Earth Day 2022

This year the theme for Earth Day on Friday 22 April was ‘Invest in our Planet’. The day was a wonderful opportunity for the school community to reflect on the strides the school as a collective has made in our sustainability journey as well as to look forward to what more we can do.

Together, so far we have already achieved so much: notable highlights include attending a Mock COP 26 conference, reducing our plate waste, conserving wildlife, protecting habitats, building hedgehog hotels within our grounds, achieving raised awareness of Sustainable Development Goals, Fairtrade fortnight, Water Day, visiting a zero-landfill recycling plant, harnessing rainwater, CREST innovative waste-free lunch ideas and of course taking part in and winning the International Sustainability Competition against nearly 650 other teams.

The Department for Education recently published a sustainability education strategy, which outlines the role we must play as educators. They highlighted that the area where we have the most work to do is in reducing our environmental footprint, particularly in the drive to achieve net zero. With that in mind, we are determined to keep on striving to ensure that John Lyon’s sustainability journey and ongoing developments come fully into alignment with that strategy. n
