Holiday Itinerary

Monday We travel towards Suffolk with a stop en-route in the market town of Bury St Edmunds. Visit the ancient abbey dating back to the Magna Carta, or pop into the Angel Hotel of Dickens and Mrs Pickwick fame, before continuing in the afternoon to Aldeburgh and our 4-night stay at the Wentworth Hotel. Tuesday Enjoy a scenic morning drive to the beautiful seaside town of Southwold on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, an elegant town with an award-winning pier and wonderful sandy beach. Enjoy an English seaside resort as it used to be – absent are the arcades and candy floss, the fun fair and big wheel. Instead, you will discover a quirky cinema, an iconic lighthouse, a splendid pier, a lovely sandy beach and a pleasant whiff of malt from the wonderful Adnams brewery. We return to our hotel in the afternoon where we will be treated to a delightful Cream Tea. Wednesday Today we visit Sutton Hoo – Which featured in the 2021 British drama ‘The Dig’ starring Carey Mulligan & Ralph Fiennes, Sutton Hoo is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. Walk around the ancient burial mounds and discover the incredible story of the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his treasured possessions. Come face to face with your ancestors and explore awardwinning exhibitions, the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber and the stunning replica treasures and original finds from one of the mounds, including a prince’s sword. From here, we enjoy a 2-hour cruise with tea/coffee and freshly baked scones along the River Deben, one of the most beautiful and scenic spots on the east coast.

Thursday Our first visit today is Otley Hall – a 15th century moated hall of outstanding beauty, set in 10 acres of gardens. The house is an excellent example of late medieval architecture, with a profusion of chimneys, and a multi-levelled tiled roof. The halftimbering of the original house can be seen in places, though much has been covered with later brick and plaster. The oldest part of the house showcases a striking twostorey kitchen, complete with a gallery. The hall features the remains of an early wooden screen, mullioned wooden windows, and massive, shaped wooden beams. Linen-fold panelling graces the dining room, which looks out over the Rose Garden. On our return we visit Snape Maltings, home of the Aldeburgh Festival and founded by Benjamin Britten in 1948 and today plays host to many concerts and workshops throughout the year. The Snape Maltings complex consists of houses, art galleries, restaurants, cafés and up-market shops. Friday Departing our hotel we return to Lavenham, one of the UK’s best preserved timber framed villages dating back to Saxon times – the main street was used in scenes of Harry Potter’s Deathly Hallows. In the afternoon we continue our journey back to the Midlands.
