Incredible rail journeys and the glorious scenery of the Scottish Highlands – the perfect combination for a wonderful break. Your railway adventure begins with a nostalgic trip on the Strathspey Steam Railway from Aviemore through the striking Boat of Garten to Broomhill. You will then embark on one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh, before continuing to discover Scotland’s most romantic castle, Eilean Donan, which offers incredible views of the Isle of Skye. Possibly saving the best until last? We board the Jacobite Steam Train for a journey through Scotland’s most spectacular scenery and across the Glenfinnan viaduct, with stops at Mallaig and Glenfinnan, home of the monumental tower built to commemorate Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Holiday Itinerary

Sunday Enjoy the ever-changing scenery as we journey north to Newtonmore. Monday The Strathspey Railway will transport us back in time on a ten-mile-long branch line where little has changed since 1863 when the Victorians first built the railway. The first stretch of the line will be known to many fans of the TV series Monarch of the Glen as Glenbogle Station. At Boat of Garten Station wander around the station to grasp the full sense of British Rail as it was in the 1950’s and 1960’s, before disembarking at Aviemore station. Later we visit the open-air Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore. Here, there are over 30 historical buildings showing how Highland people lived from the 1700’s to the 1960’s. Tuesday Today we journey to Dochgarroch where we will enjoy a 2-hour Jacobite cruise on Loch Ness where you will be able to enjoy the breath-taking vista of Scotland’s most infamous Loch in all its natural wonder. Wednesday We head to Inverness for our train for Kyle of Lochalsh. Our route takes us via Dingwall to Loch Carron. Here, we twist and turn through the tiny loch inlets before reaching Kyle of Lochalsh – the ‘Gateway to the Isle of Skye’. Enjoy fantastic views of the Skye Bridge and the Cuillin Mountain range before re-joining our coach for the scenic drive back to our hotel.
