your guide to this years festival

A BIG, LARGE WELCO E!

IMPORTANT INFO

Think green & Keep it clean Leader’s Responsibilities

Those who are identified on bookings as leaders are responsible for their group. Leaders should not allow campers under their care to go off site without their permission and without a specific time by which to report back. Leaders should not go off-site without leaving some other adult responsible for their group and should inform the sub-camp leader of this change. In the case of an emergency we need to be able to contact the leader as soon as possible. 1. please show care and consideration for everyone on site and visiting the showgrounds 2. no smoking is allowed anywhere on the Kings Hall / Balmoral site 3. alcohol must not be brought into or consumed on site 4. no one who is intoxicated will be permitted to either enter the site or remain on the site 5. wristbands must be worn at all times to obtain entrance to all events 6. no mixed sleeping (unless married) 7. tents must be at least 3 metres apart and should not be pitched without permission from the sub-camp leader. 02 • festival 2008

8. do not cook inside tents other than the designated cook tents on site 9. no camp fires or disposable barbeques to be used on the grass. 10. no vehicles on camp site except those required by staff 11. valuables left in tents or cars are left entirely at the owners risk 12. litter must not be left around the site as this causes health and safety problems 13. no pets to be kept on site 14. no ‘pass outs’ for Under 18s except as arranged by leader

Emergency? In case of emergency please contact your subcamp leader or the campsite office. Medical help is on hand 24 hrs a day. If you need help just ask at the St Johns Ambulance tent, the Information Point or any member of staff. Information Point is in the Village. You’ll easily spot this venue when walking through the site – we’ve taken over the offices of the Ulster Farmers Union! Open daily from 10am to 10pm for general enquiries, lost property etc. PLEASE be quiet at night. It you want to stay up late, please respect those who are trying to sleep. Remember that noise carries across a campsite at night, A quiet curfew will be enforced in the camping area from 1.30am onwards. www.summermadness.co.uk

Event Crew Famed the world over – the Summer Madness Event Crew are here to make your stay enjoyable and safe. They work long hours to make your camp a trouble free experience, so go on, give them a smile and let them know they are appreciated. Lost Wrist Bands If you lose your wrist band the cost of a replacement is £5.00. These will only be replaced if verified by your leader (in person) and if ID is presented. No crossing into any area that has been marked out of bounds by red and white tape (this will constitute trespassing, punishable by law).

www.summermadness.co.uk

Summer Madness wishes to make it clear that it does not favour sectarian propaganda or proselytizing within the Christian fellowship and anyone involved in these practices will be escourted off the site. This means that any group or individual which uses the SM Festival and its facilities for such purposes does so against the spirit of the event. The organisers reserve the right to cancel any booking (be it that of any individual or group) that they deem necessary and escort all concerned parties off the premises if these ground rules are not observed. Thank you We would like to thank all those people who have worked tirelessly, financed and resourced us during the year and at the camp to make the event such a success. Thank You!

CIYD / YOUTH LINK NI

CONNECT VENUE Connect offers leaders space to reflect on their youth work practice, relate to other youth workers and be inspired by people engaged with the changing dynamics of youth work in today’s society. Each afternoon will present an opportunity for youth leaders to talk about their own practice at a facilitated youth work surgery. This is a place to ask questions, raise concerns and celebrate good practice.

We are also privileged to have Colin McCartney, the Director of Urban Promise (Canada), share his experience on issues facing youth leaders in a changing, culturally diverse society.

Colin McCartney

CIYD and Youthlink have made it their aim to serve youth leaders through this venue empowering them to become the best they can be. Part of this is to supply a resource package that could be used by anyone involved in youth work.

Recent book by Colin McCartney that is a great read for youth workers. Official release date June 2008 06 • festival 2008

First t hINgs first! Every morning at this year’s Summer Madness we will try to provide some quiet space in the morning for anyone/everyone to connect with God personally through prayer, bible study, etc. It wouldn’t be good for a Christian festival to disrupt your regular pattern of devotional space and connecting with God. So if you wish, you can use this quiet half-hour in whatever way suits you best. Here’s your 3 options at 8.30am Saturday, Sunday and Monday: Octagon quiet open space for personal devotions Sale Ring festival prayer meeting for sharing our prayer concerns together. per Harberton Bible Study (led by Rev Chris Bennett) Up

Phil Collins

established the team he took on responsibility for the ‘year out’ programme and summer missions for YFC, releasing hundreds of young people in ministry.

Pete Greig

Phil Collins is a well-known National Evangelist and Church Leader. Phil has spent 20 years in ministry, travelling as an Evangelist throughout Britain, Canada, USA and Africa, conducting town and citywide missions. He spent many years as the National Evangelist for Youth for Christ where he pioneered ‘Life Force’ teams across Canada and then went on to develop ‘Activate Theatre Company.’ Having 14 • festival 2008

Pete Greig is a British author, church-planter and International Director of 24-7prayer, a Christian charity which has grown in eight years from a single night-and-day prayer room into an international, interdenominational youth movement committed to prayer, mission and justice.

Thanks to an innovative approach to spirituality and culture, 24-7 has captured the attention of newspapers and magazines from Rolling Stone to Readers Digest and was the subject of a British television documentary. Proposed by Relevant Magazine as one of the top fifty ‘Revolutionary Leaders’ of his generation, Greig is a popular speaker and writer whose books have been translated into a number of languages. The idea caught on unexpectedly and became the 24-7 Prayer movement as it is known today. Soon after the conception of 24-7 and a few weeks after the birth of their second child, Samie became seriously ill and nearly died. This event profoundly altered the way they thought about life, prayer and eternity.

www.summermadness.co.uk

MAIN STAGE The story is told in Pete’s books Red Moon Rising and, more particularly, in God on Mute which explores unanswered prayer. They now live in Guildford (just south of London) where Pete is one of the leaders of The Guildford Boiler Room. Samie’s health has now recovered sufficiently for her to be studying for a BA in English Literature and Intecultural Communications at the University of Kingston. Pete is the International Director of the 24-7 Prayer Community.

Andy Hickford

Reggie Dabbs

Andy is the leader of the staff team and senior minister of Maybridge Community Church in West Sussex. Andy was born in Surrey, educated at the London School of theology and was ten years a youth worker in Luton before coming to the church in 1996.

A strong contender for ‘person travelling the furthest to be at SM in 2008’, Reggie joins us from Ft Myers, Florida where he lives with his wife Michele and their son Dominic.

He is married to Cerys and they have three children. We are delighted to have Andy taking our Over 18’s / leaders stream of seminars at SM this year.

Worship Leaders

Reggie is a popular public school speaker in the US and in 2008 he’s one of the main speakers in Dublin’s Urban Soul. He captures the attention and hearts of everyone in the room and reminds us that “You can never change your past, but you can change your future!” We’re thrilled to have persuaded Reggie to take the time to come up to SM this year”.

Steve McCartney M TPT Leader

@ SUMMER MADNESS

… some say they’ve got a “special ability” to know everything about you … or that they can spot a sin at 50m in a crowded ‘After Dark’ venue: others say they can recharge your mobile just by holding it, or that they can sense when the queue for the showers is at its shortest… But, in reality, they’re just everyday randomers in orange T-Shirts with a strong belief in God’s desire to do business with you at Madness this year: you’ll see them all around the place, but a favoured location is in pairs in front of Mainstage at the end of an evening, chewing a mint & waiting – why? God ministers in many ways at Madness, and one of those is ministry through prayer – “mtp”. This is facilitated in a safe and trained way by the Ministry Through Prayer Team: you’ll see “MTPT 08” on our badges & orange tees.

We believe that God blesses all who call on Him, and we also realise that sometimes there’s a need for prayer about something that God has brought to your mind, with someone who will pray and seek God’s guidance with you: those someones make up the MTP Team. A suave, sophisticated and handsome bunch we may seem (pause for laughter…), but spiritual superheroes with everything sorted we are not – we are simply open to being used by God in ministry through prayer for His glory and for your benefit: after all, God is not in the business of harm, but of help; not of blame, but of blessing. So – why not

take a step of reconciliation between yourself & God..? The detailed bits: the MTP Team will be at the front after every Mainstage. We will also be available at the 24/5 prayer venue (daytime) between Mainstage events. We can be recognised by our i.d. badges & wonderful orange tees - accept no substitutes. We will not pressure you, preach at you, or do weird stuff: ‘your name’ &’ what you want prayer for’ is all we ask. We keep confidences (then later forget), unless criminal or abuse issues, suspected or actual, are raised: SM will pass details on to the relevant statutory authorities.

cafe HOME

Scouts & Brownies? He-man & She-ra? Barbie & Action man? What are your favourite childhood memories? For us, there are loads.

But for some, childhood memories aren’t that much fun to look back on. 15 million children around the world have been orphaned because of AIDS. In Uganda alone, one million children have been orphaned. Many are left at home alone, traumatised by their parents’ death, often isolated from the community because of the stigma surrounding HIV, and forced to abandon their education in order to scrape together enough money to provide their younger brothers and sisters with food, clothing and medicine. At Tearfund’s café this year you will experience a little of what this injustice looks like… Receive a white card and you will be lucky enough to enjoy your fair-trade coffee and treats whilst relaxing on comfy sofas. There will be low lighting, a warm atmosphere and lots of opportunities to reminisce about your own childhood, play classic games, listen to retro tunes and add to our childhood memory wall. Receive a red card, and you will have to put up with a hard chair, and complete tasks before you get served at the bar.

WHAT’s ON! Friday: 10pm – midnight

Home Movie Kick back in the Tearfund café with some tasty fair-trade treats (and maybe even some popcorn) and enjoy classic kids’ movie, Home Alone. Gathering rave reviews and airplay across the globe for the new record, the band are looking forward to getting in front of audiences again and performing the material live; building on the success of last years concerts. Finchley is Ian Finch (vox and guitar), Greg Schofield (lead guitar) Chris Taylor (Bass) and Ryan Forrest (Drums). The band originally started in summer 2006 as a solo project by Ian Finch:

“Having been guitarist and cosongwriter in rock band Supervision for a number of years, I started my solo career in the Summer of 2006 wanting to do something different, something melodic and beautiful while keeping the big rock production, anthemic feel. I launched the debut EP “Walking with Angels” at Greenbelt, UK to a fantastic crowd and from there it began... “ ...and it’s started very well! - label interest, TV appearances, gigs all over the UK and lots of acoustic-only performances which has been new for me but have been really special. “No Clouds” is now the debut album release with the new band taking the successful textured, acoustic-rock formula of “Walking with Angels” and expanding it in both directions for a really diverse album of rock songs and mellow surf vibe, acoustic tunes.

Bluetree WORSHIP. ROCK. TECHNO(LOGY).Three words that don’t seem to fit very easily into the same sentence. Its just as well we aren’t confined to sentences. Through all the noises and beats, all the melodies and harmonies, what we want you to experience is the overwhelming presence of God. We want you to forget the lights, the stage and the hundreds of people around you. We invite you to lose yourself in worship of the Almighty. Join with us as we seek first His Kingdom.

The lead single from the album “Gonna Make It” has already scored a hit with the UK underground Garage scene, obtaining firm support from major players like DJ EZ (London’s Kiss 100fm) and Control-S. The album covers a wide spectrum of themes from the

In June 2005 the band beat over 400 other hopefuls in ITV London’s “Battle of the Bands” to win a spot at the 02 Music Wireless Festival headlined by such Alternative acts as New Order, Basement Jaxx and Kasabian. For two years running (2005/2006), Four Kornerz has been one of the headline acts on the landmark Young Voices tour which travels across key arenas in the UK and Ireland with combined audiences in excess of 100,000. With a memorable artist collaboration where Four Kornerz performed the classic “Lean On Me” with Joss Stone, Lemar and Ms Dynamite. 2007 saw Four Kornerz notch up a series of high profile appearances including headlining along side Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary at the “Gospel Gathering UK” in November 2007, the biggest Gospel event in the UK. October 2007 saw them hand picked as part of an exclusive line

up artist for the “Best of British”; an urban showcase festival that marked the re-opening of the Historic Town Hall Birmingham, by gathering the UK’s most promising and dynamic acts from the British Urban genre.

6DaysLater A ‘5 piece band’ from newtownabbey. With the delectable line up of danny morton, jamie neish, lee reynolds, danny ball and michael ball, being together for the last year, the band has travelled the country playing in a variety of places aiming to create music with a purpose. The emotionally driven music only ever calms down for a second or two before exploding again into a melodic and cataclysmic arrangement of guitar, vocals and drums that aim to please. THIS IS RADZILLA!

electric’ already released, and working with such giants as Matt Hyde (Funeral for a Friend, Razorlight), Innereye are certainly a band tipped for bigger things.

Innereye “Universal Pigeon’! and so began the long and extremely tedious road of choosing what words to call a band. Luckily, the Innereye boys have a cunning linguist in the backbone, who promptly crushed what was looking like the only, and atrocious, name option! This three-piece Bangor based band emerged from the Northern Irish music scene late 2007, rising from the ashes of previous rock incarnations. The individuals concerned have always had a passion for meaningful lyrics, catchy rhythms, and beautiful pop melodies, with the sole importance of the music being the music. Their authenticity is shown in the fact they not only have talent but also raw determination and experience, something perhaps rare in todays music culture. With ‘Bodies are

Foy Vance ‘An unbelievable voice...in the premier league of British songwriters’ The Sunday Times ‘The missing link between Richie Havens and Stevie Wonder’ The Independent ‘The most important solo musician to emerge from Northern Ireland since Van Morrison’ The Belfast Telegraph ‘Hugely impressive’ Uncut ‘Hope raises expectations and delivers them to an extent that is rare’ Maverick Usual tags such as ‘singer-songwriter’,

‘folk-soul’, ‘troubadour’ are perceived with a considerable amount of cynicism these days, especially since the music scene has been saturated with middle of the road artists, marketed as such by traditional record label formulae. Someone with a discerning ear and trust in their own taste should be able to spot who’s the real deal and who’s not. Leaving tags aside, Foy Vance operates in his own parallel universe. His music is an evolving journey, a constant search for artistic expression captured in the moment, operating well away from industry standards. Surely you’ll hear echoes of Otis Redding, Richie Havens, Tom Waits and Van Morrison in Foy’s music, legends he’s already being compared to and definite influences. An ever so modest Foy will laugh at these comparisons, but then again that’s what makes him so special. With his distinctive, cracked, soulful voice and a skill to write profound storytelling songs, Foy Vance belongs to a calibre of artists that stand the test of time, irrespective of trends or fads, delivering heartfelt songs about the human condition that everyone can relate to.

Crave [crave]: are an edgy 4-piece modern rock outfit that take their music seriously. Together since mid-2004, this time has seen them record a 4-track ep; storm the famed ICC studios in Eastbourne to record their debut album carve (Pssst in just 6 days!); gig relentlessly up and down Ireland; perform various on-air acoustic sessions and have just released their much anticipated second album entitled ’Waiting Games’ Its been a crazy ride for the lads, who won Sonya Macs Locally Grown competition gaining valuable airtime on N.Irelands biggest station Cool FM with their rock anthem ’Sorry’. Crave have been circuiting Irelands premier live music venues including the Limelight and Spring and Airbrake as part of national festivals, and have rocked their way into the hugely popular Battle of the Bands final

in Basement Jacks, and reached the all Ireland Final of the Global Battle of the Bands in Belfasts Empire. They’ve played Irelands finest Christian music festivals; Summer Madness three times and the Ignite Festival three times, Tara Music Festival and Greenbelt 2006 and 2007; performed live on sky TV.

“We put a set of songs together and started playing in the pubs and clubs in Glasgow. We started getting asked to play all over the place, so we set up our own indie record label, SH1 Music, recorded an ep and a year later, felt God say to give up the day jobs and go full time with the band!”

Through their melodies and lyrics [crave]: aim to point listeners towards the purpose driven life found in Jesus Christ.

“One thing we are NOT doing is striving to be culturally relevant or ‘cool’. We are doing what we do because it works and because we feel sure it is God’s idea. The thought that being in a mband, playing music etc, makes it more likely for people to find christ is an absurd notion and one we don’t like. Too much attention in the arena of church, to cultural relevance can be counterproductive and threatens to dumb down the gospel, there is only so much cultural relevance one can have as an alien in a foreign land!” We have teamed up with some great people along the way, our manager, Gary Smith from Big Ideas, people from other bands have been a great help as well, and more recently Furious Records which has been great.

Superhero Superhero have a goal, to reach people with the truth of the gospel and make absolutely killer nrecords! Superhero formed out of a few guys with a desire to write and be heard, getting together and fusing their personalities together with music.
