This simple box occupies middle of complex form housings. We pursued simplicity and richness the most. Based on clients’ request, there are two outdoor spaces that are visually and physically separated from neighbors and streets. Putting a staircase with three-story tall windows, however, holds the sense of belonging to a neighborhood. The structure system consisted of only an outer shell and 4 columns gives opportunity to change freely inside layout. Work Responsibility Project Management & Construction Administration 2

Daniele Vare said, “Negotiation is the art of letting them have your way.” By communicating with contractor and client via daily reports, quality control and safety during construction leads to conformance to an original design and planning decisions.

Physical Model - Jongyoun Jung | Scale: 1/50

Making models in different scale is asking ourself questions, finding our own answers with finding solutions. It is also one of the most effective ways of communicating with client emotionally and objectively. 3

Weekend House Jaecheon, South Korea 2016 - 2017 Total 177.16 sqm BF: 63.36 / 1F: 61.62 / 2F: 52.18 Wood Construction + Reinforced Concrete

Featuring wood construction covered by zinc panels and wood claddings, the house’s single large gable covers all living spaces. Thanks to its simplicity, restraint and refinement, the project embodies the our attempt to capture the essence of cottage life - wooden home designed for vacations and enabling true communion with nature. Seoul Dream Orthopedic Clinic Seoul, South Korea 2017

The concept of this project focuses on patient or visitors who mainly are seniors. Pure and natrual image would be translated into “White and Wood in terms of materiality. When wood panels and walls painted white meet the natural light, the effect of the scheme is more maximized. Like a pearl necklace, organizing the spaces linearly helps the small space feel larger. “Good design is good business. This area allows to build only three story house according to the regulation. But most owners here illigally add an attic or extend their building. The solution was to stretch the first and third floor not only to match the height of a building with neighbors but also give residents better living space for better life. Advocate Medical Center Oak Lawn, Illinois 2012 Summer Studio

In Evidence Based on Design, E.B.D, there are many ways to design a medical center for not only patients, but also staff, such as making a home-like environment, ease of way finding, getting even natural light into the building, and biophilic design. In the design, in order to accomplish E.B.D, the main concept of the new patient building focuses on communication with users, communication with its neighborhood, and communication with nature.

Into Great Silence Columbus, Indiana 2012 Spring Semester

This project is to design a Roman Catholic Cistercian (Trappist) Monastery for 12 monks, an Abbott, and 120 visitors. It is incredibly strong programmatic nature, and it’s inward focus by keeping with the spirit of the material, and using our newly honed intuitions regarding light and contemplation. Their lives are very simple and repetitive. In order to continuously receive spiritual emotions in such a life, the monastery as a vessel of their lives, must be a place where be enriched by only the essential and the repetitive such as concrete and natural light, and provides various experiences to monks.

Compositional Light and Space from studying Louis Kahn & B.V. Doshi 14

First Floor Plan inspired by the movie, ‘Into Great Silence’: watching it three times to get familiar with the atmosphere of a monastery; Vibrating sound, contrasting light and shadow, temperature of its space and their monotonous life.

Collage, Perspective View at Illustrator Board

“...A collage is a kind of poem, that extracts the essence of what is to be portrayed... - Arthur Takeuchi

Private Art Gallery West Chicago Suburb, Illinois 2013 Spring Semester

A collector of contemporary art (Cubism, to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art) needs a space to exhibit and store the collection. From time to time the owner plans to use the facility to entertain guests that at times may number only a handful and sometimes as many as 30 persons. The facility should also accommodate overnight guests in a comfortable manner. The facility will be a stand-alone annex to the main residence nearby, both suited on a slightly slopping (11% slope NW to SE), lightly wooded typically midwestern site.

Physical Model / Scale: 1’-0”=1/3”

Idea of ‘Space Problem’ understands, Structure as an architectural factor; Space as an architectural problem; Proportion as a means of architectural expression; The expression value of materials; Painting and sculpture in their relationship to architecture.

Study Model | Scale: 1’-0” = 1/8”

Lincoln Park Boat Club Chicago, Illinois 2011 Fall Semester

The aim of the project has reinvigorated a neglected stretch of public land as an active public park for an underserved urban neighborhood. The Lincoln Park Boat Club offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities year round, including learn to row sessions both in tanks and on the river, youth and masters team rowing, ergometer training, and lessons tailored to individuals with disabilities. By providing a publically accessible riverfront, it also reveals the larger movement toward an ecological and recreational revival of the Chicago River.

Analysis of the circulations | Sketch Scale: 1’-0”=1/16” 18

Site Plan | Sketch Scale: 1’-0”=1/16”

After visiting the site at Jacob Park, I was able to read a passionate desire from the village to have a building that, in time, grow naturally into being a part of the form and history of their place.

Final Model | Scale: 1’-0” = 1/8”

The boat house as a social club helps catalyze necessary momentum, providing visual interest while also offering spatial and environmental advantages that allow the boathouse to adapt to Chicago’s distinctive seasonal changes. 19

Guggenheim in Helsinki Helsinki, Finland 2012 Fall Semester at Paris Studio

This project needs a good understanding of how the city works and demonstrate a new direction for the obsolete model of a museum programmatically in relation to the urban fabric. By subdividing urban elements into atomic-level such as street, stair, wall, and recombining them with totally different programs, it induces users to cause new forms of behavior to happen by chance and overcomes the deterministic functionalism and hierarchial compositions.

“...‘Social condenser’ is the endless and changeable open programs with in a space for the essence of our life...” - Rem Koolhaas 20

(9/12 top) - Component Models based on the matrix results

/

(3/12 bottom) - Parti Model, Conceptual Model, Net Area Based Model

The design should be deeply respectful of the site and setting, creating a fragmented, non-hierarchical, horizontal “Agora and Fleamarket of linked towers where art and society could meet and inter-mingle. Each program is fragmented, scattered and randomly re-organized on the site by keeping the intimate distance. The whole building would cohere around a covered street landscape that expanded and contracted according to its interaction with the discrete towers and is animated by different activities. The connections between the towers consider to permit a continuous gallery experience. 21

Lakefront Kiosk 312 Chicago, IL 2014, Competition Chicago Architectural Biennial

The objective of this kiosk is to exist in people’s everyday lives physically and emotionally through its iconic presence. “As time passes, when it is a ruin, the spirit of its making comes back. It welcomes the foliage that inter- twines and conceals. Everyone who passes can hear the story it wants to tell about its making. The spirit is back.” As Louis Kahn says, the Kiosk 312 has the physical characteristics and use that allows to be left as a “Ruin,” during the winter, leaving it for people to reveal its memory through its existence.

“...The city does not consist of this, but of relationships between the measurements of its space and the events of its past... As this wave from memories flows in, the city soak it up like a sponge and expands...” Invisible City by Calvino Italo

Section

(3) Elevations & (1) Elevation | AutoCAD, Illustrator

Conventional conception of a kiosk is underutilized and under-developed for just being a vending machine for the people and having no emotional or physical connection for people to remember. This kiosk will not only serve as a retail, but be part of one’s life that will be imprinted in one’s memory unnoticingly.

Off Season - Public Art | Rhino, Photoshop

Originated from the historic frame created by the number 312, the void frames will be filled with functions and activities of people. During the winter, they will be removed and act as a public art sculpture. 23
