s I write this old Boris has just announced a 4 week extension to the current restrictions, which means live music can continue with distanced audiences. Not ideal but better than nothing, I have met with the venue for the Rock Lynx Magazine Official Launch Party and we are able to proceed with a lower capacity, so those lucky enough to get on the guestlist are in for a treat! In this issue we’ve tried our best to support some of the venues that are going to be supporting live music as we see it return, and it is vital that we step up and support these venues and musicians to keep our rock scene alive. I would personally like to thank all of this issue’s advertisers, their support really helps to keep the magazine running, and we love promoting local music based businesses.

Gemma Baker - Online Editor

The Rock Lynx team are such good fun to work with, and they’re all super-passionate about what they do. I’m thrilled to be working as the Online Editor, whipping our web-presence into shape, and bringing you the latest local news, reviews, and interviews to our Blog. Keep an eye on: www.rocklynx.co.uk over the coming months, we’ve got big plans to expand the site, and don’t forget to subscribe so that all that juicy fresh music news goes straight to your inbox!

Jordan Bell - Social Media & PR

This is such an exciting time for the magazine, I’m thrilled to be working alongside the entire team. I feel like this is the start of something incredibly special for the Lincolnshire music scene. I will be running all of our social media platforms, be sure to follow our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube pages for even more great content going forward. We have also launched the ‘Rock Lynx Discovery’ Spotify playlist. Here you can find brand new releases from Lincolnshire and surrounding areas. It is truly a playlist to light up your parties!

FESTIVAL TIPS

10. Don’t bring just 1 pair of foot 8. Have backup money prepared Yes I know we all might want to spend as much as wear humanly possible at the bar, but from experience The weather for a festival can be pretty bipolar. One of the days might be a scorching heat wave bringing joy and happiness to everyone, the next day it can be bombarded with thunder and lightning and all out misery! Making the ground muddier than ever and turning your campsite into Shrek’s Swamp! When it is thoses days of misery, bring a pair of slip on boots. These slip-on boots can vary from basic wellies to steel toe capped (slip on for easy access). For those sunny days though bring a pair of trainers you don’t mind getting trashed. Even if it isn’t muddy you are going to be doing A LOT of walking and that might give your shoes some wear and tear.

9. Don’t litter!

It’s 2021. We have the technology. There are bins at the end of every area on a festival site. Don’t be lazy. It just makes it harder for everybody else trying to get to a certain area in the festival. Walking from the main stage to the second stage shouldn’t be an obstacle course! It kills the vibe of the festival and lowers everybody’s morale. Plus there is nothing worse than coming back to your tent after a few beers and tripping up on some stranger’s curry on the floor, making yourself face plant the ground and getting yourself caked in mud and dirt from head to toe!

6

that is really not a good idea. You need to have some money spare for emergencies. Whether it’s to buy after sun or a hat after getting burnt or to buy new clothes after all your clothes have been destroyed tripping up in the mud. It is absolutely essential to have money spare when you know what hits the fan.

6. You can never bring enough pants and socks!

When you are mixing so many different styles of food on that weekend you never know when nature will call. Sometimes at the most impractical time! So it is very important to pack a couple of spare pairs of pants. There is also a chance you are not going to shower for 3-5 days and your feet are going to absolutely stink of sweat from walking everywhere so it is very important to put on a fresh pair of socks every day.

7. DON’T BE A C*CK

As much as I accept that all british people are idiots when they are abroad, they should not act like that when they are on home soil at a festival. Maybe you have had a bad day because you’re a bit sunburnt or wet or you’ve missed your favourite band of that day but that isn’t everybody else’s fault. Try to take a step back from the situation and treat people how you want to be treated. Also be sure to respect all staff members at all times as well. Local crew, security and caterers. Without them the event wouldn’t be happening. They are human beings like you and me at the end of the day and they just want to work hard giving you good service and maybe earn a few pennies. One more thing on thesis subject, If your favourite band is coming up next on stage, don’t barge your way to the front. You can seriously hurt people doing that. If you’re that eager to see them at the front you should have turned up to the barrier earlier.

5. You can never go wrong with jeans!

Jeans are the perfect all round pair of trousers to wear. You can never be too warm in them, you can never be too cold in them. They are brilliant for any weather you may come across at a festival and you will look good the whole weekend!

2. Sun cream is a must

Come rain or come shine. At some point in each festival day there is a period where the sun will shine really brightly and will burn you no matter how hot or cold it is. When I went to Equinox Festival (which is in the last weekend of September) it was typical Autumn weather but at the time where it was sunny at cold temperature I burnt the part of my forehead that was still showing despite wearing my hat which made a tad bit sunstroke and a bit ill on the final day. I find it best to put sunscreen on all over your face and all the way down both arms as soon as you wake up every morning for maximum protection.

“use them when you get

lonely 4. Tissues are life!

Days before the festival stock up on packets of tissues! Stock up on them like there is a pandemic! Tissues are a multi purpose item. Have a couple of packets in either a jacket or jeans pocket at all times. You can sneeze in them for if you have hayfever, you can clean dirt off your face with them, you can use them to wipe when there is no bog role in the portaloo and you can use them when you get lonely in your tent at night!

3. Wear a hat!

Hats are essential for standing in one place outdoors for a long time. If it’s cold and raining with gusts of wind, wear a wooly hat or any other sort of hat you’d wear in winter. If it is hot wear either a baseball cap, snap back or a good old fashion straw hat! Or exercise! Dress up! Whether it’s a police hat, a popeye hat or even a deep sea diving helmet! Just wear a hat! If you don’t wear a hat you are screwed either way. If it’s raining, you can go to bed with a wet head and get a shiver on and be ill or if it’s hot and sunny, you could get badly sunburnt and get sun stroke. Trust me that is not fun. Plus if you’re precious about your hair, I’m sorry to break it to you, it’s going to get messed up. If you want to look good. Wear a good hat.

in your tent at night!” 1. Have fun!

Festivals are borderline holidays. They are the best place to release any negative energies in your day to day life so it is paramount that you leave all of your drama and stress at the door and learn to let go of it all and just enjoy the atmosphere of the festival. Take some time to look at all the smiles on people’s faces and their reaction to the moment their favourite band hits the stage. Trust me that joy is infectious! Enjoy the sights fo some of the most hilarious outfits you have ever seen in your life that some people come dressed up as and enjoy the smells of some of the best food you will ever taste (it may not be Gordon Ramsay quality food but trust me the food is to die for when you’re hammered haha!) Whether you go alone or with loved ones. There is nothing better in life than being at a brilliant festival.

S

et right on Lincoln’s doorstep at the Lincolnshire Showground, Call Of The Wild festival is helping to spark a revolution in Lincoln’s rock scene by hosting an event that brings in national level acts as well as still supporting local bands... WE APPROVE! This year, even after several rescheduled dates in both 2020 and 2021, they have added a fourth day to the festival to give us even more rock for our buck. Even with the delay in restrictions taking the final stage of the government roadmap over the festival dates, they assure us they will still go ahead, and we will be there to cover all of the fantastic bands they have booked in. KAYLYDE

RECOMMENDS As mentioned above, Call Of The Wild show’s a tremendous amount of support for Lincolnshire bands from larger acts like SKARLETT RIOT, who are on the national circuit and pulling a large number of fans, both listening to their music and buying tickets to see them live. To bands like KAYLYDE who are a dedicated young band who rock just as hard as they work and have a great deal of potential to go places with their music! Below is a list of th Lincolnshire bands to watch out for on the festival weekend. Skarlett Riot

camping

As far as festival camping experiences go, Call Of The Wild know’s how treat you right! Not only are there the normal facilities like fresh water and toilets, but actual SHOWERS... I don’t know about you, but that sounds ideal after a sweaty night of rocking. Another feature that feels quite unique to this festival is the ability to book a group/club pitch: meaning you don’t need to worry about not being able to camp with your friends if you’re arriving at different times, how ideal. There are a few things to be aware of however, if you plan on cooking at your tent you will need a gas stove or purpose built barbecue as cookin by all other methods is not allowed. If you plan to have a vehicle with you, then you must adhere to the one way system and it must not be operated on the campsite after 10pm. There is no electrical hookup unless booked prior to the show so we recommend taking a big power bank to kep your phone charged, if you have a generator with you this can be operated between the hours of 9am and 10pm.

travel

CAR If you’re driving to the festival it’s nice and easy to find, Lincolnshire Showground is well sign-posted, and on events weekends stewards and extra signage make it nearly impossible to get lost, just set your sat-nav for: Linolnhire Showground Lincoln LN2 2NA TRAIN If you are travelling by public transport, the nearest train station is Lincoln Central Station, from here you will need to arrange a lift or get a taxi to the showground. BUS There are no buses that stop at the showground, if you need to travel by bus go to Lincoln Central Bus Station and arrange a lift ot book a taxi from there to the showground.

eyond The Woods is on the softer side of what we cover in Rock Lynx Magazine, however for the indie rock fans amongst you it’s definitely worth checking out. If you’re looking for a chilled out festival that won’t break the bank but will break the monotony of the daily grind, this is the one to attend.

RECOMMENDS Aside from the headline acts such as ALFIE TEMPLEMAN and THE STAVES, who are bound to put on an awesome show, here are some of the Lincolnshire artists we know well that are definitely worth the watch:

CAMPING

There are three campsites at the festival, THE GLAMPING HIDEAWAY, THE GLADE, and THE MAIN CAMPSITE. Each site offering a unique experience. THE GLAMPING HIDEAWAY is the festival equivalent of 5 star accomodation, here you will arrive to a fully-furnished bell tent and be met by a glamping concierge team from your priority parking area. In addition to the already first class experience, you also recieve exclusive Beyond The Woods merchandise, access to the invite-only Thursday night party... AND you get access to SHOWERS! THE GLADE offers a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of The Main Campsite, with reserved pitches, access to the SHOWERS, and parking right next to your tent. If you prefer to enjoy the festival from the comfort of a campervan, this is the campsite you’ll need to book through. The Glade also has an 11pm curfew so if you’re more hot choc & mini roll than rock ‘n’ roll, you’ll feel right at home.

THE MAIN CAMPSITE for best value for money and to be as close to the action as possible, The Main Campite is where you need to be, as the cheapest weekend ticket and ‘mere seconds walk to The Clearing, and our stages’. Although this camp has no access to showers, it also has NO 11PM CURFEW, so if you want to party the night away with your friends, this is the one.

TRAVEL ADVICE

BY CAR Stourton Woods is situated on the A158, mid-way between the village of Wragby and the town of Horncastle. It’s a little under 30 minutes’ drive from the city of Lincoln. There are several entrances, but the entrance you’re looking for, Clays Lane, will be very clearly signposted. BY BUS The festival is on the number 56 bus route. If you are going to take the bus, we’d very strongly advise getting a lift between the bus stop and the festival site. Please don’t attempt the journey by foot. BY TRAIN Lincoln train station is very easily accessible from across the country, with regular direct train services from London Kings X, and northern connections via Newark North Gate. Once you arrive in Lincoln, we advise arranging a lift between the station and the festival site.

tonedead festival really is leading the charge and flying the flag for classic rock in the local area! Although not strictly Lincolnshire, held at Newark showground it is technically Nottinghamshire, however, given their commitment to our common cause and just how close to Lincoln they are, we give them our full support.

and a great festival, it is rather exciting! We’ve looked through the line-up and these are the bands we are most excited to see come august!

LACK STAR RIDERS formed by Ricky Warwick are often described as the next generation of Thin Lizzy however they have definitely put a unique BSR stamp on that classic rock sound combining dual lead guitar work and powerful vocals to create big rock anthems. KRIS BARRAS BAND offer a hard rock twist on American southern rock inspired gritty tunes, with bluesy lead guitar and killer riffs. Words: Hayley Fowler

‘The Engine Shed is proud to be Lincolnshire’s largest live music and entertainments facility, housed in a renovated engine shed, in the heart of the city.’ Connie Jarvis – Entertainments Manager – ULSU Group If you are a student in Lincoln then the venue you are sure to have heard about that offers exceptional live music as well as good club and comedy nights, will be the Engine Shed. The Engine Shed has been well known to host a brilliant variety of bands some of the bigger names that have graced the Engine Shed’s stage are; Enter Shikari, Don Broco, Feeder, Lower Than Atlantis, Gentleman’s Dub Club (who were supported by local band Kings & Bears), The Wombats, Stereophonics, Deftones and lots more (too many to list in this case). I personally attended the Don Broco gig and it was brilliant, they were supported by the La Fontanes another good band I recommend people check out. I also attended a Knock out Kane gig a while back at this venue, they are a Lincolnshire band from and they have gone on to do amazing things with their music. The En-

gine Shed bars are not short of alcoholic beverages including draught lagers, craft beers, wines, ciders, and variety of spirits. All being well Covid wise the venue should be back to hosting amazing gigs in no time, I spoke to Connie the Entertainments Manager and she supplied me with a list of up and coming shows: 27th June – BBC Introducing in Lincolnshire w/ Serena Joy, Dimaggio Jones & Mary’s Dream 3rd July – The Dualers 9th July – Manchester! Calling 2nd September – Blossoms 11th September – Black Stone Cherry The sister venue The Tower bar is ajoined to the Engine Shed and has a fully inclusive menu offering meat, vegetarian and vegan food. The menu is available from The LineUp: www.thelineuplincoln.co.uk which is open 7 days a week. The Engine Shed opening times vary depending on the event, most of the live music events have doors opened at 7pm. They aim to have live music once or twice a week, however, The Engine Shed, which is ran by the Student Union of Lincoln University, host a number of other events in the venue alongside live music, such as comedy, club nights and corporate events so the options really are endless. I personally have spent many a good night in The Engine Shed and I have been fortunate to see a variety of bands there. I highly recommend popping in if you haven’t already.

Over this year’s lockdown Akedo has undergone some upgrades, such as having new spaces where customers can game, custom painted artwork on the walls, including an area down short steps that resembles a street of South Korea, which is visually stunning under neon lighting and would be a great photo opportunity for gig goers to remember fondly of the fun times had at Akedo. With the recent easing of lockdown measures Akedo has been able to reopen and been conducting business at the following and current hours:

s the lockdown loosens and our desires to explore the vast lands of Lincolnshire emerge, I’ve found myself (and I’m sure many others) interested in what’s really out there and, as I don’t get out there much, I like to plan ahead... I’ve been given the direction to investigate Scunthorpe, aptly nicknamed Scunny for its beautiful landscape and welcoming venues to sit in the glorious sun or go indoors to enjoy the unique establishments. Today we look into the hosts of live music Lincoln IMP and Café Indie to find out what’s on for this summer of debauchery and head banging hard rock. Starting with Lincoln IMP, located on Gloucester Avenue, Scunthorpe, DN16 2ND with a CAPACITY OF 400!

“An iconic venue with a rich history of having some big name bands and artists on”

It’s not just gigs to look forward to though, while providing a fantastic beer garden they frequently update their Facebook with thanks to Lorraine, who to lets us know when they’re open - on the daily. They’ve updated their sound system, host karaoke nights, do theme nights of reggae, acoustic jams and have mental health check-ins; a great community for locals and new patrons alike making everyone feel welcome throughout these hard times - they’ve really stepped up to the mark with the government guidelines and I can’t wait to book my days off to visit. Upon viewing their website I’ll be booking these 2 gigs in July: The Total Stone Roses - 3rd July touring at 60 locations and blessing us on Saturday 3 rd July 2021 at 7:30pm, with Oaysis as the supporting band, both featuring an Indie sound reminiscent of 1989 classic rock. You can also catch them at Lincoln Uni Student Union on the 9 th for Now That’s What I Call Manchester!

After speaking to Gary Butcher, a promoter of the venue, he had this to say “Looking forward to resuming live music, and the plans for the venue is to continue to bring more live music, obviously being a promoter that is what I concentrate on. Lincoln Imp is an iconic venue with a rich history of having some big name bands and artists on”.

f you’re looking elsewhere, look no further than Café Indie, located 169 - 173 High Street, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN15 6EH. Recognized for their wholesome youth work within the local community from providing a safe space, supporting young people, but also known for live music, food and atmosphere. Recently providing a new menu for vegans, vegetarians and non-vegetarians, with all food made on-site, fresh from kitchen to table. From Monday to Wednesday their focus is on the youth, delivering for children aged 13-18 and in their own words from their website “putting a real emphasis on music as a means to engage”. Needless to say they received a Children in Need grant to fund musical project for disadvantaged children, in 2019. From Thursday’s to Sundays it’s all about the customers, open 10am-10pm with the exception of food served between 12-3 and 5-8. After checking out the menu myself, I’m excited to try their Szechuan Burger [VE] with stir-fried pepper, chilli and wedges, pairing well with my usual glass of whiskey on ice. I would also be very interested in having a selfie with the massive penguin plushie while sat on the hand chair, honestly this is the epitome of my aesthetic. Book your tickets NOW for: Kingsway, Billy Sanders, Connor Hanley - July 5th Are you ready for timeless thrills, full capacity seating and yet more Indie sounds? If you said yes to all three then I would highly suggest discovering these bands ASAP! If not for the individual artists but for the musical experience of the year.

The K’s - July 23rd Jamie Boyle, guitarist/vocalist describes them perfectly on their website by saying, “We want to be so much more than just listening to the music it’s developing so that everyone is united, in a room with a thousand other people who share a common interest, all having a mint time”. Having previously shared stages with huge bands including The Who, The Killers and Aerosmith, you’re guaranteed to become a new devotee of fandom. With it being early days so far there will be so many more gigs to see but for now, these are the highlighted live shows I look forward to most. I’ll be booking a week off work, maybe 2 in total to truly absorb the sunshine and Scunthorpe area. I’ll see you there!

COBBLES BAR “full of atmosphere and has a really great scene at night” Words: Ella Fearnley

obbles Bar is located just off of Cornmarket, down New Street. It’s open 10am-1am daily apart from on a Sunday when it opens the doors a little later at 12pm. Upon approaching this bar, you may be able to see a vibrant piano placed outside with the chance of a little live music from passers-by or take advantage of it yourself and have your own mini gig. The outside doesn’t give much away but this great bar is full of character. With seating both inside and out and space for live events. Upon arrival staff are friendly and welcoming and have customer safety at heart. From Full English Breakfasts to Classic pub snacks you’re bound to find a tasty treat to eat while enjoying a couple of drinks. Speaking of drinks this bar has a fantastic range of beers and an extensive range of spirits to choose from. Or a nice cold Jager bomb if you’re feeling up to it. Hot drinks are also on offer with the coffee being carefully selected to offer the finest quality. Although doors had to close over lockdown this didn’t put a stop to the weekly quiz night. Cobbles Bar kept up with hosting it every week on their Facebook page due to phenomenal support. Now it’s time to get pens at the ready and head back down every Thursday at 9pm. The quizzes are still available online if you want a couple of warms ups!

Along with quiz nights there’s a lot more to look forward to with the reopening. Live music is finally due to start taking place again and this is the perfect spot to catch a local group. With acoustic, rock and DJ nights this bar has quite a bit to offer. With live music taking place through the week the most prominent nights tend to be Friday-Sunday. Past acts that have most recently performed here include The Mardy Johnny Depps and The Strellies just to name a couple. Cobbles Bar is also no stranger to hosting open mic nights which are always a treat to discovering hidden talents. Although no live music is currently confirmed in the coming months, I’m sure it won’t be long until we have a great line up to go out and support.
