A stroll around a country garden or parkland in springtime in Suffolk will always leave you inspired. On this tour we include visits to three of the regions most popular gardens and a visit to the historic medieval village of Lavenham.

Suffolk where we pause at Fullers Mill Not included: All lunches. Garden – an enchanting and tranquil waterside and woodland garden, situated on the banks of the River Lark at West Stow in Suffolk. It combines a beautiful site of light dappled woodland with a fabulous collection of rare and unusual shrubs, perennials, lilies and marginal plants, collected over the course of 50 years by the creator of the garden Bernard Tickner. From here, it is a short drive to our hotel where we arrive in time for dinner and our 4-night stay. Monday Today we visit Lavenham. Known as England’s best preserved medieval village and one of Suffolk’s important wool towns, you can spend time exploring one of the most picturesque villages in England. Later, we visit Kentwell Hall Gardens – a romantic, moated, mellow red brick Tudor mansion in a tranquil parkland setting. Tuesday This morning we discover Newmarket with an exclusive behind the scenes, 90-minute guided tour by coach and on foot, of the National Stud. The tour explores the beautiful 500-acre stud farm and focus on introducing visitors to the history and purpose of The National Stud as a commercial Thoroughbred breeding operation. We will then make our way to Newmarket town where we have some free time to explore before returning to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening. Wednesday A morning at leisure in Bury St Edmunds with its famous Abbey Gardens, connections with Dickens and The Nutshell, reputedly the smallest pub in the country. In the afternoon we visit Chippenham Park Gardens – a thriving family estate. The house, gardens, and park were created at the very end of the 17th century. The gardens have been awarded the highest 2-Star rating by the Good Gardens Guide and are notable for their superb formal and informal borders, lakes and woodland walks. (Afternoon Cream Tea included). Thursday After breakfast we leave and begin our journey home.

The Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds HHHH

Built in 1452, the award-winning Angel Hotel is on one of the prettiest squares in the country, opposite the Abbey Gardens. With 77 rooms the hotel offers traditional Georgian elegance and charm, mixed with modern design. Located 5 minutes from the town centre the hotel features an a la carte restaurant serving meals of British cuisine. The hotel has been visited by kings, queens, actors and writers. One such guest was Charles Dickens, who mentioned the Angel Hotel in The Pickwick Papers.

Holiday Itinerary

Monday We make our way to Cambridgeshire to the Best Western Cambridge Bar Hill Hotel for our 4 nights stay. On arrival we have tea, coffee and biscuits. We enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner this evening Tuesday The day out begins with a drive to Newmarket – Home of Horseracing. Here we visit the superb National Horseracing Centre and learn all about the history of ‘The Sport of Kings.’ Leaving Newmarket we drive to the historic City of Ely, an ideal destination for all interests and tastes, with a splendid array of medieval buildings and narrow streets. Ely’s main attraction is the magnificent cathedral, known as ‘The Ship of the Fens.’ The city takes its name from the abundance of eels in the surrounding marshlands. Wednesday This morning we are off to the famous University City of Cambridge. Here we have free time to explore before heading back to the hotel in the afternoon for our cream tea. Thursday After a leisurely breakfast we travel south to visit the Roman City of St Albans. At the city’s historic core, you will find the stunning cathedral – dating back to 1077, well worth a visit, and the award-winning Verulamium Museum will give you an eye-opening insight into Roman life. Today is market day in St Albans. The market dates back to the 9th century and runs the length of St Peters Street and offers an excellent shopping experience complimenting the established High Street names. Friday After breakfast we leave our hotel and return via the magnificent Shuttleworth Collection – The world-renowned collection of over 150 historic aircraft and vehicles, spanning the last 100 years, located at the Old Warden Aerodrome. Some of the most notable aircraft are the five Edwardian aeroplanes, of which one is the oldest British aeroplane still in flying condition.
