A Higher Level Your Chamber celebrated 98 years during its recent annual banquet. It’s a great event, not because it’s an acknowledgement of the many successes the Chamber had this past year, as in every year, but because it’s an opportunity to recognize people who have a deep passion for their craft and this community.

Even when the economy is stronger, small businesses have to take serious stock of how they operate and what they can do to thrive. This year’s Small Business of the Year winners are notable because of their high level of commitment to serving their customers. Data Graphics is best known as a custom printing operation, but in recent years has expanded its base of products to include a wide array of promotional items that help its customers promote their own businesses. The winner in the 10+ employee category, Rob O’Brian, President Boyd Metals, has grown by adding to its capacity to custom fabricate steel and other metal products to rigid specifications demanded by its expanding customer base. In the not-for-profit sector, Habitat for Humanity is well recognized for its immediate and continuing efforts to help provide good housing for people displaced by the tornado.

But more recently, the organization has expanded its opportunities with ReStore, providing people a place to find low-cost items for their own homes, with the funds generated supporting Habitat’s ongoing efforts.

Our Industries of the Year are great representatives of the fact that, large or small, our companies have a great impact. Our large Industry of the Year, Able Manufacturing & Assembly, has been a recognized name in Joplin for 60 years. Beginning with a single product line, making Bunny Brad trucks, the company today is engaged in a number of parts and complete installations across a variety of sectors. Thirty years ago, the company was purchased by the Hillenbrand family, who led the company to diversify. With the economic downturn in 2009, many of the company’s major customers lost business, in turn causing a significant negative impact on this local firm. However, the family continued to support the firm and, with a new direction and local support, the company has grown its workforce by 20 percent in the last year and continues to find new opportunities.

Our Small Industry of the Year, Component Packaging, began 18 years ago. It was also a family-owned business and one of the first companies to locate in the newly opened Crossroads Park. About 10 years ago, the original owners were bought out by Lori and Mike Magoulis, who began taking the firm in new directions. The company has expanded its customer base to more than 30 customers across the U.S. As the company has grown, it has faced significant cost challenges from Chinese competitors, but has met the challenge by becoming the top-quality, customer-focused firm in its arena. Today the company’s 30 employees push an average of two million packages a week out to its customers.

And then there are the Golden Apple winners: K-2nd grade – Michelle Young, Jefferson Elementary School; 3rd-5th grade – Lisa Satterfield, College Heights Christian School; 6th-8th grade – Julie Pettyjohn, St. Peter’s Middle School and 9th-12th grade – John Atteberry, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School. All of these teachers personify the commitment to quality education and dedication to student success in all of our area schools, public and private.

Kudos, too, to Cleo Copeland, the winner of this year’s Arty Award. While business and education play major roles in the success of a community, the arts add to a community’s soul. Cleo’s enthusiasm for all things art energizes anyone who works with her.

The Chamber’s Young Professional of the Year is Shawn Daniel of Commerce Bank. Shawn’s dedication to the YPN’s community service projects made him an easy choice for his peers. And the YPN’s Rookie of the Year award went to Stephanie Onstot of The Alliance of Southwest Missouri.

Finally, a warm congratulations to Peggy Fuller, the Chamber’s Outstanding Citizen. Peggy has a strong commitment to enhancing both the arts and education in our area. She was a founding member and is currently Chairman of the Joplin Schools Bright Futures program. She was an original Teaching Reading to Every Kid coach when the Chamber began that program a decade ago. She has also been a strong supporter of Spiva and Pro Musica.

These companies and individuals remind us that great, positive things happen every day. The companies and organizations are committed to their employees and the community. The individuals give of their time, talent and treasure to lend a helping hand, to raise others up and to make this a better place. And all of them are an inspiration for all of us to reach for a higher level.

Message to the Network from Chairman Nicole Brown April marked the changing of the guard in Young Professionals Network (YPN) leadership. I am grateful for the opportunity to step into the chair role with Brent Baker as co-chair. Lindsey Hayes did an excellent job of leading the organization in 2014-2015, and I would like to extend a personal thank you for her service. The executive team, made up of returning members Shawn Daniel, Jake Heisten, Ryan Melton, Greg Sutton, Megan Tyler, Christina Williams and Lindsey Hayes, along with new executive team members Jennifer Little and Stephanie Onstot, convened for the annual planning retreat in mid-April. The membership provided feedback for the retreat at the quarterly meeting in March. Members weighed in on initiatives they would like to add, change, continue and discontinue in the coming year.

Many people in the community are surprised to learn YPN is only seven years old. Growing to 185 members in 2015, we have completed 2,020 hours of volunteer activities in the community. These hours only include those completed at YPN events and barely scratch the surface of the impact young professionals have in the community.

This conversation did help us realize we could do a better job of recognizing and celebrating our young professionals’ service to the community. We are compiling a list of YPN members currently serving on boards. We will also explore opportunities to prepare young professionals for board service and connecting them with board openings.

My challenge to JACC members is to look for young professionals in the community you can mentor, engage and empower. The membership is made up of talented and energetic individuals, many of whom are looking for an opportunity to impact the community but have not yet been asked to take a seat at the table. Ask for their input, opinion and time; they will impress you with their perspective and level of commitment.

Worker misclassification, or 1099 Fraud, negatively impacts both workers and businesses. Worker misclassification is when a business misclassifies an employee as an independent contractor to avoid paying certain taxes.

Misclassified workers may not be able to receive health insurance or pension plans and could be denied unemployment benefits, workers’ compensation insurance and other benefits.

Worker misclassification also generates substantial losses to the Treasury and Social Security Medicaid Funds, as well as the state unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation funds. The reduction in funds increases the employers’ financial liability.

Some forms of misclassification occur when workers are not reported to the state or federal government but, rather, are working “off the books” or being paid “under the table” in cash. If a business intentionally or accidentally misclassifies their workers, they are still in violation of the law.

In determining the existence of the independent contractor relationship, the Division of Employment Security reviews if the employer retains the right to control how the results are accomplished or only has input on the results desired. It is not necessary that the business actually direct or control the manner in which their services are performed, so long as the business retains the right do to so.

Leadership Joplin Class Project The Alliance of Southwest Missouri and the Boys and Girls Club have teamed up with Leadership Joplin’s Class of 2015 to host a FREE community block party May 19, and you’re invited! The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club facility, 317 Comingo Avenue in Joplin.

The block party will host a variety of fun games such as bounce houses, a dunk tank, temporary tattoo station and much more! We will also focus on safety factors such as fire safety and having your children fingerprinted by the Joplin Police Department.

Free food available on a first come, first served basis.

• Access. Today, improvements in trade finance, the Internet and trade agreements have dramatically increased access to markets worldwide.

• Demand. More than 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power is located outside the United States. Your competitors are increasing their global market share, and you can, too.

• Profitability. Exporting can be profitable for businesses of all sizes. On average, sales grow faster, more jobs are created and employees earn more than in non-exporting firms.

• Competitive Advantage. The United States is known throughout the world for high-quality, innovative goods and services, customer service and sound business practices.

• Risk Mitigation. Most companies that export have an easier time riding out fluctuations in the U.S. economy and are more likely to stay in business.

Tomorrow’s Leaders Today 2015 Class Graduates The 2015 Tomorrow’s Leaders Today (TLT) class, along with invited guests, celebrated their achievements at a graduation ceremony and dinner on April 9 at Missouri Southern State University. Rylee Hartwell, Joplin High School, was chosen by his classmates to speak on their behalf at the ceremony. Nazhath Sulthana, Joplin High School, was awarded the General Mills $1,000 scholarship for her essay “Innovative Leadership and My Community Involvement.” The 43 members of this year’s TLT class spent the last five months learning about the Joplin area by meeting with various community leaders and visiting businesses and organizations.

Joplin vs. Springfield: The Chamber Challenge Race to Bronze The Show-Me Heroes Chamber Challenge invites all chambers of commerce, as well as their members, to take the pledge to actively recruit veterans and service members for available positions. When a chamber reaches at least 10 percent of its members pledged, they receive Bronze-level recognition.

Race to Bronze is a little competition within the Chamber Challenge to see which chamber—Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce or Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce—will reach Bronze first.
