Tiger Heart:Â APS Good News ALLEGAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS | DECEMBER 2 - 15, 2019

GOOD THINGS AT APS Happy Holidays! We hope you have a fabulous holiday season not matter how you celebrate! See you back here in 2020!

Students at West Ward and North Ward were able to have a day of fun with Michigan State Troopers. They went shopping and had lunch together.

Proud to be a Tiger! Do This to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain…

The holidays are filled with opportunities to indulge in rich foods and to consume far more calories than normal. Add to that the travel, house guests, and gatherings that cut into your workout routine, it’s no wonder that you’re left in a state of being overfed and under-exercised. It’s a recipe for weight gain! However, you do NOT have to sit by and accept the extra pounds. Do these simple tips to help swing the calorie balance back into your favor. Don’t eat after 7pm. Drink a healthy protein shake for breakfast. Only enjoy ONE sugar treat per day, rather than dozens. Exercise a minimum of 4 days each week. TAKING CARE OF YOU Wellness Tip for Christmas Break: Spend one entire day on you. Sleep in, have lunch with a friend, call a loved one, watch a favorite movie, read a book, and enjoy the things you love! (Taken from Becky Corbett.)

There was no shortage of fun for some West Ward students at the Allegan Aquatic Center! These students worked hard to raise money for their recent Walk-a-Thon!

Congrats to the AAHS Quiz Bowl Team who took 2nd place at a recent event in Wayland! Bonus: They got a tour of the new Carpenters & Millwrights Training Center

When play and learning are mixed together, smiles happen!

Warm fuzzy alert! Allegan Alternative High students mentored a class of elementary students from Dawson leading them through stations that included calm down jars, sensory putty, even cookie decorating. Students could keep an item and the rest will be distributed to buildings for sensory kits. The event ended with a tour of the building to see where the “big kids learn.

Delano Foundation has chosen to invest in the students of Allegan Alternative and their mission to give students “Another Choice” and “Another Chance” to earn their high school diploma. Thank you, Delano Foundation!

West Ward students and staff are showing compassion for those in need in our community. Students and staff held a canned food drive this past week and raised 942 perishable food items that will be used by the Allegan United Methodist Church’s Food Pantry! Great Job West Ward!

The room was packed for AAHS Quiz Bowl Tryouts!

Coach Karen Keedle Cochran and the AAHS bowling team had a fabulous tournament last week and several bowlers came back with medals!

Congratulations to Alison Bishop and Jessica Lytle for earning academic recognition for the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association. To receive this honor, Alison and Jessica had to have at least a 3.7 G.P.A. for their entire high school career! Way to go!

It's back! Have an idea that will improve our already great town? It's time to apply for the "Love Your Hometown" grant opportunity offered through Allegan County Community Foundation. It's time to party! Watch the video above to check out a message to the middle school students.

Mrs. Cassar had some fun rewarding the students who raised at least $150 for the West Ward Walk-aThon. The children got to choose which movie to watch, and the winner was the new GRINCH. They watched it in style at the Performing Arts Center!

Tiger Competitive Cheer competed at The Plainwell Invite placing 1st in D 3 and 2nd overall.

North Ward students enjoyed a little holiday snack.

Ms. Koen's class at PIne Trails has some sight word super stars! Many of our first grade students are moving on to second grade sight words already this year!

West Ward’s 1st through 5th graders have been working on their coding skills to prepare for the World-wide Hour of Coding.

AHS Holiday Spectacular was a great performance of holiday music! Great job all of the performers and Band Director Colin Weber, Choral Director Rebecca Balkon, and accompanist Sue Pabis. What a great experience for our students and community.

Mrs. Norland’s class would like thank everyone that donated to their toy drive for the kids that will be in the hospital during the holidays. Over 100 items were collected. As a result of your generosity many kids’ holidays will be brighter. Thank you Dawson HEROes from the bottom of our hearts! ❤

The APS Special Education students and staff helped put together this beautiful Disney tree! It was auctioned off at the 4H Camp Kidwell Festival of Trees.

Dawson students participated in “Operation Spreading Joy” by collecting canned goods for those in need. Thanks for being a Dawson HERO and helping others.

AAHS principal Laura Feffer was thrilled to spend time with North Ward first graders teaching them about Hannukah. How cool is it to have Allegan Event in our backyard? North Ward student council members got to help out during filming for the recent WOODTV8 piece. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon!

Alternative High's partnership with Renew Therapeutic Riding Center has wrapped up for the year. The students and staff were grateful for the opportunity. Spending season is here, so we've got tips to help you avoid waste and save money! It’s not true that eating healthy foods will cost more; cooking at home will save you dollars from the start. Plus, you’re in control of the portion sizes. Here are a few suggestions to save you money and improve your health, too! Shop smart. Plan your meals for the week before you go shopping, but be prepared to be flexible—you might encounter an unexpected sale item. Buy more fruits and vegetables, and less meat. Instead of meat, use beans in some recipes, like burritos, tacos, soups and pasta dishes. Compare labels to pick the healthiest options when you shop. Fresh and fruits and vegetables are cheapest when they’re in season. Frozen fruits and vegetables without added sauces are affordable and great to have on hand when you’re low on funds or don’t feel like heading to the store. Go whole. Even if that loaf of whole-grain bread costs more than that log of spongy white stuff, you’re getting more nutritional bang for your buck. The whole-grain bread has more vitamins and more fiber, which satisfies your hunger longer. The same is true of whole-grain pastas and crackers, and brown rice instead of white. Do make your own rice, because it’s usually healthier than the mixes. Serve and store. After everyone has taken their desired portion of the great dinner you made, immediately put the leftovers in containers and store them in the fridge or freezer. They could add up to another dinner. That leftover chili would taste great tomorrow over baked potatoes, for example. Leftovers also equal instant lunches!
