We’re about to be hit with the Christmas season, with days spent ducking and weaving the aisles amongst other chaotic shoppers, wrapping present upon present in reams of festive paper, and either trapping ourselves in the kitchen tackling a piled mess of meringue, cream and fruit (it’s meant to be a pavlova, but who can tell anymore?) or getting sunburnt while flipping a mountain of snags on the barbecue. Regularly voted as one of the best in New South Wales, it has something to offer for kids of all ages, with a giant nine-metre spiral slide, a 12-metre high climbing structure (including climbing spider web nets), a double flying fox, a maze, a range of swings, a bike circuit, a wheelchair accessible play boat as well as a cafe within the fenced-in complex. Located right on the shores of Lake Macquarie, it makes for a great day out for the family.
Fur & Feathers Rescue Farm This petting zoo at Mandalong is full of heart. The farm only includes rescued, surrendered or orphaned animals, and allows children to interact with a mix of furry and feathered friends, including rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, goats and loads more.
Amazement Farm From farmstay accommodation to friendly farm animals and mazes to explore, Amazement Farm offers activities for the whole family. Located at Wyong Creek, they really have it all with magical mazes, a petting zoo, a kids’ playground, bike track, enchanted forest walk and bird sanctuary with various shows throughout the day.

This year, we want to share with you some helpful tips on styling an outdoor Christmas setting, so you can make the most of the festive season.
Get back to nature Look to Mother Nature for inspiration this Christmas. Rather than using synthetic materials, add a runner of greenery and blooms to the table. Why not make use of our beautiful Australian natives with some eucalyptus leaves and branches? And fill some jars with sprigs of
I know, I know—this sounds like a recipe for disaster (think of the mess!), but getting your kids involved in decorating can be a really fun bonding experience. And it is the season for family after all! Have glitter and use them as table decorations. Or, if you’re having a kids’ table, give them free rein to style it! Cover the table in kraft paper and have them draw their favourite Christmas characters using textas, crayons and pencils.
Light up the scene Make the most of the outdoors and use some string lights to brighten the scene. You could even wrap Christmas lights around beams or railings, or intertwine them through plants that circle the table. But if you want something a bit more simple, you can fill mason jars with fairy lights or candles, or dot the table with tea lights.

did you know that this beautiful sensory experience can also be a great source of fitness? As you are walking on uneven terrain, your core muscles switch to adjust your balance and strength. This means that you are activating them in a new way, toning those muscles that you might not have worked before. Not to mention, bushwalking is also beneficial for your mental health. Getting outdoors opens up your mind, preventing you from ruminating or focusing on negative thoughts. The Watagans has trails to suit all fitness levels. Here are just a few of our recommendations:
Boarding House Dam Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 718m
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting at the picnic grounds, this light walk takes you through the cool gully rainforest. On this walk, you’ll come across a massive 120m moss-covered rock wall and some sculptured rock formations along the creek. There’s also a creek and dam nearby to top off your walk with a paddle.
Gap Creek Falls Walk Duration: 1 hour
Distance: 1.5km
Difficulty: Moderate
If you’re looking for a trail that takes a bit more effort and finishes on a high note, then we recommend the Gap Creek Falls Walk. It takes you through a dense forest of red cedars with a large Illawarra flame tree. There is a fork in the track about 300m in; the left-hand side takes you through to the Gap Creek Rainforest rest area, while the right-hand side guides you to the breathtaking Gap Creek Falls.
Abbotts Falls Walking Track Duration: 3 hours
Distance: 7.3km
Difficulty: Hard
This walk takes you on a circuit through both dry and moist forest, with side trails to dammed pools and Aboriginal carvings. Travel through an open forest full of wild flowers and descend into the moist rainforest surrounding the stunning Abbotts Falls. LIVE

Potted plants are the most susceptible to overheating and drying out under the summer sun. Keep them cool by moving them into shaded areas where possible, and lightly mulch to lock in moisture. Avoid putting potted plants in saucers of water as this can attract mosquitoes and encourage rootrot. Stand them in a saucer of wet sand instead. And if your potted plants become really dried out, you can soak them in a bucket of water for about half an hour and then drain them.
Embrace the season It’s time for a different kind of spring-cleaning! We know it will be hard to part with them, but say goodbye to last season’s blooms and make way for some stunning summer annuals. The best flowers to plant this season are colourful varieties such as marigolds, pansies, violas and wallflowers that thrive in Watagan Park’s more temperate conditions.
If you’re planning on taking a trip this summer, and want to make sure your garden is still intact by the time you get back, there are Allocate about a day or two before you leave to tidy up your garden. Remove the weeds, trim the hedges and lightly mulch to ensure plants retain their moisture. You can also add a wetting agent to your garden so that it soaks up any rain that falls while you’re away. If you are still a bit worried, maybe call on a neighbour to water your garden in your absence.
Planting time Reap the benefits of summer planting by either setting up or adding to your veggie garden. With Watagan Park temperatures in mind, the best vegetables to plant are beetroot, parsley, pumpkin and radish. If you decide to keep some potted vegetables about, make sure they don’t get too hot as they will begin to wilt. CHRISTMAS CHEER High in fibre and bursting with taste, this Christmas almond and blackberry self-saucing pudding combines sweet blackberries with the nutty flavour and buttery texture of almond meal, making it a mouth-watering holiday treat. Ingredients ½ cup sugar
1 cup boiling water
¼ cup almond meal
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tbs margarine, melted
1 tbs margarine (extra)
1 cup orange juice 1 cup wholemeal self-raising flour
THE GIFT OF GIVING
½ cup white self-raising flour ¾ cup So Good lite soy milk or dairy milk 1 ½ cups frozen blackberries
Method 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine sifted flours, sugar and almond meal. Add melted margarine to milk. Slowly add milk mixture to dry ingredients. Stir until smooth batter is formed. 2. Fold through blackberries. Place mixture into a lightly greased two-litre baking dish. 3. In a separate bowl, combine orange juice, water, brown sugar and margarine. 4. Carefully pour orange juice mixture over the batter. Bake in a moderate oven (180°C) for 35 minutes, or until golden. Serve warm with low-fat ice-cream or So Good frozen dessert.

Add a personalised touch to your Christmas gifts and make your family and friends feel extra special with these DIY Balsa Wood Chalkboard Gift Tags. What you’ll need Balsa wood Chalk Painters Tape
Spray paint Twine Chalkboard paint
Step 1 Mark shapes: Using a ruler and pen, mark the balsa wood in the shapes and sizes you want your gift tags.
Step 2 Cut: Using scissors or a Stanley knife, cut the balsa wood to your markings.
Step 3 Tape: Tape the bottom third of the gift tag with Painters Tape. Step 4 Paint: Spray the blackboard paint onto the balsa wood.
Remember to hold the spray can approx. 15cm from the surface for an even coverage. Leave to dry.
Step 5 Tape: Once the blackboard paint is completely dry, remove the original tape and tape over the blackboard paint.
Step 6 Spray paint: Using a bright colour of your choice, spray paint the remaining balsa wood. Once dry, remove all the Painters Tape.
Step 7 Make twine hole: Using a Stanley knife, cut a small square
in the balsa wood where you will thread the twine to hang your gift tag. Thread the twine and knot.

“We first saw Cooranbong when my brother lived here a few years ago on acreage. He showed us Watagan Park and we saw how beautiful it was going to be. We decided to live here because there is so much to do here; you can walk through the bush, walk your dog, and do all those sorts of things, so that’s what really attracted us to the area.”
Ally and Blake are heading out of the city and into the bush with their move to Watagan Park. This outdoorsy young couple, Blake, 25, and Ally, 23, have dreamt of building a home together; of setting up a place that is uniquely them in an area that embraces their love of nature. Blake works as the licensee of a hotel and Ally is employed in an admin role for a construction company, and while they enjoy working in the inner city on the Central Coast, the pair wanted a place of quiet retreat away from the clutter. “We’re still close enough, but we feel like we
