MALIBU STEAK & SEAFOOD: Where Fun Meets Sophistication in Pearland By Rhonda Meredith Malibu Steak & Seafood is located at 6425 Broadway St., right in the heart of Pearland. Since opening in October, 2014, the 12,000 squarefoot restaurant has received rave reviews for its atmosphere, décor, and outstanding menu choices. A special occasion is not needed to visit the area’s newest casual fine dining concept. “We want to be different and not pretentious,” said Sina Taheri, the Director of Operations. “We want people to feel comfortable coming to our restaurant and not feel like they have to be super dressed up. Malibu is a neighborhood restaurant, and we believe fine dining is when everyone is happy.” Malibu opens for lunch Mondays through Saturdays at 11 a.m. The entrees range from $9 to $18 for a scrumptious meal. Gina Wooderson, the owner of Gina’s Mobile Pet Grooming in Pearland, says this about her dining experience, “Great service, food, atmosphere, and conversation with my girls!” Wooderson ordered the Cowboy Steak cooked medium rare with shrimp added, and the Arugula salad. “Delicious!” she said. Wooderson’s friend and patron Ashley Hernandez adds, “I had the prime rib French dip with the Malibu fries and it was so great!” The lunch and dinner menus offer fresh fish flown in daily, Kobe steaks, certified Angus beef plus a host of signature entrees, all at “a more competitive price than offered elsewhere.” Other options include the oyster bar, a host of soups and salads and the patio/bar menu with tasty tapas developed for those just wanting to hang out in the visually-appealing bar/lounge area or the tropical-themed patio shaded by palm trees and palapa umbrellas.

Inside Malibu is a casual upscale setting. The primary dining room is sunken in the center of the building with inviting booths and tables that surround a massive, white brick-enclosed fire place in the middle of the venue. There is a great view of the open-concept, stainless-steel shielded kitchen to watch the chef and his culinary staff at work. Malibu Steak & Seafood is the perfect venue to host your event. at Skallywag Suds N Grub 600 6th Street in Kemah What’s your Background/Experience: Chef Garza has twelve years in the culinary world holding varied positions from being a line cook to a Sous chef in restaurants from Orlando Florida all the way up to the Texas coastal area. “I have done it all. From small mom and pop restaurants to four star resorts such as Shingle Creek Golf Resort which holds 1,500 rooms and has 250,000 square foot of banquet space,” said Garza. He feels at home in the kitchen at Skallywag. What is your specialty? The amicable chef says he has more than seven years experience specializing in Italian Cuisine, but I've dabbled in quite a few styles off and on. Signature Dish: “Skallywag's Jo Mama buffalo burger is hands down the best dish on our menu. The homemade bacon marmalade, cumin pickled onions, braised pork belly, diced jalapeños, and peanut butter on a pretzel bun is delicious! You can't go wrong!” As far as his personal signature dish goes, Chef Garza says everyone always asks him that. “I always reply that I don't have one particular dish that I would call one that. I just enjoy cooking at put my love into every dish I make.” Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? I have assisted in cooking for several NFL players, and once for Chef Robert Irvine under my Executive Chef at the time, Chef Dan Nester. Nester is one of my main mentors, and is well known in the culinary world in Orlando Florida.

Friendswoods’ 5th Annual Art in the Park Festival: November 8 & 9 The Friendswood Fine Arts Nonprofit and the City of Friendswood present the 5th annual Art in the Park Festival, November 8th from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and November 9th from 11:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. at Stevenson Park located at 1100 Friendswood Dr.

This event features 2 days of art and music, free activities for the kids, a “Man Cave” complete with live football broadcasting both days, along with artist demonstrations including muralist Ana Marietta, performances by Rachel Ash Aerial, and The Walking Tree of Life. 2014 UHCL Faculty Exhibition Starts November 14 The University of Houston Clear Lake Faculty Exhibition will be at the UHCL Art Gallery from November 14 thru January 8, 2015. This exhibit provides a wonderful opportunity for the campus community and beyond to see firsthand the talents of the UHCL art professors. The exhibition showcases a variety of themes made in a flurry of media, with each instructor representing the disciplines they teach. Included in the show are four current full-time art and design instructors, Sandra Hu with painting and printmaking, Stuart Larson with digital media, Matthew Linton with photography and Jason Makepeace with sculpture, as well as recent retiree Nick J. de Vries with ceramics. A Preview Party is November 13, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is sponsored by Saint Arnold Brewing Company. This event gives the art enthusiast the first chance to see the works on display with refreshments and adult beverages (21 & up). The exhibit will also offer a Brown Bag Series at noon to get close and hear about each faculty member’s work directly from them in a casual environment. Everyone is to bring their own lunch and the faculty will provide sodas. November 17 is Jason Makepeace, November 19 is Matthew Linton, November 24 is Stuart Larson, December 2 is Nick deVries and December 4 is Sandra Hu. COURAGEOUS COLOR

Featured Artist: Rene' Palmer Armstrong

By Kelley Dawson Since her early childhood, local artist Rene' Palmer Armstrong remained resolute in her pursuit to realize her imagination. Armstrong’s urge to create was never stifled even though her parents wouldn’t allow her to study art. “I always loved art” she said. Often Armstrong made the toys her family could not afford out of cardboard or other found materials. She told, “I’d cut out and draw [a horse], put it together on a stick and ride it.” Armstrong also made intricate cardboard cars. In 1974, Armstrong’s husband asked her what she wanted for Christmas. Her response was a wooden Indian and art classes. She received both. Armstrong took ten oil painting classes and said she enjoyed every bit of it. Armstrong was also working with stained glass and later owned a successful shop appropriately named Slippery When Wet. However, with the tedious steps of adopting a foreign child and career circumstances, she took a break from her art until retirement. Then, Armstrong began experimenting with dichroic glass which was developed in the 1960’s by the aerospace program to better handle heat. According to Armstrong, the glass absorbs and reflects light thus staying cool to the touch. The two-colored glass looks as if it’s on fire. She stated, “It’s a living piece of art work. As the light changes, the glass does to.” Armstrong said she loves the glass so much that she makes it the focal point of her works by placing it in a shadow box canvas frame. She explained that she cuts, designs, and fuses the glass. Next, she interprets what she sees in the glass and adds acrylic accents to the canvas. Armstrong said, “It gives some movement to draw attention to the glass.” Armstrong wishes she could trademark all the reactions she’s heard regarding her works. She said most everyone expresses, “I’ve never seen anything like that.” Armstrong told her art has evolved from more traditional to abstract. She said, “I’m having the time of my life. It’s so freeing.” Armstrong disclosed that often the unique colors of the glass change in the kiln. She admitted, “The mistake can be better than the original plan.” Armstrong’s creative courage pushed her as she battled and defeated cancer twice- in 1996 and 2001. She told, “Cancer propels me to do what I do today. For me it’s a state of mind, a purpose.” Currently diagnosed with a brain tumor, Armstrong shared she is awaiting final test results, but again “won’t be slowed down.” She added, “With faith, family, and friends you can tackle anything.” She said she also finds her art very therapeutic. Her smaller art pieces start at $35. Armstrong wants her art to be affordable for all to appreciate. She said, “I enjoy making and seeing people excited about art.” Armstrong takes her art literally as well. She has authored two books. Wings and Ring is based on hundreds of love letters found in a junk store from a WWII pilot to his sweetheart in Houston. Armstrong’s second book, Gwendolyn, is a charming children’s book about a curious tree frog. The 41st annual event, produced by Galveston Historical Foundation, will feature influences from the colonies of Great Britain during the time of Charles Dickens. This year’s festival begins Friday, December 5 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continues Saturday, December 6, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, December 7, from 12 to 6 p.m. Tickets purchased before December 5 are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 7-12 for Saturday and Sunday. Dinner With Dickens at the 1880 Garten Verein: It’s a renewed take on a Dickens classic as the annual dinner returns to the breathtaking German dancing pavilion. Held for one night only on Friday, December 5, 6 p.m., “Dinner with Dickens” will treat guests to an evening of specially crafted food, grand storytelling and royal company as the festival’s Queen Victoria makes her annual entrance. Returning to the breathtaking 1880 Garten Verein, it’s a holiday dinner not to be missed! Tickets are $80 per person and reservations are required.

“It’s exciting for us to offer a new twist to the annual Dickens event,” states GHF Executive Director, Dwayne Jones. “This year we bring back some old favorites for those who come annually but we are adding a distinctive historical theme that will add new attractions and cultural experiences.” The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on six stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items. Two descendants of Charles Dickens will once again grace the festival as GHF welcomes Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, greatgreat-great-granddaughter of Dickens, and Jane Monk, great-greatgranddaughter. Both women will be at numerous events throughout the weekend. Lucinda will be promoting her new book “Moustaches, Whiskers & Beards” at the festival. "I'm so looking forward to returning to Galveston and Dickens on the Strand this December,” says Lucinda Dickens Hawksley. “The festival has become a highlight of the Dickensian calendar and this year promises to be better than ever, with lots of exciting new ideas. My cousin Jane Dickens Monk and I have already got our corsets ready, so I hope you'll come and join us!"

The 53rd Anniversary Christmas Boat Lane Parade will be Saturday, December 13 from 6 to 9 p.m on Clear Lake and through the Kemah Channel. Ring in the holidays with this Clear Lake tradition. Last month the 2014 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition awarded 268 medals to some of the best commercial breweries in the United States. A record 14 Texas breweries were awarded sixteen medals (last year, Texas brought home ten medals), including six golds. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and a symbol of brewing excellence. In its 28th year, the 2014 competition surpassed all previous participation records both nation-wide and from the Lone star State. A total of 44 Texas breweries had booths at the festival and Texas finished as the fourth most decorated state by total medal count this year, only coming behind California, Colorado and Oregon, respectively. This statistic represents a continued shift in upward momentum as Texas was the sixth most decorated state in 2013, and the eighth most decorated state in 2012.

Regarded as the Super Bowl of Beer, the Great American Beer Festival offers a chance for brewers to showcase their stuff at the nation’s largest tasting competition. where else? How about one of the few places out on The SCENE large enough for *everybody,* which, of course, would be Jackie’s Brickhouse. The menu at Jackie’s has gotten crazy good as I’ve noticed steady growth in the weeknight dinner crowd. The band I was interested in seeing that evening was Slide Effect, a group I hadn’t caught in quite some time and a bunch I’m quite fond of. The night was rocking with the kit and bass holding down the fort and Pat Beadles on harp, was connected well with the cosmos that evening. However, what I was curious about was catching Bennie Brasket sharing guitar duties with Lynn Raggio. This duo, in my mind, has the possibilities similar to Joe Walsh playing along with Don Felder and not many bands locally can boast of such a strong guitar paring (The Navigators and Cold Feet are two local bands that do come to mind though). I’m not sure if I’ll get to hear a local live rendition of a Hotel California outro The Line Up @ soon but T-bone Tom’s the possibilities with this duo exist and it would be a good set to catch….

COLLEGE OF THE MAINLAND – Folks, you should try to make it down to catch Sparky Koerner’s Jazz Ensemble & Jazz . These are seriously good shows, offered free to the public and are played in perhaps the finest sounding rooms in the area. Many musicians have been through Sparky’s curriculum which includes some of the snazziest jazz your ears will ever enjoy. What I like about this style of music are the crisp stops, Sparky Koerner’s Jazz Ensemble sharp @ College Of breaks, The Mainland and nifty progressions the entire band pulls off song after song after song. In the unifying forces of music department, I’ve a hunch we will someday see a few of the areas young industrial metal rock musicians trying out jazz which makes sense as the music form stimulates the brightest of minds, has survived the test of time, and would be simply cool to see pan out. Now, back to the show…

TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE – This month, we took in two shows, Fly Leaf and Flock of Seagulls (at Scout Bar, of course). We’ve seen both before on The SCENE and follow-ups were in order. First, the band from Flyleaf @ Temple, Texas: Since the Scout Bar last time we saw them, their lead singer had quit the band yet here they were on their Between the Stars tour promoting their fourth album and first with their new label, Loud & Proud Records. With over 2.7 million Facebook likes and a nationwide tour, this band is clearly clicking big. We were mostly interested in checking out Kristen May (the band’s new lead vocalist) and weren’t the only ones as we bumped into and chatted with her parents and uncle who came all the way from Temple for the show. High flying energetic show: check, check, check! Connection with the crowd, check! The band having fun on stage, check! Fly Leaf – Good to go! The last time we caught Flock of Seagulls was at Cullen's, the band backing up frontman Mike Score was incredibly crisp, but it was hard to connect with Mike that evening years ago. It seemed as though Mike was hiding under his baseball cap the entire night. This time around at Scout Bar and at peace with his new hairstyle, it was a much more relaxed! Mike Score on stage chatting it up with the all-age Scout Bar audience and comfortable being the seasoned rock musician he happens to be. "I Ran" and "Space Age Love Song " were as catchy this evening as they were 30 years ago. PerFlock of haps better Seagulls would have @ Scout been for the Bar song to play out longer but then, music of the ’80s was rarely constructed with long lead breaks that we tend to like. Nonetheless, the show was satisfying! Onward…

OVER THE TOP – For five years, we’ve been following this allvolunteer collective of local musicians from across the Greater Houston metroplex. Each year, they come together to recreate renditions of Classic Rock albums from the ’60s. Having already accomplished Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pet Sounds, and Abbey Road “it made some sense” as the groups leader, David Blassingame, puts it, for this year to go with “Revolver,” the seventh Beatles Album and Number 3 on the updated Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2012 Updated List) – Not too shabby, eh? If this alone weren’t enough, the show marked the 50th anniversary of the Beatles making their live appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, which good people, was one of the most widely viewed television events in history. The group claims a legitimate reason to rename itself to the Fab 56 with a larger-than-ever orchestra section this year filling the stage at Discovery Green. Also filled this year was the viewing lawn which speaks of the following this group has built over the years. Individually, the members of this group possess considerable talent, each enough to front their own performing band, and each year, Fab 56 @ are able to get it Discovery together by Green coming together for the BIG show. Congrats to the band for a job well done!

AUTUMN – Is finally here and not a moment too soon. We caught lots of good outdoor live music in October at the Third Annual Seabrook Festival of the Arts where The Myrna Sanders Band sounded fantastic on the open-air stage on perhaps the nicest weekend for the month. Myrna passed along that she’s gotten the song writing bug and been creating lots of new content so we’ll stay tuned in. A nice addition to this year’s festival was the performance by Farpoint Theatre, a local troop of young talented actors performing a takeoff on Firefly – Myrna Sanders Band what a nice way to @ Seabrook Festival spend the day. T-Bone of the Arts Tom’s was packed as usual for the weekend dinner crowds this month and brought in The Lineup from Galveston for an interesting night of variety of postdinner cover dancing. Shack scored well as the place to enjoy an outdoor meal and drinks, intelligent conversation with friends and pleasing sounds hosting the Blue Moon duet of Doyle & Bradshaw on Blue Moon duet @ Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack the Swamp Shack stage. The full Blue Moon Band reports a lineup which should be definitely a dandy. Further into the Lighthouse District, we caught Laura Mager’s new cover project, Risky Business at Zone 504. Looking forward to hearing more of this group in the months ahead as they settle into their groove. Down in Bacliff, the music-friendly setting Bob and Katie have going is clearly Risky Business @ Zone 504 taking root with appreciative music lovers taking in the finest of R&B brought to these parts. Chasin’ Tails Sports Bar & Cajun Cuisine Chasin’ Tails, located at 2402 Bay Area Blvd. (at Space Center Blvd.), is a family- and bikerfriendly restaurant. Its New Orleans-style décor is inviting, and the energetic atmosphere is screaming for a good time. Their food is made from scratch with a real taste of Louisiana. The menu is a combination of American fare and international recipes. Specialties include catfish, chicken, gumbo, etouffe, and Italian grilled cheese (dipped in marinara). Some of the family recipes date back 100 years. The Thursday dinner special coincides with live music from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which is cool. What could be better? How about breakfast? Starting November 14, Chasin’ Tails will be launching breakfast on Fridays through Sundays starting at 6:30 to 11 a.m. Until then, their hours of operation are 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week. FEATURED UPCOMING SHOWS TO CATCH By Rhonda Meredith With the hustle and the bustle of the holidays, it is easy to forego taking some quality time for yourself by relaxing or relieving some stress to some of the best musical acts performing in the Bay Area. But what to see? The SCENE Magazine is full of dates for shows you don’t want to miss. So mark those calendars, and grab your friends and check out some of these shows. Catch the Mighty Orq on Saturday, November 8, at Katie's Bar in Bacliff. The Mighty Orq is a rock band in a generic sense. Their real sound is found within the nuances of their original songs… It’s a little bluesy with seductive guitar riffs, as well as melodic with a Southern tone. Alvin & The Slick Punks will be jamming the roof off at Noah’s Ark on Sunday, November 15. There isn’t really a member named “Alvin” in this three-piece reggae rock band. But they won’t care if you get drunk and call one of them Alvin. Or will they? This band parties hard and plays music even harder. They were honored with a nomination for Best Reggae Band by the Houston Press in 2013. Chad Ware performs at T-Bone Tom’s on Sunday, November 16. Ware, a 2012 Texas Music Awards’ Studio Musician of the Year nominee, says music is means to tell a story and his music for the average everyday person, and can relate to anyone. “My music is influenced by the blues,” Ware says and cites Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top, Tom Petty among his influences along with Vince Gill, Ricky Sk-

aggs and Steve Wariner. He has had the privilege of performing in some of the largest venues around the U.S. Most notably was the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. One-handed guitarist Lefty Williams from Atlanta, GA, whose guitar playing is reminiscent of Jimmy Page, is making a tour stop also at Katie’s Bar on Thursday, November 20. He has been compared to a great lineage of Georgiareared guitarists including Robert Cray and Duane Allman. Although he was born with an incomplete right arm, Williams came up with a pick design that allowed him to play guitar when he was only 6 years old. He is truly a gifted musician. Do not miss this show. In Austin, Texas, a city known for its great guitarists Van Wilks has long been lauded as one of the city’s master players. Declared "a perfect cross between Jimi Hendrix and Van Halen" by the Austin-American Statesman, Van Wilks has toured nationally and internationally with such acts as ZZ Top (whose Billy Gibbons is one of Van’s biggest supporters) and torn the roof off countless venues. The guitar player is also a prostate cancer survivor and awareness advocate. Check out the band at TBone Tom’s on Friday, November 21. Something BIG is going on Friday, November 28. Big Richard is performing at Big Shots! Big Richard is known for their big personality and even bigger sound. They spent to tours overseas entertaining our great United States military in 2012.
