Foreword By Lorraine Candy

As a child all my summer holidays were spent in a white VW Kombi van on the campsite overlooking Polzeath (Hayle Bay), where we enjoyed magical days in the sea or wandering barefoot to and from the small beach front village.

Personally I am delighted that ever more visitors are discovering the joy of this part of the country, I welcome their financial and emotional investment. And I have watched with happiness as the local community has modernised and become more welcoming, adapting to the ebb and flow of tourism and offering an endless supply of new activities and culinary delights.

We often climbed Brea Hill at Daymer Bay, stopping at the top to gaze at St Enodoc Church and across the estuary to the then, quiet harbour of Padstow. Twenty one years ago I got married at St Enodoc and nowadays my four children aged 10 to 18, wander barefoot to the beach from our house, which overlooks the Tristram Cliff campsite where I spent my childhood breaks.

I also enjoy the new emerging camaraderie of helping local groups and businesses keep our beaches clean and environmentally protected. It feels like those who live here and those who visit are finally all pulling together.

My heart belongs in Cornwall, mostly North Cornwall but I save a bit for South East Cornwall because I grew up in Liskeard where my family live. This is my home county and despite leaving it at 16 to start my magazine and newspaper career in London it always pulls me back. We rarely go abroad on holiday and have introduced our little part of Cornwall to many friends and colleagues all of whom care for it in the addictive way we do.

In the past year Covid has kept us away from our beloved home from home, but it’s made us think about the future with clarity and I suspect our future lies here. As a journalist I’ve been lucky enough to travel to every continent in the world but nothing beats Cornwall for me. I am looking forward to holding my grandchildren’s hands as they too wander barefoot along the same paths I did as a child.

Cornwall has so much more to offer now: be it walking the well kept coastal paths, discovering secret coves or simply sitting on miles of unspoilt beach. I am a keen open water swimmer and spend much time in the sea with my local friends.

ou’ll need to turn the clock back five decades for the beginning of this story. As local postmaster and postman, John Bray was a trusted keyholder for a number of local properties. A familiar face around Rock, John subsequently set up a holiday letting business that expanded into an estate agency and the rest, as they say, is history. The excellent customer service that was the cornerstone of its inception in 1971, remains at the heart of the business today. The original holiday letting arm has recently separated from the estate agency; in an ever-changing market, it was time to pass this on to the next custodian. Now under the wider Sykes umbrella, John Bray Cornish Holidays is benefitting from a powerful, national booking platform while maintaining the same service, faces and local expertise at its offices in Rock and Port Isaac.

As of 2019, John Bray and Partners Estate Agents LLP is now owned by Josephine Ashby and Alex Roads, with Alex heading up the formal RICS valuations for the company. Jo, as Managing Partner, runs the agency day-to-day and explains that their core market is: “Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac. However, as a client and marketled agency, we are moving further afield. This last year has seen us complete on properties on the South Coast, in Seaton and Fowey, as well as stretching along the North Coast to Boscastle, Trebarwith, Perranporth and Pentire Head. With huge demand for the wonderful beaches in North Cornwall we find ourselves being drawn further afield. The Seven Bays are in high demand with their abundance of coastal properties with beach access, all within easy reach of Newquay airport – and because of this we find ourselves growing organically into these other areas.” North Cornwall is a vast natural playground. With its combination of stunning beaches, scenic coastal paths and superior golf courses, the team at John Bray are in no doubt that they are very lucky to be at the heart of this. Jo continues: “It’s because we live here ourselves that we understand why people really want to come here; we are finding that many more owners are looking to relocate. Particularly now with the pandemic, people are spending more time, if not full time, here in Cornwall.” Despite being a holiday destination, the area maintains a vibrant community, particularly noticeable during the recent lockdowns, with everybody pulling together. Community volunteer groups were quickly set up to help elderly residents or those who were shielding, contacting everyone in the two parishes, and really proving that North Cornwall is a very nurturing place to live. Being a part of this for so many decades, it’s always been important for John Bray and Partners to play an active part in its community whether that be through charity donations or working closely with other local businesses. Celebrating 50 years of success in a year when the world has been turned on its head has had its challenges but also many rewards. Marketing & Operations Manager, Shireen Cunliffe comments: “During the first lockdown when it first went quiet, there was an eerie silence, with

no-one knowing what was about to happen. In fact, it became an incredible opportunity for us to showcase the North Coast to the rest of the UK. By adopting video viewings, we found we could show properties when nothing else was moving and our area began to grow shoots of life again. Once restrictions were lifted, it was just like lighting a touch paper, and it has just gone and gone… it’s been exhilarating!”

Pandemic-times have meant that John Bray and Partners has had to be adaptable and agile in order to prepare the ground for the next 50 years. Technology has been so important to the team, particularly when it comes to communication as buyers are messaging via multiple channels, whether that be email, text, WhatsApp, Instagram, Zoom and virtual viewings / video tours are here to stay. “As a company we were particularly strict about adhering to lockdown rules, using all the tools available to us to keep both buyers and our community safe,” affirms Shireen.

“There is no doubt that the focus for buyers wanting to secure their piece of North Cornwall is phenomenal. Despite media statements that there is a shortage of properties, we are getting a steady flow of new instructions, stock is coming, do not despair! But our message to buyers is very clear; be swift, be focused, be prepared… and of course be ready to compromise. When properties in an area are so sought after, there always has to be some flexibility in expectations.”

“As a result,” explains Jo, “pre-qualification has never been better. You now know who your buyer is, whether they’ve got the funds, what the timings are, and all of this is done in advance – and it’s acceptable to do that now. Previously, it would have felt massively intrusive to ask what we ask now in advance. Covid has reshaped the format of how estate agencies work, and this will never change.”

Looking to the future for John Bray and Partners, the message is one of nimble efficiency. 2020 was an exciting year despite everything and for 2021 and beyond, marketled, organic growth will be the agency’s direction: “Our buyer base has really grown. We now have even more people actively looking, with a significant volume of our instructions selling off-market, demonstrating the seriousness of the active buyer database we hold. That’s a sign of a strong market, when you’re able to pair your buyers with sellers. The pandemic has generated a lot of new interest, especially for those that have always loved North Cornwall, but haven’t necessarily thought so seriously about relocating. Remote working as a norm has made this much more achievable, and when you can’t travel anywhere else, Cornwall feels like it has become the hub of the universe.”

While there is a premium being paid and prices have seen an uplift, Jo says that this shouldn’t perturb buyers. “Yes, it’s pretty buoyant at the moment, but that is also encouraging people who are considering selling, to sell. So, there is movement to the market, there are houses coming on. I believe the market is certainly going to settle; as Europe opens up, it will naturally do so. The market tends to move in steps, so we need to keep our feet on the ground.

“It is time spent talking to people so that everyone understands what’s happening. It’s not about us, it’s about investing time for the benefit of our clients. The last 50 years has given us the experience, we know we’re just a part of the process. We just love this part of Cornwall, and we understand what people want to achieve here because we want that too,” finishes Jo. For this niche estate agency, relationships and relationship building remains at the very core of what it offers. In a competitive location, the team at John Bray knows that it cannot rest on its laurels and must continue to adapt in a rapidly changing landscape, meeting the demands of both the pandemic and the developing nature of the market, while delivering the best service possible for every single client.

OF THE SEA After a fallow year, the Port Isaac Shanty Festival is set to return for a splendid weekend of music and merriment

he inaugural Port Isaac Shanty Festival took place in 2019, blessed with a weekend of perfect weather. What began as the small seed of an idea for a fundraising event in aid of Port Isaac Village Hall, evolved into a full weekend of music and shanties. Fundraiser and organiser, Dee Littlechild explains what’s in store for this year’s festival and how the funds are being spent. “As a committee, we had talked about building an extension to our village hall for years, and in 2019 we decided it was going to be our big fundraising year. We did lots of fundraising, culminating in the charity festival and successfully raised over £70k. The village hall is a very important community hub for Port Isaac, as it’s the only public space we have in the village, and we are delighted that we were able to have our extension built during lockdown.”

Voices will ring and out and songs will be sung at the opening event on the evening of September 17th and then from 11am-11pm from 18th-19th September. Entry is free but everyone is encouraged to donate to one of the collection buckets to show their appreciation or can take home a memento of the festival in the form of some festival merchandise. All the money raised this year will go towards a new roof for the village hall.

Sadly, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the event was cancelled in 2020 and Dee and the committee were concerned about how they could enable an event for 2021. Port Isaac’s narrow streets and small cafés are not ideal for social distancing measures and so they had to think outside the box. “We were unsure of what to,” says Dee. ‘We had the idea of liaising with the carnival, who always holds its event on the playing field. We were delighted when they agreed to have the carnival the weekend before our Shanty Festival so that we could make use of their large marquee for our event.”

olzeath Together is a community campaign with the aim of promoting the respectful enjoyment of Polzeath Beach, maintaining a safe and enjoyable place for all to enjoy. For those that know and love Polzeath and its beautiful beach, or if you are visiting for the first time, the campaign suggests adopting a code of practice that will protect the beach and its precious natural environment. First on the agenda is to leave nothing but your footprints, taking home your litter or disposing in nearby bins. Secondly, is to respect both the natural and built environment surrounding the beach, treating it as if it were your own. Thirdly, and important not only for safety and the habitat of the indigenous wildlife, is to BBQ safely in a contained

way and to avoid beach fires which can get out of control. And finally…after you have watched the sunset, return home to only the noise of the ocean so all can get a good night’s sleep. INTO THE BLUE

With the rise in popularity of wild swimming, a new book on the subject will ensure you get your dose of vitamin-sea

riends Bethany Allen, Max Campbell and Lydia Paleschi have a common bond. All have experienced the mental health benefits of cold water swimming and how it has brought them closer to nature. After launching a website in 2020 in order to share their adventures and advocate these well-being benefits, the trio also wanted to share the best and safest places for stepping into the blue. They have spent the last year researching, photographing and writing a new book on the subject, A Guide to Wild Swimming in Cornwall, that covers over 50 locations across the Duchy.

Each location in the book has been carefully selected and includes hidden coves, rocky harbours and tranquil tidal pools, alongside spring-fed quarries and woodland rivers. Every page is accompanied by stunning imagery, showcasing nature at its best. There is also a very useful introductory section that covers tips and safety knowledge for wild swimmers of all experience levels; whether local or having travelled from further afield. It also provides insight into the aforementioned health benefits of wild swimming and the science currently being conducted into cold water immersion.

Many wild swimming communities have been formed across Cornwall over recent years and north Cornwall offers some incredible expanses of blue water to explore, from sea to estuary. For safety reasons, the most experienced of wild swimmers say you should never swim alone, so joining a group or booking a guided session is advisable. The Cornwall Open Water Leisure Swimmers, or OWLS as they are affectionately known, swim at locations across North Cornwall and welcome new, like-minded people via their Facebook community to join them for regular swims and walks. For a more structured offering, especially if you are new to open water, Cornish Rock Tors based in Port Isaac offers guided group or private one-to-one swims, plus access to open training sessions, covering all levels of ability. Discovering The Point at Polzeath’s journey to becoming one of North Cornwall’s most stylish coastal resorts

olzeath, and its surrounding stretch of coastline is one of Cornwall’s most desirable locations. As renowned for its Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury homes, as it is for its endless golden sands and renowned surf spots, this heady combination has made this area of north Cornwall the destination of choice for the discerning traveller. However, The Point has not always been the coveted coastal escape it is today. Rising from the ashes of the remnants of Roserrow Golf and Country Club, it is the true labour of love of Jeremy and Eva Davies that has created a vibrant holiday and golf hub, all within easy reach of

the beach. Home for Jeremy, Eva and their four children was Henley on Thames and the family also had a spell stateside. Jeremy’s background in finance and Eva’s in marketing and media aligned well with a business venture, but what was it that drew them to this particular part of North Cornwall? “I had always loved holidaying in Cornwall,” explained Jeremy. “My grandfather bought a house overlooking Constantine Bay in 1970, and that was the place we went for childhood holidays every Easter and two weeks in the Summer. I have fond memories of playing golf at Trevose, going round and round the short course. It was and still remains a wonderful family friendly environment. For me it was freedom because in Henley we lived in the middle of nowhere and here I could walk everywhere, to the beach, to play golf, to meet friends. Norway, where Eva is from, so we’ve always had an affinity with the sea.” Jeremy and Eva purchased the remnants of Roserrow Golf and Country Club in 2012 from the administrators and set about creating The Point. “Our dream was to create a family focused environment that was both attractive to holidaymakers and the local community.” Eva further explained “It was a complete leap of faith. Our original intention was never to be actively involved in the dayto-day management but assist with the purchase of the assets. We put a team in place, but sadly the summer of 2012 was an unmitigated disaster! Britain hosting the Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee and rain all summer was not a great combination for Cornwall’s tourist industry, and so we had to change tack and become hands-on.” Despite the early setback, Jeremy knew that they could make The Point a success: “I am a very strong believer in location, location. Wherever we have bought a property, location has been the driver.” Combining this with his own passion for golf, the dream was to create a happy and accessible place for everyone. The Point now incorporates a range of two-bedroom holiday cottages, five-bedroom detached holiday homes as well as seven new contemporary, luxury holiday apartments with architecture and interiors inspired by Scandinavian seaside living, and fantastic views towards the sea, Newlands Island and Pentire Point. “We have been incredibly lucky to have been supported by the homeowners in Roserrow and the local community”. Alongside the accommodation, the continued investment in the golf course means that it now boasts greens considered to be some of the best in the county. Add in tennis courts, a health club, indoor pool, Bear Bar and a restaurant and you can see why the resort is so popular with guests and day visitors alike. They are also lucky enough to have some wonderful art from local artist Jethro

It may sound clichéd but our intention has always been that The Point is inclusive not exclusive. We’re all about our members, customers, visitors and also our staff – many of whom are local and return to us year on year,” adds Jeremy.

Not a couple to rest on their laurels, there are further development and future growth plans for the site. They have recently doubled the size of the terrace to cater for additional al fresco dining and there is also some ecoaccommodation on the horizon. “Although the first three or four years were all about survival, the last three or four years have been about consolidation, while continuing to invest. The business is now on a really solid footing and we are looking for quite ambitious growth and further enhancement of all the facilities across The Point. We are fully booked for this summer and are now taking bookings into the shoulder seasons and looking to a busy year going forward.” Today, The Point is at a place where Jeremy and Eva can take more of a back seat and enjoy the lifestyle that their own home in Constantine Bay offers. They were lucky enough to be able to purchase a plot just yards from Jeremy’s original family home in 2006, with views of the Atlantic Ocean. They then set about building their own holiday house, with no idea it was to become their main home in years to come. Both enjoy sea swimming and continue to do so even

through the winter months. “It’s certainly invigorating and good for the mind, body and soul!” says Eva “We’ve got working cocker spaniels, so we spend a lot of time walking on the cliffs, north towards Mother Ivey’s Bay and south to Porthcothan. We are lucky to hear the ocean when we go to bed and again when we wake up in the morning. We feel amazingly spoiled. Since then, it has invested over £11 million in projects across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly through an extensive programme of grant-awarding. Pre-Covid, Cornwall was already ranked as one of the poorest counties in the UK and so it’s with little surprise that the pandemic hit the Duchy hard. Without the influx of visitors, the tourism and hospitality industry (and its suppliers) were hit particularly hard and many families experienced financial deprivation, having to turn to their community for support.

The community groups we support have demonstrated amazing resilience, innovation, and determination to help their neighbours.” While Cornwall is a fantastic place to live, work and visit, it is easy to forget that it remains one of the poorest counties in England. CCF’s research indicates that community groups will be providing emergency and crisis services long into the future. Tamas continues: “We will draw on our experience of working both with our community groups who are straining every sinew to help people who are struggling and our donors who enthusiastically provide support so that all Cornish people can flourish. The impact of the Covid crisis on the lives of the people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is far from over and our communities still need your support.”

Chief Executive of CCF, Tamas Haydu tells us: “The need for our services has been greater than ever in the pandemic. Those who live in or love Cornwall have risen magnificently to the challenge enabling us to support more than 90,000 people and 170 community groups in 2020 with emergency and crisis funding with grants totalling £1.3 million.

“Over the course of the pandemic, CCF has granted a staggering £262,000 to 16 food banks in Cornwall. We are grateful that we can help food banks with their increased demand, although we are saddened that demand for their services continues to increase.”

Cornwall Community Foundation’s aim is to change people’s lives for the better by developing the strength of local communities. The aim is a Cornwall free of poverty and social isolation. The Foundation looks for non-profit, grassroots organisations and aids them financially by raising funds from individuals and businesses both in and outside of Cornwall.

eorge Stephens, aka Gstee, is an abstract aerial photographer based on Cornwall’s north coast. Predominantly shooting seascapes around the county, its changing seasons and swells offer endless inspiration and a creative flow. Self-taught, Gstee has had an interest in capturing moments on camera for as long as he can remember. This, mixed with an interest in aviation, has allowed him to develop and evolve an abstract style of photography that allows a blend of imagination. Creating conceptual imagery, his images take the viewer on a journey, letting their imagination decipher the subject, and in doing so invite a moment in the present. Gstee’s desire in sharing his emotive images of our oceans, is to evoke respect for our vast, yet fragile environment.

urated by Cornish landscape artist Jethro Jackson, Jackson Gallery shows an everchanging collection of work by both established and emerging artists. The gallery was established in February 2020 to fulfil Jethro’s wish to show the work of the artists and makers he admires most from around the UK. It also means that he can focus solely on painting at his studio in Porthilly, which is the perfect spot for him to concentrate on creating new work and ticking off the long list of commissions and larger personal projects. Jethro explains, “The gallery gives me a chance for me to show the work that I enjoy, alongside my own. We know all of our artists and makers personally and it’s important to us to have a real understanding of their processes. Everything you see in the gallery has a story of how it was made.”

ina’s body of work includes collections of paintings from Sri Lanka, Costa Rica and Hawaii, alongside her ever-growing and evolving Cornwall collection. Abstract, vivid, colourful and energetic, Nina experiments with perspective, colour and style, creating a unique alternative to the classic seascape.

to make it more interesting so that it’s not like looking at a photograph…to make it more surreal in a way.” Nina often has several pieces on the go at once. “It’s sometimes good to take breaks between paintings and work on something different, get some new headspace before you go back. Knowing when it’s finished and when to stop is always the challenge.”

Growing up in Rock, Cornwall, Nina learned to surf in the waters of Polzeath and to paint alongside her creative family. With a studio in Rock, she now lives in Trelights and travels to various surf hotspots around the world for fresh inspiration. Travelling offers a stripped-back period of time where Nina can focus solely on the sea and painting, perfect for capturing the atmosphere of the environment in which she is immersed.

Nina’s paintings evoke feelings of appreciation and admiration, not only for exotic shorelines, but also for the magic of home. They showcase the beauty and comfort that the ocean, whether near or far, can provide to us all. The past year has been a turbulent one for many, but Nina has used this time to focus: “In the first lockdown, I was able to be quiet with myself and my work, and I tried to encourage people to travel within my paintings. I think there is a sense of wanderlust within the pieces, a sense of going somewhere by looking through this window of work.”

Despite the enticement of new landscapes, Nina’s home in Cornwall always calls her back, never failing to surprise her, with its abundance of hidden coves and ever-changing scenery. The natural landscape provides endless inspiration for Nina: “Cornwall is really good for that because the energy is so dramatic.” The process of Nina’s work begins with her drone, which enables her to explore the coastline from above. “Translating photos that you take onto paint is always challenging,” she explains. “You have to have a fine balance. You can play with it and depict it in so many ways. I have such a relationship with colour. The way the yellow might complement the blue or a green works well next to an orange. I’m always looking at the colours next to each other, and how they make each other pop.”

Nina’s next project is a local one, working with Watergate Bay Hotel. She will be creating a collection based on Watergate Bay and its surrounding beaches. The artworks will be displayed in an exhibition, before adorning the hotel walls. This demonstrates how, no matter how far Nina’s travels take her, the Cornish coast will continue to be an influence and hold a special place in her heart and in her artistic imagination. Nina’s work is currently showing at the Jackson Gallery in Rock, with a group exhibition in June at Newquay’s North Coast Asylum and a large solo show to follow at the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives later this August. There will also be the exciting opportunity of seeing Nina’s work en plein air this year, details of which will be announced via her Studio Newsletter. WHITEWATER CONTEMPORARY Spring 2021 has brought the official launch of Whitewater Contemporary, the new and progressive big sister to Whitewater Gallery, Polzeath. Expect striking new talent and stunning new works, on show at one of Cornwall’s loveliest locations

ake a walk through the heart of Polzeath and you will see that the original Whitewater Gallery, with its wide windows and ocean view, is now paired with an adjoining, ‘white cube’ style space. Whitewater Contemporary has been specially designed for the display of large-scale contemporary painting and unique works of sculpture, ceramics and applied art. Its custom fit interior and movable wall system give it the elegance and flexibility of a London gallery, and its ambitions are equally as far reaching. “Whitewater Gallery has become really well known for painting, print and ceramics over the last ten years” says gallery Director Nick Wapshott, “but we felt it was time to scale up our exhibition space to meet the growing expectations of our collectors. Opening Whitewater Contemporary has more than doubled our floorspace, and significantly increased the scale and

diversity of works we can show. That’s great for our artists, and our collectors as well, and has allowed us to put together a wonderful schedule of exhibitions for this year and next. We have a great mix of established gallery artists, and have invited some new and really high-profile artists from across the UK, so we have some surprises planned.” Central to the gallery’s offering is its year-round series of Featured Artist exhibitions, on show in its dedicated solo exhibition space. April opened with an exhibition by award winning artist Luke Knight, followed by much loved scene painter Simeon Stafford from 1st May, while Suki Wapshott, whose landscapes and abstract paintings have become synonymous with Polzeath, are on show in June. British ceramicist Hannah Billingham exhibits at Whitewater for the very first time in July, and August sees a new collection from Port Isaac based artist Caroline Cleave. In September,

master potter Hugh West will present a landmark exhibition celebrating his 50th year in ceramics. “Hugh has been an important artist to us for many years,” says Nick. “We feel really proud to be holding his anniversary exhibition here at Whitewater Contemporary.” Painter Virginia Ray will be October’s Featured Artist, followed by a second show in November from Suki Wapshott, finishing in December with new work by ceramicist and silversmith Rachael Osborne.

Having run Noco, a successful specialist food company based in London, for the last eight years, the pair wanted to celebrate their Cornish roots and realise their dream of opening a restaurant on Cornwall’s fashionable north coast. After a few years of searching for the right location, and testing the water with a series of successful barbecue pop-ups, the pair were eventually able to find the premises they were looking for – a beautiful, Victorian brick-built building in the heart of Boscastle. It feels fitting that the premises were a former crab and lobster shop, as now The Rocket Store offers a burgeoning tapas-style, daily blackboard menu featuring the freshest seafood

from Alex’s family’s boat, alongside locally-reared organic meat from their farm and vegetables grown nearby. The ethos behind The Rocket Store has always been one of shared enjoyment, with long trestle tables inside and out, where diners can enjoy sociable harbourside dining. Butterflied Red Mullet recipe EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Not-stick frying pan Pestle and mortar

INGREDIENTS: Thai red chillies x 8 Long red chillies x 2 Ginger/galangal - 1 inch piece Garlic - 4 cloves Fish sauce - 2 tablespoons Lime juice - 4 whole limes juiced Brown sugar - 2 teaspoons Salt - pinch Lime - cut in 4

Get your fishmonger to butterfly your mullet for you or hit YouTube to learn how to do it yourself! METHOD: 1. Pound all the ingredients in a pestle and mortar, until it has formed a rough paste, add the lime juice, fish sauce and sugar to taste. That’s the dressing done.

2. Heat your pan to smoking hot, season your fish on both sides before adding skin side down to the pan. Cook for 3/4 minutes

pressing the skin down to cook evenly until the flesh turns from pink to white half-way up the fish. Flip the fish, allow to slightly cook out for 10/20 seconds.

3. Plate up. Place fish onto plate skin side up, garnish with the dressing liberally, serve with wedge of lime on the side. Juice to your liking.

The Harbour Brewing Co. is taking the world of craft beer by storm

urn the clock back just a decade and you’ll find that craft beer was in its infancy, with just 100 or so independent breweries in the UK. Fast forward a few years, and the country’s culture began to see a change; a desire for more bespoke, craft-led products across both the food and drink industry, with provenance and taste beginning to bubble to the top over price and mass-production.

So it was that in 2012, Eddie Lofthouse and brewer-friend, Rhys Powell, were sitting in Padstow Harbour enjoying a beer. Eddie was looking for a new challenge so, inspired by their north Cornwall surroundings and “always dreaming of beer”, the next step was inevitable…to set up a brewery. Premises were first on the agenda, but to obtain the water quality that is so essential to the brewing process, an actual harbourside location wasn’t viable. The Harbour Brewing Co. set down its roots in Bodmin, aptly equidistant from Cornwall’s north and south coast harbours. Neither could have imagined what was ahead, but a shared passion and determination saw the first brews reach the shelves later that year. A wildcard entry of their first Classic IPA into Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt caused a stir amongst the brewing world and resulted in a win. A successful year on the shelves of a leading supermarket saw the team consolidate its position as Cornwall’s, and indeed one of the UK’s, most innovative brewers. It is very soft water and this lends itself perfectly to lagers and pilsners.” Maintaining a traditional method of making the beer, the process takes three to four weeks in order for flavours to marry and the taste to be just right. t would make sense for an interior designer to love art, and Nicola O’Mara is no exception. A passion for design led to a degree in textiles and a first foray into the world of work as the interiors arm of a construction company. Fascinated by colour, fabric and form, Nicola’s natural aptitude for interiors saw her buy the company, creating a hugely successful showroom and studio in Bristol.

“This means that I can tweak the interiors to suit each client and their individual needs. Whereas a developer will be concerned with getting the house built, I dig deeper into the family’s lives, forming a close working relationship with them. I’ll ask how are they going to use it, how will certain areas function, where will they eat, where will they sleep? Even down to details such as where are they going to wash the dog! It’s a lot about ergonomics and the intimate relationship a family has with a home.”

The lure of the sea, however, was too much. A desire for a lifestyle change saw Nicola and her family take the leap of faith to move to Cornwall: “We just thought, we want to be in Cornwall, we love Cornwall.” Holidays in Rock and Port Isaac as a child drew Nicola to the north coast and a renovation project of her own, Albany in Port Isaac was the first Cornish property to receive the O’Mara magic touch. Self-confessed as not having a signature style, Nicola prefers to be guided by the client and the property itself, whether that be its location or architecture. “Every client and property is unique,” says Nicola, “it might be that it’s an investment property and therefore essential that the design helps to maximise rental returns. Alternatively, I could be working on a ‘forever home’ and then the client will have their own thoughts and ideas. It could even be a combination of the two, requiring an interior that functions for both uses – it’s all about balance.” For Nicola, interior design is both a consultative and iterative process: “I begin with a long meeting with the client, getting to know them, and finding out what’s important to them for their property. I’ll then create initial mood boards and, if the client isn’t local to the area, we can easily work remotely. It’s very much about working from the ground up, getting involved at the architect stage if possible, having that all-important input into the initial layouts of the property.

Nicola’s passion for textures and natural materials is evident in her designs, creating interiors with a timeless elegance: “I love layers upon layers of different textures. For example, if there is an old stone wall in a property, let’s embrace that by exposing it and putting some lovely linens next to it so that it’s really organic.” To achieve such rich designs, Nicola sources a lot of her pieces from Scandinavia, Belgium, Denmark and Spain. This allows her the breadth of choice and style that is needed when working across a wide gamut of luxury properties. “I do source from abroad,” explains Nicola, “but I try and buy pieces that have longevity and will last a lifetime. It’s all about quality rather than a throwaway culture.” Nicola also offers a turnkey service for those who prefer a completely hands-off approach, designing not only the interiors but fitting out the entire property, right down to the details of bedding and kitchenware. Working hand-inhand with her design team, project coordinator and stylist, the results are creative and distinctive designs that are ultimately beautiful. For Matt, the membership: “is a mark of quality and something that sets us apart, giving our clients independent quality assurance.”

Matt’s experience in the construction industry means that his black book of contacts is enviable: “I have great working relationships with many excellent contractors and so am able to call in the right people, at the right time. I am also able to protect the interests of my clients, especially when Cornwall’s north coast can command high prices and competition.” As Matt is both the eyes and ears on the ground for his clients, communication is key. “Every time I visit a site, I take multiple photographs,” explains Matt. “These are then sent back to clients, along with a progress report, and then we undertake a monthly evaluation of work. I find that photographs are the most important thing because it allows clients to see something tangible for their investment.”

Matt concludes: “For some, project management may not be at the forefront of their minds when undertaking a build or renovation. However, especially if a client is trying to manage a build remotely or is busy with their own work and family, employing a construction consultant will remove the headache of trying to balance time, investment, contractors, quality and deadlines; ultimately, allowing the achievement of a dream home with maximum confidence and minimum stress.”

These are all considerations before we even get to the drawing stage.” All of which is essential in the continuing evolution of how we use our kitchens, many of which are now a complete integration into the living area. Rather than be constrained by a particular style, Broad & Turner are customer-led, resulting in a flexibility that spans every facet of kitchen design and layout. Reclaimed timber and stainless steel are as much in-vogue as local stone and even concrete – the choice of materials are endless, as Charlie explains: “It’s fun to break up the design with different materials, colours and textures – this contrast can be really exciting. Under-worktop and cupboard lighting is very important. We work closely with specialist electricians to create some incredible, seamless effects.” Charlie recognises that, alongside visual appeal and being a holistic hub, there also has to be a functional approach. Simple additions such as deep drawers rather than hard-to-access cupboards and swinging arms for kitchen gadgets make clever cookware work even harder. Once a design has been decided, a 3D-CAD drawing brings the space to life, so clients are able to see their kitchen virtually, ahead of the build and installation. Broad & Turner have also recently joined forces with another local company. Finding the perfect partnership with Kernow Fires of Wadebridge, suppliers of quality wood burners and cookers with a service to match, has enabled Broad &Turner to present five of their kitchens in a showroom environment. Do you have a signature look or style? When I undertook my training, I developed a classical approach to my work and I do not impose a signature style. I look at spaces and can visualise their potential – transforming them into interiors that sit harmoniously within the architecture, as well as with the client’s belongings. That said, I am a lover of colour and have a passion for fabrics. I have hundreds of samples from all around the world in my studio and have spent many happy hours with clients there creating beautiful interiors.

Tell us more about your customers and catchment area… I’m based in Rock, Cornwall, but can undertake work anywhere in the UK or overseas. My first house renovation was back in 1998, and since then I have completed a variety of projects, including period renovations, conversions and new builds on differing scales, both commercial and residential.

Why do people come to you? My clients usually come to me by recommendation. Working on any project can be stressful for the clients, whether it’s one room or building a whole house. I love what I do and pride myself on bringing a down-to-earth, happy and positive attitude to any project. The key for any client is that it is an enjoyable process, that I take the stress away and create an interior that they love.

What are you currently working on? There is an exciting range of projects happening at the moment; I have three properties in Rock and Trebetherick which have recently been purchased by clients and need complete redecoration and furnishing; a 16th century manor house that I have been working on for the last two years; as well remotely decorating houses in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and London.
