Welcome to SM2012 Hello and welcome to Summer Madness 2012, here on the glorious Glenarm Estate! Every year is a great opportunity to meet with God, meet new people and get encouraged to live our lives for Jesus, and this one will be no different. With a new site brings new challenges and a totally new layout. We’re only just getting acquainted with our new surroundings, so cut us a little slack if it doesn’t all go totally to plan. It’s all quite new. Nonetheless, this year’s festival promises to be as unmissable as ever, with even more outdoor activities to get stuck into. Check out The Village for more information

The Guide to The Guide Last year we made the guide really simple, but this year we’ve outdone ourselves. On each of the pages that follow, every venue has its own colour: be that on the map, in the seminar pages, on the programme guide or even on the arrows that you will see around the site. For example, the Big Top is shown as a red circus tent on the map. To get there, simply follow the red arrows on site. To see what’s happening in the Big Top, look in the book for the red page.

If you’re not the outdoorsy type, there’s plenty to keep you occupied this weekend, whatever you’re into, with great venues, seminars and music all over the Festival Village. This year’s theme is “Fashion Gods”. We’ll be looking at the Bible with the help of our Mainstage Speakers; Danielle Strickland, Duffy Robbins, Shane Claiborne and Mike Pilavachi, alongside a whole host of awesome seminar speakers. We’re aiming to create an atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable and are able to ask questions as well as having fun! We really hope your experience of Summer Madness 2012 is everything you wished for and more. (*Cue Disney music) The SM2012 Team.

Ps. If you are tweeting about this years’ festival make sure to add #SM2012

13. No pets to be kept on-site.

Crossing into any area demarcated by red and white tape is forbidden (this will constitute trespassing, punishable by law).

Leaders’ Responsibilities

Summer Madness wishes to make it clear that it does not favour sectarian propaganda or proselytizing within the Christian fellowship and anyone involved in these practices will be escorted off-site. This means that any group or individual which uses the SM Festival and its facilities for such purposes does so against the spirit of the event and could face a ban from future events.

Those who are identified on bookings as leaders are responsible for their group. Leaders should not allow campers under their care to go off-site without their permission or without a specific time at which to report back. Leaders should not go off-site without leaving some other adult responsible for their group and should inform the sub-camp leader of this change. In the case of an emergency, we need to be able to contact the leader as soon as possible.

The organisers reserve the right to cancel any booking (be it that of any individual or group) that they deem necessary and escort all concerned parties off the premises if these ground rules are not observed.

Consumer Church Andy Hickford | Seminar One

Soul Sista - I love it? Susie Keane | Seminar One

We live in a consumer society where we are constantly bombarded with the message that our lives are incomplete without that new ‘musthave’ purchase. What is the cost of this kind of culture within the church? What’s the real price tag? If the devil wears Prada, what would Jesus wear? Rose Lynas | Seminar Two Jack Wills, Hollister, Toms, Primark… are you wearing the right thing? Does the Bible have anything to say to our world of fashion labels and fashion victims? In this seminar we will discuss these questions and discover the secret to becoming a fashion icon! Video Killed The Radio Star Simon Henry | Tearfund In the god-like culture of the world of celebrity, image is everything. Simon Henry, a self-confessed celebrity enthusiast, takes a look at the current state of modern pop culture. From MTV and the power of image to digital media’s influence, we’ll be asking the question, ‘What makes you beautiful?’

Elaborate hairstyles, gold and (fresh for this year) a massive engagement pearl! Come and hear Susie Keane wax lyrical about peplums, ponchos and power struggles. How does our mandate for justice influence our daily choices? RE-imagine the Bible - seeing it through its own lens David Dunlop | Seminar Two How do you see the Bible? As a manual for life? Lots of books within a book? This seminar will explore some objects and metaphors within the text that might radically alter your approach to the Bible, your hunger for and your engagement with it! The aim is to renew and refresh our view of God’s essential Word. Mad Men #1 - “You’re a real piece of work.” David Cavan | Tearfund Do you believe in a place where you are accepted, valued and loved? Is this place called Church? Within a constantly changing culture, how does the Church continue to make itself relevant without having to dilute the core message?

How Jesus Liberates Women Danielle Strickland | Seminar One Does the Bible condemn women to second-class roles and responsibilities in the Church? Or is the Truth something which frees women (and men) to play their full part in the mission and ministry of the Gospel - and life in general? Retail Therapy Andy Hickford | Seminar Two What is shopping doing to us? In this seminar, take a step back to see the price we pay for our retail therapy. It won’t be a seminar nagging us about managing our spending better - the bigger question is how is our spending managing us? TOMS Talk - Start Something that matters John Kee | Tearfund A short inspirational storyteller session, hosted by TOMS. Today the man who has been around from the start of Summer Madness. Come along and be inspired to start something that matters! Mind Your Head Dr Maria Kee | CIYD Whether it’s dealing with life’s little ups and downs, or coping with major difficulties – Dr Maria Kee shows how to protect your mental health and avoid the common pitfalls and misunderstandings.

REAL-LIFE DISCIPLESHIP Duffy Robbins | Seminar One

Soul Sista - I’ve got it? Jude Trenier | Seminar One

What are the hallmarks of a real-life disciple of Jesus?

If your church was on a night out, what would she look like? Jesus wasn’t afraid of hanging out with anyone, so why does His church sometimes hide behind her Sunday-best? Come and hear Jude Trenier share her heart for how we can be God’s radicals in a broken world.

PORN SCARS Andrea Boden & Matt Summerfield | Seminar Two Time for some tough questions and tougher answers! Why is porn so damaging? How can people experience true freedom? What can we do to make a stand? This seminar is for everybody – whether porn is an issue for you or not. Life after ‘No More Traffik’ IJM & EA | CIYD So you’ve heard all the statistics, watched the films and been confronted with the truth about human trafficking and now you want to take action! But it can be difficult to know how to use your everyday life – your resources, your choices and your time – to make a difference in this fight. Belfast Abolition Collective, Craigavon ACT Group, Evangelical Alliance and International Justice Mission UK have, along with local politicians have teamed up to give you really practical tools to take action on behalf of those trafficked both here and around the world.

King of Cool Scott Evans | Seminar Two What does it mean to be ‘Christian’ and ‘cool’? Prayer or action Danielle Strickland | Seminar One

Does christianity demand dressing MODESTLY? Chaired by Jude Trenier | Big Top

What is the connection between prayer and social action? Are we naturally ‘prayers’ or ‘activists’ or is there a need for all of us to know how the unseen realm of the spiritual impacts on our every day lives?

A debate proposing that ‘This house believes that Christian fashion requires modest dress at all times.’ Panel includes: Rose Lynas, David Cavan, Andrea Boden & Peter Lynas.

Closer Still: Rescuing Christ from Toxic Christian Culture Scott Evans | Seminar Two For many people, God is an old man in the sky waiting to punish those who enjoy life. What if Christianity has lost its way? What if holiness is actually about wholeness? What if Christianity actually answers the question that so many of us are asking: ‘What does it mean to be human?’ TOMS Talks - Start Something That Matters Gareth Gilkinson | Tearfund A short inspirational storytelling session hosted by TOMS. WORSHIP LEADERS The Rend Collective Experiment A movement of friends is a hard thing to package. When something happens locally that is real and sincere, it probably doesn’t need too much hype. The Rend Collective Experiment started in 2004 as a group of confused 20 somethings started trying to figure out life, God and community.

@djstrickland

@davidlynas @bill_keys

William thompson Before there was Pat Thompson, there was William Thompson. William has led worship at Summer Madness more times than Rend have, and that’s saying something! Most recently he led worship at SM2007 on the Sunday morning, and in this 25th year of Madness, we’ve got him back to lead worship for the Communion service on Sunday.

Danielle Strickland Captain Danielle Strickland, and her husband Captain Stephen Court invest in several initiatives to help win the world for Jesus, including MMCCXX, a plot to see new outposts in 2,000 cities in 200 countries in 20 years. BE A HERO Campaign to raise up 10,000 heroes for children at risk, armybarmy.com, Journal of Aggressive Christianity, and books and CDs, all while seeking authentic Christian community and trying to incite a Jesus Revolution. Duffy Robbins Professor of Youth Ministry at Eastern University, St Davids, PA, Duffy is a 35 year veteran of youth ministry who is widely respected as one of the leading voices in youth and family ministry.

Moving forward to 2012, and Rend make their way to The Big Top in Glenarm via a busy six months in the States with Mercy Me, complete with new album ‘Homemade Worship by Handmade People’ in tow. David LYNAS David Lynas is a worship leader from Causeway Coast Vineyard, where he and his wife Emily also lead the church’s young adult and student community. David loves good food, surfing and travelling to the four corners of the earth (no one has told him that it’s round yet). He’ll be leading worship on Friday and Saturday.

Shane Claiborne With tears and laughter, Shane Claiborne unveils the tragic messes we’ve made of our world and the tangible hope that another world is possible. Shane graduated from Eastern University, and did graduate work at Princeton Seminary. His ministry experience is varied, from a 10-week stint working alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta, to a year spent serving a wealthy mega-congregation at Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago. Shane is also a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped to birth and connect radical faith communities around the world.

His warm conversational style, coupled with a quick sense of humor and a unique ability to make Scripture come alive have also made him a popular speaker for Bible Conferences, Parenting Seminars, Faculty Workshops, College chapels, Mens’ Retreats and Family Camps and Conferences. Mike Pilavachi Mike Pilavachi is founder and leader of ‘Soul Survivor’, an organisation seeking to disciple, equip and empower young people to make a difference in their generation. He is also an author, international speaker and pastor of Soul Survivor Watford, a congregation aiming to reach out to the young people there.

THE ARTISTS Silhouette Silhouette is the vision and work of a passionate Northern Irish songstress – Shauna Tohill. With recent appearances alongside Snow Patrol on their European Tour, and featuring in the recent NI2012 ad, this year is set to be a big one for Silhouette. @Silhouette____

Her main focus is to inspire, touch and mend the hearts of anyone who is drawn in to listen. Silhouette’s music is a breath of fresh air combining different musical elements and instrumentation – drawn from Tohill’s eclectic taste and experiences. It is high energy alternative pop laced with flavours of darkness, hope and desire.

KATHARINE Phillippa Katharine has always had a passion for music. This love has fueled a passion to create songs that are deep, honest and pure.

@kphillippa

Some years later, studying Music at Queen’s University Belfast and being an organ scholar generated some eclectic influences. Music, art, literature, nature and people give rise to inspiration, with a nuanced style that is sensitive and contemplative or, as in her own words, ‘Reflectivism’.

Four Kornerz The MOBO Nominated siblings are in a league of their own. Drawing on influences as wide as Funk, hiphop, Rnb, Funk and their Nigerian heritage, Four Kornerz take the listener on a journey of sound.

@fourkornerz

ANDY FLANNAGAN Andy Flannagan is a London-based, Irish singer-songwriter who was previously a hospital doctor but whose proudest moment as an Irishman was captaining England’s Barmy Army during the Ashes in Australia. His campaigning songwriting dragged him into the political arena, so he can often be found annoying MPs around Parliament. @andyflannagan

RORY MALONE Rory Malone is from Tauranga, New Zealand. He was born in England before moving to New Zealand when he was 4 years old. He lived in Masterton until he was 9 then moved up to Tauranga. Now working on new material and touring as a solo artist, Rory Malone.

Following the release of their debut project in 2007 followed by an extensive european tour, the band took a brief hiatus to focus on family and develop ideas for their new sound. Following the release of their single ‘DYNAMITE’, they’ve been on tour and their new album is due out in the next while. They’ve played at SM a few times before and they always impress. Don’t miss it.

He is first and foremost a story-teller, weaving hope and pain into songs that soar with beautiful, poignant melodies that betray his Irish roots. His battered Lowden guitar tells the story of fifteen years of acoustic minstrelling – at times mellow, but at times raging against all the things that break a broken world.

She took a shine to singing from an early age; singing in the pram to unsuspecting persons when out for walks. At this early stage of life, KP’s attendance at ‘musical concerts’ took place when when crawling to the piano in the lounge, listening to her mother play.

@rorymalone1

THE EMERALD ARMADA The Emerald Armada have been playing with each other since early 2010. Their ambition is to sail the seven seas and conquer the world with their catchy, traditional-tinged music. Recently, they played the prestigious Great Escape Industry Showcase in Brighton. @emeraldarmada

They are set to release their second EP in June 2012 followed by a UK Tour.

PRAYER MINISTRY The Prayer Team are a dedicated bunch of all-agers who are keen to help you connect with God and will be available after every Mainstage Worship session (somewhere around the front). They’re also available at the 24/5 prayer venue during the afternoons and can be seen elsewhere on-site in their MAROON polo shirts. There’s no funny business: your first name & what you want prayer for is all we ask. We keep confidences (then later forget), unless criminal or abuse issues, suspected or actual, are raised: SM will pass details on to the relevant statutory authorities.

24-7 PRAYER At 24-7 prayer, our heart is to see a generation really grab hold of a ‘pray without ceasing’ lifestyle, so this year we are taking prayer out of the prayer room and right into the heart of the hustle and bustle of Summer Madness. Look out for us popping up at random times with creative ways for you to pray throughout the festival! Amen.
