COACHING STAFF constant pressure on the defense by stealing bases. Aggressive is exactly the way to describe Warnimont’s approach and his history. In his previous coaching positions at Ashland University and Salem International, Warnimont’s teams rewrote the team and individual school record books. In 1995, he guided Ashland to the Division II College World Series in Montgomery, Alabama. Warnimont accomplished that feat in just five short years at the helm. In 1999, Warnimont’s Salem International team led all collegiate divisions in stolen bases with an average of 3.92 per game. Warnimont spent seven years at Ashland where he totaled 167 wins including a conference championship, a regional championship, and a trip to the Division II World Series. Prior to Ashland, Warnimont began his headcoaching career at Bethany College where he led the Bison to a share of the conference championship in 1989. Warnimont also served as an assistant at Ohio State where he worked as a graduate assistant, Capital University, and Cornell University. Warnimont coached alongside Ted Thoren in 1996 as the two headed the Austrian National Team in the “B” Pool tournament in Hull, England where the team’s fourth-place finish was the country’s best finish ever.

SEASON OUTLOOK OVERVIEW The RedStorm will look to use the momentum from last year’s postseason run where they won 15 of their last 17 games to carry over into the 2016 season. A ranking of #25 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll gives the 2016 squad a great deal to live up to after winning the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as a first-year member in 2015. 28 new faces including 11 transfers will be vying for playing time while 6 starters return from last year’s roster. Only time will tell if the #25 RedStorm will gel the way the 2015 club did during their national tournament run.

PITCHING The RedStorm return 11 of last year’s 35 wins on the mound but have added considerable depth to the pitching staff in this year’s recruiting class. Two all-conference selections return who collectively totaled 11 wins for the RedStorm in 2015. Trent Downs (5-1, 2.31 ERA, 43 SO, 63.0 IP) and Daryin Lewis (6-1, 2.75 ERA, 24 SO, 39.1 IP) will look to lead the rotation to begin the spring. Other returning upperclassmen are Dalton Wilburn (14.2 IP, 6.75 ERA), Anthony Yanez (11.1 IP, 1 SV) and Jacob Hastings (23 IP). Several transfers are expected to make immediate impacts including left-handers Pat Higley (Ohio Dominican), Christian Vain (CCBC Essex) and right-handers Joe Landers (Truman State) and Collin Powers (Ashford). Freshmen expected to compete for innings are Seth Wills (Gallia Academy), Zach Harvey (Spring Valley), Zach Russell (Wheelersburg), Zac Morris (Heath), Cole Wilson (West Liberty Salem), Austin Wolfinger (Grove City), and redshirt freshman Austin Bissell (Pinecrest). Expected to redshirt in 2016 are Bailey Freas (Bloom Carroll), Tom Paradiso and Jakobe Lewis (Logan Elm). 2016 REDSTORM BASEBALL

SEASON OUTLOOK CATCHING

Two catchers have emerged from the pack this fall and should provide consistency behind the plate. Freshman Dylan Shockley (Minford) who was a 1st-Team All-Ohio Selection in 2015 will share the catching duties with sophomore Rusty Shull Jr. who got his feet wet in 2015 hitting .233 in 18 games behind the plate. Adding depth to the position are Conner Melton (Dawson CC), Graham Parsley (Granville) and Juston Donnally (Briggs). FIRST BASE

Coppin State transfer Lance Montano should provide senior leadership and pop in the middle of the lineup. New to the position is senior Chris Ford who hit .315 with 8 doubles and 27 RBIs in 2015. Also returning is 2nd team all-KIAC selection Cody Blackburn who led the team in RBIs with 37 as a freshman. SECOND BASE Two transfers that should compete for the starting position at second base are Judah Wollenburg (East Georgia Community College) and Juan Cruz (Albergue Olimpico). Jakobe Lewis (Logan Elm) will redshirt.

SHORTSTOP Junior Luis Jimenez should anchor the middle infield for the RedStorm. Jimenez hit .229 in 49 games as the everyday third baseman in 2015. Pushing for playing time at shortstop are transfer Logan Walters (Notre Dame College) and dual-role freshman Zach Harvey (Spring Valley). THIRD BASE Sophomore Evelier Jimenez who saw limited playing time as a freshman should compete for a starting job with several other players. Redshirt freshman Steven Asbury and dual-role players Daryin Lewis, Zac Morris (Heath) and Julio Casiano (Sullivan County CC) are also in the mix.

OUTFIELD The outfield may be the deepest and most competitive position on the field for the RedStorm in 2016. Returning All-Conference selections Kirk Yates and Carlos Flores should solidify the outfield. Redshirt sophomore Dominic Tiberi, senior Tyler Noel and newcomers Ty Warnimont (Union University) and Kameron Herring (Chattanooga State) should push for playing time and add a needed speed element to the offense. Freshmen adding depth to the outfield are Matt Joyce (Minford), Trevor Porter (Point Pleasant) and Austin Wolfinger (Grove City). Dual-sport athlete Sky Oliver (Portsmouth) will redshirt in 2016.

2016 REDSTORM BASEBALL

2015 REVIEW The RedStorm's first year in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference proved to be a memorable one, winning the conference tournament and making the furthest run in the program history; one game away from the NAIA World Series.
The weather and inconsistent play left Rio searching for answers early as they dropped 4 games to Bryan College to open the 2015 season. After a home series was moved to Savannah, Georgia the RedStorm added 4 wins to their record in 6 contests against Concordia (MI). Another weekend of snow in southeast Ohio forced the RedStorm back to Savannah where they hosted a 3-way series with Pikeville and West Virginia Tech, coming away with a split of the series. The RedStorm dropped a road doubleheader to West Virginia Tech in their final two games before heading to Florida for their final tune-up before the conference opener.
In Florida, the Rio won their opener against Purdue-North Central as the bats came alive in the warm weather. The RedStorm would next lock horns with #4 Northwood, surrendering two 7 run leads in a 2 run loss proving they could play at that level. In the final two games Rio lost to Warner and defeated Webber International before beginning conference play at IU-Southeast.
Rio won three out of four from IUSE on the road to start the conference season with a bang. A mid-week sweep of Pikeville put the RedStorm at the .500 mark at 13-13. The RedStorm traveled to Brescia where they again took 3 out of 4 and moved to 6-2 in conference play and 16-14 overall. A pair of mid-week losses to Shawnee brought Rio back to the .500 mark and the RedStorm continued their midseason slump losing 3 out of 4 at home against first place Point Park. A mid-week win over Division II Glenville State created some momentum going into the weekend with Asbury where the RedStorm swept the Eagles to jump to 11-5 in the KIAC and 22-19 overall. After a home split with Shawnee, Rio entered the final conference series of the season. The RedStorm swept Alice Lloyd to improve to 15-5 in the KIAC, a solid second place finish behind Point Park and the number 2 seed going into the conference tournament. The home finale for the seniors was a big day defeating visiting Central Penn 22-0, the largest margin of victory in program history. The final tune-up before the conference tournament was #2 ranked Georgia Gwinnett in Beckley, West Virginia. The RedStorm ended the regular season by sending a message, defeating the Grizzlies 11-5 to remain hot going into the postseason.
As the #2 seed, the RedStorm drew IUSE in the second round of the KIAC tournament and won a 10 inning game 2-1 to move into the championship game of the winner’s bracket against #1 Point Park. The RedStorm gave Point Park their first ever conference tournament loss in the KIAC by a score of 6-3 to advance to the championship game where they would again play IUSE. In the game determining an automatic bid to the national tournament, the RedStorm claimed their first KIAC championship with a 6-1 win.
The RedStorm received the #5 seed in the Daytona Beach national tournament site and drew Southeastern out of Florida in the first round. Rio pounded Southeastern by the score of 10-4 to run their winning streak to 13 in a row. Following the win, the RedStorm were set to face one of their toughest opponents yet, #1 seed and #8 nationally ranked AuburnMontgomery. The RedStorm won a nail biter 3-2, extending their winning streak to 14 in a row and advancing to the championship game of the winners bracket against host EmbryRiddle. The Eagles proved to be too much for Rio that day, defeating them 9-3 and sending them to the losers bracket to play old foe Bryan College who had previously beaten the RedStorm in a 4 game set to open the season. Against the Lions, the RedStorm battled and squeaked out a 5-4 come from behind victory to secure a spot in the championship game. In the title game, the RedStorm fell in a 2-1 heartbreaker to the #16 Embry-Riddle Eagles and finished the season 35-22 and one game away from Lewiston, Idaho and the NAIA World Series. The 3-2 record and runner-up in the championship game of the opening round title game was the strongest finish in Rio Grande history. 2016 REDSTORM BASEBALL
