I believe that the real core of all architectural work lies in the act of construction.
11x11 House Goyang, South Korea 2015 - 2017 Total 318.14 sqm BF: 122.64 / 1F: 99.88 / 2F: 95.62 Reinforced Concrete
This simple box occupies middle of complex form housings. We pursued simplicity and richness the most. Based on clients’ request, there are two outdoor spaces that are visually and physically separated from neighbors and streets. Putting a staircase with three-story tall windows, however, holds the sense of belonging to a neighborhood. The structure system consisted of only an outer shell and 4 columns gives opportunity to change freely inside layout. Totally closed toward the neighborhood, the cubic courtyard connects these modestly sized rooms indirectly, creating a sense of togetherness, while providing a comfortable, spacious living environment; well ventilated, filled with sunlight and connected to the changing seasons.
Making models in different scale is asking ourself questions, finding our own answers with finding solutions. It is also one of the most effective ways of communicating with client emotionally and objectively. 7
Architect’s Field Order / Quality Control and Safety
Unforeseen circumstances, incorrect design decisions or changes, and appropriate decision making during the construction process itself are frequentely happened. By communicating with contractor and client via daily reports, quality control and safety during construction leads to conformance to an original design and planning decisions.
Daniele Vare said, “Negotiation is the art of letting them have your way. Good relationship with workers helps ultimately not only reducing the possibilities of accidents and avoid taken unnecessary risks, but also enhancing quality. 8
Basement Floor / Body of Architecture
The private living areas for two family gatherings are set on an underground level, having a calm atmosphere with the natural illumination from skylights at the semi-outside space called as “Front yard. It can be used as one unified space together with “Front yard” when the folding door is wide opened. The skylights, folding door and windows seat at the top of the staircase, make the subterranean space more comfortable through natural ventilation.
When a space is shaped by only natural light, and shadow, this phase in the construction puerly gives a sense of its spatial structure; weight and atmosphere.
9
Penetrating the staircase into the main volume shows clearly two masses of different character. Additionally, its proportion and layout of the windows are carefully designed, so that it has simple but decent facade in comparison wiht the neighbors.
Private living areas are located in southside and are hidden by layering semipublic spaces; courtyard and staircase. Not only for his family, but also pedestrians glimpse the client’s works on the wall. 10
In this house, all events, the changes of the seasons, course of time, and human activity are created through the void. Depending on where users are, a space is visually combined with the void, so that each space is physically small, but it feels not small.
When frameless sliding doors haning above the ceiling are open, the boundary between each space becomes ambiguous.

Weekend House Jaecheon, South Korea 2016 - 2017 Total 177.16 sqm BF: 63.36 / 1F: 61.62 / 2F: 52.18 Wood Construction + Reinforced Concrete
Featuring wood construction covered by zinc panels and wood claddings, the house’s single large gable covers all living spaces. Thanks to its simplicity, restraint and refinement, the project embodies the our attempt to capture the essence of cottage life - wooden home designed for vacations and enabling true communion with nature. Aiming at simplicity it is comprised of a single volume for living, cooking, eating and the lower floor for meditating, service. To increase the feeling of space within nature are kept to the minimum; walls are positioned as screens so that there is no awareness of the stairs, kitchenette, and doors.
“Working drawings are like anatomical drawings. They reveal something of the secret inner tension that the finished architectural body is reluctant to divulge. by Peter Zumthor 13
LANDSCAPE DESIGN The part of the site was originally sallion fields surrounded by pine trees and few deciduous trees, such as zelkova, cherry, and chestnut trees. Our approaches to the landscape were as in the following. 1. Horizontal Surface - Keeping original fields - Barley & Scallion: Double-cropping, Sharing with family and friends) 2. Vertical Surface - Grouping White Birch Trees with low height dry stack stone wall - Conserving the existing trees 3. Focal Point at The Entry - Flowering trees: Crape Myrtle and Sophora Japonica

In small residential projects in Korea, since many workers frequently ignore the specification of quality requirements, we need to keep attention to every phase before proceeding. Especially, waterproofing all envelopes and making double layered barriers between concrete foundation and wood strucuture are the most important details in the construction process, because the site is located along the stream.
PLAIN SPACE The aim of the interior design is to reduce distraction, and create a calm environment in which user could meditate and relieve stress. Layering two materials; rough cement surface and white painted surface, stretches the length of the space. 14

In order to utilize the natural contours of a hillside and resemble the stream bank beside the site, the lower level floor is partially buried into the hillside and its North-East side is covered with riverside rocks.
The mountain climate allows the use of passive ventilation. The combination of fullheight windows to the South-West and small windows to the North achieves a comfortable room temperature in the summer without the use of air conditioning. 15

UNIQUENESS Exposed structural elements; collar beams used as artificial lightings magnify spatial experience. The form of a gable gives unusual experience to users who are used to living in a flat ceiling and punched openings. In addition, floor seating furnitures make users feel larger than it is.
WITHIN NATURE Particularly the LDK has good continuity into the nature. By using wood cladding both inerior and exterior, the contrast between inside and outside is blurred, and the atmospheres of the changing seasons are felt as much indoors as they are outside.
MEDITATION The lower-level floor consists of dark and rough concrete walls and ceiling partially covered by white plain surfaces, intended for his meditation. It is totally segregated from the upper floors. Even though he comes to the house with his family or friends during vacation, he can be alone in the calm space with sounds of gentle stream. 17
Myung-ji Building Busan, South Korea 2016 - Under Construction Total 334.74 sqm 1F: 118.08 / 2F: 118.08 / 3F: 98.58 Reinforced Concrete
“Good design is good business. This area allows to build only three story house according to the regulation. But most owners here illigally add an attic or extend their building. The solution was to stretch the first and third floor not only to match the height of a building with neighbors but also give residents better living space for better life. Work Responsibility Design & Project Management
Transverse Section 18
OWNER’S HOUSE The space composition is characterized by the division of the house into two areas by wall-like furniture which includes storages, book shelves, even washroom and toilet. All spaces combined together create a lifestyle that minimize the division of the space as much as possible. And 13 feet tall (3.9m) ceiling height and full-height windows give a spacious home to them who are tired of common apartment life.
Third Floor Plan
STUDIO & THREE ROOMS For residents’ privacy, the circulation is clearly detached from the public entry for the retail on the ground floor. Additionally, we detach the each boiler room from the units and combined them outside, so that an inspector can check and maintain them without getting inside each unit. Most important criteria in this design are natural light and passive ventilation.
Second Floor Plan
RETAIL The building sat on the end of T-intersection. When visitors walk in through the shaded walkways, they are impressed by strong contrast of light and dark created by 9 feet wide and 13 foot tall window in middle of 40 foot long wall. Main floor is raised up 1-1/2 foot from the ground level like a “Platform,” and its spacious volume capture pedestrians’ attention.

The concept of this project focuses on patient or visitors who mainly are seniors. Pure and natrual image would be translated into “White and Wood in terms of materiality. When wood panels and walls painted white meet the natural light, the effect of the scheme is more maximized. Like a pearl necklace, organizing the spaces linearly helps the small space feel larger. U.S.Embassy Port Morseby Port Morseby, Papua New Guinea 2014 - 2015
The U.S. Diplomatic Mission Facilities in Port Moresby are growing in order to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding Papua New Guinea economy, and the resulting increase of U.S. investment and business interests in PNG. Our firm joined the project team as design architect for the expanded embassy campus which includes the following new facilities; Office Building Annex, Marine Residence, Site Landscape Development, and other Facilities for the Embassy Community.

Interior elevations of the core and ceiling surface affect an atmosphere most deeply. The ceiling was designed as open and flexible by using vertical strips of painted particle board. This economical solution allowed for all life-safety components to hover unobstructed between the strips while providing baffled lighting, adding interest to an otherwise simple space.
David Novros’ mural Untitled (1970) at the Judd Foundation, 101 Spring St., New York
This monolithic and sculptural surface of the core was inspired by David Novros’ painting. His mesmerized color composition is simplified and translated into the shape, size, and alignment of each piece. 23
UNDERSTANDING GEOMETRY The key point of designing a stairway is to put the first riser one tread depth behind after a landing in order to have the same angle of stair stringers and handrails. It means that the height of the handrail is constantly not changed, and it completes the idea of an “Unibody.
THINKING MATERIALITY & CONSTRUCTION A natural palette of honey-colored wood (Eucalyptus), venetian plaster, and terrazzo is selected to express the atmophere like not being in an office, but an auditorium.
COMPUTER MODELING Computer modeling is not only just for the presentation, but also for testing an idea. Depending on the design phase, a computer model is kept updated, finally we share it with a contractor. 24

Walking up and down stairs is very sensitive and complex mechanism, even though people are unaware of its delicate movement. The aim of the design is to achieve not only comfortableness, but also a decent unibody like a sculpture.

Krueck+Sexton Office Improvement Chicago, IL 2014-2015
Krueck+Sexton Architects was founded in 1978, is recognized as one of the most innovative and accomplished design firms practicing today. K+S has carefully composed a team of talented individuals forming a highly collaborative office. The obsolete model of workspace based on blueprint drawings needed to be transformed in order to have more crews and better serve its expanding roster of West Coast clients and Department of State. Work Responsibility Design & Project Management / Web design 26
Existing Condition: Total workspaces for 12 people on the second floor and 6 people on the first floor; Each member used a drawing table 3’ x 6’ (1800 x 900) size and flat file drawers 3’ long depth along the each wall.
After Completion: Optimize the studio space for maximizing the number of desks and drawers. Total 24 seats are available and a small discussion table.
27
Main Studio / Conference room
As above photographs shown, construction should be proceeded in our office hour for three months. Planninig the schedule and allocating people were the siginificant factors. It was my first project to understand the roles and responsibilities of the project management.
After working with Department of State, the confinential meeting has been increased, and required the higher level of the security clearance. 10’ tall etched glass and soundproof fabric panels were selected to achieve both funcitional performance and emotional atmosphere. 28
Strategic plan
Make a trench for wires
Clean-up and empty the flat files
This two story building that our firm has occupied for almost 20 years was originally built for a gallery. When our firm moved in here, it was fully transformed into an architectural school-like studio; no principal’s office, fully open and equally divided workspace. Although we needed more space for new staff, we decided to keep the same concept with the original one. That is reason why we put the centralized island in order to freely flow many idea and opinions around the studio as much as possible.
Push desks back to the wall

Install new desks
Remove desks and flat files

The scope of works includes a set of proposals for new layout of workspace, enclosure of small conference rooms, new office furniture and custom furniture design, carpet tiles, and more. All shop drawings had to be confirmed in advance and checked to suit the budget. In addition, each process must be scheduled to not overlap, and above all, not interfere with the working environment. Our virtual environment needed to be transformed into a new platform that all members can easily maintain and regularly update so that a visitor has a chance to explore us clearly and deeply. 30
Structure Plan
The essence of a new website is clear and simple structure as our firm does. It was inspired by iPod Classic that is only composed of two gesture; scrolling around and clicking. Also it should emit the same atmosphere no matter what device vistors use.
Like exhibiting works in a gallery, the simpler the design, the more people get closer to the essence. In order to make visitor keep exploring, my desire is all about the good proportaion and its lightness. 31

Advocate Medical Center Oak Lawn, Illinois 2012 Summer Studio
In Evidence Based on Design, E.B.D, there are many ways to design a medical center for not only patients, but also staff, such as making a home-like environment, ease of way finding, getting even natural light into the building, and biophilic design. In the design, in order to accomplish E.B.D, the main concept of the new patient building focuses on communication with users, communication with its neighborhood, and communication with nature.

DESIGNING FROM A PATIENT ROOM TO A BUILDING The site context is surrounded by huge parking lots. Also, there are few vegetations around the site. Thus, it is difficult to get nice views from the patient tower. Also, making a public space that closely connects with nature is very difficult. There are two strategies to solve the current site problems. First, heavy vegetation would be put on the parking garage. Second, we propose a vegetation path, called as “Healing way” that surrounds a patient tower. The path will provide good space quality by the connection with nature.

Into Great Silence Columbus, Indiana 2012 Spring Semester
This project is to design a Roman Catholic Cistercian (Trappist) Monastery for 12 monks, an Abbott, and 120 visitors. It is incredibly strong programmatic nature, and it’s inward focus by keeping with the spirit of the material, and using our newly honed intuitions regarding light and contemplation. Their lives are very simple and repetitive. In order to continuously receive spiritual emotions in such a life, the monastery as a vessel of their lives, must be a place where be enriched by only the essential and the repetitive such as concrete and natural light, and provides various experiences to monks.
Compositional Light and Space from studying Louis Kahn & B.V. Doshi 34
First Floor Plan inspired by the movie, ‘Into Great Silence’: watching it three times to get familiar with the atmosphere of a monastery; Vibrating sound, contrasting light and shadow, temperature of its space and their monotonous life.
“The house is an instrument with which to confront the cosmos” - Juhani Pallasmaa 35

Lincoln Park Boat Club Chicago, Illinois 2011 Fall Semester
The aim of the project has reinvigorated a neglected stretch of public land as an active public park for an underserved urban neighborhood. The Lincoln Park Boat Club offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities year round, including learn to row sessions both in tanks and on the river, youth and masters team rowing, ergometer training, and lessons tailored to individuals with disabilities. By providing a publically accessible riverfront, it also reveals the larger movement toward an ecological and recreational revival of the Chicago River. 36
Site Plan | Sketch Scale: 1’-0”=1/16”
After visiting the site at Jacob Park, I was able to read a passionate desire from the village to have a building that, in time, grow naturally into being a part of the form and history of their place.
Final Model | Scale: 1’-0” = 1/8”
The boat house as a social club helps catalyze necessary momentum, providing visual interest while also offering spatial and environmental advantages that allow the boathouse to adapt to Chicago’s distinctive seasonal changes. 37
ATMOSPHERE Through a dialogue with the site, the understading of the atmosphere and the context of the site is obtained.
ANALYSIS Analyzing the geography of the site and understanding the users’ functional movement such as carrying a boat develop a project that belongs to the neighborhood.
IDEAL MODEL Collage model enabled the articulation of idea into real with creativity. Through studying this model I could eliminatethe boundary of limitation.
APPLICATION & REVISION Many issues and problems exist on the site. Through analyzing models and drawings, solutions to the problems are generated. Through revision and polishing, a components in the project starts to orchestrate and harmonize becoming a coherent whole. 38
The design of the boathouse seeks to expand the vocabulary of rowing facilities on the river by exploring abstract commonalities between rowing and architecture, and by engaging relevant regional precedents outside the realm of boathouse antecedents, such as children’s playground and a bridge.
As a site strategy, a zigzag path divides the site and engenders a public court that establishes both a visual connection to the riverfront, as well as a functional connection to the boathouse: a public invitation to the Chicago River and the boat house. 39

Private Art Gallery West Chicago Suburb, Illinois 2013 Spring Semester
A collector of contemporary art (Cubism, to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art) needs a space to exhibit and store the collection. From time to time the owner plans to use the facility to entertain guests that at times may number only a handful and sometimes as many as 30 persons. The facility should also accommodate overnight guests in a comfortable manner. The facility will be a stand-alone annex to the main residence nearby, both suited on a slightly slopping (11% slope NW to SE), lightly wooded typically midwestern site.

This project needs a good understanding of how the city works and demonstrate a new direction for the obsolete model of a museum programmatically in relation to the urban fabric. By subdividing urban elements into atomic-level such as street, stair, wall, and recombining them with totally different programs, it induces users to cause new forms of behavior to happen by chance and overcomes the deterministic functionalism and hierarchial compositions.
“...‘Social condenser’ is the endless and changeable open programs with in a space for the essence of our life...” - Rem Koolhaas 42
(9/12 top) - Component Models based on the matrix results
/
(3/12 bottom) - Parti Model, Conceptual Model, Net Area Based Model
The design should be deeply respectful of the site and setting, creating a fragmented, non-hierarchical, horizontal “Agora and Fleamarket of linked towers where art and society could meet and inter-mingle. Each program is fragmented, scattered and randomly re-organized on the site by keeping the intimate distance. The whole building would cohere around a covered street landscape that expanded and contracted according to its interaction with the discrete towers and is animated by different activities. The connections between the towers consider to permit a continuous gallery experience. 43

Lakefront Kiosk 312 Chicago, IL 2014, Competition Chicago Architectural Biennial
The objective of this kiosk is to exist in people’s everyday lives physically and emotionally through its iconic presence. “As time passes, when it is a ruin, the spirit of its making comes back. It welcomes the foliage that inter- twines and conceals. Everyone who passes can hear the story it wants to tell about its making. The spirit is back.” As Louis Kahn says, the Kiosk 312 has the physical characteristics and use that allows to be left as a “Ruin,” during the winter, leaving it for people to reveal its memory through its existence.

Conventional conception of a kiosk is underutilized and under-developed for just being a vending machine for the people and having no emotional or physical connection for people to remember. This kiosk will not only serve as a retail, but be part of one’s life that will be imprinted in one’s memory unnoticingly.

Architectural Photography Chicago, IL Morning at Crown Hall, 2013
Making a photograph means compressing a space in three dimensions into two dimensions. Like Cubism, this depends on how I can amplify the characteristics or atmosphere of the space beyond the simple understanding of light and proportionality. Crown hall went beyond the studio where I spent three years studying and designing, telling me how to find a new side from what I am familiar with. It was that I must be able to look at what I am accustomed to with new perspectives and new minds. 46
THE COLLECTION OF LESSONS FROM CROWN I have been carrying the camera every day for three years and have taken Crown hall that is freshly approaching the moment. When I graduated, I culled the photographs and published them. Although it was not officially published, it was a great opportunity to screen a large number of photos and make a book.
OPPORTUNITY Thankfully, the school saw my collection and asked me to use my photos on the school website. It was a great honor for me that my photos represent the image of the school.
ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY Sometimes I am going through a set of pictures, and get a new idea in an image that I hadn’t thought at the time. This element of the unforeseen but serendipitous happens, and applys to my design process. In part it’s simply about the pleasure of collecting the data and amassing the archive, but it’s also about understanding the implications of every design decision and bringing this knowledge to bear on new projects. 47
