AND THE WINNER IS... Lake Macquarie is set to receive a brand-new cultural landmark with the Council’s latest architectural development—the Multi-Arts Space. Lake Macquarie City Council enlisted the help of the next generation to create a design for their new Multi-Arts Space. Third-year students from the School of Architecture and Built Environment at The University of Newcastle were tasked with creating a space that responded to the identity of Lake Macquarie, using a creative, sustainable and innovative approach.
“THE BUILDING WAS TO BE A STATE OF THE ART CULTURAL FACILITY THAT NOT ONLY EXPLORED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND ARCHITECTURE BUT COULD BE AN ENVIRONMENT TO HOUSE A DIVERSE RANGE OF ACTIVITIES.” “The building would in turn be expected to become an arts and cultural landmark that would enliven public space and draw people to Speers Point Park,” explains Samantha Bailey, winner of the architectural competition. Samantha’s design was chosen from amongst 90 other students who submitted their work, and was announced at a formal event hosted by Lake Macquarie City Council. “We had an afternoon where we presented the top five designs to Lake Macquarie council. This was followed by an exhibition where the winner was announced, and it was so nerve-racking. I could not believe it—it felt very surreal to think that my university assignment would be built!”
THE DESIGN ITSELF FOCUSES ON ACCENTUATING THE BEAUTIFUL ASPECTS OF LAKE MACQUARIE, AND IS LAID OUT VERY THOUGHTFULLY TO THE SURROUNDS OF THE SITE. Artist’s Impression
“I positioned large feature windows to highlight the lake, which will hopefully create a new appreciation of the lake and how it is seen by the community,” shares Samantha. “It is very exciting! We’ve been making improvements to the design to meet requirements, so the updated building is now a far better solution than the original. It was a great challenge to make design seamless and as good as it could possibly be. I have learnt so much from the experience and how important it is to work constantly on a design so it can be at its best,” describes Samantha. Lake Macquarie City Council continues to develop initiatives to enliven the area with the help of the community. Keep an eye out for more of their upcoming projects in 2019!

A WALK IN THE PARK Local resident Monica Stahlhut gives us the inside scoop on the best walking trails at Watagan Park.
Walk One – Wildlife enthusiasts 45 minutes
3.5km
Easy
I found this track by walking around the local streets and decided to mix it with some bush parts. Early in the morning or late afternoon are the best times to explore this trail—there’s less heat exposure and mosquitoes can be a bit of an issue later in the evening. I would recommend this for those who enjoy spotting wonderful wildlife on their walks—you’ll even get the chance to chat to some of your friendly neighbours on the way!
Walk Two – Peace and tranquility 45 minutes
3.5 km
Easy
This has to be one of my favourite tracks! It mainly follows along a footpath, but there is a slight section without it. You can walk this track at any time of day as it’s super easy, and you can even stop at the Avondale shops or cafe for a coffee before you make your way back home. I chose this walk because I love to see something different, and there are always new sights along the way, from baby goats to geese and ducks.
Walk Three – Backyard discoveries 45 minutes
3.7km
Easy
Explore almost the entire estate with this trail. Start in precinct one at the front and move your way up through the newer section and back down in a big loop. When the gate is open, I usually walk along the airstrip and up into the bush (this adds roughly another two kilometres to the trail). If you do decide to follow the airstrip, you should be on the lookout for snakes as well, although I have only seen a few this season. This is a really nice, quiet walk that you can take at any time of the day. It does have a few hills, but they are by no means difficult. For more of Monica’s favourite tracks follow @monstar_79

LUNCHBOX READY Do you remember the old school lunches you used to have as a kid, with the classic Vegemite sandwich (without crusts, of course!) and the healthy apple you’d trade for your friends Roll-Up (it still counts as fruit)? Well, here’s a treat you can create a packed lunch with for adults and kids alike—cheese, basil and black pepper muffins! Ingredients 2 Weet-Bix
3 eggs
2 cups self-raising flour
1 ½ cups milk
Sprinkle of salt
½ tsp baking powder
START FRESH
Lots of cracked pepper 1 ½ heaped cups grated chedder cheese 1 handful fresh basil leaves
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC and grease a muffin tin. 2. In a large mixing bowl, crumble the Weet-Bix into fine crumbs using your hands. Add the flour, baking powder, salt and black pepper and whisk to combine. Add the cheese and basil and make a well in the centre of the bowl. 3. Whisk the eggs in a separate, smaller mixing bowl. Add the milk and stir to combine. 4. Pour the egg and milk mixture into the well and gently fold the ingredients until the flour is incorporated. 5. Spoon the mixture into the greased muffin holes, filling the mixture about 3/4 of the way. 6. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes (rotating the pan halfway through to ensure even cooking) until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. If you struggled with your big New Year’s resolution to get healthy, it’s not too late to try and pick it up again! Here are Anytime Fitness’ tips to start off small and make a long-term difference. Try something new! It’s easy to get stuck in a stale gym routine,
but this can have dangerous repercussions. It can mean struggling to continuously push yourself, repeatedly exercising limited muscle groups or lacking the motivation to work out entirely. It’s important to keep it fresh. Go to a new gym class, or get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful scenery on one of Watagan Park’s walking trails. Check out the feature on the local trails near you (pg. 3). Change one thing about your diet. Committing to a complete and instant overhaul is going to be hard to stick to—especially if
your body is used to a pattern. Changing one small thing can have a huge impact. This could be drinking an extra glass of water through the day, shifting the time you eat by a half-hour or replacing sugary cereals with protein-filled oats. There’s also a healthy lunch snack in this Issue you can try out (pg. 11). Walk, jog or bike to your destination. Up those steps! While there
will always be those times when the weather is forbidding, or distance is too far, adding in one additional timeslot of low-impact exercise is a great way to get outside for the day and improve your headspace. Why not join a hiking group? Check out @hikinggroupnewielakemac and meet up with some fellow adventurers! Limit screen time by one hour. Our dependence on technology
is continuously growing. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing across all aspects of our daily life, but setting a goal where you reduce mindless screen time by one hour a day could clear up some more time for you to achieve your other fitness goals.
