Mission
STORY+DESIGN strives to create a narrative through design that is formed with users and the site that the architecture itself contains the ambience of the surrounding in different scales. From an intimate scale where one interacts with one’s chair to a vast scale, where in an urban context, buildings form a story who physically speaks to the city and to the people. We approach the design process through conceptual analysis of the existing that proceeds into spatial and three dimensional spaces that considers the narratives of the users, having delicate considerations of the materiality and connections that solidifies the concept. Our notion in design does not lie only in architecture, but in small scaled designs like books, and furniture that also has their own persona.

THE PERGOLA This project was highly focused on how we can deal with limited budget and existing condition of its space and structure. In order to proceed the project with great success, we aimed three main goals which are ‘Re-cycle’ its existing material, ‘Re-use’ its footing and ‘Reframing’ its own spatial condition better. The existing condition of “The Pergola” was a great place to rest for people to interact. So we tried to keep its own atmosphere and to enhance its character. This design not only renovated the old structure, but solved the problem of connection with the street.

PAPADISH As a self-employment project, a very limited construction cost was provided. In order to deal with many issues and problems with given budget, utilization of existing elements was a key strategy for this project. Through the renovation, stronger interaction between the workers and customers was generated. As the chef being displayed, an enjoyable theatre-like atmosphere arised in the restautant.

BOAT HOUSE As if on the way to a place with beautiful flowers appearing to shine next to a tree, With the scent of fresh bread flowing through the air inducing a feeling of satiation. Like the church over the bridge across the river. It can always be looked at, seeming to be waiting for my peace. An afternoon with leaves falling, A father who is pushing his daughter on a swing. A place able to turn coldness to warmth. Here is it for your all. One place that frees you of all the weight and pain of life; that place is here. A place within earshot of your voice. A piece of joy in calmness, to hear the boisterous sounds from children in a playground. Perhaps young in age, a place reminiscent of an older time, resurfacing memories of the past. Within this place, a presence standing over you, protecting you in the journey. A sense of nature approaching, within it, the way for me to go becomes clear. Leaving what feels dear to me for my voyage heading onward. To a place where my Lord always resides. A place where you leave your thoughts behind. The way of going to there is through a clarity of the place as itself. Spread open your thoughts. Unleash your dreams. Put forth your soul.

.......come back!
Meeting: starts today at 3 pm.
How does my new hair look? I bought a coupon from a groupon and got a 30% discount.
Hmm...
!
Conventional conception of a kiosk is underutilized and under-developed
We had a really good time last night! Me and my friend threw a party at our house and...
for just being a vending machine for the people and having no emotional or physical connection for people to remember. So how will a Kiosk connect with the people’s lives and be remembered? City of Chicago is formed with numerous high rises that consolidate to create the form of Thanks a lot!
Chicago. But life is not created by the large scaled buildings, it is constituted with the small things. The small scale interactions that happens in everyday life, for example, saying hello to one’s neighbor, getting coffee in the morning, or walking the dog to the lakefront. This Kiosk will not only serve as a retail, but be part of one’s life that will be imprinted in one’s memory unnoticingly.
Hey Rick, Let’s meet up at 7 today!
Call me ASAP.
I wish I can be a part of the city... No...I’ll never be like them... I’m too small...
I can help you!
HELPER CAGOBEAR THE KIOSK
KIOSK 312
First, I want to be multi-directional.
PUBLIC By providing your corner for the public use, you will get more interaction with people and become a place to stay.
Sounds good! Now I want to be iconic for Chicago.
Much better! But I want to interact with people more.
PURE FORM By turning you into a pure shape of 12x12x12, you will be multi-directional and be more accessible.
ICONIC ART 312 is a historic number of Chicago. Using it as an elevation component, people will remember you easily and you can even function as a iconic sculpture.
Lastly, I want to be part of people’s memory and hold people’s memory.
MEMORY Originated from the historic frame created by the number 312, the void frames will be filled with functions and activities of people. During the winter, they will be removed and act as a public art sculpture.

To sustain the structure all year round and keep its shape, Kiosk 312 is constructed with mainly steel and polycarbonate which are the material that lasts for a long time, especially polycarbonate which is also a sustainable element that is 100% recyclable for multiple times.

Kiosk 312 has a flexibility to be placed to any location along the lakefront. Also, It is very accessible from any direction by designing it as a squared-shape. It will have an effect on surrounding area not only as a commercial but also as a public art.

The purpose of this kiosk is to be recognized and be a routine figure that will be embedded in one’s memory, creating not only a physical interaction but an emotional connection between the kiosk and the people. Existing kiosks are only used for about 4 months out of the year, that are “abandoned” in the off-seasons. Kiosk 312 offers programmatic and physical element that facilitates to solve the dull character of a kiosk. It becomes a public art element that people can interact day and night, existing on site all year round. During the on season, it not only serves as a retail but a public art element as well. The consistent appearance of its physicality will leave traces of imagery in people’s memory.
EAST ELEVATION
EW SECTION
Kiosk 312 contains the symbolic meaning of Chicago, the number “312. This number not only represents Chicago, but it is an unnoticed symbol that everyone uses in their everyday life. Using the number to be the kiosk itself will become a sign, and an advertisement, that will bring out the unconscious representation into a physical being for everyone to see and interact. So the Kiosk 312 becomes the framework to stir new unimplied, and conscious memory over the existing city life.
