport your own.

POLZEATH TOGETHER

P

olzeath Together is a community campaign with the aim of promoting the respectful enjoyment of Polzeath Beach, maintaining a safe and enjoyable place for all to enjoy. For those that know and love Polzeath and its beautiful beach, or if you are visiting for the first time, the campaign suggests adopting a code of practice that will protect the beach and its precious natural environment. First on the agenda is to leave nothing but your footprints, taking home your litter or disposing in nearby bins. Secondly, is to respect both the natural and built environment surrounding the beach, treating it as if it were your own. Thirdly, and important not only for safety and the habitat of the indigenous wildlife, is to BBQ safely in a contained

way and to avoid beach fires which can get out of control. And finally…after you have watched the sunset, return home to only the noise of the ocean so all can get a good night’s sleep. If you love Polzeath, respect it and it will love you back! Follow Polzeath Together on social @pztogether on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. www.pztogether.co.uk

INTO THE BLUE

With the rise in popularity of wild swimming, a new book on the subject will ensure you get your dose of vitamin-sea

F

riends Bethany Allen, Max Campbell and Lydia Paleschi have a common bond. All have experienced the mental health benefits of cold water swimming and how it has brought them closer to nature. After launching a website in 2020 in order to share their adventures and advocate these well-being benefits, the trio also wanted to share the best and safest places for stepping into the blue. They have spent the last year researching, photographing and writing a new book on the subject, A Guide to Wild Swimming in Cornwall, that covers over 50 locations across the Duchy.

Main photo by Max Campbell, Inset photo by Josh Tarr; from Left Lydia Paleschi, Max Campbell and Bethany Allen

Each location in the book has been carefully selected and includes hidden coves, rocky harbours and tranquil tidal pools, alongside spring-fed quarries and woodland rivers. Every page is accompanied by stunning imagery, showcasing nature at its best. There is also a very useful introductory section that covers tips and safety knowledge for wild swimmers of all experience levels; whether local or having travelled from further afield. It also provides insight into the aforementioned health benefits of wild swimming and the science currently being conducted into cold water immersion.

Many wild swimming communities have been formed across Cornwall over recent years and north Cornwall offers some incredible expanses of blue water to explore, from sea to estuary. For safety reasons, the most experienced of wild swimmers say you should never swim alone, so joining a group or booking a guided session is advisable. The Cornwall Open Water Leisure Swimmers, or OWLS as they are affectionately known, swim at locations across North Cornwall and welcome new, like-minded people via their Facebook community to join them for regular swims and walks. For a more structured offering, especially if you are new to open water, Cornish Rock Tors based in Port Isaac offers guided group or private one-to-one swims, plus access to open training sessions, covering all levels of ability. Swimming alongside experienced instructors, these sessions let you explore the beauty of the Cornish coastline from the water in safety, whilst improving your open water technique.

BAY DREAMS

Discovering The Point at Polzeath’s journey to becoming one of North Cornwall’s most stylish coastal resorts

P stay

olzeath, and its surrounding stretch of coastline is one of Cornwall’s most desirable locations. As renowned for its Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury homes, as it is for its endless golden sands and renowned surf spots, this heady combination has made this area of north Cornwall the destination of choice for the discerning traveller. For those looking to live and breathe the Cornish lifestyle, from the peace and tranquility of their own self catering accommodation, The Point at Polzeath is possibly the perfect place. However, The Point has not always been the coveted coastal escape it is today. Rising from the ashes of the remnants of Roserrow Golf and Country Club, it is the true labour of love of Jeremy and Eva Davies that has created a vibrant holiday and golf hub, all within easy reach of

the beach. Home for Jeremy, Eva and their four children was Henley on Thames and the family also had a spell stateside. Jeremy’s background in finance and Eva’s in marketing and media aligned well with a business venture, but what was it that drew them to this particular part of North Cornwall? “I had always loved holidaying in Cornwall,” explained Jeremy. “My grandfather bought a house overlooking Constantine Bay in 1970, and that was the place we went for childhood holidays every Easter and two weeks in the Summer. I have fond memories of playing golf at Trevose, going round and round the short course. It was and still remains a wonderful family friendly environment. For me it was freedom because in Henley we lived in the middle of nowhere and here I could walk everywhere, to the beach, to play golf, to meet friends. Later, we also spent our own family summers in Cornwall or on the south coast of Below: Jeremy and Eva Davies walking their dogs on Constantine Beach

Norway, where Eva is from, so we’ve always had an affinity with the sea.” Jeremy and Eva purchased the remnants of Roserrow Golf and Country Club in 2012 from the administrators and set about creating The Point. “Our dream was to create a family focused environment that was both attractive to holidaymakers and the local community.” Eva further explained “It was a complete leap of faith. Our original intention was never to be actively involved in the dayto-day management but assist with the purchase of the assets. We put a team in place, but sadly the summer of 2012 was an unmitigated disaster! Britain hosting the Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee and rain all summer was not a great combination for Cornwall’s tourist industry, and so we had to change tack and become hands-on.” Despite the early setback, Jeremy knew that they could make The Point a success: “I am a very strong believer in location, location. Wherever we have bought a property, location has been the driver.” Combining this with his own passion for golf, the dream was to create a happy and accessible place for everyone. The Point now incorporates a range of two-bedroom holiday cottages, five-bedroom detached holiday homes as well as seven new contemporary, luxury holiday apartments with architecture and interiors inspired by Scandinavian seaside living, and fantastic views towards the sea, Newlands Island and Pentire Point. “We have been incredibly lucky to have been supported by the homeowners in Roserrow and the local community”. Alongside the accommodation, the continued investment in the golf course means that it now boasts greens considered to be some of the best in the county. Add in tennis courts, a health club, indoor pool, Bear Bar and a restaurant and you can see why the resort is so popular with guests and day visitors alike. They are also lucky enough to have some wonderful art from local artist Jethro

Jackson alongside some stunning photographs by David Yarrow. “Although it is a proprietary business, we very much want our members and visitors to feel like they are a part of something. It may sound clichéd but our intention has always been that The Point is inclusive not exclusive. We’re all about our members, customers, visitors and also our staff – many of whom are local and return to us year on year,” adds Jeremy.

stay

Not a couple to rest on their laurels, there are further development and future growth plans for the site. They have recently doubled the size of the terrace to cater for additional al fresco dining and there is also some ecoaccommodation on the horizon. “Although the first three or four years were all about survival, the last three or four years have been about consolidation, while continuing to invest. The business is now on a really solid footing and we are looking for quite ambitious growth and further enhancement of all the facilities across The Point. We are fully booked for this summer and are now taking bookings into the shoulder seasons and looking to a busy year going forward.” Today, The Point is at a place where Jeremy and Eva can take more of a back seat and enjoy the lifestyle that their own home in Constantine Bay offers. They were lucky enough to be able to purchase a plot just yards from Jeremy’s original family home in 2006, with views of the Atlantic Ocean. They then set about building their own holiday house, with no idea it was to become their main home in years to come. Both enjoy sea swimming and continue to do so even

through the winter months. “It’s certainly invigorating and good for the mind, body and soul!” says Eva “We’ve got working cocker spaniels, so we spend a lot of time walking on the cliffs, north towards Mother Ivey’s Bay and south to Porthcothan. We are lucky to hear the ocean when we go to bed and again when we wake up in the morning. We feel amazingly spoiled. If you’re not careful, you can take it for granted; we have to keep reminding ourselves how lucky we are to live here.” Jeremy and Eva love being able to enjoy both beautiful sides of the Camel Estuary; with The Point at Polzeath on one side, returning home to enjoy the sanctuary of home on the other. www.thepointatpolzeath.co.uk 24

ife’s most definitely a beach at this art-deco inspired hotel that’s set atop the cliffs above Daymer Bay. With a venerable history dating back to the 1930s, and boasting a host of accolades and awards during its lifetime, any stay here is sure to rejuvenate and revive. The hotel offers a range of rooms catering for every taste. Our new normal requires more ‘space’ and the architecture at the St Moritz lends itself to this perfectly. The ethos here has always been one of ‘stylish spaciousness’ so, from the large suites, coastal villas and apartments to frankly gorgeous hotel rooms, everything feels open and opulent. And always with that little extra in mind, book a king room and you’ll have exclusive use of your own poolside beach

hut; you’ll be hard-pressed not to feel like a 1930s movie star! New for this year are garden suites; king and cosy rooms that can be booked as a pod. These rooms share a private hallway and the interiors exude cool, coastal charm invoking a modern villa feel, with pops of nautical colour. They are ideally-suited to a group or family, giving the combination of bedroom privacy, across three rooms, along with a lounge area, kitchen and outdoor patio. During last summer, the St Moritz’s Anti Social Club was the talk of the town. A purpose-built structure offered private dining rooms, serviced by individual hatches from a long central corridor. guests were able to enjoy delicious menus in safety, and it earned the hotel Gold at the Cornwall Tourism Award in the Innovation category at the beginning of the year, followed by an incredible Silver in the same category at the South West Tourism Awards in April. As restrictions are lifted, the hotel is now delighted to be welcoming back it’s à la carte restaurant, bar terrace and poolside café. The Shorecrest Restaurant, headed up by chef Jonathan Domé and his team who continue to uphold the hotel’s long-established values of impeccable service, ambience and gastronomy, create seasonal dishes with ingredients sourced from Cornwall’s bountiful larder. The design and décor in the dining room, along with the rest of the hotel, is the work of Cornwall-based design consultants, Absolute, whose team have combined ‘urban chic with coastal retreat’ to create an environment where laid-back living can be achieved against the backdrop of an exclusive location. For a more informal experience, small tapas plates are served on the bar terrace and poolside, you’ll find the Seaside Café with a deli-style offering, plus takeaway from the pizza oven. From here you can sample a light lunch while soaking up the amazing views across the Camel Estuary to Stepper Point. This area of the hotel grounds is great for families; little ones can let off some steam on the lawns or splash in the pool, while mum and dad enjoy a drink. It goes without saying that the North Cornish coast is a veritable ocean playground, but there’s no doubt that we all need to balance our playtime with some downtime. Easily done here; St Moritz is all about the chill. Its Cowshed Spa is the only one you’ll find outside of the luxury Soho House properties. Adopting the beauty philosophy of Babington House in Somerset, beauty products are based on English country garden botanicals to nourish body and soul. Six stylish treatment rooms offer private bliss-time or romantic couples’ massages; you’ll leave feeling regrounded, reconnected and ultimately relaxed. www.stmoritzhotel.co.uk 27

azBar is an exciting new cocktail delivery and event service established in 2019 by friends Kathryn McDonnell and Zoë Keeble. Following the success of their pop-up bar at the Port Isaac Carnival, Kathryn and Zoë realised they had a ready-made business idea on their hands. Sadly, the pandemic put paid to their events bookings for 2020 and so the pair diversified into cocktail deliveries (ordered and paid for online or via social media and delivered within 15 miles of Port Isaac), which have proved to be a

huge hit.” As lockdown lifts, the stylish mobile horsebox bar will once again be available for special events and weddings – you can even personalise your celebration and create and name a bespoke cocktail to mark the occasion. Cocktail-making parties are also available if you fancy a go at making your own sundowner. The seasonal cocktail deliveries proved such a success that these will be continuing throughout the year, so you can sip a Strawberry Mojito at your favourite beach or indulge in a Piña Colada delivered direct to your holiday home.

ne of the oldest settled farms in Cornwall, and owned by just four families during its illustrious history, Roscarrock, currently owned and run by the Sloman family, has been an established holiday destination and coastal wedding venue for 25 years. The 750-acre farm is on a beautiful, 3.5-mile stretch of exquisite coastline between Port Quin and Port Isaac, taking in the headlands at Lobber Point above Port Isaac, Varley Head and Kellan Head above Port Quin. A COASTAL

holidays

North Cornwall offers the ultimate romantic destination for couples, with the chance to reconnect and relax

1

There’s nothing quite like the great outdoors for creating happy hearts. The Camel Trail links Padstow, Wadebridge and Bodmin and offers a gentle, level cycle along the estuary, taking in some breathtaking views. With plenty of picnic spots along the way, why not pick up some tasty local treats from Stein’s Deli (www.rickstein.com) in Padstow and enjoy a picnic at one of the many spots along the way. From the shelter of the estuary to the more rugged clifftops, the South West Coast Path offers endless exploration along the north Cornwall’s coastline. With plenty of secluded coves along the way, tuck yourselves away with nothing but the sound of the sea and the gulls for company.

2

North Cornwall is famous for its sunsets. Endless stretches of golden sand beaches come alive at dusk when the sky lights up with vibrant hues of orange and pink as the sun dips down behind the ocean. One of our favourite places to watch the sun go down is from the terrace at the Atlantic Kitchen & Bar (www.atlanticbarandkitchen. com) in Polzeath. With a glass of something cold in hand, you can enjoy ringside seats for this most romantic of natural light shows.

3

What better way to spend time together than recollecting the highlights of your day over a meal in one of North Cornwall’s incredible restaurants. Michelin-starred Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen (www.outlaws.co.uk) offers intimate dining in the heart of Port Isaac village with an exclusive sharing menu. For a more relaxed experience, Paul Ainsworth’s pub, The Mariner’s (www.paulainsworth.co.uk/the-mariners) at Rock is a place to kick back and enjoy a plate of something delicious, while sampling some local ales.

4

For a romantic evening in, without any of the work, we recommend enjoying a sundowner (or two!) from the Kaz Bar’s (www.kazbarcornwall.co.uk) enviable list of cocktails, delivered direct to your holiday accommodation. Complement this with dinner brought to your door by Fee’s Food (www.feesfood.co.uk) and your night will be complete. Fee’s three-course menus, use locally sourced ingredients and come readyprepared for you to simply heat up and serve.

CHANGING LIVES FOR THE BETTER Supporting vital community work across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

T

he Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF) was set up in 2003 to support vital volunteerrun grass-roots community projects. Since then, it has invested over £11 million in projects across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly through an extensive programme of grant-awarding. Pre-Covid, Cornwall was already ranked as one of the poorest counties in the UK and so it’s with little surprise that the pandemic hit the Duchy hard. Without the influx of visitors, the tourism and hospitality industry (and its suppliers) were hit particularly hard and many families experienced financial deprivation, having to turn to their community for support.

The community groups we support have demonstrated amazing resilience, innovation, and determination to help their neighbours.” While Cornwall is a fantastic place to live, work and visit, it is easy to forget that it remains one of the poorest counties in England. CCF’s research indicates that community groups will be providing emergency and crisis services long into the future. Tamas continues: “We will draw on our experience of working both with our community groups who are straining every sinew to help people who are struggling and our donors who enthusiastically provide support so that all Cornish people can flourish. The impact of the Covid crisis on the lives of the people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is far from over and our communities still need your support.”

Chief Executive of CCF, Tamas Haydu tells us: “The need for our services has been greater than ever in the pandemic. Those who live in or love Cornwall have risen magnificently to the challenge enabling us to support more than 90,000 people and 170 community groups in 2020 with emergency and crisis funding with grants totalling £1.3 million.

“Over the course of the pandemic, CCF has granted a staggering £262,000 to 16 food banks in Cornwall. We are grateful that we can help food banks with their increased demand, although we are saddened that demand for their services continues to increase.”

“We supported community groups from food banks and homeless shelters to medicine deliveries and bereavement services. Our funding meant that these incredible groups, like Wadebridge Foodbank, could pull out all the stops to help everyone struggling in their communities.

One of the food banks to benefit from a CCF grant was Wadebridge Foodbank and Storehouse which opened in 36

Cornwall Community Foundation’s aim is to change people’s lives for the better by developing the strength of local communities. The aim is a Cornwall free of poverty and social isolation. The Foundation looks for non-profit, grassroots organisations and aids them financially by raising funds from individuals and businesses both in and outside of Cornwall.

2009, and in 10 years has fed almost 31,000 people from their centres in Wadebridge, Bodmin and Camelford. Since 21 March 2020, the food bank has provided the equivalent of 95,000 meals, which means demand has increased by around 21%. CCF awarded £18,000 in grants to Wadebridge Foodbank in 2020, including the kind and generous donation by John Bray and Partners for the Foodbank.

To find out more about the work of the Foundation, or to make a donation, please visit www.cornwallfoundation.com

Founder, Jacqui White MBE said: “In short, we try to restore dignity and revive hope. We believe everyone should have enough food and not have to choose between eat or heat and having good furniture and beds. Cornwall Community Foundation has been amazing. They have different pots of money for different things and a crisis fund, so anything we consider to be a crisis, we can dip into that money.”

Wadebridge Foodbank Wadebridge Foodbank and Storehouse provides emergency food, furniture, crisis grants, support and signposting to local people in crisis. For more information on how to donate food or to support financially visit

CCF Chairman, Jane Hartley DL, says “This has been a challenging time for everyone and we have been truly moved by the generosity of our supporters. Sadly, the Covid crisis continues to wreak its havoc on the lives of people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Please do donate if you can. Every pound makes a difference and means groups like Wadebridge Foodbank and Storehouse will survive, changing people’s lives for the better.”

ohn Bray & Partners estate agency has chosen 2021, its 50th Birthday year, to organise a charity art auction jointly in aid of the Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF) and the Wadebridge FoodBank – two charities close to the agency’s heart. At the end of 2020, a very difficult year for so many people, John Bray & Partners supported the Wadebridge Foodbank with a generous donation, helping local families struggling to make ends meet in the aftermath of the pandemic.

You will be able to see and bid on all of the artworks online once the auction launches at a secret date this summer and all monies raised will go direct to the two named charities.

Register To receive your email invitation to the exclusive launch date, please scan the QR code below and register your interest. You will then receive a VIP invitation to preview the Art Auction when it launches.

The agency also previously helped to establish a North Cornwall fund via the CCF and Josephine Ashby, the agency’s managing partner, sits on the grants panel that regularly provides grants for local groups and organisations ranging from the St Minver Brownies to the Port Isaac Village Hall, Mental Health charities, youth projects and care homes among others.

Proud to support:

With the support of North Cornwall artists, photographers and illustrators this year’s auction will raise much needed funds for the two chosen local charities. So far there are 23 lots, and the showcase of talent is amazing with a huge variety of artwork, from digital pieces to watercolour compositions, originals and limited editions. John Bray and Partners are incredibly grateful to all of the local North Cornwall artists, photographers and illustrators who have given so generously to support the community.

eorge Stephens, aka Gstee, is an abstract aerial photographer based on Cornwall’s north coast. Predominantly shooting seascapes around the county, its changing seasons and swells offer endless inspiration and a creative flow. Self-taught, Gstee has had an interest in capturing moments on camera for as long as he can remember. This, mixed with an interest in aviation, has allowed him to develop and evolve an abstract style of photography that allows a blend of imagination. Creating conceptual imagery, his images take the viewer on a journey, letting their imagination decipher the subject, and in doing so invite a moment in the present. Gstee’s desire in sharing his emotive images of our oceans, is to evoke respect for our vast, yet fragile environment.

of escapism. I have recently been on a few international trips where I had the chance to shoot new terrain, including the salt flats of Northern Spain and the volcanic island of Fuerteventura. It is a privilege to be able to share these often unseen viewpoints of our beautiful natural world.” We are very privileged to be able to showcase Gstee’s work on this issue’s cover.

urated by Cornish landscape artist Jethro Jackson, Jackson Gallery shows an everchanging collection of work by both established and emerging artists. The gallery was established in February 2020 to fulfil Jethro’s wish to show the work of the artists and makers he admires most from around the UK. It also means that he can focus solely on painting at his studio in Porthilly, which is the perfect spot for him to concentrate on creating new work and ticking off the long list of commissions and larger personal projects. Jethro explains, “The gallery gives me a chance for me to show the work that I enjoy, alongside my own. We know all of our artists and makers personally and it’s important to us to have a real understanding of their processes. Everything you see in the gallery has a story of how it was made.”

JacksonGallery2021.indd 2

Later in the year, they will be showing new paintings by Ann Armitage, Tom Hoar, Neil Pinkett and Elsa Taylor and a rolling presentation of pots and ceramics by Cornwallbased makers Jack Doherty, Deborah Mitchell, Chris Prindl and Paul Jackson. Check out the website for a full listing of events and work for sale.

WHERE? The Gallery is almost right at the end of Rock Road, near the ferry point and handily close to the Quarry car park. There is a large Hamish Mackie sculpture of a Cretaceous ammonite fossil directly outside, so it’s hard to miss!

Abstract, vivid, colourful and energetic, Nina experiments with perspective, colour and style, creating a unique alternative to the classic seascape.

to make it more interesting so that it’s not like looking at a photograph…to make it more surreal in a way.” Nina often has several pieces on the go at once. “It’s sometimes good to take breaks between paintings and work on something different, get some new headspace before you go back. Knowing when it’s finished and when to stop is always the challenge.”

Growing up in Rock, Cornwall, Nina learned to surf in the waters of Polzeath and to paint alongside her creative family. With a studio in Rock, she now lives in Trelights and travels to various surf hotspots around the world for fresh inspiration. Travelling offers a stripped-back period of time where Nina can focus solely on the sea and painting, perfect for capturing the atmosphere of the environment in which she is immersed.

Nina’s paintings evoke feelings of appreciation and admiration, not only for exotic shorelines, but also for the magic of home. They showcase the beauty and comfort that the ocean, whether near or far, can provide to us all. The past year has been a turbulent one for many, but Nina has used this time to focus: “In the first lockdown, I was able to be quiet with myself and my work, and I tried to encourage people to travel within my paintings. I think there is a sense of wanderlust within the pieces, a sense of going somewhere by looking through this window of work.”

Despite the enticement of new landscapes, Nina’s home in Cornwall always calls her back, never failing to surprise her, with its abundance of hidden coves and ever-changing scenery. The natural landscape provides endless inspiration for Nina: “Cornwall is really good for that because the energy is so dramatic.” The process of Nina’s work begins with her drone, which enables her to explore the coastline from above. “Translating photos that you take onto paint is always challenging,” she explains. “You have to have a fine balance. You can play with it and depict it in so many ways. I have such a relationship with colour. The way the yellow might complement the blue or a green works well next to an orange. I’m always looking at the colours next to each other, and how they make each other pop.”

Nina’s next project is a local one, working with Watergate Bay Hotel. She will be creating a collection based on Watergate Bay and its surrounding beaches. The artworks will be displayed in an exhibition, before adorning the hotel walls. This demonstrates how, no matter how far Nina’s travels take her, the Cornish coast will continue to be an influence and hold a special place in her heart and in her artistic imagination. Nina’s work is currently showing at the Jackson Gallery in Rock, with a group exhibition in June at Newquay’s North Coast Asylum and a large solo show to follow at the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives later this August. There will also be the exciting opportunity of seeing Nina’s work en plein air this year, details of which will be announced via her Studio Newsletter. You can sign up via the website to find out more.

This use of colour is what is striking about her work, as she pulls unusual shades of orange, green and pink out of largely blue ocean scenes. “I try to exaggerate colours. It’s sometimes nice to change the colour palette all together,

Introducing

WHITEWATER CONTEMPORARY Spring 2021 has brought the official launch of Whitewater Contemporary, the new and progressive big sister to Whitewater Gallery, Polzeath. Expect striking new talent and stunning new works, on show at one of Cornwall’s loveliest locations

ake a walk through the heart of Polzeath and you will see that the original Whitewater Gallery, with its wide windows and ocean view, is now paired with an adjoining, ‘white cube’ style space. Whitewater Contemporary has been specially designed for the display of large-scale contemporary painting and unique works of sculpture, ceramics and applied art. Its custom fit interior and movable wall system give it the elegance and flexibility of a London gallery, and its ambitions are equally as far reaching. “Whitewater Gallery has become really well known for painting, print and ceramics over the last ten years” says gallery Director Nick Wapshott, “but we felt it was time to scale up our exhibition space to meet the growing expectations of our collectors. Opening Whitewater Contemporary has more than doubled our floorspace, and significantly increased the scale and

diversity of works we can show. That’s great for our artists, and our collectors as well, and has allowed us to put together a wonderful schedule of exhibitions for this year and next. We have a great mix of established gallery artists, and have invited some new and really high-profile artists from across the UK, so we have some surprises planned.” Central to the gallery’s offering is its year-round series of Featured Artist exhibitions, on show in its dedicated solo exhibition space. April opened with an exhibition by award winning artist Luke Knight, followed by much loved scene painter Simeon Stafford from 1st May, while Suki Wapshott, whose landscapes and abstract paintings have become synonymous with Polzeath, are on show in June. British ceramicist Hannah Billingham exhibits at Whitewater for the very first time in July, and August sees a new collection from Port Isaac based artist Caroline Cleave. In September,

master potter Hugh West will present a landmark exhibition celebrating his 50th year in ceramics. “Hugh has been an important artist to us for many years,” says Nick. “We feel really proud to be holding his anniversary exhibition here at Whitewater Contemporary.” Painter Virginia Ray will be October’s Featured Artist, followed by a second show in November from Suki Wapshott, finishing in December with new work by ceramicist and silversmith Rachael Osborne.

and explore an entire exhibition from the comfort of their own sofa, as well as regular Virtual Showcases of new work online. “Our experience of lockdown has changed a lot of things” says Nick, “including the way we view and buy art. We’ve become so used to engaging with venues remotely that it’s a necessity now, and a positive one, because it allows us to welcome more visitors to Whitewater Contemporary in more ways. The 3D tour is something really special, it gives greater access to our shows, and greater confidence to collectors who are interested in buying remotely. These things are becoming an essential part of the art buying experience.”

The gallery’s main space offers an ongoing mix of collections by artists from Cornwall and further afield, including large scale paintings, exceptionally beautiful studio ceramics, and plinths displaying wonderful objects from the cutting edge of contemporary applied art. Equally cutting edge is the gallery’s high-resolution Virtual 3D Tour, which allows buyers to ‘walk through’ the gallery

lex Key and Freddie Woodruff are the culinary brains behind Boscastle’s hottest new eaterie. Having run Noco, a successful specialist food company based in London, for the last eight years, the pair wanted to celebrate their Cornish roots and realise their dream of opening a restaurant on Cornwall’s fashionable north coast. After a few years of searching for the right location, and testing the water with a series of successful barbecue pop-ups, the pair were eventually able to find the premises they were looking for – a beautiful, Victorian brick-built building in the heart of Boscastle. It feels fitting that the premises were a former crab and lobster shop, as now The Rocket Store offers a burgeoning tapas-style, daily blackboard menu featuring the freshest seafood

from Alex’s family’s boat, alongside locally-reared organic meat from their farm and vegetables grown nearby. The ethos behind The Rocket Store has always been one of shared enjoyment, with long trestle tables inside and out, where diners can enjoy sociable harbourside dining. Pandemic times have meant that seating has had to be re-thought, which Alex and Freddie have done very cleverly to ensure their diner’s safety while maintaining an intimate, yet informal offering. They are still able to incorporate an open kitchen which means whoever is chef-patron for the day, the pair share the role, can still interact with the diners, and the very fact that the menu is tapas-style perpetuates the sharing ethos. With Alex’s experience catering for the top fashion and media circuit, combined with Freddie’s time at

13/05/2021 11:11

London’s Kricket and Michelin-starred Chez Bruce, their philosophy of cuisine is at once eclectic, yet refined, pared-back yet full of flavour. Every dish is cooked with the passion and care that underpins all of the food at The Rocket Store, celebrating Cornish produce combined with influences from other cuisines. Serving both lunch and dinner, as well as small plates to be enjoyed with a glass of something from the incredibly well-thought-out wine list, the small, yet perfectlyformed menu strongly features the bounty of the sea. The dishes are so tempting that you would be forgiven for ordering them all, and diners regularly do. Small plates range from the freshest Porthilly oysters and butterflied mackerel, straight off the dayboat, served with a pungent thai dressing, ‘Nam Jim,’ to grilled scallops, swimming in locally foraged seaweed butter. The larger dishes, also designed for sharing, are super seasonal with The Rocket Store menu changing daily depending upon what ingredients are available. You might be lucky to find a whole Dover sole chalked up on the board while locally-caught lobster and crab grace the menu regularly, alongside some super fresh sea bass sashimi. For non-meat eaters, vegetables and pulses are as much a highlight – in season you can sample succulent treats such as wild mushrooms, Cornish sunkissed corn on the cob and a dish of fried chickpeas with a yoghurt dressing is one not to be missed. The dining experience at The Rocket Store offers something for everyone. There are those who drop in for a bite of lunch, perhaps a succulent spicy fish cake accompanied by a glass of chilled white, while on a cliff walk. For others, the complete experience comes at dinner service with the opportunity for a convivial culinary evening, tasting the full menu. As you can imagine, The Rocket Store is a favourite of many and so early booking is recommended. www.therocketstore.co.uk

TIME FOR TEA

O

ffering luxury homemade afternoon tea boxes, cream teas, mouthwatering grazing boxes and delectable desserts delivered direct to your door, as well as personalised party catering, Spill the Tea Wadebridge is the perfect way to treat yourself, family or friends. Launched in February this year by Laura Jones and Alex Higgs, after Alex was furloughed from his head chef job and Laura was on maternity leave from her role in finance, the entrepreneurial pair noticed a gap in the market for their fresh, tasty, homemade food. Their wealth of experience in hospitality stood them in good stead for this new venture borne out by the fact that they sold out for Mother’s Day within hours of launching. Such has been the

demand that Laura’s sister, Katie, has now joined full time so they can deliver sweet and savoury delights seven days a week. These lovely gifts and tasty treats have been a tonic for lockdown celebrations and garden parties: “Picnic food is really on trend at the moment!” laughs Laura. Whether for a moment of pure, selfindulgence, to celebrate a birthday or special anniversary or just to tell someone that you love them, these transportable treats are just the ticket. A website is on the way, but in the meantime, they will deliver within 15 miles of Wadebridge for a small fee, going further afield for larger orders. Be warned they often sell out, so book early via direct message on social media or email spilltheteawadebridge@gmail.com

HEART

The Pig at Harlyn Bay combines culinary excellence with a homely charm

Pig is not just any hotel; a restaurant with rooms is the preferred moniker. A combination of carefully chosen properties in unique locations offers a signature style that is at once curious and eclectic, yet charming and stylish. Revolutionising the British hotel experience, owner Robin Hutson and wife Judy personally curate this hugely coveted group of hotels, the latest of which to open is The Pig at Harlyn Bay. With food at the fore, and a desire that when you walk through the doors you feel relaxed and at home, this North coast boutique hotel offers a unique retreat on the clifftops, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

but each with unique touches; for example, at Harlyn Bay, you’ll find your mini-bar housed in an antique larder. Hotel Director, Mark Jones, explains: “When you enter a Pig, you should know you’re in a Pig. However, saying that, there’s absolutely no sort of copy and paste. They’re not blueprints of each other and having worked in almost all of them, every one of them has its own individual feel.”

Dating back to the 16th century with Medieval, Jacobean and Georgian features, the Grade II listed building is nothing short of impressive. Approached by a long driveway, expect to be welcomed into a traditional Map Room, greeted by a warming wood-burner if the weather is inclement. Beyond this, a snug invites unwinding with a glass of something from the enviable wine list. Rooms ooze boutique charm, all recognisable as a ‘Pig’ room,

“We are definitely a food and beverage-led operation. But that doesn’t detract from our room offering. Attention to detail is a huge thing. When you come to stay, we want

54

you to feel like we’re inviting you into our house. So rather than the traditional ‘home-away-from-home’ take on accommodation, at a Pig you should feel like you are going to stay at a friend’s place” At the heart of The Pig at Harlyn Bay, as with every member of this porcine family of luxury retreats, is food. Its Kitchen Garden, tended by Head Gardener Andy Moore, provides year-round vegetables as well as following the group ethos that 85% of all produce should come from within a 25 miles radius of each hotel. “Every dish on our menu is touched by produce from the Kitchen Garden,” says Mark, “and we always have several dishes on our menu where something selected from the garden is the hero of the dish, making dining here an incredible experience for vegetarians and vegans. We often joke that Andy almost dictates the dishes more than our Head Chef, Adam Bristow does! We don’t just grow your standard salad leaves, leeks and carrots; there’s a whole variety of different produce and even our own mushrooms to sample!”

result of this purposeful mismatching is breathtaking. The Pig at Harlyn Bay also boasts an additional eaterie. The Lobster Shed has an easy, East Coast vibe, with an energy and pace of the service that inspires fun dining – set to an ocean view backdrop and laid back blues soundtrack. Lobster is the king of the menu, but there are also small plates, steaks and vegetarian dishes cooked in wood ovens or over charcoal for the ultimate outdoor dining experience, ever-popular with both guests and day visitors alike. Combine all of this with unique Potting Shed treatment rooms, and a stay at The Pig at Harlyn Bay should be on everyone’s North Coast wish list.

Sourcing ingredients within 25 miles, means that diners are treated to the very best of Cornwall’s larder. “Fish and seafood of course,” continues Mark, “but also awardwinning duck and some of the finest beef you’ll ever taste. The menu changes daily, depending on what ingredients are in season and so you can dine from the menu on consecutive nights and always experience a new dish. For guests on an extended stay, Adam is happy to create a bespoke dish for you. There might be a particular cut of meat or a fish you would like to try, or an ingredient in the Kitchen Garden that has tempted your taste buds. We really look to personalise guest’s longer stays with us.”

www.thepighotel.com/at-harlyn-bay/

Even the dining room at The Pig at Harlyn Bay is an experience in itself. Traditional uniformity is not the order of the day. Instead, you’ll be met with a gleaming array of individually sourced pieces – water glasses will be exquisite, but not the same colour. Your gin and tonic won’t arrive in matching glasses. Every choice, of every piece, has been made consciously and the

The Harbour Brewing Co. is taking the world of craft beer by storm

T

urn the clock back just a decade and you’ll find that craft beer was in its infancy, with just 100 or so independent breweries in the UK. Fast forward a few years, and the country’s culture began to see a change; a desire for more bespoke, craft-led products across both the food and drink industry, with provenance and taste beginning to bubble to the top over price and mass-production.

So it was that in 2012, Eddie Lofthouse and brewer-friend, Rhys Powell, were sitting in Padstow Harbour enjoying a beer. Eddie was looking for a new challenge so, inspired by their north Cornwall surroundings and “always dreaming of beer”, the next step was inevitable…to set up a brewery. Premises were first on the agenda, but to obtain the water quality that is so essential to the brewing process, an actual harbourside location wasn’t viable. The Harbour Brewing Co. set down its roots in Bodmin, aptly equidistant from Cornwall’s north and south coast harbours. Neither could have imagined what was ahead, but a shared passion and determination saw the first brews reach the shelves later that year. A wildcard entry of their first Classic IPA into Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt caused a stir amongst the brewing world and resulted in a win. A successful year on the shelves of a leading supermarket saw the team consolidate its position as Cornwall’s, and indeed one of the UK’s, most innovative brewers. Agility is certainly behind the company’s success, with the brewing team able to react quickly to any market changes, brewing ranges specifically for current demands, as Adam Sargent, Brand Guy

at Harbour Brewing Co. explains: “Four to six years ago, everyone wanted clear, bright beers, with a focus on colour, clarity, and carbonation – now the trend is about how hazy a beer is and what fruit notes can be extracted from hops. The market is ever-evolving and we have to follow what it does, because it is still quite a cut-throat business.” It’s no wonder that Harbour Brewing Co. has to keep on its toes, at the last count there are now over 2000 breweries in the UK, so competition is high.

anything, sets the beers apart elevated by the use of the very best of additional ingredients. The Bodmin site boasts two breweries. One, a more clinical, large-batch brewery which is all about producing beer consistent in quality. The other is used as an R&D facility, where more experimental, mixed fermentation and sour beers are produced. From humble beginnings, the Harbour Brewing Co. now brews up to 7500 hectolitres a year, with 60% of that volume destined for high-end restaurants. You’ll find the beers in London’s Hawksmoor and Brigadier restaurants and The Ned Hotel, to name just a few prestigious city locations. In Cornwall, Rick Stein and Nathan Outlaw both recognise the superior quality of the Harbour family of beers and pair them with their dishes as you would a fine wine. And you can, of course, sip a cold Harbour beer with an ocean view, enjoyed alongside a pizza or small plate, at the Atlantic Bar and Kitchen in Polzeath.

Taste and tradition are what set a Harbour brew apart, combined with an element of modern, forward thinking, all while brewing beers that are consistent in taste and quality. Adam goes on to say: “We’re really lucky to have our own spring, using the water for our brewing straight from its Cornish source. It is very soft water and this lends itself perfectly to lagers and pilsners.” Maintaining a traditional method of making the beer, the process takes three to four weeks in order for flavours to marry and the taste to be just right. The use of clear Cornish spring water, more than

AN IMMERSIVE

EXPERIENCE Award-winning, international design expert Nicola O’Mara, on the art of the interior

jo hnbraysale s.co.uk

I

t would make sense for an interior designer to love art, and Nicola O’Mara is no exception. A passion for design led to a degree in textiles and a first foray into the world of work as the interiors arm of a construction company. Fascinated by colour, fabric and form, Nicola’s natural aptitude for interiors saw her buy the company, creating a hugely successful showroom and studio in Bristol.

“This means that I can tweak the interiors to suit each client and their individual needs. Whereas a developer will be concerned with getting the house built, I dig deeper into the family’s lives, forming a close working relationship with them. I’ll ask how are they going to use it, how will certain areas function, where will they eat, where will they sleep? Even down to details such as where are they going to wash the dog! It’s a lot about ergonomics and the intimate relationship a family has with a home.”

The lure of the sea, however, was too much. A desire for a lifestyle change saw Nicola and her family take the leap of faith to move to Cornwall: “We just thought, we want to be in Cornwall, we love Cornwall.” Holidays in Rock and Port Isaac as a child drew Nicola to the north coast and a renovation project of her own, Albany in Port Isaac was the first Cornish property to receive the O’Mara magic touch. Self-confessed as not having a signature style, Nicola prefers to be guided by the client and the property itself, whether that be its location or architecture. “Every client and property is unique,” says Nicola, “it might be that it’s an investment property and therefore essential that the design helps to maximise rental returns. Alternatively, I could be working on a ‘forever home’ and then the client will have their own thoughts and ideas. It could even be a combination of the two, requiring an interior that functions for both uses – it’s all about balance.” For Nicola, interior design is both a consultative and iterative process: “I begin with a long meeting with the client, getting to know them, and finding out what’s important to them for their property. I’ll then create initial mood boards and, if the client isn’t local to the area, we can easily work remotely. It’s very much about working from the ground up, getting involved at the architect stage if possible, having that all-important input into the initial layouts of the property.

Nicola’s passion for textures and natural materials is evident in her designs, creating interiors with a timeless elegance: “I love layers upon layers of different textures. For example, if there is an old stone wall in a property, let’s embrace that by exposing it and putting some lovely linens next to it so that it’s really organic.” To achieve such rich designs, Nicola sources a lot of her pieces from Scandinavia, Belgium, Denmark and Spain. This allows her the breadth of choice and style that is needed when working across a wide gamut of luxury properties. “I do source from abroad,” explains Nicola, “but I try and buy pieces that have longevity and will last a lifetime. It’s all about quality rather than a throwaway culture.” Nicola also offers a turnkey service for those who prefer a completely hands-off approach, designing not only the interiors but fitting out the entire property, right down to the details of bedding and kitchenware. Working hand-inhand with her design team, project coordinator and stylist, the results are creative and distinctive designs that are ultimately beautiful. Nicola has recently worked on projects in Mawgan Porth, Polzeath and Port Isaac as well as properties in Bath and the French Alps. www.nicolaomara.com

ith over 15 years of experience in the construction industry, Matt Dixon of Huers Construction Consultancy is helping clients realise their property goals, stress-free. Since setting up his consultancy in 2018, Matt has been providing a bespoke project management service to both private high-end residential and commercial clients across the north coast of Cornwall and beyond.

of the build. This may be due to a lack of knowledge about the building process, a lack of time, being remote from the property or a combination of the three. During the initial stages, Matt will take the planning permission, documents and construction drawings and organise a tender process to select a contractor for his client. “From the point of selecting a contractor, I then supervise the entire build ensuring the work is completed to the highest standard, on time and on budget. Any questions about the build come through me and so my clients are protected and shielded from the nitty-gritty, day-to-day queries that might come up.” Often Matt’s clients might be located hundreds of miles away from the project and so his presence gives peace of mind that everything is being taken care of in their absence. Matt will normally visit

“Most often, my clients will have purchased a property or plot. They might already be working with an architect and have even gone through the planning process when they come to me,” explains Matt. With drawings and planning in place, Matt’s interaction with a client usually begins when they don’t know how best to proceed with the practicalities 64

most sites at least twice a week, to be the client’s eyes and ears, ensuring that their interest is represented and their significant investment is being spent wisely, carefully and correctly.

Cornwall coast. Such breadth of experience and continued development on Matt’s part, means that in early 2020 he became a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). Following this in early 2021, Huers Construction Consultancy itself became registered as a Chartered Building Consultancy, a high accolade indeed as one of only two in Cornwall. For Matt, the membership: “is a mark of quality and something that sets us apart, giving our clients independent quality assurance.”

Matt’s experience in the construction industry means that his black book of contacts is enviable: “I have great working relationships with many excellent contractors and so am able to call in the right people, at the right time. I am also able to protect the interests of my clients, especially when Cornwall’s north coast can command high prices and competition.” As Matt is both the eyes and ears on the ground for his clients, communication is key. “Every time I visit a site, I take multiple photographs,” explains Matt. “These are then sent back to clients, along with a progress report, and then we undertake a monthly evaluation of work. I find that photographs are the most important thing because it allows clients to see something tangible for their investment.”

Matt concludes: “For some, project management may not be at the forefront of their minds when undertaking a build or renovation. However, especially if a client is trying to manage a build remotely or is busy with their own work and family, employing a construction consultant will remove the headache of trying to balance time, investment, contractors, quality and deadlines; ultimately, allowing the achievement of a dream home with maximum confidence and minimum stress.”

With involvement across both substantial, luxury new builds and listed building renovations and extensions, Matt’s has worked on multiple projects across the north

THE HEART OF THE

HOME

Every kitchen or piece of furniture by Broad & Turner is entirely bespoke, designed and built in their North Cornwall workshop

A

bespoke kitchen and cabinetry can entirely transform your home. From the contemporary to the classic, no one knows this better than Charlie Turner, owner and chief designer at specialist joinery company Broad & Turner, who has been designing beautiful, innovative and functional kitchens for customers all across the southern counties of the UK from London to Cornwall for over 20 years. You could be forgiven for thinking that kitchen design is a simple process; as long as there are worktops, units and the necessary appliances, what more does one need? However, kitchen design has come a long way since the purely functional, tripartite approach of sink, cooker, fridge.

have its own challenge. Our initial approach is very much to understand how a kitchen space will be used. How will you live within it? Are you a family that likes to sit down and share meals? Do you entertain? Is the house a primary or secondary residence? All of these questions do put people’s domestic habits under the microscope, but are essential in defining how people move through and use a kitchen space and ultimately, we want our kitchens to enhance people’s lives.” Working within design-led homes, it is often Charlie’s experience and knowledge that will transform kitchen spaces from initial concepts. Working with the architect at an early stage enables pitfalls to be identified and rectified, saving both time and money. “It’s a lot about ergonomics,” adds Charlie. “How people move and fit within a kitchen space is essential. From simple things, like ensuring your preparation and cooking area isn’t in a traffic route and creating sufficient space around your island unit for

While realising that the basics are essential Charlie explains that it’s not that simple: “A domestic kitchen has to work on many levels and depending on whether we’re working on a Cornish cottage or a large coastal new-build, each will 70

freedom of movement, down to the height of your units. These are all considerations before we even get to the drawing stage.” All of which is essential in the continuing evolution of how we use our kitchens, many of which are now a complete integration into the living area. Rather than be constrained by a particular style, Broad & Turner are customer-led, resulting in a flexibility that spans every facet of kitchen design and layout. Reclaimed timber and stainless steel are as much in-vogue as local stone and even concrete – the choice of materials are endless, as Charlie explains: “It’s fun to break up the design with different materials, colours and textures – this contrast can be really exciting. Under-worktop and cupboard lighting is very important. We work closely with specialist electricians to create some incredible, seamless effects.” Charlie recognises that, alongside visual appeal and being a holistic hub, there also has to be a functional approach. Simple additions such as deep drawers rather than hard-to-access cupboards and swinging arms for kitchen gadgets make clever cookware work even harder. Once a design has been decided, a 3D-CAD drawing brings the space to life, so clients are able to see their kitchen virtually, ahead of the build and installation. Broad & Turner have also recently joined forces with another local company. Finding the perfect partnership with Kernow Fires of Wadebridge, suppliers of quality wood burners and cookers with a service to match, has enabled Broad &Turner to present five of their kitchens in a showroom environment. These incredibly beautiful installations work seamlessly with the Everhot cookers that complement the craftsmanship. A wide range of materials has been used in the showroom kitchens, from solid oak to stainless steel, revealing the company’s versatility and design ingenuity. That, combined with Charlie’s people-first approach is what sets Broad & Turner apart. “I get a huge buzz when, at the end of the day, someone says that they love what we’ve done. The kitchen is where people naturally congregate; whether it be a family space or a place where guests can enjoy a drink. It really is the heartbeat of any home and where I think it should all start from,” concludes Charlie. www.broadandturner.co.uk 71

AN ARCHITECTURAL

ALLIANCE The collaboration between London architects Michael Tarring and Harry Cassell is bringing a unique approach to Cornwall’s built environment

A

fter a hugely successful five years of working together, Michael and Harry are rebranding the architect’s practice, formerly known as Michael Tarring Architects, to Cassell Tarring. This exciting new company finds the two working truly collaboratively, cementing their previous success and creating a springboard for the future. Michael explains: “We formed Cassell Tarring based on our shared values and a collaborative approach. This, combined with our individual expertise, forms the foundation of the practice and has enabled us to deliver an impressive portfolio of refined contemporary homes. Michael Tarring Architects gained a reputation for designing architecturally exciting and highly bespoke homes in Cornwall which underpins Cassell Tarring, and is evident in our continued, uncompromising commitment to design, craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail.”

Both architects, the pair bring complementary attributes and a wealth of experience to the practice. Harry has worked both nationally and internationally, in both large and small scale practices, and his exceptional design acumen and in-depth understanding of the construction process means their projects meet uncompromisingly high standards – standards that define the practice. Michael’s previous experience, alongside his proven reputation for delivering bespoke homes, is grounded in communication and relationship, fostering the needs of the client, reassuring them at every step and ensuring that they feel informed and comfortable. This combination has elevated the delivery that is coming from this London-based studio, offering everything from a full architectural, project management and interior design service, to anything in between. A Cassell Tarring home is always relevant and current; each project is a truly unique building, informed by its context and the aspirations of the client. They are at once designled, progressive, sustainable and modern, pushing the built envelope to maximise the site, while simultaneously being sympathetic to the local vernacular. Recently awarded the Best Single Residence in the UK at the International Property Awards for their project Kai Tak in Polzeath, Cassell Tarring is currently completing some exciting new projects in Cornwall and as the practice moves forward apace, the future is bright for this dynamic pairing. www.casselltarring.com

AN EYE FOR

DESIGN

Lucy Orr Interiors offers a boutique, personal design service; we talk to founder, Lucy Orr to discover more How would you describe Lucy Orr Interiors? A business that provides everything you need for the inside of your home, and which undertakes all aspects of the design process to create functional, timeless and beautiful interiors. I oversee each project that I work on and undertake projects of any size; from a pair of new curtains to a new-build house.

Do you have a signature look or style? When I undertook my training, I developed a classical approach to my work and I do not impose a signature style. I look at spaces and can visualise their potential – transforming them into interiors that sit harmoniously within the architecture, as well as with the client’s belongings. That said, I am a lover of colour and have a passion for fabrics. I have hundreds of samples from all around the world in my studio and have spent many happy hours with clients there creating beautiful interiors.

Tell us more about your customers and catchment area… I’m based in Rock, Cornwall, but can undertake work anywhere in the UK or overseas. My first house renovation was back in 1998, and since then I have completed a variety of projects, including period renovations, conversions and new builds on differing scales, both commercial and residential.

Why do people come to you? My clients usually come to me by recommendation. Working on any project can be stressful for the clients, whether it’s one room or building a whole house. I love what I do and pride myself on bringing a down-to-earth, happy and positive attitude to any project. The key for any client is that it is an enjoyable process, that I take the stress away and create an interior that they love.

What are you currently working on? There is an exciting range of projects happening at the moment; I have three properties in Rock and Trebetherick which have recently been purchased by clients and need complete redecoration and furnishing; a 16th century manor house that I have been working on for the last two years; as well remotely decorating houses in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and London.

With over 20 years’ experience in interior design and property renovation, Lucy lives in Cornwall, working from her design studio and shop, based in Rock. www.lucyorr.co.uk 77
