Welcome and Goodbye

I

t is with a very heavy heart that we must start by saying this will be our last print issue for the foreseeable future. We have to admit it has not been easy as we battled the last year to bring you this free circulated parenting book, we hoped to aid those in need if they found they were struggling or to be a small distraction from the world around us. We wanted to be right there with you even in the bad times as you have been for us in the good times. However the truth is that as a free publication, although well supported, it has just not been enough to see us through to be able to continue with a print product. We understand that many businesses have had to close which in turn has put a strain on our projections to sustain our free parental resource. It is a very tricky and sad circumstance we find ourselves in as we seem to be coming out of this last year of uncertainty into a world of hope. Sadly, it now seems a tangable product is considered a risk to individuals and therefore up take to distribute has dwindled. As you can imagine this is the success to our print offering. There is still hope however! We shall now be focusing our services online. Our online offering is full of parenting articles, local news, school updates and our most popular page, the event listings, which will be filling up as the summer sees the opening of its hospitality, theatre and shows. Please join us online and subscribe to keep connected at countrychild.co.uk So for our last issue what have we been working on? It will come as no surprise that the focus this summer is on holidays! We are all desperate for some time away from our own four walls, be it staycation or abroad and we have the lastest in holiday advice for how to book and what to consider from local company The Holiday Fixer. Turn to page 23 to get your holiday plans in check. If your plans are to stay UK based then flick over to pages 10 to 13 to be safe on our shoreline. Last year's indian summer saw families flock to the coast, so take a look at the charity Royal

National Lifeboat Institution, who advise us on how families can stay safe on the beach whatever the weather. So many times families have enjoyed your typical British vacation but it is not always a smooth as one would hope for. Charlotte Blake shares one of her statirical experiences about a trip to the seaside on page 7. Don't forget on the 20th June we can celebrate Father's Day is style! So check out our fab Father's Day finds on page 9. Perhaps you could plan in a big family do after the lockdown lifts and really go to town? So get ready by checking out our family reunion table ideas on page 29. Cannot wait! There is always our focus on schools and business news towards the back and we have been able to share some great steadfast festivals which return with a bang. So head to page 21 to see what's running and remember to head online for more too! It has been a wonderful last 11 years in print but all good things do unfortunately come to an end. We'd like to thank all our loyal customers, readers, contributors, associates and distributors - without you we would not have reached double digits. Please do however come and join us online! For now be safe and see you on the web!

Family Ramblings... Written by Charlotte Blake

W

e are one hour into a three hour journey and ping! My mind tells me that I do not remember packing the pump for the blow up raft. "Don't worry I packed it!" Dad says confidently. So reassured, I sit back and relax into the rest of the journey. This is of course after I stop recounting my steps to ensure that we did not forget anything. Even with a quick return to the house to grab the bucket and spade and double check the back door was locked for what must be the hundreth time! The holiday has now officially begun. We arrive safely and quickly settle into our nest for the next seven days. True to English weather form, we map out which days to do what and where, plus we manage to dodge good and bad weather days. The honourary beach day arrives, the sun is shining between some cloudy spells and we orchestrate a picnic, all wrapped up and lovingly packed next to my new best friend... The flask! It's at a certain age this perky insulated BFF comes into play. Even more so when you replace the hot

stuff with bubbles or beer! After two round trips of the town and beach car park stake outs, we finally and to be honest, covertly stalk a poor family about to leave, smugly park up and headed for the sands. "Well done kids, you're doing really well with all that stuff." Both children look up as they drag oars, grass matt and pop up tent, to give me, yes me, the reassuring smile that it's all OK. #heartemoji After bumping our bountiful bags down what feels like hundreds of steps we settle, socially distanced of course on the beach. Pop goes the tent, bang goes the hammer on the wind break and a whoosh of air does not go into the raft. "Where is the pump!" asks Dad about to have a full on paddy. "I don't know dear, you said you packed it." I say calmly but now with a slight twitch, I continue to set up camp. Carrying on regardless I wrestle little arms and legs into wetsuits and life jackets, to see Daddy scratching his head saying "I can't find it..." "Can't find what dear?" I say.

"The pump!" said Dad more than frustrated and turning a lighter shade of rouge. Soon he reluctantly resigns himself to popping to the shop to buy another. In his absence, sandcastles form with a moat and bridge. Salvaged shells, stones and crab skeleton adorn the turrets and entrance. A most gallant effort! "Got one!" Dad exclaims proudly after being gone a good hour. "I had to go right to the top of town you know." "Great, well done!" I say along with a rolled eye or two. "How many do we have now?" "Just the four." Dad mumbles. At this point I ask myself - 'When do you ever learn from your mistakes?' I quickly realised that you have to celebrate the small victories and make the mistakes, new traditions. Here's to many more with a future in a new collection of pumps! Charlotte Blake is a new writer on the scene, a frazzled mum of two children, her dog is her best friend and her husband is the biggest kid on the block. Which can all make for one thing - many funny but also moving memories to share.

Beach Safety

We asked the one of the UK's national service providers, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, to advise us on how families can stay safe on the beach this summer.

W

ith many families set on a UK staycation this year, it is only expected that beaches will be a hotspot destination for most people to flock to. After all the beach is an ideal place for some well needed, relaxation and fun for all the family. However all that fun and frolicking can be hugely compromised, to turn very sour, very quickly should we not follow some standard rules and regulations set out by the RNLI. The RNLI recommend looking at the Met office app or website to find local tide times and weather forecasts before you set off for your visit to the beach. Lifeguards will also put a board of information next to their huts that will give you information on the weather for the day. This advice applies for any activities that happen at the beach, including water sport activities such as paddleboarding or bodyboarding.

10

Beach Activities Stand-up Paddleboarding has increased in popularity significantly over the past year as more and more families have been holidaying in the UK instead of going abroad. A fun beach activity, paddleboarding can be enjoyed by the whole family but it comes with its risks. In 2020, RNLI volunteer crews witnessed a huge increase in call-outs to paddleboarders in difficulty. Here are some simple tips to help you keep safe whilst paddleboarding:  Bringing your phone to take some photos? Make sure you keep it in a waterproof pouch. That way it won’t get wet, and you can use it to call for help in an emergency too.

it keep you afloat, but it will also help give you time to recover should you fall in – and chances are you will!  You should always use a paddleboard with a leash. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to swim after your paddleboard if you fall off. The leash will also help you stay connected to your board if you get into trouble and help you float.

 Check the weather forecast and tide times before you set out. If the water is too choppy, you might find it difficult, especially if you are a beginner. But be aware, the conditions can change quickly.

 If you are launching on a lifeguarded beach, make sure you launch and recover between the black and white chequered flags. There should be less swimmers in this area, giving you more room to manoeuvre. Consider other water users by learning the rights of way in the surf. This can save you and others getting injured.

 Avoid offshore winds. They will quickly blow your paddleboard far out to sea, which can make it extremely tiring and difficult to paddle back to shore.

G et the appropriate level of training. You might be tempted to just buy a board and head out. Having a few training sessions can teach you the right technique, so it’s more stand-up and less fall-in paddleboarding.

 You should wear a suitable personal flotation device. This can be a buoyancy aid or a lifejacket. Choose one that still allows you plenty of movement so you can paddle freely. Not only will

Talking to your children about staying safe at the beach Even if you and your family don’t live near any seas, rivers or canals, water safety is incredibly important; particularly as children start to become more independent. The water can be unpredictable so instilling healthy respect for safety when near the coast is vital. To get started, watch the RNLI's short Water Safety Education Video and share key safety advice with them in the run up to a trip to the coast.

The RNLI’s Youth Education homepage has plenty of teaching resources and activities for children of all ages. Have a look through the resources and whenever you can, relate the lessons to the real environment e.g. a beach you visit regularly. When Covid-19 restrictions allow, the RNLI’s Water Safety Volunteers and lifeguards visit schools and clubs to speak to children about staying safe at the beach. However, like everything else, these workshops are now virtual! Your school or club can invite their volunteers for a workshop.

Swim Safe with Free Swimming How can you support the Lessons RNLI? Swim Safe is a free, fun outdoor swimming session with fully qualified lifeguards and swimming instructors at select coastal and inland locations across the UK. Many children love to swim – but swimming in the sea, rivers and lakes is very different to swimming in a pool. Swim Safe is a communityfocused programme that gives children aged 7–14 an opportunity to learn how to be safe in and around open water. The practical sessions are designed to help young people who can already swim 25m unaided, which improves their swimming ability and feel more confident in the water. There are public sessions and sessions specially designed for schools. To find out more, visit swimsafe.org.uk

12

If you want to keep the children entertained whilst also supporting a lifesaving charity, consider signing up for a Storm Force membership. For just £12 a year, your child will receive four issues of the Storm Force magazine, online access to their Crew Room with great activities and rescue videos plus a membership pack with crew bag, pencil case, stickers and more. You can join the Storm Force team by visiting their website and they have plenty of ideas and resources for those who would like to fundraise. You can also make a donation at RNLI.org/GoDonate.

Water Safety

T

his year the Drowning Prevention Week which is the national campaign run by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, aims to cut down the number of accidental drownings that occur each year and support families affected by drowning. The next campaign will run from 19th to 26th June and teams up with the RNLI to issue their Water Safety Code: “The Water Safety Code is not about laying down the law and restricting people’s fun,” explains Mike Dunn, RLSS UK Deputy Director of Education and Research. “Traditionally, the summer months have the highest incidences of drowning, as people seek quick, easy ways to cool off and have a good time in the water. The Water Safety Code is just a few simple, easy to remember steps that will help keep you, your friends and your family safe around water this year. RLSS UK believe that an accidental drowning is a tragic yet preventable loss of life. We’d like to encourage people to spread the Water Safety Code so everyone can enjoy the water safely.”

Other things to consider: Be your family’s lifeguard

Whether there are lifeguards at your resort or not, you can keep a closer eye on your family than anyone else. Make sure no-one in your family swims alone, and watch everybody like their lives depend on it (because they do). Also, try to choose a holiday company that provides lifeguarded facilities.

Keep children safe

As well as keeping children under constant supervision, make sure that they wear their swimming/safety aid all the time when they are around the water. To stop them wriggling out of it at every opportunity, choose an aid which doesn’t restrict their movement and that they are happy/ comfortable wearing in the water and on land (such as a SwimFin).

Swim now, drink later

Don’t mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol is a factor in 20% of drownings in the UK. Look out for more tips and courses as part of RLSS UK’s Drowning Prevention Week, which runs this year from 19 - 26 June. Find out more at rlss.org. uk/dpw or call 0300 323 0096

Always follow the WATER safety code

Help to spread the summer water safety message! Drowning accidents are always especially high in the summer months and over the last few years we have heard of too many tragedies that could have been avoided. Every year people drown both at home and on holiday because they don’t take simple

precautions, so reaching people with water safety messages is vital. We want people to enjoy the water safely. Please help to avoid another tragic summer this year by spreading the following water safety advice far and wide:

Whenever you are around water:

LOOK OUT FOR LIFEGUARDS

IT’S COLDER THAN IT LOOKS

DON’T GO TOO FAR

If you’re looking for a place to cool off, always find a lifeguarded swimming site

Water at open and inland sites is often much colder than it looks, cold water can affect your ability to swim and self-rescue

Always swim parallel to the shore, that way you’re never too far away from it

STOP AND THINK

Look for the dangers. Always read the signs.

STAY TOGETHER

Never swim alone. Always go with friends or family. Only swim where there is a lifeguard.

In an emergency:

IT’S STRONGER THAN IT LOOKS

BRING A FRIEND

Currents in the water can be very strong. If you find yourself caught in a current – don’t swim against it – you’ll tire yourself out. Stay calm, swim with the current and call for help

Always bring a friend when you go swimming so if anything goes wrong, you’ve got someone there to help

CALL 999 OR 112

Shout for help and phone 999 or 112.

Float

If you fall in, float or swim on your back. Throw something that floats to anyone who has fallen in the water.

The Psychology of Colour Country Child asked mindfulness colouring enthusiasts Doodle & Calm about the psychology of colour and why it is so important to mental wellbeing.

Pioneer of Abstract Art Wassily Kandinski.

A

s the UK adjusts to change and upheaval caused by the coronavirus, it is unsurprising so many of us are turning to art and the practice of mindfulness colouring to help achieve a sense of focus in both children and adults. But just what is it about colour that affects our moods and emotions? Colour has a direct link to the way we feel and the way we interpret the world. We may not realise it but there are a number of stereotypical associations we make when it comes to colour that are universal. For example, red is often linked to passion and anger, while yellow symbolises happiness and warmth. Colour psychology is the study of the effect colours have on the brain and the neurological responses our brain has to certain colours. When the late US fashion designer and entrepreneur Lily Pulitzer, famous for her brightly-coloured floral prints, said, ‘I am a believer that colour affects people’s moods’ she was highly likely to be right.

Colour and the unconscious mind While there’s not a great deal of science into the psychology of colour, there are some studies that show it can indeed affect the way we feel, whether we are consciously aware of it or not. The brain makes subconscious links to colour that have a direct effect on our mood and perception of the world. If our bedroom is painted in a garish shade of green, it is unlikely we will feel calm or serene. Replace this shade with a more muted sage or olive colour, and our emotions will respond accordingly. There is a reason why colour experts are so regularly called on to contribute to interior design projects. This subconscious reaction to colour can be seen in

16

Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.

many modern world situations that we may not even be aware of. For example, colour’s role in placebo pills. Pills packaged in warm colours are believed to have a better outcome than plain, white ones; and the brighter the colour, the better the effect. The placement and use of colour is also a calculated part of the infrastructure that surrounds us where anecdotally it’s been found cool-toned streetlamps lead to reduced crime rates.

Colour as a form of therapy Furthermore, in certain types of therapy, colour is used to elicit specific responses in patients. Chromotherapy, or colourology, as it is known, is used as a holistic and alternative treatment to Western medicines. Red is believed to promote circulation and stimulates the body and mind, blue is used to soothe pain, yellow is thought to stimulate the nerves and senses, and orange is used to heal the lungs. There are strong hypotheses surrounding colour psychology but a lack of empirical evidence to back them up. Until science can demonstrate exactly what is happening inside the brain when it associates a colour with a feeling, we are left with one undisputed fact: colour has played an active role in our lives for as long as we can remember and will likely continue to do so for some time yet. Doodle and Calm offer colouring walls to help unplug children to calm busy minds. All posters come in three different sizes, include colouring pens and are wipe clean for forever useage. Check out doodleandcalm.com to order your mindfulness colouring wall for your family today.

lzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day is back for its sixth year running, so it’s time to heat up your ovens, grab the over ripe bananas and get involved on the 17 June! 2020 has seen a huge rise in baking. With more time being spent at home, lots of us have been practicing our tray bakes and lemon drizzles to perfection. It’s now time to put those efforts to good use. Whether you organise a delivery ‘drop off’ of goodies to your neighbours, host a driveway bake sale in your area or have a virtual ‘bake-off’ with colleagues, friends, and family, you will be helping to raise money to support the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. By dusting off your pastry-stained cookbook and getting involved in Cupcake Day, you will be helping the charity reach more people through their

vital support services, like the Dementia Connect support line. Their services have been used nearly 3 million times since March and have been a lifeline to thousands, but there are so many more who urgently need their help. People affected by dementia have been left severely impacted by coronavirus and never needed help more. As well as people with the condition being the worst hit in terms of deaths, they hear daily from people who are seeing their symptoms increase, mental health decline and family carers in complete despair. So whether you’re a piping queen or baking newbie, we are encouraging everyone to have a go and raise vital 'dough-nations' for this fantastic cause. Holiday Help! Coming in and out of lockdowns can make for difficult holiday choices, we spoke to The Holiday Fixer to clear up some of the uncertainty

M

emories, whether good or bad, evolve into stories which over time become interwoven into the fabric of our lives. The shared experiences and adventures that help create these memories are also great for building and bonding our relationships. Holidays are the perfect example, lots of wonderful shared adventures in all sorts of different places which giving us those precious happy and long lasting memories. Sadly Covid 19 has prevented us holidaying anywhere but thankfully life is gradually returning to normal so we can now look to the future and start making travel plans again. Local family holiday specialist, Gemma Perry aka The Holiday Fixer, advises going to a reputable travel agent who is a member of both ATOL and ABTA to ensure the holiday you book is properly protected. With the situation around the world being so uncertain and constantly changing tapping into the expertise of a travel agent is probably more important than ever. Travel agents are constantly monitoring the situation and being kept up-to-date with the latest information. Also booking a package holiday will guarantee you are properly covered for all eventualities

and you won’t run the risk of losing your hard earned money. The good news is that we should be able to travel overseas later this summer but what we will need to do to visit our chosen destination will be dependent on the new traffic light system which will be listing countries as green, amber or red with different requirements applying according to the category. Keeping an eye on the guidelines outlined on the official FCDO (The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) website will be essential over the coming months. Gemma says, “Availability for holidays for 2022 is already becoming limited and booking now for next year is definitely advisable especially if you want to take advantage of some the great offers currently available.” As surprising as that may sound, the low availability is due in part to the large number of people who have had to move their holidays which, of course, has had a knock-on effect. In response to the high level of demand some resorts are even taking bookings for 2023. That said, Gemma is convinced that 2022 will see a lot more of the world opening up giving us not only a wider choice of destinations to choose from but also more certainty.

Having not been able to spend money on going out over the past year The Holiday Fixer is finding their customers are wanting to splash out on more expensive locations. Also they are getting a substantial increase in enquiries and bookings for activity and adventure holidays. Many are looking beyond Europe to places like Africa, the Far East, the Maldives, the Caribbean as well as the US and Canada. For anyone who can’t wait until next year to escape the UK to go on holiday, bookings for later this year are also on the rise with some great deals to be had. European destinations that should be a safe bet include The Canaries, Croatia, Greece, Malta and Portugal. Further away countries like Costa Rica, Martinique, Tahiti and Georgia have had very low numbers of covid cases and are looking forward to welcoming visitors. It is lovely to think that hopefully by the end of 2022 most restrictions will have been lifted and that we can all get back to exploring new places and holidaying wherever takes our fancy. In the meantime, we need to be sensible, stick to the rules and take advice from travel specialists like Gemma who can be contacted at theholidayfixer.com

The Great Outdoors Nature writer Jeni Bell introduces these winged wonders

t’s hard to picture a summer garden scene without the presence of a butterfly or two. These ornate insects with their fluttering flight and exquisite wing patterns make a welcome addition to any patch. Being relatively easy to spot and with an exciting array of colours, butterflies are a great way to introduce the family to nature. Especially the wildlife close to our homes. With around 60 species of butterfly in the UK, getting to know them can be a daunting task, but there are a few common species which make a great introduction to these winged wonders:

Children are our future - Overleaf award-winning orthodontist Dr Chaw-Su Kyi offers advice on how to help ensure it’s a healthy one... 29

I

Dr Kyi shares some simple ways to help give children the best start in oral hygiene life

t has been a testing time for us all of late, and children in particular have had their lives hugely disrupted by the global events of the past year or so. The day-to-day familiarities of their world were turned upside-down. Homeschooling and classroom ‘bubbles’ suddenly became the ‘new norm’ and precious time spent with friends and family was curtailed in a flash. Children are resilient and some suggest the younger generation are better than adults at adapting to life’s changes. However, as award-winning specialist orthodontist Dr Chaw-Su Kyi, says: “As we emerge from this pandemic, we need time to take stock and reflect on how COVID-19 has had its impact on childhood. It is important we are mindful of what this period of time may have done to the health and wellbeing of our children.” So, how can we ensure the sustainability of happy, healthy children as they grow up? Fundamentally, children’s quality of life lies in their early positive experiences of health and wellbeing – and this includes the nurturing of healthy smiles. “Making sure children have strong teeth is an important part of their development into adulthood. A regular check-up with a dentist plays a key role throughout childhood as it means we can keep a watchful eye for any problems that may have a negative impact on this development, such as decay, overcrowding, gaps or misaligned teeth,” says Dr Kyi.

30

“Shockingly, recent figures show that almost one quarter (23.4%) of five-year-olds in England have had tooth decay. Modern-day science and technology mean we should all be able to enjoy good oral health into adulthood, so there is no reason why children should suffer with decayed teeth and unhealthy gums.” Coincidentally, National Smile Month started last month (17 May-17 June) to promote the importance of good oral health. “For a very short while, children were unable to attend practices for routine check-ups, but dentists are back to normal now. So, if parents haven’t taken their children to the dentist recently, this month is the perfect time to get back into healthy habits,” Dr Kyi advises. “Children’s dentition changes rapidly in the early years, so it is important they visit the dentist regularly. And, if your child is a little nervous of the dentist (unsurprising as we are now wearing full PPE masks, gowns and goggles), then talk time to talk to them about what to expect and explain how what we are wearing is there to protect us and them, like firefighters for example. Also, visit the practice website so they can see the faces behind the PPE before they attend.” Opposite, Dr Kyi shares some simple ways to help give children the best start in life. By looking after their teeth and gums, we can ensure a healthy smile for many years to come.

 Give them an early start: Baby teeth DO matter, so don’t be fooled into thinking their first teeth are “going to fall out anyway”. Brush their first teeth as soon as they start to appear and continue to supervise children’s toothbrushing as they get older – at least until they are seven years old. Take your baby to see the dentist as soon as their first teeth appear, or on their first birthday – whichever comes first. Take children to the dentist twice a year for a professional oral examination. The earlier the better for both.  Think about the rule of two: Encourage children to brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day with a pea-sized smear of fluoride-containing toothpaste (this protects teeth from decay and erosion).  Make toothbrushing fun. Use a timer, a connected electric toothbrush or one of the number of apps available to count down those two minutes. It can seem a long time for adults let alone children! Some come with musical entertainment, or coaching tips to help children hone their toothbrushing skills early on. Don’t be afraid to reward with stickers and charts – just avoid giving them sugary treats as an acknowledgment of their achievements.  Make it a family event. Children are great mimics and enjoy copying their role models, such as mum and dad or even an older brother or sister. Let them learn with you rather than from you. Who knows, it may even help you improve your brushing skills?  Eat and drink to better oral health. Encourage

children from an early age to enjoy a well-balanced diet. Make their meals colourful, explain why certain foods are good for their teeth and others less so and so on. Get them involved in meal preparation as they get older, too. Try to avoid having sugary or starchy snacks in the house – or at least limit these to mealtimes to avoid children grazing, which stops teeth having time to recover from the constant acid attack.  Gently curb habits - try and encourage your child to give up thumb and finger sucking as early as you can as the longer it continues the harder it is to stop. Reward success with a star chart rather and offer them another means of comfort. As an orthodontist I see so many children who have misaligned teeth because of their thumb sucking habit.  Explain the science. Home schooling has made teachers of us all, so why not give your children a lesson or two in how to look after their oral health? Explain what cavities are, why certain foods are bad for teeth, the mechanics of good toothbrushing (in between as well as on the surfaces) and talk about the part fluoride has to play in protecting the tooth enamel. There are some brilliant resources for parents and caregivers on the Smile Month website here dentalhealth.org/national-smile-month. Puzzling Praise

L

ast July, Wentworth Wooden Puzzles based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire released an exclusive jigsaw puzzle, to say ‘Thank You’ to NHS Staff and all the other key workers for their essential work during the Coronavirus crisis. The aim was to raise £3,000 to donate to their local charity, the Wiltshire Community Foundation’s Coronavirus Response Fund. However, the puzzle received such an overwhelming response from customers, that far exceeded anyone’s expectations, it sold out in all three sizes and raise over £12,000 - over four times the initial target. Sarah Watson, Managing Director of Wentworth Puzzles comments: “We are delighted with this result, and would like to thank everyone who purchased our ‘Say Thank You with a Rainbow’ charity puzzle last year. Whilst we hoped this puzzle would be popular,

more than 50 countries, its top five markets are USA, Australia, Denmark, Canada and China. Percussion Play creates a wide range of harmonised ensembles in various landscapes all over the world across residential, commercial and urban projects.

we did not expect the fantastic response that we had from our customers. With the added proceeds, we have decided to increase the amount donated to the Wiltshire Community Foundation, as well as make two additional £4,000 voluntary donations to other charities close to the business’s heart and cause, Mind and Dementia UK, and the remainder going to the Cotswold Home for Cats and Dogs. Creating the fundraising jigsaw puzzle and being able to invest the resulting donations back to crucial charity work, highlight the importance to Wentworth of the role that jigsaw puzzles have played by providing entertainment and a mindful pastime, throughout the pandemic." Wentworth chose Mind and Dementia UK as their additional charities to donate to, as supporting mental health and wellbeing at a time when people need it most was very much close to their hearts. The exclusive and bespoke artwork for this puzzle, which Wentworth had specially commissioned, was created by popular British artist, Julia Rigby. The colourful puzzle image evokes a bright and hopeful community feel, and the signature whimsy pieces of the puzzle reflected new symbols of the pandemic, such as a facemask, washing hands, a heart and a rainbow. Deputy Delights

A

leading independent prep school in Hampshire has appointed a new deputy headteacher. Mr Andy Baker will begin his new role at Highfield School in Liphook in September, replacing Alex Kingsbury. Mr Baker is no stranger to Highfield as he is currently Head of Science, Head of Boarding (Strategic), and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. He will relinquish his science and boarding roles at the start of the autumn term while replacing Mrs Kingsbury as the respected co-ed school’s Dedicated Safeguarding Lead A graduate of Warwick University, Mr Baker joined Highfield in September 2017 after a series of high-profile roles within the prep-school sector. Having secured a first-class honours degree with qualified teacher status in education studies with biology, Mr Baker began his career as a science teacher at Caldicott School in Slough, Berkshire, before taking over as Head of Science at Hazlegrove School in Yeovil, Somerset, where he combined teaching with the roles of House Master and Head of Year 8. From there, Mr Baker moved to Ashdown House, where he was Head of Science and Senior Boarding Tutor, and onto Old Buckenham Hall in Brettenham, Suffolk, via a brief return as Head of Boarding at Caldicott. But an overwhelming desire to return to the classroom, and to a school with a thriving boarding community, saw him join Highfield as Head of Science and Boys’ House Master in September 2017. Highfield headmaster Phillip Evitt said Mr Baker led the school’s science department “with such distinction” over the past few years. Mr Evitt said: “It is our very good fortune in having someone of his character, ability and extensive prep school experience to assume his new responsibilities from September. His in-depth knowledge of Highfield and the broader Highfield and Brookham community will also undoubtedly prove invaluable. I have every confidence that Andy will do an outstanding job and play a central role in helping to shape Highfield’s future as we hopefully emerge from all that we have endured over the past months.”

Captain Tom 100!

M

illfield Prep School pupils took part in the Captain Tom 100 challenge, raising £1,250 for YoungMinds. Pupils from Millfield Pre-Prep School through to Year 8 took part in a variety of 100 themed challenges over the Bank Holiday weekend, encouraged by the late Sir Captain Tom Moore’s inspiring 100 laps of his garden in aid of the NHS, aged 99. Years 7 and 8 ran 100 laps of the running track and 100 x 100m sprints in their tutor groups and continued their challenges into the weekend, including eating 100 items of food, writing 100 positive messages and completing 100 maths questions. The catering team even treated everyone to Captain Tom cookies! The youngest members of the community kicked started the challenges with Millfield Pre-Prep pupils each jumping, clapping, high kicking and showing their jazz hands 100 times. Donations from the event go towards YoungMinds who work closely with children who are struggling with their mental health.
