STYLING YOUR HOME FOR WINTER Local resident, Anita Pratt, shares her secrets to making her Watagan Park home looking and feeling warm during winter.

As we’re retreating indoors to escape the winter cold, it’s important that our homes are made to be a source of warmth and comfort. There are so many simple ways that you can achieve this without breaking the bank, but I’m going to let you in on just a few tricks I’ve used to create a warm atmosphere around my home.

Add splashes of colour I’m a huge lover of mustard! It’s the perfect colour all year round as it’s ideal for any season. Plus it’s a lot warmer than using your standard yellow shades, so you can be sure it will add a cosy feel. You won’t need too much of this colour – just a few accents here and there such as a cushion or throw.

Update bedding This one is very important. Now that winter is upon us, it’s time to put away those cotton sheets! Invest in some good quality flannelette sheets and a thick duvet cover. Add plenty of cushions and a throw to make your bed oh-so-comfy (warning: you may not ever want to leave it!).

Roll out some rugs This is particularly good for those who have tiling and hardwood or laminate floors rather than carpet. A rug will add instant warmth to a room and keep those toes of yours off the cold floors. You may need

Add greenery Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some fresh greenery around the house. Be sure to choose varieties that thrive in cooler climates and don’t need too much sunlight, as the sun-loving types will be hard to manage when they are primarily indoors. But if you’re like me and don’t have a green thumb, faux greenery is a good option.

Toss a blanket on your lounge I know—such an easy solution, right? But rather than heading to the linen closet or bedroom to grab a blanket each time you’re cold, consider buying a throw or small comforter that matches the aesthetic of your living room and looks great draped over your lounge. It’s an easy way to style this area and perfect for snuggling up on a cold winter’s night.

Candles, candles, candles! Can you tell I love candles? They emanate warmth and to top that off, they look stunning! I have candles in every room of my house as they not only create beautiful lighting, but smell amazing too.

to invest in multiple rugs to place in ‘high-traffic’ areas, such as a living room or dining room.

Firepits and fireplaces are ideal places for people to congregate, so position yours where it’s accessible. You’ll also need plenty of fuel to keep it going, such as wood. So think about a place you can store the wood too where it’s out of the weather and stays dry. If you’re looking at an outdoor fireplace, be sure its size is proportionate to the location. A well-designed flue will help let the smoke out so that the fire burns well. Always use a screen if supplied, or consider buying one, to help prevent sparks. COMFORT FOOD

PREPARATION IS KEY Watagan Park Landscaping shares some of their best advice for caring for your garden during the cooler months, ready for thriving growth in spring. Winter pruning The dormant months are ideal for pruning and trimming perennial plants. You can also prune the vast majority of shrubs and hedges during this time. If you’re thinking about trimming your trees, now is perfect for evergreen and deciduous varieties. Inspect the tree thoroughly and cut back only failing or decayed branches. Unless you are absolutely confident in your tree pruning capabilities, we recommend consulting a reliable landscaping company. Have them remove any dead trees or high branches prior to winter if possible.

Remove leaves and debris Throughout winter, it’s important to remove leaves from your lawn every few days. Leaves and debris that sit on the surface of your lawn prevent sunlight from reaching the grass blades underneath. Less sun equals less growth, which means your grass won’t look as lush and healthy.

Prepare planting beds for mulch As spring approaches, get a head start on your planting beds: 1. Prune all shrubs, trees and perennials in your planting beds. 2. Remove all leaves and other debris. 3. After your beds are clear, define the edges of the planting beds by first hard edging, followed by a perimeter pass with a lawn mower along the edge, and then line trimming for a clean, crisp finish. 4. Finally, install your bulbs for spring. For ideal results, the bulbs should be planted in a well-draining, elevated planting bed.

Mulch installation Mulch your planting beds at a depth of 1.5 to 2 inches. Mulch is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also acts as a shield against harsh winter weather. As you mulch, be certain not to cover the trunk of any shrub or tree trunks. Mulch holds moisture and can cause trunk and root rot if it is spread too heavily around the base of plantings.
