his year is a special occasion for us as we celebrate our 100th year in business. We’ve come a long way since 1921, when our grandfather John Casey started the

business in the aftermath of the burning of Cork. Now, two generations later, we are proud to continue to offer superb quality

continued support. Our father would always say the two most important things in any business are the staff and the customer and we stand by that to this day. We are very grateful to everyone who has played a part in the success of Caseys over the years. After what has been a rollercoaster of a year, we are cautiously hopeful that life will become a little more normal in the year ahead. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to our stores in Cork and Limerick and of course you can always visit us on Caseys.ie from the comfort of your own home. Thank you,

Caseys Furniture has now been around for a century. John Casey opened his business in 1921 following the burning of Cork. He was determined to provide furniture to the local residents following this tragedy. The business has grown and changed a lot in the past 100 years but the integral philosophy of the business is the same; to provide the best service and products to our customers.

A FAMILY AFFAIR We have been a family run business since the beginning and have had multiple generations working at Caseys. It was only natural that the people working here all became one big family. Jim Casey always believed that the customer and the people that work here are the two most important things in the business and that still remains the same today.

END OF AN ERA Many people have passed through the doors of Caseys over the years. In the late 80s Donal McSweeney and Con O’Shea retired from Caseys after many years of service. Jimmy O’Shea followed in his father’s footsteps and worked in Caseys for over 50 years.

CASEYS LIMERICK OPENS FOR BUSINESS IN 2005 The Caseys Limerick store is a state-of-theart store with an on-site café. This location was chosen as it is ideal for our customers in Limerick, Kerry, Clare and parts of Cork. This store was a great step forward for Caseys and has been very influential for us as a business. We can now cater to more customers in person than before.

100 YEARS & BEYOND During the pandemic, the team adapted to the changing retail landscape. Now that we are emerging from the pandemic, the business is looking forward to the new normal, and greeting customers in person again. As the world changes and consumer habits evolve, businesses need to change too. With social media playing such an important role in interior trends, it makes sense that Caseys is evolving onto these platforms more and more.

SPEAKING WITH JIMMY...

SPEAKING WITH WILLIAM...

W H AT Y E AR D ID YOU STA RT WO RK IN G I N CAS EY S ? T E LL US A B OU T H OW YOU EN D ED U P WO RK IN G T H E RE .

W HAT YE A R DI D YOU STA RT WORKING I N CASE YS? TE LL US A BOUT HOW YOU E N DE D UP WORK I N G THE RE .

I started working in Caseys in 1966. My father had been working in Caseys for many years. I became his apprentice in the store and trained with him. Back then we had to fill out time sheets and I wrote in ‘working with dad’ for my shifts.

I started working in Caseys almost 52 years ago now. My nextdoor neighbour had been working in Caseys for the summers and couldn’t do it anymore so his mother recommended me to Jim Casey for the summer job. I did 3 consecutive Summers after that before sitting my leaving cert.

W H AT MAKE S CAS E Y S S O S PE C IA L IN YOU R O P I N ION ? I think the fact that Caseys is a family business and has seen multiple generations come through the shop gives it a unique feel. Caseys always feels like a family and I think that helps staff but also the customers notice it.

CAN YOU TELL US A B OU T S OM E O F T HE MO R E D I F F I C U LT T IM E S , T H E B US IN E SS H AS S U R VIVE D S OM E C H A LLE N G E S OVER TH E PAST 1 00 Y E A RS ? The very high interest and mortgage time in the 80’s was a very difficult time. Tough to get a sale at times and every sale mattered. Unemployment was very bad in Ireland, I was delighted to have my job in Caseys. The troubles in Northern Ireland had major effects on business as well. Ireland was an uncomfortable place to be at the time.

W H AT D O YOU H O P E FOR TH E F U TU R E O F CAS EY S ? I hope that Caseys keeps its identity because it is becoming more and more unique for there to be a family business still run by the family.

YOU HAV E G IV E N OV E R 50 YE A RS OF SE RVI CE TO CASE YS, WHAT K E PT YOU THE RE A LL THOSE YE A RS? I felt very at home at Caseys! I was a quiet individual, but it gave me confidence. I knew everyone at Caseys and everyone knew me.

W HAT I S YOUR M OST M E M OR A BL E M OM E N T FROM YOUR TI M E WORKING I N CASE YS? I have a lot of great memories from Caseys but unfortunately my most prominent memory in Caseys is when I forgot to lock one door in the evening and as a result, we had some furniture taken that night. The furniture was later returned undamaged.

W HAT I S YOUR PROUDE ST ACHI EV E M E N T FROM YOUR TI M E IN CASE YS? I was able to buy my first house while working in Caseys which was a moment of great pride for me. My proudest Caseys moment was the Irish Goods Council display (all Irish furniture). I was heavily involved in the organisation of the event and got public recognition from Jim Casey for my hard work.

100 YEARS O F H E R I TA G E

To celebrate the anniversary, Caseys replicated old photos of their original furniture delivery vehicle - a horse and cart on Oliver Plunkett St Cork. It featured Jimmy O’Shea (right) who began working as an apprentice with his father Con O’Shea over 50 years ago in Caseys. His father Con was pictured in the original 1940’s photo (left). Jimmy was joined on the horse and cart by Peter and David Casey, whose grandfather John Casey, founder of Caseys, is pictured here in the 1920’s outside his store. Another loyal member of their team, William Scannell, who started with the business 52 years ago at the age of 14, also came along for the special anniversary. He said he was recommended to Jim Casey for the job by his neighbour. Commenting on his lifelong service to the business, William said:

“The customer was always the number one priority. I served generations of families at one time. You don’t get those repeat generational customers without exceptional service.”

As soon as I saw this suite of furniture in Caseys Cork I loved it, I left the shop and rang my husband to tell him how gorgeous it was! I got the ok to put down the deposit (we had a young family so it was a big decision). That was 1994/95 and we are still using it every day, the cushions wash really well. You certainly get what you pay for with Caseys. I have bought several items since then, most recently, I bought garden furniture last year. I have never (ever) been disappointed. I still get excited when I see the Caseys delivery van on the road wondering what’s inside.

THE FUTURE

OF CASEYS Our 100th anniversary has given us a chance to reflect on the planet-friendly changes we have made, and would like to make in the coming years. We have been focusing on our goals for the future with a number of stepping stones to become more sustainable in mind. Such as, reducing our paper consumption and making our stores more energy efficient.

SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE

Caseys are dedicated to the production of furniture of the highest quality while keeping sustainability at the forefront. We buy from suppliers who work closely with the Trees4Trees foundation when producing their furniture. Trees4Trees are a nonprofit tree planting foundation. Their ethos and mission is simple; source sustainable timber and for every tree that is used in making furniture, two more are planted.
