We’ve scoured the Hunter for a friendly dog park, and found one of the best on our very doorstep—Speers Point. When it comes to our best friends (I’m talking about the ones of the four-legged variety), we want to make sure life outside of the four walls (or fences) for them is just as exciting as it is for us. We all love those moments when we’ve stepped out of the house to explore our natural surrounds. And while we may

ARE YOU BUSHFIRE READY?
With up to 99 per cent of the state declared drought affected, and with insufficient rain to combat this, we could be in for a bumpy season ahead according to Captain Leigh Chambers of the Cooranbong Rural Fire Brigade. “We have been lucky so far that the temperature, wind strength and relative humidity have been in our favour.”
As the weather heats up early this year, bushfire season is upon us sooner than expected. But not to fret—Cooranbong Rural Fire Brigade are here to make sure we’re prepped and ready!
The concern this season is that there hasn’t been a significant event in years to clear out any hazardous ‘fuel loadings’ (flammable material, such as dry foliage), meaning that when the dry season hits, our bushland is more likely to experience naturally-occurring fires. When it comes to the Watagan Park area, the main hazards that residents should watch out for are smoke columns and suspicious behaviour, according to Mr Chambers. “We are often called to investigate smoke columns which turn out to be legitimate pile burns covered by a valid permit. However, any smoke column on a fire danger of very high or greater needs to be addressed as a permit is not valid on those days. You can also tell the difference between a pile burn and a bushfire. Piles tend to be small, go straight up and are lighter in colour, whereas a bushfire will be larger, lean over with the wind, and is darker. If you notice a change in a smoke sighting, or aren’t sure, ring 000.” Most houses built within Watagan Park have a BAL rating of 12.5 or better, meaning they are designed with appropriate measures to prevent from an ember attack. With that said, residents should still be aware and prepared for a bushfire occurrence. “It’s really just a question of housekeeping, and minimising exposed fuels in and around your property,” shares Mr Chambers.
THE NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE OUTLINES FIVE EASY STEPS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME IN THE INSTANCE OF A BUSHFIRE IN THEIR BUSHFIRE SURVIVAL PLAN: Trim overhanging trees and shrubs. This can stop the fire spreading to your home.
Mow grass and remove the cuttings. Have a cleared area around your home.
Remove material that can burn around your home (e.g. Doormats, woodpiles, mulch, leaves, paint and outdoor furniture). Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the
gutters surrounding your home. Burning embers can set your home on fire. Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all around your home. Make sure you’ve got a reliable source of water.
The Fires Near Me NSW app is also a useful tool to utilise, and you can visit myfireplan.com.au to assess your risk of bushfire.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Now that the search has begun for Lake Macquarie’s 2019 Citizen of the Year, we sat down with this year’s winner, Andreena Kardamis, to chat about the award and everything that it means to her.
What inspired you about the other candidates from this year?
Each year, Lake Macquarie City Council takes the opportunity to
things and they deserve to be recognised. I think the awards are a
honour and celebrate key people and groups in the community that have contributed to improving the region. The ceremony, which takes place on Australia Day, names a Citizen, Young Citizen, Volunteer and Community Group as winners of these prestigious awards. Andreena Kardamis was announced as 2018’s Lake Macquarie Citizen of the Year after her countless contributions to humanitarian projects and organisations.
What qualified you to be nominated for the award? For the past year, I have been living in Bangkok, Thailand as Youth Advocate for the United Nations, but I started off as being the Chairperson for the Lake Macquarie Youth Advisory Council and then within the Youth Parliament as the Shadow Youth Attorney General. I was also the Youth Ambassador for Hunter Life Education. I jumped into the legal world and I’m now in the final semester of my law degree. Whilst at university, I became president of the University of Newcastle Law Students’ Association and then joined the Australian Law Students’ Association. I just do lots of volunteering because I genuinely love it. I’m also the Secretary for The Place youth and community centre. I really love that role because that’s a direct engagement with various community groups who come together and use The Place’s resources. I’ve tried to just do different things. The more you get involved, the more you understand, can contribute and
The common theme throughout all the categories is that people are putting themselves out there and they are investing time and energy into making Lake Macquarie a really great place to live. There are so many amazing community organisations who are doing incredible fantastic way to acknowledge the different groups who do a whole range of things for society. And most of the time, the community doesn’t know what these people are doing because people who do this, they don’t generally do it to get the acknowledgement. So receiving that recognition is really great.
How did you feel when you received the award? At first, it was very much shock. I couldn’t believe it because this year was the first year that they had reduced the age. Prior to this, the Young Citizen of the Year Award was for between 18 and 30 and the Citizen of the Year was above 30. So this year was the first time they had reduced it to be above 21. I honestly didn’t think they would choose someone who was in their mid-20s. And I didn’t think that I’d potentially done enough things or contributed enough to society to be the Citizen of the Year. But it just goes to show that age is no boundary to whatever anyone is trying to achieve. And I was very, very grateful.
In your own words, what do you think the award represents? I think it represents a recognition of people or groups coming together to add value to our society. At its foundation, that is what the award is about. It’s about understanding who someone is and why they’ve done what they have for their community.

HOP TO IT Remember when the simple things in life kept kids entertained for hours? We think they still can! Embrace nostalgia and relive your childhood memories by setting up an authentic hopscotch court for your little ones. Step 1: Measure and mark the court
DON’T FORGET TO SHARE A PHOTO OF YOUR CREATION WITH US BY TAGGING #WPWANDERER
Step 5: Lay out the court Lay out the pavers to make your hopscotch court.
Step 6: Mix the concrete Mix the concrete according to the instructions on the bag. You can mix the cement in either a wheelbarrow or concrete mixer. Remember to always wear a dust mask when mixing cement.
Measure and mark the desired area for the hopscotch court.
Step 7: Cement the pavers in place
We made ours about 3.5 x 1.2m. Use a line marker to map out
Place cement on the sand base where the paver will go.
the area to be cleared.
Step 2: Clear the area Use a rake to remove the top soil, leaves, twigs and any loose material until you get to the compacted soil.
Step 3: Lay the sand base Spread the bags of brickies sand until you have a base that’s 30–50mm thick. Level the sand off with a screed, then use a screed and a level to make sure the sand is flat.
Step 4: Compact the sand Use a compactor to make the sand a stable base for the hopscotch court to be built on.
Use enough to make sure the paver sticks to the ground. Place the paver on top of the cement and tap it into place with a rubber mallet. Use the spirit to make sure it’s level. Repeat the process for all the pavers. Make sure that all of the pavers are level with each other. Allow the cement to cure and settle.
Step 8: Finish off the court Once the concrete has cured, fill in the area around the pavers with pine bark mulch and stones. Then put some plants around the pavers to add a splash of colour.
Step 9: Time to play Get the kids to use coloured chalk to number each of the pavers. Let them get creative with different patterns, shapes and colours. Then it’s time for them to play on their new hopscotch court! Head to Bunnings Morisset to shop all the essentials for this project, or to get some extra tips visit bunnings.com.au

Eating a nutritious breakfast is important for everyone – but especially for children. It can provide up to a third of their daily nutrient needs and improves concentration! HEALTHY LIVING
Ingredients 1 cup of So Good Coconut Milk Unsweetened 1/2 cup of rolled oats 1 small orange, cut into segments 3-4 tablespoons of pomegranate seeds 2 teaspoons of a mild honey 1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom
Method 1. Place the So Good Coconut Milk Unsweetened into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. 2. Add the oats and cardamom powder. Cook for 4-5 minutes on a medium heat. Stir regularly to stop the oats sticking to the saucepan. 3. Remove from the heat and allow the oats to stand for 1 minute. 4. Divide the oats evenly between two bowls and top each with the orange segments, pomegranate seeds and honey. For more recipes like this, visit sanitarium.com.au/recipes
Anytime Fitness’ National Fitness Manager, Kate Allott, shares her top tips for maintaining the best health we can—and it’s more than what we eat! Many factors outside of what we consume can affect our body’s ability to perform at its best. Getting these right is equally as important as getting your food balance right. Hydration Dehydration so often gets mistaken as hunger, causing us to snack unnecessarily. As well as drinking throughout the day, try having a large glass of water before each meal to reduce overeating. As a goal, we should aim to have 3L of water each day.
Sleep Not just sleep, good quality sleep. Reducing technology (blue light), caffeine, alcohol and sugar will all help to get a better seven hours per night.
Reduce stress The hormone cortisol has many benefits for the human body, but excess cortisol, as a result of stress, can cause us to gain and retain weight, making any attempt to slim down and get healthy extremely difficult. Daily stress relief activities are a non-negotiable in my books!
Exercise While we all know you can’t out-train an imbalanced diet, any activity is a great option to burn calories, build lean muscle and keep your mind clear! Make it a habit to schedule in 30 minutes a day of any exercise you enjoy. For some extra help and guidance, speak to the experts at Anytime Fitness Morisset or visit anytimefitness.com.au CREATE

TO NURTURE A GARDEN IS TO FEED NOT JUST THE BODY, BUT THE SOUL.
10 CREATE
SPRING INTO SUMMER There’s nothing better than getting outdoors in the fresh air and ticking some tasks off your to-do list, starting with your garden.
Quench your garden’s thirst! The drier seasons welcome a host of problems for a flourishing garden. Because of this, your garden will need a bit more water than usual, and it will need to be watered deeply to encourage root growth. Also, it’s best to water your garden in the morning to allow enough time for the foliage to dry out—otherwise you could face such nasties as mildew and fungi attacking your leaves. For an extra boost to your landscape, add some nutrients to your water with ingredients like soluble fertiliser.
Stick to the shade If you’re mapping out the landscape for your brand new home, or thinking about replanting, now is the best time to do it! But when you are putting together a plan, make sure you keep shade in mind. Strategically place deciduous (shedding) trees to create some cover for your house and garden during the warmer months. That way, your landscape has the best opportunity to flourish.
Find your level When the weather heats up and water restrictions come into play, it can be difficult to maintain the health of your lawn. To combat this, it’s time to change the height of your mower! By keeping your grass taller, the lawn leaves are able to insulate the soil, preventing it from losing water due to evaporation. But if there isn’t a moisture problem with your particular landscape, it’s just a matter of mowing your lawns regularly to keep them healthy.
