The NKBA report on their recent conference in Christchurch where delegates experienced two days of education, inspiration and celebration amid plenty of networking opportunities.
Hard working surfaces in hard wearing materials, sinks and benches combine the very functional with the very aesthetic, in the most prominent areas of the home. We look at some examples.
The favoured method of storage throughout the house, most of our major suppliers have comprehensive ranges from the simple to the complex, to cover virtually every requirement and space in the kitchen laundry or bathroom.
In a world where the finish is everything sanding machines play an important role in the processing of both solid timber and panel, we look at the latest machine readily available in New Zealand.
Ryan’s Kitchen & Joinery in Christchurch have long relied on Biesse technology in their factory. Recently they added the game changing HyFuse technology to their Biesse edgebander and are well pleased with the results.

Inrecent months, my business has undergone some changes with the introduction of a new CNC Machine and the addition of a valuable new team member. These changes have presented us with some change management planning, and we are dedicated to being focused on the future; good change management will get us to our goalposts. Both my team and I have been learning new skills, and it is crucial for us to adapt and embrace these changes. Understanding the mechanics and technical aspects of joinery is essential to ensure that our work meets the highest standards.
I care about professionalism, especially when it comes to dealing with clients and addressing issues quickly. I deeply appreciate your dedication to professionalism, as it is a fundamental aspect of how we conduct business and it sets us apart in the market. Seeking insights from fellow joinery pro's has played a pivotal role in the development and growth of my business. My participation in the Master Joiners has allowed me to connect with other industry professionals and to learn from their experiences. I am grateful for this network and I am keen to hear more of your change management tactics.
Amongst the current landscape of material costs and varying workloads, staying on top of quoting and maintaining effective client communication is indeed challenging. However, I am confident in the importance of our collective support for clients in understanding their
options, especially during the anticipation of interest rate cuts. The technical expertise of our respected suppliers, including your own, plays a crucial role in this support. Your readiness to respond empowers us to serve our clients better. Products made here in New Zealand offer consumers an advantage in accessing quality service and advice at the start of their project planning.
Our collective knowledge and expertise in joinery manufacturing, when shared among professionals, significantly reinforces our industry's progress and development. This progress, which also includes our suppliers, is a testament to the power of working together as a collective for the growth and sustainability of joinery in New Zealand. Your investment in these connections is crucial, as it provides a platform for sharing insights and supporting our industry's development.
I want to express my gratitude to the Executive Committee of the Master Joiners and extend recognition to our past Presidents. Our ongoing focus on strategic governance, including our branding project aimed at enhancing consumer awareness of our range of services and products, is a testament to our commitment to driving positive change within our industry.
Together, we have the power to influence consumer perceptions and demonstrate the untapped potential of working with Master Joiners, regardless of budget constraints. Your role in this is crucial, and I encourage everyone to keep their showrooms up to date and display the Master Joiner logo on their websites along with a list of services for the consumer to choose from. Display your membership certificate and the ethics and standards in easy view, they need to know the depth

Coming through winter this time has seemed quicker than normal this year. Not the truly nasty weather we have had in the last few years has no doubt helped. Our features this time look at three important product areas in the latest in benchtops and sink inserts that always catches attention, drawer systems be they simple or complex used in the kitchen in particular have always been a favourite while sanding and planing technology has also been important but often simply side lined. We have a closer look at these three areas this time round
With the demise of the biannual AWISA Exhibition in Sydney we have seen some local events come to the fore such as the BuildNZ show in Auckland and a machinery event held by W & R Jack Ltd. The Jacks event called JacksTech held at their Auckland showroom was, we are advised, well attended given the economic times we are in and perhaps is a model for future events here in New Zealand. We have coverage of this in this issue. I had the privilege of attending the Joiners Waikato/BOP Awards for 2024 held at the Velodrome in Cambridge in late August, which reminded me just how strong the Master Joiners is at a local level around the country. Take a look at the State of Industry reports in this issue to get a real idea of how things are around the country. This all is of course a lead up to the Annual Master Joiners Conference and Annual Awards being held in Christchurch at the end of September.
As we always do we have a number of storylines looking at various businesses around the country. Two of note for me were Ian Robertshaw’s Styehouse Design and the solid timber specialist operation the Woodsmiths up Maungataroto way. Both these businesses are founded on a pride in what they make: quality, well produced wood based product available here in New Zealand. It reminds me just how good locally made is here in Kiwiland. The drawer systems feature highlights what the consumer has available to them from leading world class local and international manufacturers. There is plenty to have a look at in this issue so read on and enjoy.

Waterborne low VOC coating system for cabinetry, joinery, shop fittings, kitchens and doors
When you’re an apprentice, the focus is on cramming as much information and know how into your brain as fast as possible, picking up those vital skills to become a qualified tradie. But when you’re surrounded by busy experts, it can be daunting to interrupt in the middle of a task to ask why they’re doing something that way.
Being the only one at your workplace who doesn’t know things that everyone else does can feel a little lonely. That’s why Timber Joinery apprentice James Turner is so positive about BCITO’s Apprentice Lounges.
The Apprentice Lounges are an opportunity for BCITO apprentices around the country to come together for demonstrations and Q&A sessions on their specific trade. Featuring industry partners, the sessions aim to enhance apprentices’ skills and foster a sense of community.
James began his apprenticeship in cabinetry at Steadfast Joinery in January 2023. His BCITO Training Advisor, Damien, let him know about the first-ever Timber Joinery Apprentice Lounge scheduled for the end of that year. Keen to meet more new tradies like himself, James was eager to attend.
“I really value in-person learning, so I was stoked that BCITO brought together apprentices like this,” he says.
Having experienced his first event, he emphasises the approach is also valuable for those a little further on in their careers.
“It was great to hear from others in the industry and share knowledge. I think it’s important for everyone, even qualified tradespeople, to take the opportunity to learn more and upskill.”
Bellamy and James Turner
Andrew Bellamy, General Manager at Dunedin's Wood Solutions, was equally impressed by how much it helped his apprentices.
“There’s so much value in collaboration, sharing information and helping each other,” he explains. “After the event, I noticed that they had definitely picked up a lot and increased their skillset. When you’re on the job, often we’re busy and don’t explain the why. The Apprentice Lounge ensures there are no gaps, and that apprentices' theoretical knowledge is equally as strong and is consistent with industry standards.”
As the events are recorded, they become great tools for any new apprentices to watch, even if they can’t make it to an Apprentice Lounge in person.
“Not only are the Lounges interactive and accommodate people who learn in different ways, they’re a great resource to go back and rewatch to brush up on your skill set,” James continues. “I would absolutely participate again.”
Aotearoa New Zealand needs more people from all backgrounds to consider a career in the trades. BCITO has the resources and support systems in place to ensure everyone can enhance and refine their skills. To learn more, head to https://bcito.org.nz
Jacks sales & tech staff recieve first hand training on KDT edgebanders
“Like something out of Blade Runner!” This was just one of the open-mouthed expressions of awe from members of the Jacks sales team as they visited KDT in China last month. From 300km/h trains, robots delivering takeouts, and touch screens on everything from car-seat adjustments to craft beer orders in the bar, the whole trip was like stepping into a futuristic theme-park.
The sales team was visiting southern China for an introduction to KDT’smanufacturing, as well as specific machine training on the models for NZ. Located in Guangzhou, KDT has over 500,000 square metres of production space – the largest facilities in the world of woodworking machinery. So large the tour of the CNC and beamsaw factory was by electric vehicle – to avoid “an eight hour walk”.
With over 40 machines a day coming off the KDT’s edgebander line alone, the scale and automation of KDT’s facilities has to be seen to be believed – a key reason for the Jacks team to visit. As well as getting familiar with KDT’s production, they also spent time getting training on the two key edgebanders now available in New Zealand - including the new, laser-equipped KE-706GB SUT on display in the Jacks Auckland showroom.
The Jacks sales team were blown away by KDT’s manufacturing. “I had not expected such sophistication, and on such a scale,” says long-time rep John Walton. “These are state-of-the-art facilities.” Christchurch-based rep Mark Stevens was similarly impressed: “KDT’s facilities were bigger and more automated than anything I imagined. Their robotic parts store was a joy to watch, and the efficiency of their manufacture was high level. You could eat your dinner off the factory floors - everything was so tidy and organised!”
The trip was a busy, humid and eye-opening initiation to the technological sophistication of 21st century China. The Jacks sales team returned to NZ with their brains full, new friendships made, and a new enthusiasm for the value KDT machinery offers Kiwi manufacturers.
Held over 3 days in mid August Jacks showed off their comprehensive range of woodworking machinery with live demonstration of major brands including Felder and KDT. Jacks CEO Richard Bealing described it as perhaps the biggest turnout they had ever achieved at such a show and said it was great to see customers attending in numbers from all over the country.

SCM Group invests in production efficiency and R&D to continue on its growth path
On 14 June Hiteco inaugurated its new premises in Rimini, Italy. Hiteco is an SCM Group company, specializing in the development and production of hi-tech mechatronic components for machine tool manufacturers.
Established in 1977 as an inhouse department, to provide components (electro-spindles, bi-rotational heads, drilling heads and aggregates) for the group’s machines for machining wood and other materials, Hiteco has grown steadily over the last few decades and is now one of the main global manufacturers in the sector for high-tech components for CNC’s used to machine a wide range of materials like wood, plastic, composites, glass, stone and metal.
The new headquarters in Rimini will allow Hiteco to increase its workforce, as well as improve its production efficiency (100% Made in Italy) and its R&D work. The projects specifically concentrate on the development of new digital services, IoT services and intelligent products complete with AI algorithms, as well as an expansion of the range in the stone, glass and metal machining sectors.
"Our industrial components are the added value, the technological heart of any machine that defines its quality in terms of performance, power, precision and reliability over time. Yet another reason for adding increased quality to the solutions produced which, in the case of Hiteco, are continually evolving to meet the wide range of demands from its customers”, comments the director of Hiteco, Massimo Benvenuti.
From a technological innovation point of view, all the products make their mark thanks to the use of sensors, in line with Industry 4.0 and a strong focus on keeping down the machinery's electricity consumption.
In terms of digital transformation and AI Hiteco has developed new digital services linked to the Hiteco connect IoT system: thanks to the intelligent sensors applied to the electro-spindles, it is possible, in real time and at any time, to monitor their state of health and performance, as well as subsequently analyse all the data from the same component to optimise its use and required maintenance.

As announced in JOINERS earlier in the year, Jacks is now offering the KDT range of edgebanders, while HOMAG Australia - via their New Zealand-based team have taken over sales of the complete HOMAG edgebander range. For the hundreds of existing HOMAG edgebander owners around New Zealand, a key question is “what about service and spare parts for my HOMAG machine?”
The joint press release from Jacks and HOMAG was very clear that there is nothing for HOMAG owners to worry about:
“Jacks and HOMAG will continue to offer service and spare parts as they do now. As HOMAG expands its local service capacity, customers will eventually have the choice of using HOMAG or Jacks technicians, safe in the knowledge that competent, factory-backed support will continue unchanged.”
One of the key reasons Jacks have been at the forefront of the New Zealand woodworking industry for over 75 years is their commitment to ongoing service and support.
“When you’re so far away from the rest of the world, having skilled technicians available locally is essential,” explains Jacks’ Service Manager Scott Villis. “Support from our suppliers during the day in NZ is either unavailable, or at best limited in hours. So wherever possible we try to be self-sufficient. This means having factory-trained technicians available to visit site or provide phone support. We also try to hold as many critical spare parts in NZ to get customers up and running quicky.”
Jacks customer support of machines they sell has always been priority.
The success of HOMAG in New Zealand for the past 25 years is directly associated with the level of local support that has been available. And despite Jacks moving away from selling new HOMAG machines, the same skilled people remain focused on supporting HOMAG machines around NZ.
“HOMAG Australia have enjoyed a close relationship with Jacks for many, many years” explains Elizabeth Kattenborn, National Service Manager at HOMAG Australia. “Where we can help Jacks with technical support or parts we do – because we know it saves an overnight wait from the factory in Germany, or the time it takes to ship from Europe. We’ve been working together for years, and none of this will change. While there have been changes to the sales channels, our commitment to customers in New Zealand remains the same. And whether customers use HOMAG or Jacks technicians, it’s the same skilled teams who have been supporting NZ customers in the past.”
Some independent agents stop supplying parts and service if they stop representing or lose access to a manufacturer. In such a situation, if no one takes over local representation, machine owners are left in a difficult position - no
local technical support to call on, or locally available parts. As independent agents, Jacks have long had a commitment to supporting everything they sell. This commitment is one of the reasons joinery workshops nationwide rely on machinery brands from the past. “Where we can, and where no local agent exists, we do our best to provide support to machines we’ve sold previously,” says Scott. “While factory training or support might be no longer available, we keep good records of manuals, we often still have inhouse competence on the machines, and we do our best to keep supply channels open to get parts as needed.”
“A good example is OMGA. We sold the last new machine over 10 years ago, yet we regularly supply spares and service to machines still in regular use. There’s a similar situation with Casadei, and Elumatec, and others. We understand that the life of many machines is often measured in decades, and we do our best to ensure customers get full value from their original investment.”
This customer-centric approach is one of the reasons HOMAG and Jacks are continuing to collaborate on servicing HOMAG machines in NZ. It also aligns with HOMAG’s corporate mission statement of ‘Success through partnership.’
Where other manufacturers might end their relationship with a distributor who moves on to a competitive product, HOMAG has recognised that such a move would not be in Kiwi customers’ best interests.
“Jacks built the HOMAG brand in New Zealand,” says Ross Campbell, Managing Director of HOMAG Australia. “And like us, many Kiwi workshops have a long and valued relationship with Jacks and their technical support team. We appreciate Jacks’ ongoing commitment to provide a lifetime of support for the HOMAG machines they’ve sold, and we’ll support them to do so.”
HOMAG owners are the main beneficiary of this cooperation. Furthermore, the warmth and integrity of such cooperation is refreshing when considering how bitter the separation of some other distributor/manufacturer relationships have been. Richard Bealing, CEO at Jacks, sums it up.
“Customers judge companies like ours on whether we offer value, and whether we can be trusted to do what we promise,” he says. “That’s why they placed their trust and investment with HOMAG and Jacks in the first place. And now, despite our divergent paths over new machine sales, HOMAG and Jacks remain committed to those same customers. With both of us offering comprehensive spares and support for the hundreds of HOMAG machines in New Zealand, the customer is the winner.”

Mercer has replaced its long-standing Wentworth sink range with the new Mercer Urban Series sink range, offering improved design features and a fantastic price point.
The new Urban Series offers four large stainless steel bowls with a Mercer quality satin finish. The R60 bowls in the Urban range provide a modern square looking sink with the main bowls a generous 350 x 410mm size. An extra-large 400 x 410mm bowl is also available.
The linear drainer design is the same as used in the popular Mercer Everglade sink range. It also has a true laser edge which makes it easy to wipe into the sink and creates a straight flange that fits tightly on top of the bench when top mounted. All Urban sinks are reversible.
Category Manager for Mercer, Jeff Busbridge says Mercer continues to have the most extensive range of options in the New Zealand market and the biggest market share. Stainless sinks include a mix of locally made and imported models, with the imported Aurora series of coloured stainless sinks and the Duro-Granite range proving popular. Taps and sink accessories also form a key part of the Mercer offer.
“Last year we added the New Ravenna Fireclay Butler Sinks made by Italian brand Isvea and the demand has proven really strong for this style.
“With our beautiful showroom at Residium in Parnell, the whole Mercer offer has stepped up another notch in the past year and we’ve now got a comprehensive offer, developed specifically for the needs and demands of NZ homes.”

Silica dust, a hazardous byproduct of dry cutting and grinding engineered stone, poses a significant health risk to those who breathe it in. Experts have labelled this issue a “preventable crisis.” At Archant, we firmly believe that everyone has the right to be safe from harmful chemicals like crystalline silica, and are committed to supplying an alternative product across New Zealand.
Hearing about stone masons across Australasia who have inhaled silica dust and subsequently become gravely ill underscores the urgent need for change. As an industry, our people are our greatest resource, and Archant will always prioritise the physical and mental well being of our staff, partners, clients and customers.
As a member of the New Zealand Engineered Stone Advisory Group (NZESAG), we are dedicated to ensuring that clients and industry professionals are well-informed on the safest fabrication practices, as outlined in the NZESAG Good Practice Guide.
In 2023, following Australia’s ban of quartz stone, we took the decisive step to discontinue engineered stone from our product range and since then, have travelled the globe to find a product that not only safeguards health and the environment but also offers the beauty and elegance of stone – an aesthetic we know your clients are seeking.
We’re proud to introduce Kleenstone ™ , New Zealand’s cleaner, greener alternative to engineered stone. Free from crystalline silica, Kleenstone™ is the first of its kind in Aotearoa. It combines durability, zero porosity, and a stunning array of colours comparable to natural stone, making it perfect for kitchen benchtops and surfaces.
Moreover, Kleenstone™ is made with 85% recycled glass, making it environmentally friendly and NSF approved. Available in an extra large slab size of 3210mm x 1610mm with a 20mm thickness, Kleenstone minimises joints.
Kleenstone ™ represents a new standard for innovation, quality, and design. We are thrilled to introduce this product to New Zealand, and set a benchmark for
safe, sustainable, and aesthetic benchtop solutions.
Available now, Kleenstone ™ is our newest surface range, sitting alongside our other zero-silica alternative, Archant Acralux. This is a revolutionary large-format surface material that combines the aesthetic appeal of stone with the luxurious feel of silk. With seamless design and on-trend colours, it is durable, and non-porous.

Earlier this year, Christchurch-based stainless benching fabricator MHM Automation was acquired by Fortifi food processing solutions group, a move which has seen it become part of a growing global network of innovative manufacturers.
With its roots in New Zealand stretching back to 1884, MHM Automation (formerly known as Mercer Stainless) has long been recognised as one of the country’s leading stainless steel fabricators. Benching Sales and Production Co-ordinator Diane Burton said the move was recognition of the world-class quality standards upheld by its stainless workshop.
“MHM's fabricators are true craftsmen who treat each project as if it were for their own homes, ensuring an unmatched level of care and attention to detail. When it comes to benching, this results in stainless benchtops that not only look exquisite but also perform exceptionally well, promising longevity and durability,” she said.
MHM's reputation for excellence is well-earned, with experience spanning various sectors, from automated plant equipment to custom benching for commercial and residential buildings. Its
fabrication workshop holds the prestigious ISO9001 certification for quality management.
The dedicated stainless fabrication team excels in fitting benchtops, splashbacks, rangehood covers and other architectural features to diverse spaces, offering customised finishes and polishing options. Their experience covers a wide range of projects, from domestic to commercial settings, including high-end architectural builds and multi-station kitchens for cooking schools.
The exceptional work of MHM caught the attention of the judges at the Canterbury House of the Year 2022 Awards, where their skilfully crafted stainless steel benches and splashbacks featured in a gold award winning house's kitchen, pantry, and laundry.
Diane Burton takes immense pride in MHM's recognition through this prestigious award. She emphasises that the team's dedication to service and delivery sets them apart in the industry.
“Open communication with both the joiner and the client plays a vital role in our success, allowing us to design and fabricate to meet the client’s vision and ensure flawless installation,” she said.
Now with global backing, MHM’s stainless steel workshop remains committed to supplying local joiners and their clients with precisely crafted benchtops and architectural features designed to last a lifetime.
ZOMODO was conceived and developed by Phil and Caitlin Ross, an Australian family renown for innovation and progressive thinking within the stainless steel industry. The ZOMODO philosophy was simple – combine innovative features, with premium quality manufacturing, at a reasonable price. The success of the ZOMODO brand has seen the range grow from 4 sinks and 1 tap, to a wide range of models, accessories, and tapware.
The Pearl Arc range was introduced in September 2019, offering a range of sink models, 3 colours, and several accessories.
The 3-step process was boasted to be the best available, providing peace of mind to specifiers, designers, and joiners across New Zealand. ZOMODO’s 3-step process still remains the key point of difference, that customers have come to trust.
• Bead Blasting – hardens the steel and creates a micro texture, giving the ZOMODO coloured sink their scratch resistant properties, and incredible durability.
• PVD colouring – the colouring process so accurate that each batch is indistinguishable from another
• Nano Coating – Each sink is coasted with a non-stick nano resin responsible for the smooth stain resistant finish, allowing your sink to be effortlessly wiped clean.
All ZOMODO sinks meet the NZ overflow regulations, are supplied with a matching floor grid and waste cover – all taps are WELs rated and meet the Water Mark quality.
ZOMODO BOUTIQUE
2024 saw the release of ZOMODO’s premium Boutique range – a range of sinks that epitomises quality, features, and innovation. Each Boutique sink includes the full range of accessories, which nest on 2 levels with the sink.
The large THREE bowl integrato is the true hero of the Boutique range and is considered the ultimate addition for the true entertainer.

From their factory site set in the countryside just out of Maungaturoto in Northland, solid wood specialists The Woodsmiths have grown to become the NZ’s leading supplier of a range of bespoke solid wood products including stair treads, slats & fins, wooden & aluminium cabinet doors, tables, handles and in particular benchtops. Daryl Boakes, the General Manager, took time out to talk to Bob Nordgren from JOINERS Magazine about the business, their products and why they have been so successful.
The Woodsmiths was established back in 1990 by the Boakes family. “Our stated purpose was to bring life, energy and warmth into the lives of great people through natural products. This life and warmth must glow for generations and inspire people every day” explains Daryl.
In particular they specialise in top quality, handcrafted wood products for kitchens, bathrooms, bars, cafes and restaurants throughout New Zealand & Australasia. They are especially well known for their solid wood benchtops that they make in their 1000+ square metre factory. “Our main markets are joiners and cabinetmakers along with kitchen designers and commercial fitouts. We make bespoke benchtops from a large range of timbers the most popular being American White Oak, Walnut, Ash, Rimu and Matai. We also use Finger Jointed Oak, Ash & Walnut from Europe & Eco Bamboo. Both of these options are imported in large sheets, which means we can offer solid wood tops at affordable prices. A newly constructed warehouse is full of these timbers, so supply is not an issue. The Woodsmiths are also fabricators for acrylics like Corian, Hi-Macs & Staron.
It is the Finish that Counts Nothing less than the highest quality finish is acceptable. Daryl emphasises “The finish is our trademark. We use both modern machinery for planing and sanding along with more traditional techniques to realise the best, most hardwearing result. Our resin finish is specifically formulated for benchtops and is the most durable timber finish available. Each top with this coating is given a 10-year warranty. In 2019 we bought the finish and branding of the Kings Generation IV company who were well known for pioneering very durable finishes of unsurpassed quality. We now include the G4 finish in our range.”
A Close-Knit Operation
“The values we employ in the business have remained consistent since we started thirty years ago”
Daryl comments. “Nothing but the best is acceptable, all are active members of the team, we work it out and get it done, and must be clean and tidy at all times.” Bespoke design is central to their approach. “In fact we have always said ‘if you can draw it, we can make it!’ The Woodsmiths have a team of fifteen staff in what is a close-knit operation. “We are lucky to have a well balanced, skilled team to make all our timber products,” Daryl explains.
The company has an allencompassing approach to what they do. Sustainability is key.
“Our team at The Woodsmiths is pioneering a new way of thinking when it comes to benchtop surfaces. Timber provides a beautiful surface that will make any interior stand out, it gives a focal point to any kitchen, bathroom or living area, however the benefits of timber go further than that. Trees are one of the main stores of carbon and will hold this even after it has been harvested. This means your benchtop is holding CO 2 that would otherwise be in the atmosphere. Using timber sourced from sustainable forests ensures that our forests are forever. But it doesn’t stop here … wood truly is a material that lasts forever. Benchtops that have been in
place for 30 years or more can be resurfaced and even stained to give them a new lease of life and many more decades of use. Native timber from houses can still be structurally sound after 100 years and be saved and reincorporated into designs. Initiating a new lifecycle and minimizing waste!

SILGRANIT is a patented granite composite sink material with superior strength and durability. With over three decades of material development, rapid advances in manufacturing technologies and several BLANCO exclusive patentsSILGRANIT stands as a testament to innovation and excellence in the industry, setting new standards for quality and durability.
What is SILGRANIT made of?
SILGRANIT is a patented granite composite material made of up to 80% natural granite. This finely ground granite is blended with a high-quality source of acrylic. This superior grade acrylic is made in-house under careful supervision and is blended with specially selected pigments which colours the material all the way through. The durability of SILGRANIT is the direct result of precise, strict protocols used during every step of production.
How durable are SILGRANIT sinks?
SILGRANIT is extremely durable and can withstand heat from boiling water, usual temperatures reached on hot pots hot pots off the stove and sheet pans straight from the oven. If you drop a knife or metal utensil into your sink and it leaves a mark, don’t worry. The metal has actually worn off onto the sink’s surface. All you need to remove the mark is some mild detergent or oil and a soft scrubbing sponge.
How do you care for a SILGRANIT sink?
A Silgranit sink is the ultimate choice for long-lasting kitchen bliss. Silgranit sinks use advanced engineering to produce a material that easily withstands everyday wear and tear. To clean marks and everyday traces of use from a SILGRANIT sink on a day-to-day basis, all you need is a sponge, some detergent and water. Slightly moisten the sponge under running water. Squeeze a small amount of detergent onto the soft side of the sponge. Clean the granite sink by rubbing it with the sponge in small, circular movements, using only the soft side of the sponge. Once you’re finished, rinse the sink thoroughly with clean water. Finally, rub the sink dry with a microfibre cloth in order to prevent limescale.

New Zealand-based Fastmount, designer and manufacturer of hidden panel mounting systems, has launched the all-new stainless steel clips (patent pending).
Made from 100% 304 and 301 stainless steel, the clips offer superior fire resistance and durability. As well as being suitable for fire exits and egress paths, the stainless steel clips can be used anywhere that is required to be fire rated, including both wall and ceiling panels.
Ideal for vessels in the Merchant shipping category such as mega yachts and cruise ships, the clips
will make panel installation simple and efficient as well as meeting requirements for the containment of fire, by way of their stainless steel composition.
With the male clip (MC-SSM10) screw fixed to the panel and the female (MC-SSF10) affixed to the substrate, all that’s required to complete installation is pressing the panel on and allowing the clips to snap together. One of the more impressive features is the 5mm adjustability the clips allow for, so that minor tweaks may be made to ensure perfect alignment. The unique centrepoint tool also aids correct positioning with its unique three point design that marks out exactly where the drill holes need to be made for the male clip.
With the male clip fixed to the panel and the female to the substrate, all that’s required to complete installation is to press and snap the two together.
For applications where extra strength is paramount, a final screw can be drilled through the centre of the clips to remove any flexibility and ensure panels are kept securely in place.
The clips boast a 10kg pull out load and 60kg shear loading, with tests carried out by SGS Testing, the
world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company.
For more information about the new stainless steel clips find your closest distributor at fastmount. com/where-to-buy or contact us at info@fastmount.com.

Niklas Arens has been managing the Arens joinery since January 2023. He started his career as an apprentice, followed by five years as a master joiner. Since his predecessor had no successor, Niklas Arens took over the helm in January 2023, breathing new life into the traditional joinery.
The team, consisting of master joiners, journeymen and trainees, is now the third generation to maintain the traditional craftsmanship in Bergisch Gladbach Refrath. With a modern machine pool, 3D drawings, CNC milling and advanced planning systems, the team of eight is a competent contact for private and commercial customers.
Whether it's tailor-made fitted kitchens, individual furniture or innovative interior fitting solutions — the Arens joinery finds the ideal solution for any room situation. Customer satisfaction is the
top priority: through individual consultation, careful planning and precise implementation, the company meets or exceeds the expectations of its customers.
When the time came to replace the existing edge banding machine in 2023, Niklas Arens' thoughts turned to HOMAG, as he had good experience with HOMAG machines from the time before he was self-employed. After careful consideration, he decided to buy the EDGETEQ S-200. The entry-level edge is ideal for manufacturing work — exactly the work that the Arens joinery carries out. It is compact and also allows the complete processing of workpieces, including joints and corner rounding. Initial automation of the units guarantees easy adjustment of the machine from the control system. This saves time and ensures that the settings have a high repeat accuracy. The highlight of the machine is the new application unit, which enables an even faster change between PUR and EVA adhesive.
Higher quality and significant time savings
Niklas Arens and his employees are completely satisfied with the new EDGETEQ S-200. With the machine, edge processing at the company is now significantly faster and much more precise. "Everyone produces everything," says the master joiner. At the Arens joinery, nobody performs only one production step: Every employee works on their project from start to finish — everyone has to work with the machines and be able to adapt them to their individual requirements quickly.
"Thanks to the finishing units on the new machine, we no longer need to perform manual postprocessing — this saves time!"
A new level of precision and efficiency!
With the new application unit and magazine on the EDGETEQ S-200, the Arens joinery is ideally equipped. It is now possible to switch between different types of adhesive at lightning speed. Whether EVA or PUR, the application unit can be changed in no time at all. Thanks to the integrated magazine height adjustment mechanism, the joinery can quickly and easily switch between edge widths. The integrated glue tank makes cleaning without leaving any residues easy.
For the future, Niklas Arens dreams of a five-axis CNC processing center with a five-fold changing system to give him even more creative freedom in offering the best solutions for customers. In addition, further digital solutions are to be integrated into the woodworking shop.

Modern business is datadriven, and modern business software is becoming increasingly specialised. In this context, software integrations become crucial. Your business could use some of the most powerful software, but if those tools don’t communicate with each other, your business becomes segmented, and your processes, while effective in isolation, will break down at the points where one process ends, and another begins.
For example, you may have a contacts database that is carefully organised, up-to-date, and easily accessible. But when you exit that database to email your contact a quote or a purchase order, receive information from them, track multiple conversations or store relevant files, you begin to lose precious time and information.
This is where integrations come in. With one system connecting all your tools and processes, keeping your information current and in
one place, while accessible from any area of your business, the possibilities are endless.
Imagine: the moment you enter a supplier’s details into your software, you can email them directly from that software, send and receive purchase orders, receive real-time feedback on product pricing and delivery times, and automatically update your inventory and job progress once a purchase order is received.
With Jobman, there’s no need to imagine. Jobman is endto-end enterprise resource planning software designed for manufacturers. On its own, it can manage contacts, leads, quotes, invoices, job, inventory, scheduling and more. But Jobman’s real superpower is its ability to integrate with the tools you already use – such as accounting packages, CAD/CAM software, and supplier websites.
With Jobman, your business will have:
• Faster, more accurate processes: For example, quotes which automatically populate job files and
purchase orders when accepted; or production schedules which quickly adapt to fluctuating inventory levels, labour capacity, and delivery times.
• Elimination of data silos: Enter your information once, and it will populate every area of the software, saving precious time and potential mistakes. When your sales representative enters product information into a lead file, that information is automatically transferred to the quote, the purchase order, the inventory, the job file, the workers, and the installer.
• Real-time tracking of purchase orders, deliveries, materials, job progress, etc.
• Reduced costs: Your processes will be improved through automation and realtime data tracking, meaning that purchase ordering is faster and more accurate, your inventory levels and job materials lists are kept current, and wastage is kept to a minimum.
• Access from anywhere: Jobman can be used on any device. Meet a customer for coffee and send them a quote straight from your phone, then send a purchase order to your suppliers when the quote is accepted.
• Scalability for growth: Jobman grows and changes alongside your business!
• Reporting and planning: With all your data synced to one software, you can generate detailed and accurate business reports, improving your ability to plan for the future.
Better processes = Better products and faster services = Happier customers!
So don’t waste time, try Jobman today!

The Fravol Master M200-23 has been a successful addition to Gallery Kitchens - increasing production and quality finish.
Gallery Kitchens, based in Napier, has built a reputation for producing high-quality bespoke kitchens since its establishment by owners Brent Marshall and Sharon James in 2013. Initially relying solely on traditional skills, the company has recently embraced new technology with the acquisition of a Fravol Master M200-23 Edgebander from Farnese, formerly Proform. Bob Nordgren spoke with Production Manager Ben Fursdon to learn about the impact of this new equipment on their operations.
Ben, who has served as Production Manager for the past two years, shared insights on the transition. "We have always prided ourselves on using traditional non-CNC methods that require high skill levels," he explained. Serving the Hawkes Bay area, including Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, and CHB, Gallery Kitchens has maintained a competitive edge through exceptional customer service and superior finishes.
However, facing a competitive market and growing demand, the company recognised the need to enhance productivity. About a year ago, they began exploring ways to improve their edge banding process, a critical aspect of their finishing work. After researching options, they chose the Fravol M200-23 Edge Bander from Farnese, a decision that has significantly benefited their operations.
The entire process is now four times faster than our previous method, resulting in a 25-30% boost in production while maintaining our high standards.
Ben elaborated on the decisionmaking process: "With a team of seven, we manage kitchen design, manufacture, and installation from our compact 400-squaremeter premises, which include a showroom, offices, spray booth, machine shop, and assembly area. We had to be creative with our space, and the Fravol, at just 3m by 1.2m, fits perfectly.
It integrated quickly into our production line, offering a consistent high-quality finish
without the time-consuming tasks of rounding and glue cleanup. The machine is easy to adjust, and the Fravol Glue Tank heats up in just 5-10 minutes.
The entire process is now four times faster than our previous method, resulting in a 25-30% boost in production while maintaining our high standards." Ben also highlighted the competitive pricing and exceptional service from Rob Hutchings and the Farnese team as key factors in their decision.
"In a constantly changing market, Gallery Kitchens is always looking to improve and evolve. The purchase of the Fravol has allowed us to increase production and quality of finish, making it a fantastic addition to the business. It will help us continue delivering exceptional service and products," said Ben.
Looking ahead, Ben mentioned that the company is always open to finding new areas for improvement. With a strong network of reputable suppliers, including Archant, Blum, Carters, FIT, Hafele, Hettich, and Laminex NZ, to support their service and products, the future looks promising for Gallery Kitchens.

In a world where the finish is everything sanding and calibrating machines play an important role in the processing of both solid timber and panel, we look at some of the the latest machines (and a bit of tooling) that suit the New Zealand market and are readily available.
30 Years Years
The demand for highquality, textured finishes has never been higher. Felder’s Structura machines offer performance and flexibility to meet this demand, and create unique and refined finishes on wood and composite materials.
Engineered with precision and built for durability, at the core of the Felder Structura is its robust machine chassis. This solid construction is critical for delivering consistency, particularly when working with hard woods. The single-sided mounting of the brushing aggregates allows for the processing of oversized workpieces that would be challenging on conventional brushing machines.
The Structura is equipped with two high-powered brushing aggregates, each driven by a powerful 4 kW (5.5 hp) motor. These brushing aggregates rotate in the opposite direction to the workpiece feed, ensuring a thorough and uniform brushing process. The first aggregate comes standard with a steel brush, while the second is equipped with a Tynex brush (D=200mm K60), designed specifically for fine and consistent texturing.
Another feature of the Structura is its user-friendly control system, which includes both electrical height adjustment and manual fine adjustment for the brushing aggregates. Operators can set the depth of cut with

... it has worked out well, delivering exceptional finish quality and proving very efficient in both air and power usage. It is also very gentle on belts.
As edge banders can sometimes be the problem machine in many cabinetmaking shops, so sanders can be for solid timber joinery manufacturers. We spoke with Auckland Next Level Joinery principal Adam Beswick about their recent upgrade of a what was a temperamental sander to a Biesse Viet S1 belt sander and how it has improved their workplace performance through reduced downtime and rework requirements.
Situated in the Wairau Valley on Aucklands North Shore, Next Level Joinery was set up by Adam Beswick and Brendon Sowerby in 2017 and has quickly established itself as a leading manufacturer of solid timber window and door joinery, where efficiency and quality of product are of premium importance.
With a belt sander that needed a lot of love and attention to keep in operation the company decided they needed to upgrade and purchased a Biesse Viet S1 calibrating and sanding machine from Biesse at the start of last year.
“The sander had been our weak point,” says Adam “not only did it required large amounts of air and power but it also tended to blow
out a lot of sanding belts, it could be good for a month and then blow 4 or 5 all at once, meaning a lot of expense, not just in belts, but also in time and rework.
The company had a previous relationship with Biesse through the purchase of a 5-axis CNC a couple of years ago and had found them and the machine good to work and deal with.
“When looking for a new sander I spoke to Dylan Staples from Biesse’s Auckland office and he showed me the Viet S1 which seemed perfect for our requirements and was also immediately available. We decided to purchase it and it has worked out well, delivering exceptional finish quality and
proving very efficient in both air and power usage. It is also very gentle on belts.”
Actually because of the large amount of air required by the old sander the company had been contemplating the purchase of a bigger compressor. However the Viet has proven so efficient in its use of air that they haven’t needed to upgrade that part of their operation - effectively spending to improve on sanding quality rather than air capacity.
“While it is a relatively low spec machine in the Biesse range of sanding machines its finish quality and versatility is outstanding and it is very easy to calibrate and operate. On top of that it requires less ongoing maintenance.”
“The gap between the previous machine and this one is huge” says Adam. “It is far easier to use and far less likely to breakdown or blow-out sanding belts. As well as that it is much more efficient on air and power - in effect a better quality and more reliable machine. Importantly, it has reduced rework requirements and improved our production scheduling while costing less to operate.”
S1 is the calibrating and sanding solution that combines high performance standards with reduced working dimensions. Ideal for small and medium sized businesses, the S1 ensures maximum reliability and precision.
Ideal for small and medium woodworking companies
Solid wood calibrating and veneered panel sanding operations and for any other general sanding requirements
Optional electronic sectional pad on the model with 1100 mm working width
Our standard stock machinery configuration for New Zealand of calibrating rubber first unit and combination roller pad for second unit 1100mm working width
Full technical support and spare parts available throughout NZ
DMC SD 90 is the exclusive multifunction roller unit (with interchangeable rubber sleeves of different hardness). With this new configuration, the machine becomes more flexible compared to the classic two or three-unit versions, adapting to the production needs of small-medium businesses.
The new unit allows the operator to switch from calibrating operations to sanding operations of veneered and painted panels, in a matter of minutes, by simply replacing the roller’s rubber sleeve with another one of a different hardness level.
This leads to a considerable reduction in machine downtime for classic maintenance operations. Its compact size means this sander is ideal for being positioned even in very narrow spaces, optimising production spaces.

Ryan Butler knows the value of technology and good partnerships. From their early days Ryan and his team at Ryan’s Kitchens and Joinery (RKJ) in Christchurch have relied on Biesse technology. Continuing their quest for excellence, RKJ recently installed their latest edge banding machine with the game changing HyFuse Hydrogen laser tape technology.
The game changer
Ryan’s Kitchens and Joinery is a family owned and operated business located in Christchurch (Ōtautahi), New Zealand. The company was founded by Ryan Butler in early 2009 with help from his father Bill and his sister Leanne. Ryan’s wife Kate joined the team later. Ryan had owned a building company for fifteen years, installing kitchens and joinery built by other suppliers that he thought could have been manufactured better, both in terms of build quality and design.
And so, like so many creative and motivated people seeing an opportunity, Ryan started out in a small garage with some basic woodworking machines. Ryan admits it was a tough market with plenty of competition. “If we decide to do something we’re not afraid, we get the job done,” he said. The business grew steadily and soon they found themselves in a small factory where they installed their first Biesse CNC
machine, a Skill nesting machine that gave Ryans Kitchens a huge advantage and over a decade of service.
In 2010 and 2011 two major earthquakes devastated the city. Overnight, no one wanted a new kitchen and even renovations stopped almost completely. Ryan and his team adapted their business model to meet the needs of the community, removing existing kitchens from badly damaged homes, storing these until the homes could be levelled and repaired, then re-installing the kitchen. Eventually, those houses destroyed completely needed a new kitchen and joinery and Ryans Kitchens and Joinery switched back to their core business, mainly residential properties, and the occasional commercial project.
With steady growth and the company doubling in size every two years or so, a new purposebuilt showroom and factory was
established seven years ago in the Christchurch suburb of Wigram. The company now employs 16 people, including four highly qualified interior designers and architects, who can advise on the latest ideas and trends which are showcased in their showroom. With a strong emphasis on attention to detail, RKJ offers design, manufacture, and installation to the Canterbury and wider area from their Christchurch base.
Ryan said, “Keeping up with design trends prevents the job from becoming monotonous, as these trends are constantly evolving. The recycling of old trends through new technology allows us to revisit specialized tasks from the past with fresh methods and products. Our Biesse equipment allows us to achieve these goals seamlessly.” Ryan’s father Bill originally did the research for suitable equipment and together they decided that Biesse was the most cost-effective,
well-made, solid machine brand available. RKJ’s recent Biesse technology includes a fully automated Biesse nesting line to cut their sheet materials, and a Biesse Stream A edge banding machine installed late 2023.
RKJ’s edge banding partnership with Biesse goes back a long way. Their initial Akron 440 using EVA glue was replaced with an Akron 1440 fitted with the Airforce (hot air) system for zero join (laser) edges to ensure their product remained the best on the market. That machine was upgraded to the new Biesse Stream A Smart, fitted with the revolutionary HyFuse Hydrogen laser tape technology and is used to edge every panel they produce. HyFuse is a gamechanging product supplied in New Zealand by HP Tech and is distributed and supported exclusively in Australia by Biesse. HyFuse offers manufacturers a further option in high quality edge banding.
HyFuse a turning point
“The transition from Airforce to HyFuse has been a significant turning point for us,” Ryan said.“The most apparent changes include a quieter factory environment, no delay for air heating, and the elimination of air cut-outs due to excessive machine usage. HyFuse offers a consistent performance, producing a uniform flame each time. We don’t have any issues resulting from fluctuating temperatures which can vary based on the factory’s ambient temperature or the machine’s operational duration. We’ve had excellent communication with our supplier including regular phone check-ins and in-person meetings. I have no plans to switch to a different method in the foreseeable future.”
Ryan continues, “Our experience with owning two Biesse CNC machines and three edge banders has been very positive, as they have proven to be reliable and perfectly suited for our needs.
The reasons for our long-term commitment to these machines are their user-friendly nature, the high-quality output they produce, and the exceptional support from the technicians who are always willing and eager to provide instruction when necessary. While no machine is flawless and occasional faults do occur, Biesse’s service team has consistently shown their commitment to resolving these issues promptly and effectively.”
Partnerships are important to Ryan and RKJ. Key representatives from board, tape, and hardware suppliers have consistently provided their advice and support. Through these interactions, RKJ forged numerous valuable friendships and amassed a wealth of knowledge from across the industry. In particular, Ryan singles out Biesse and says, “From day one, Biesse have been right behind us. Their service is very good and always prompt, Biesse have been fantastic for us.”
Ryan has grown the company to where it is today. They are proud to have built a strong reputation within the industry through repeat business and referrals. He said, “We pride ourselves in maintaining high levels of quality kitchens and joinery at competitive prices and we achieve this with our use of Biesse equipment. We are unafraid of change and we’re never complacent. Our company is always eager to innovate and experiment with different strategies to meet client objectives and distinguish ourselves from competitors.”
Ryan continues, “We prioritize customer satisfaction and strive to be approachable and cooperative. Our team, characterized by harmony and openness to new ideas, is truly exceptional. The company’s uniqueness, the growth we’ve achieved over the years, and the unwavering determination of our employees to excel make me immensely proud. We strive to be customer friendly and easy
to work with, we have a great team here where everyone gets along and listens to new ideas. The company is one of a kind and I'm proud of the growth we have made over the years and my employees’ determination to do a great job.”
RKJ has no fear of change or being stuck in its ways. They are happy to try new things and experiment with different methods to help achieve client goals and set themselves apart from other businesses. This open-minded approach paved the way for their latest technology, HyFuse laser edging. Ryan said, “Design is a key factor in our sales and our Biesse machines, especially our Stream A Smart with laser edge HyFuse technology is a key element in producing a product of superior quality at a competitive price. It’s definitely a game changer for us.”

The following selection provides an overview.
Robot efficiency at an entrylevel price: The new SAWTEQ S-300/S-400 flexTec
With the SAWTEQ S-300/S-400 flexTec robotic panel dividing saws, HOMAG has a proven solution for fully automatic cutting in batch size 1. Up to now, it has mainly been larger companies that have benefited from their efficiency and the advantages of unmanned production. However,
Homag will be presenting several innovations for their intellDivide Cutting optimizatiom software.
the shortage of skilled labor is a major challenge, especially in the skilled trades. This is why HOMAG is presenting a new standard model of the SAWTEQ S-300/S-400 flexTec at the in-house exhibition. This further development offers robot efficiency at an entry-level price and can be expanded flexibly if required - ideal for growing businesses.
More convenience, less storage activity: with quickTip and intelliStore AI - Offcuts
One software, unlimited possibilities - that is the promise of the HOMAG woodStore 8 storage software. The latest enhancements set new standards in terms of ease of use and resource efficiency.
It all starts with quickTip, the integrated assistant that proactively supports users by providing setting recommendations and helps the machine operator to systematically utilize the storage potential. This saves valuable space and reduces energy consumption.
intelliStoreAI - Offcuts also proves that intelligent software solutions increase efficiency. It can reduce stock movements for automatic offcut management by up to 40%. The new development enables the automatic storage of remnants on defined, freely distributed panel stacks in the storage system - if required, also in combination with classic offcut storage locations.
Reproduce components and create batches - now in HOMAG productionManager! Not everything in the production process always works right away. But that doesn't matter if you can react easily and flexibly and quickly rework individual parts. This is why the productionManager app now includes the "Rework" function. A practical feature: components can be digitally recorded by the machine operator directly on site and ordered for reworking - complete with part-specific information for work preparation.
Speaking of work preparation: With the new "batch generation" function, orders are intelligently summarized into production batches. This allows orders to be bundled into batches precisely in terms of time and material and transferred directly to cutting optimization or simply exported as a cutting list - depending on requirements. This not only saves money, it also reduces material consumption.
intelliDivide Cutting: three innovations for HOMAG cutting optimization
True to the motto "Always one cut ahead", HOMAG will be presenting several innovations for the intelliDivide Cutting optimization software at the inhouse exhibition.
• Optimize more intelligently with templates: If you want to produce certain components more frequently in a predefined arrangement or deliberately keep components together, you can now create templates and store them as templates in the intelliDivide Cutting library.
• Hand-in-hand with the woodStore storage software: All material data, stocks and panel remnants stored in woodStore are now automatically available inintelliDivide Cutting. Offcuts are transferred to woodStore after cutting and offered for reuse during the next optimization.
• AI-supported production time predictions: Until now, intelliDivide Cutting has calculated the estimated production times based on fixed assumptions. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), the predictions are now much more accurate. This improves planning and allows for more precise calculations.
The CNC accelerator for nesting - HOMAG STORETEQ F-100 single-axis feeder
The STORETEQ F-100 singleaxis feeder ensures even greater efficiency and flexibility in nesting - gentle on the material, automatic and fast. It is a winner all along the line - with minimal space requirements. It is controlled via woodStore directly on the CENTATEQ N-210 or N-510 CNC processing centers, creating a complete cell - including manual offcut management. The portal picks up the next panel just-intime from the stacking area next to or behind the CNC processing center using vacuum suction, rotates the material by up to 90° if required, and places it on the roller conveyor. Everything is fully automatic.
The edge for the trade: LOOPTEQ O-400 and EDGETEQ S-200
Modern industrial technology at trade conditions: This is what HOMAG offers with the new LOOPTEQ O-400 portal return as well as with the EDGETEQ S-200 - two solutions that represent a quantum leap in edge processing. The newly developed LOOPTEQ O-400 impresses with its high performance and compact design. Thanks to its high degree of automation and the combination of stacking system and workpiece return, it sustainably increases productivity in productionwith ergonomic and economical operation by just one person.

The EDGETEQ S-200 also impresses with the latest technology from the industrial segment. The smallest HOMAG edge banding machine already has highlights such as servo edge feeding, flexible magazine height adjustment and vacuum suction-based strip separation. In addition, there is a new application unit that enables adhesive to be changed in under three minutes. This simplifies and speeds up production considerably.
Even better drilling and doweling: DRILLTEQ D-110
With the all-new DRILLTEQ D-110, HOMAG presents an entry-level CNC that has exactly two tasks: horizontal drilling and dowelling. And it does its job remarkably effectively, with three individually retrievable drilling spindles and space for up to four workpieces. Additionally, the CNC programming software woodWOP 8.1 can be used to preset the height and depth of the drilling and dowelling operations. These are then called up automatically during the machining process.
The dowelling technology on the DRILLTEQ D-110 has already proven itself many times in higher-level HOMAG machines.
The countdown is on – register now for HOMAG Treff 2024 From September 24, 2024, the HOMAG locations in Schopfloch and Holzbronn will open their doors for you for four days in a row. James Cook Joinery, Petone based kitchen and joinery maker, specialise in producing high-end kitchens and solid-timber work cabinetry. Since taking over the business in 2021, Mike Telfer, managing director of James Cook Joinery, has set a high benchmark on quality for premium kitchens in the lower North Island.
A significant milestone has been the relocation to a new factory increasing the size of the manufacturing facility by over 300%. As part of this project, Mike researched the options for dust extraction and choose Egmont Air to install the very best system which would provide optimum suction performance, keep the factory clean, and provide future-proofing for years to come.
The challenge was the size of the new factory requiring a main-duct extending over 60 metres to reach the furthest machine. Egmont Air designed the Dust Extraction system with a high-pressure fan that can deliver high-suction over long distances and automatically ramps the airflow up or down as various machines turn on and off.
Cameron Prestidge, General Manager of Egmont Air comments, “The Egmont Air filter system also features automatic-filter-cleaning, rotary-valve discharge, power-saving eco-system, and guaranteed clean-air discharge to ensure James Cook factory can perform at optimum levels and produce the premium quality products that they are renown for”
Mike Telfer comments how pleased he was with the system “The suction performance is excellent!, the guys in the factory have commented the factory is so much easier to keep clean and no more downtime changing over portable bags” Mike also said the “Egmont Air team have been fantastic to work with, nothing was a problem. There was real effort up front in planning, we had some minor machine movement and it was easily dealt with”.

With this new 'maker', SCM strengthens its leadership position in cnc machining centres and continues to complete the range of solutions we offer customers in every market segment."
“Through this campaign we want to consolidate our market position, optimize production and develop new products. The involvement and support of a company like SCM is a great confirmation of the quality of the work and technology developed in recent years, as well as a growth opportunity for Springa's future.” - explains Lorenzo Frangi, Founder and CEO of Springa.
Some six years ago current owner Ian Robertshaw and his wife Michelle purchased this already reputable kitchen manufacturing business with a view to stamping their own mark and rebranded it to Stylehouse Design. Since then the business has evolved and grown to become known for their distinctive bespoke cabinetry for all areas of the home. Each project, big or small is based around individual design, manufacture and installation. Bob Nordgren from JOINERS Magazine spoke with Ian about the changes they have made to make the business an ongoing success.
“The business already had an enviable reputation with the phone always ringing so to speak “ explains Ian. “We wanted to move it to a higher spec bespoke offering where design was an integral part along with inhouse manufacture and installation. This fitted well with the catchment area around the business based in St Johns with the Eastern Suburbs in particular right next door.
Over the next few years we developed our team to include three fulltime designers and two part time designers along with two CAD people, some five cabinetmakers on the floor and two installers. We currently
have some seventeen in our team operating from a 700 square metre factory site catering to a middle to upper end market utilising the concepts of refreshing, renovating and transforming in an all-in-one package” explains Ian.
To be successful you need to meet demand and deliver on time with a well made product. Over the past six years the business has updated its key machinery to do just that. They have upgraded their edgebanding machine and about a year ago they bought a Fusion ATC 28/13 CNC machine with an autolabelling line from local machinery manufacturer Farnese NZ Ltd (formerly Proform).
“We have some pretty skilled people here making our cabinetry but to meet demand and the volumes, we needed to do more within the same time in a day/ week without compromising quality” points out Ian.
They had heard about Farnese through one of their staff who knew someone who had dealt with them previously. “Being essentially a nest based manufacturing operation, capacity is vital. This machine addressed all the issues we needed to solve. A robust gantry style CNC machine, it had a small footprint for our factory yet it could take the larger 2800mm by 1200mm sheets allowing for better optimization. It has proven to be an easy to operate machine as well.” comments Ian.
“Furthermore, it is not over engineered but a balanced machine which, with the software we use from Microvellum, works very well for us. The install from Rob Hutchings and his team from Farnese was smoothly carried out and the ongoing service and
spare parts regime along with an extended warranty has been excellent.”
The machine has two added features included, the auto labeller to keep track of components and a belt fed off feed table to automatically move cut board so the next sheet can be processed. This full configuration has greatly improved production in terms of time and quantity of processed board. “This well priced CNC machine has moved us to another level in the growth of our business by adding another level of sophistication to our already well skilled team making quality bespoke cabinetry.” says Ian.

BCITO has recently launched a new ‘Hire Boldly’ campaign aimed at employers in the building and construction trades, to help boost the number of women entering the industry. The number of women in BCITO apprenticeships has grown from less than one percent in 2015, however women still only make up just over six percent of apprentices. BCITO’s goal is to raise this figure to 10 percent by December 2025, through focusing on addressing ongoing misperceptions about women’s ability to take on physical jobs.
Reaching this goal will clearly signal the industry is moving forward and considering people based on skills and ability for the role, not gender. In the painting industry, where 24 percent of BCITO apprentices are female, it is no longer unusual to see a woman at the business end of a spray gun, brush, or roller.
"Despite the recent slowdown in resource consents and the pipeline of work for New Zealand's building industry, it's vital to ensure we have healthy numbers of new people entering the construction industry and building skills for the future. Encouraging more women into the workforce is not only a matter of equality but a strategic move to strengthen our industry's resilience. Employers play a critical role in shaping the future of construction,” says Greg Durkin, Director at BCITO.
In a 2021 report for the Women in Trades Collective, part of industry initiative Trade Careers,
almost half of respondents to the employer survey (48 percent) agreed that hiring and supporting women tradespeople was a challenge because it would be hard to accommodate pregnant women in the workplace. Fortysix percent also said they would find it difficult to hire women because the workplace can be physically challenging.
Women looking for work cited receiving questions from potential employers such as “you realise there is dirt involved in this job?”, or the outright statement “we’re looking for a male”.
“When we have examples such as the BuildHERS project in Whenuapai, a four-bedroom home project-managed and built entirely by a female crew, they demonstrate how outdated or misinformed these perceptions are. Women can do anything their male colleagues can do, and that’s what we hope to educate more employers about, to help the whole sector reach a goal of 30 percent female representation by 2040,” Durkin says.
Employing more women in construction brings numerous benefits. By encouraging more women to join the workforce, employers can tap into a broader talent pool. A diverse workforce also brings varied perspectives, leading to innovative solutions and improved problem-solving. Women can offer new ideas and approaches that benefit the entire industry. Companies known for their commitment to diversity
and inclusion often enjoy a better reputation, which can attract top talent and improve relationships with clients and partners.
Meanwhile, more inclusive workplaces also tend to have higher employee satisfaction and retention rates.
“The women and the men bounce off each other in ways that enhance the job. It’s been fabulous for us. In fact, we’ve become quite successful through it,” says Maria Williams, co-owner of family business Kevin Paul Painters and Decorators, which also employs daughter Lonae Paul as part of a diverse crew.
To accompany the campaign, BCITO has created videos telling the stories of fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and brothers who have not just hired women in trades but have seen positive changes within their businesses. Many like Kevin and Maria also talk about why their trade is a good career for their female family members.
“We’re calling on all building and construction employers to watch and share these videos, and actively participate in fostering a more inclusive trades industry by considering female apprenticeships,” Durkin says.

How employers can make a difference
• Review hiring practices: Ensure that job advertisements and recruitment processes are inclusive and free from gender bias. Consider implementing blind recruitment practices to focus on skills and experience.
• Create supportive work environments: Develop policies and practices that support work-life balance and provide a safe and respectful workplace for all employees. Consider flexible working arrangements and mentorship programmes.
• Promote training and development: Encourage and support female employees to pursue training and career development opportunities. This not only benefits the individual but also strengthens the overall skill set of the workforce.
• Lead by example: Senior leaders and managers should actively promote diversity and inclusion within their teams. This includes addressing any unconscious biases and championing the benefits of a diverse workforce.
3D-printed polymer components will be able to resist much higher temperatures in future - in the engine compartment of a car, for example. While commercially available SLS printing materials threaten to deform at over 80°C, the new powdery material iglidur i230 from igus can withstand a longterm application temperature of 110°C. Furthermore, it is free of PTFE and around 80% more wear-resistant than the classic PA12.
More and more designers are turning to 3D printers to produce components quickly and cost-effectively, especially for small series and prototypes. Selective laser sintering (SLS) is particularly popular. In this additive process, a printer melts plastic powder layer by layer to form components, such as a plain bearing. The problem is that components made from standard SLS printing materials such as PA12 are generally only used in applications with temperatures of 80°C or less. Beyond this limit, the material becomes soft and loses its dimensional stability. A no-go for many areas of application, for example for bearings in the engine compartment of a car, industrial plants or various air-

conditioning and cooling systems. "As the demand for 3D-printed plain bearings for applications with high ambient temperatures has increased, we have developed a new SLS printing material called iglidur i230," says Paul Gomer, Material Developer in 3D Printing at igus. Tests in certified external laboratories in accordance with DIN EN ISO 75 HDT-A and HDT-B have proven the heat resistance. Accordingly, the powdery printing material is suitable for long-term application temperatures of up
to 110°C. It can even withstand extreme temperatures of up to 170°C for short periods without deforming. The material is also electrostatically dissipative and thus protects machines and systems from electrostatic discharges, which in the worst case can cause fires and explosions. iglidur i230, like many other igus materials, is also free of PTFE.
80% more wear-resistant than PA12 iglidur i230 is not only particularly temperature-resistant, but also
withstands movement. Tests in the igus in-house laboratory have proven that the printing material is around 80% more wearresistant than PA12. "3D-printed plain bearings made from iglidur i230 have a significantly longer service life, increase the efficiency of machines, systems and vehicles and reduce the need for maintenance," says Gomer.
At the same time, the material has around 50% higher mechanical strength than PA12 at room temperature. In addition, the material withstood a pressure of 94MPa in bending tests. "This makes it possible, for example, to achieve the same component strength in plain bearings with a thinner wall thickness and to save room and weight in compact installation spaces," emphasises Gomer. Last but not least, users of the 3D-printed plain bearings made of iglidur i230 can dispense with timeconsuming relubrication work. Solid lubricants are integrated into the SLS printing material to ensure low-friction dry operation.

In the competitive world of commercial and residential cabinetry, Spacetech has risen to prominence as an award-winning leader in craftsmanship and innovation. Located in Rukuhia, near Hamilton Airport, Spacetech is renowned for delivering bespoke cabinetry solutions that set new standards in the industry. Whether it's transforming a cozy café, crafting a sophisticated restaurant interior, designing a custom kitchen, or managing a large-scale apartment development, Spacetech consistently exceeds expectations.
With a state-of-the-art workshop and a team of in-house experts, Spacetech brings an unwavering commitment to quality to every project. Their dedication has earned them industry recognition and awards, making them the go-to choice for clients who seek excellence in every detail.
On moving to new premises, and to be able to exceed their customers expectations, Spacetech chose cutting edge technology including a top-of-the-line 5-Axis CNC machine to install at the new address. To deliver the unparalleled precision, (nearest micro millimetre) and consistency the CNC is capable of, the joinery workshop has to be maintained at an immaculately clean level: no dust!
Daniel Billings, Director of Spacetech required a completely new dust filtration system so contacted NZ DUCT+FLEX to specify a solution that would cope with the dust type and volume produced. And he needed a solution quickly.
George Matusek, who is the NZ Duct+Flex Technical Sales Manager for the area, suggested a 2 Module Double Bay filter to cope with the large air volumes required by the CNC. This large capacity filter system was fitted with a 1 metre long rotary valve exit which drops dust into the containers–in this installation the filter was placed on a frame to allow for ease of bin emptying.
In specifying a supplier, speed was very important to Spacetech: the filter was installed one month after the decision to go ahead, made possible as all items are in stock in the Auckland warehouses making NZ Duct+flex very flexible to work with.
As NZ Duct+Flex use their own full time permanent staff to install, they were able to work around the business as it was still running, without stopping the CNC, saving the customer any non productive downtime. Everything was put in place including the new LIPLOCK™ ducting system.
Modular Bag Houses may be one of the older filter methods, but they are still often a very cost efective solution for high air volumes and heavy dust loads in not only the wood working industry but others
also. NZ Duct+Flex offer a range of filters from 1000m³ /hour to well over 100,000m3 / hour if it’s required.
“The secret to long lasting dust removal, with minimal maintenance, is sizing up the filter, fan and the needs of the customer machinery correctly” says George Matusek from NZ Duct+Flex. “We promised Spacetech we would work with them and around them which we achieved in a week – just leaving the final commissioning with a VSD fitted.”
The Spacetech extraction system has been operating for over 6 months now and Daniel Billings says its one of the best investments they have made –“ Previously we had 3 or 4 stand alone extraction units for the various stations: these required manual emptying every day or so, creating downtime and additional physical labour for the team. Now our team can focus on what matters most, and the workshop is cleaner, healthier and more efficient. “

Keep the schedule full
As the economy shifts, many of us in the joinery industry find ourselves with less work. However, not everyone is facing a slowdown; just this week, I spoke with three firms enjoying record months. So, it’s not all gloom and doom. For those of us with some “spare time” in our workshops or teams, it’s crucial to ensure this time is being used wisely.
We’ve all seen how tasks can drag on when there isn’t enough work in the pipeline, leading to a lack of pressure to keep things flowing smoothly and profitably. The phrase “fix the roof when the sun is shining” comes to mind—a reminder to make the most of the time we have, before things change and business picks up again.
Many companies have had to downsize due to the economic climate, retaining only their best team members for the future. However, even with a leaner team, there are times when production gaps or site delays lead to underutilised hours. Without a focus on productivity, jobs can expand to fill the available time, resulting in lower gross profit and a loss of momentum within the team. The key is to maintain a sense of urgency and focus.
Every job must contribute to the bottom line and time is the thing we have the most control over, what we do with it and how well it is spent.
Choosing the right time to do tasks makes them easier.
If a job has a set number of hours allocated, it’s vital to aim to complete it within that target. If the pace slows down, the job becomes less profitable, and the team may lose their edge. When work picks up again, they may find it challenging to regain their previous pace and efficiency.
Now is also an ideal time to tackle those internal projects and improvements that often get pushed aside. Whether it’s software upgrades, housekeeping, material storage optimization, inventory control, training, or branding initiatives, these tasks should be treated like any other job in the business. Create a detailed plan with objectives, a budget, and a timeline. Enter these projects into your planning system, and when there’s a production or administrative gap, schedule them in. Make it clear to your team that
maintaining pace is crucial for both customer jobs and internal projects. Place emphasis on these improvement projects at toolbox meetings. By doing this, you are creating a positive vision of the future and demonstrating your commitment to the business, the team and the culture.
Some companies are seizing this opportunity (while keeping cash flow in mind) to focus on improvements. Remember, the economy is cyclical, just like everything else. Now is the time for your team to practice, challenge themselves, and learn new skills. This applies across all areas of the business, from customer service, production and installation.
NKBA was excited to welcome members from around the country to Christchurch in July for the 2024 NKBA Conference. Held in the stunning Christchurch Town Hall Limes Room, with picturesque views of the Avon River, this year’s conference was certainly one to remember. Delegates experienced two full days of industry education, inspiration, celebration, and plenty of networking opportunities.
Following an evening of welcome events, a frosty Christchurch morning paved the way for crisp blue skies as Day One of the conference kicked off with an industry panel discussion on the latest kitchen and bathroom trends and products on display at Europe’s premier kitchen design exhibition, EuroCucina.
Keynote speaker and New Zealand design icon Karen Walker gave a fascinating presentation on her career path which highlighted the importance of sustainability in both design and business, followed by renowned architectural photographer Simon Devitt who shared an insightful talk on how he weaves storytelling into his stunning work.
Delegates then spent the afternoon exploring Christchurch's revitalised central city while completing fun challenges set by Hafele, Heirloom, Cosentino, Resene, Harvey Norman Commercial, and Miele, which included a competitive game of cornhole, challenging brain busters, and learning the art of cocktail garnishing.

We were also delighted to announce Angela Edgar from Designer Homeware as the winner of the 2024 BCITO Judy Bark Most Promising Student Award, and Lauren Edwards of Fluid Interiors as the 2024 NKBA Outstanding Graduate.
In what could be described as a ‘product speed dating’ session, Day Two's fast-paced Sponsors Pod session was as popular as ever with NKBA suppliers showcasing the latest kitchen and bathroom products and innovations to our designer members.
Scott Wilson of Digital Influence presented two workshops bursting with practical tips on how to future proof business by leveraging the power of AI and social media, and a panel of kitchen and bathroom industry experts presented an informative discussion on how to deal with tricky clients.
The programme concluded with presentations from Jason Gunn on public speaking and engagement, and Cam Calkoen on what happens when we defy the odds, embrace our uniqueness, and ‘live for awesome’. Widely regarded as the highlights of the conference, both speakers were equal parts hilarious, inspirational, and moving.
The conference wrapped up with a lively social event featuring plenty of dancing, with the evening’s memories captured via a fun photobooth.
Next year’s NKBA conference promises to continue the tradition of a strong focus on industry education and fostering meaningful connections - stay tuned for details!
Reports from Branch Presidents August 2024
Our AGM was held at the end of May and was a success with a good turnout. I want to thank oursupportive host Reward Hospitality (Burn & Ferrall) for the use of their fantastic showroom and spoiling us with great hospitality. The main agenda item of the meeting was the election of Officers. As there was no new nomination the current Officers were happy to continue by a unanimous agreement.
It's definitely positive news that the price of Cedar is on a downward trend. This is beneficial for lowering the price of joinery and keeping it affordable. Hopefully, this trend continues. It’s unfortunate that the prices of hardware and other materials are still on the rise, largely due to inflation. It would be great to see some stability or even a downward trend in those areas as well, but for now, it seems like it's an ongoing struggle to manage costs effectively.
It's encouraging that the window and door sector is maintaining a steady flow of work, even if it’s not at the same volume as before. It’s a positive sign that joiners remain busy. On the other hand, it's concerning to hear about the kitchen sector's challenges, where the inconsistency in work is leading to tough decisions like reducing staffing. The shopfitting sector seems to be experiencing a mixed situation. While some companies are thriving and staying busy with projects like the Manawa Bay Shopping Centre, it's disheartening to hear that others are facing significant challenges, even to the point of closing down. This contrast reflects the unpredictability in the industry, where opportunities can be abundant for some while others struggle to keep their doors open. Saying that it’s positive to hear that inquiries are on the rise across all joinery sectors, signaling a positive shift in demand. This
increase in interest, coupled with similar feedback from larger timber and hardware suppliers, suggests that the industry might be heading towards a more stable and prosperous period. It’s encouraging to see these positive indicators after the challenges faced by various sectors, and hopefully, this trend continues to bring more opportunities and growth.
Looking forward to our next Master Joiners meeting in September, hosted by our associate member ITI Timspec in their well-appointed showroom.Rob Pickup
The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to appear, there seems to be a bit more positivity around, most are seeing an increase in sales and forward workload are starting to build up, maybe with the movement in interest rates and customers being a little more comfortable with spending money again. The general consensus is that we are still 6-12 months away from a good solid workflow again. Finding staff is still proving to be difficult, especially skilled / specialised staff, members are advertising but finding little results, albeit with businesses a lot quieter however many are holding onto staff in prep / eagerness for the workload to change.
Health & Safety wise, worksafe are still very active and focusing more and more on air contamination, this is especially the case around dust and silica, we all need to do our best to limit the effects this has on our staff and customers. Monthly meetings are going well and we have a couple new members on board too.
In Canterbury we are looking forward to our Regional awards coming up at the end of August, this will be a great warmup to our national awards in September. -
Nathan Moore
I want to start my report off by saying a huge thank you to the members in the Central Region. This year has seen member engagement at it’s best in the five years that I have been involved. I put a call out to members to ask them how things were going so that I could form a factual report (not just my opinion), and I was blown away with the responses I got back.
Central members are busy. Most have a steady stream of work ahead of them, with some reporting that they are at capacity and have work booked well ahead of them. Enquires are still there but you are having to work a little harder to secure jobs. There was a comment from a member that they have heard of out of region businesses competing for work in our region, which shows that other regions might not be faring as well as Central. Staff still seems to be a bit of a sticking point. Trying to find entry level staff with enough enthusiasm to stick out the hard yards while learning is proving to be difficult. Finding qualified staff is near impossible. Making sure you keep your existing staff is key! It’s a mixed bag from the members on new builds. Some members are seeing a steady flow still coming through the doors, while others feel that it has slowed down. I personally feel that enquiry with builders is growing again, and people are starting to spend money.
There was no issue with supply reported. Everyone is happy with current supply partners and how they are being looked after. One member reported that the price of materials and selling those materials to the end user is an ongoing and growing challenge. Customers are wanting quality, but they are not wanting to pay for it.
I’m personally really looking forward to Conference in September. I cannot wait to be
back in a room with like minded people and sharing knowledge. Don’t be shy, come and say hi and introduce yourself to me.Kristine Holmes
Hawkes Bay joinery industry seems to be steady at the moment. Overall enquires are down from previous months, and work loads are more manageable. A welcome relief after such a long busy period. The current outlook is good through till Christmas for most and we hope it continues into the new year. - Robin Holthusen
Many of the members in our region have noticed ever decreasing order books since the beginning of 2024. Customers are taking longer to decide while they are also shopping around for multiple quotes. Manufacturers are having to reduce margins just to win enough work to fill factories. There are a few with enough forward work but most have heavily reduced order books, On the up side we have all seen an increase in enquiries and activity towards the end of July. Hopefully all the talk of reducing interest rates pushes through enough to give our customers the confident to proceed with their projects.
In June the Nelson Marlborough branch had a very informative presentation from Josie on the dangers of dust in our workshops and how we can make our workshops safer and healthier for our staff. Some great information was presented and discussed. The healthier and safer we can make our factories the better it is for all. The new guidelines to reduce dust contaminants to 1 mg/m3 or less is going to be challenging to achieve but to do nothing is no longer an option. Thanks to Josie from Hemisphere health. - Paul Rusbatch
It’s only 19 weeks until Christmas, seems quite insane saying that!!
Gosh, I think we’ve all been hibernating a little for the winter months, I hope everyone is surviving the cold weather?
It still seems to be a mixed bag down here with workload and quoting but it’s definitely better than it was. Commercial consents are up with new enquiries supporting this so there are plenty of opportunities around that. While new residential builds are still slower, there seems to be an increase in renovation projects giving us all the chance to engage with home owners to create and refresh their dream spaces. It’s always nice getting to use the imagination to create something within existing boundaries.
We held our first online general regional meeting last month, it had a poor attendance but we’re going to try it again with the link going out a couple of times in the week prior. The hope is that less travelling and time away from work/home means more members will attend and have their say within their industry. Fingers crossed!
In just over 6 weeks we will all be together for the conference in Christchurch!! There are great speakers and content, there’ll be a take away for everyone that you can then put into practise in your own work place. If you haven’t already, go to the Master Joiners website, check out the details and register so you don’t miss out. It’ll be well worth your time.
While you’re on the website have a scan over the huge amount of resources available to you, the number of these is increasing steadily and add value to your membership, don’t let them go to waste.
That’s all for now so I’ll leave you in peace and look forward to seeing you all at conference soon.
- Kate Rule-Munro
Well, it’s that time of year again, to write another August Quarterly Report. This quarter has flown past, and we are now into the second half of the year.
Like most regions Taranaki, is feeling the pinch of a lack of work. Most members have reported that business is slow and are basically working from week to week. Inquiries have generally picked up over the last couple of months with people looking at projects for later in the year, so that has some feeling more confident about the next wee while.
Things must be slow with a lot more reps calling on us trying to get business.
While things are quieter its a good time to look at processes within the factory to improve efficiencies. Having a good clean up in the factory and sorting rubbish which in turn makes more room. Good time to look at the office process and get them streamlined more. Health and Safety Policies are also good ones to review and update, as things are changing so fast, it’s so good to find out what changes are needed and get them all updated.
General materials are readily available with most supplies being sent out smartly. There seem to be a lot of deals going on especially on hardware so, I am picking most have too much stock and trying to shift it in this slow market.
Staff levels are generally good with most joinery companies holding onto their good joiners. So roll on Summer, to nice long days and good weather. Let’s hope for more sunny days as we head into Spring. Be kind and stay safe.
- Bryan Frank
Members are a resilient bunch and are continuously adapting to the current economic climate. We are continuing to experience a flattening of the group Builder
residential market which has put pressure on some of our Members. Diversification of services has helped to fill the gap until that market picks up again. The high and low end of the residential market seems to be steady.
Commercial has remained steady, although not spectacular. There have been ever increasing lead times between quoting and acceptance, particularly when it is a government customer for the work. Hospitals, schools and public housing have remained steady as they are usually longer term projects, that would have kicked off planning 2-5 years ago. Smaller commercial refits have been steady, and new commercial and industrial builds with their long lead times for consenting have not really slowed down.
A recent Member meeting in Tauranga was hosted by Fosters Construction. They shared some great insight into how the Tender process really works with good discussion around the importance of relationships between Main Contractor and sub Contractors to ensure Tenders are not only won, but also completed on time and on budget.
It is pleasing to hear some Members sharing their resources to fill labour gaps when they are a bit quiet. The last thing we want to see is well trained Cabinetmakers and Joiners leaving the industry through this period. This is a great example of the benefits of being a Member of the Master Joiner network.
Our 2024 Interns have now completed their work placements and will be acknowledged at our Annual Awards evening. This has been a very positive programme which we will be offering to schools again next year. It is a great way to expose our trade as an option in a handson way. Employer Members that are involved can be part of a well vetted pipeline of future
Apprentices. Please register your interest in our 2025 Internship programme by calling me on 022 488 6800.
Our Annual Awards this year will recognise the top Apprentice talent in the region, as judged by the WINTEC Tutor Team. We will also acknowledge new Members and Retiring Members. An evening for us all to celebrate the successes of our region. A huge thanks to our Sponsors who make this event a reality for us. - Cherie van der Poel
Workload - Out of the firms that have emailed back, all are busy / Steady at present and for the next few months.
Staff - Two firms have reported that they have taken on new staff members while all others have the same staffing levels, one has lost a couple with one moving home to England and one moving to another firm
Material - No one has any issues with materials; however, one or two have mentioned they are still seeing some price rises and some are slow arriving so need to be more organized.
Finances - Everyone is reporting that they are up to date and no issues.
General - Work levels are still good with most firms still busy, some are reporting that new builds have slowed considerably and are hoping that interest rate drops and tax cuts will get people interested in building again – time will tell.

The STANLEY ® FATMAX ® TradeLift ™ is a heavy-duty tool engineered for a wide range of lifting, levelling, holding and fitting applications.
The powerful TradeLift delivers 150kg lifting force, allowing users to manoeuvre large and heavy items when working alone – and is the ideal helping hand for kitchen, floor, door and window fitting, carpentry, joinery, drywall installation, general construction work and much more.
Designed with maximum safety in mind, the TradeLift incorporates a reinforced push down lever that can be operated by foot, enabling users to apply pressure to the handle for easier lifting of heavy loads compared to a traditional trigger-style mechanism. It also includes a recessed full release button to avoid accidental activation of the full release.
In addition, the TradeLift features 220mm of total lifting capacity and is equipped with a fine adjuster, which lowers the lift plate by up to 2.5mm per toggle – allowing exact adjustments when levelling the workpiece. An angled edge on the base ensures the tool can slide effortlessly underneath low objects. For maximum stability, STANLEY has integrated four countersunk screw holes, permitting users to anchor the lift down securely, and has incorporated a large-sized base plate to help avoid the risk of tipping.
Robust and resilient, this versatile tool features an enclosed metal plate housing, delivering added durability and preventing dust and debris from entering the tool. Furthermore, an ergonomicallydesigned overmoulded handle affords maximum grip, comfort and control.
Hamish Gur, Australian and New Zeland Product Manager for STANLEY, said, “We have identified demand for a safe, fully-featured lifting tool that professionals can depend on completely. The innovative STANLEY FATMAX TradeLift combines intuitive release controls and ergonomic design with solid, reliable construction and secure, strong and stable base plates.
