THE STATE OF IT!

Vigilantes at The Platform, Lincoln as part of a Beyond The Woods show.

T

o state the obvious, the last 2 years have been tough on the music industry, particularly the live music side of the industry. Here in Lincolnshire, we’ve seen some brutal cancellations that have brought some of the best festivals in our area to their knees! Notably: Call Of The Wild festival, who despite their most admirable efforts were forced to cancel both 2020 and 2021. If it wasn’t for an extremely loyal fanbase of people who were willing to roll over tickets and continue to buy tickets for rescheduled dates, it’s debatable that the festival would even exist in 2022. The same could be said of Beyond The Woods Festival, who have unfortunately made the difficult decision to postpone hosting their festival this year. However, the tenacity of BTW prevails… these guys haven’t just doubled down, they’ve tripled down; Taking their organisational and promotional skillset and applying it to live shows instead. The gigs Beyond The Woods have booked so far are exactly what you’d expect from the pioneers of up and coming indie artists, booking the likes of: Vigilantes, Mona Vale, and Mosaics. Yet, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Lincolnshire’s rock

scene seems to be coming back even stronger than before. We’re seeing not only gigs in established venues and long-standing events returning, but new events from well-known promoters bringing national level artists to Lincolnshire. Looking forward into this year, February 26 th sees the official re-launch and re-brand of The Drill Hall, now cleanly re-branded as The Drill. Luckily for the arts and music scene in Lincoln, Lincoln College acquired the building after its closure and saved it from the inevitable ‘student accommodation refurb’. The college has invested a significant amount of money into renovating the building, and with this investment have given the venue an overdue change of image. The building will still play host to

the arts alongside live music, but it appears an emphasis will be put on live music shows that appeal to a much wider audience than most arts events. This bodes well for the rock community in Lincoln, as a significant portion of the events programmed fall within the rock genre, particularly ‘LINCOLN ROCKS’ on March 5th, headlined by Bad Touch, supported by Piston, White Raven Down, and more!

On March 26th The Joiners Arms, Lincoln will shake at the foundations once more with Rock Night III. With Lincoln favourites KAYLYDE heading up the bill with their fresh brand of modern hard rock, and delicately placed female led vocals, and supported by three more hard/classic rock bands. Supporting them on the night will be the new kids on Lincoln’s rock block, Velvet Queens. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them bring their usual playful ridiculousness to the night; the band are known for shenanigans

such as providing fans with ‘VQ’ branded condoms and having women’s underwear thrown at them while playing on-stage! Joining these iconic Lincoln bands for the night are Nottingham bands grunge-punk powerhouse Hex Poseur and sleaze-rock rebels Venomous Rose… we’re intrigued to see the outcome of such a punchy line-up. If you like to stretch your legs and travel to gigs outside of Lincolnshire, one show that will pique your interest will surely be: Trailblazer, on April 4 th at the legendary Nightrain in Bradford. Produced by the masterminds behind Call Of The Wild festival, this all day showcase of ten unsigned bands headlined by new wave of classic rock gods Twister, certainly looks to be an event worth checking out… and at just £13 a ticket surely it merits the road trip? On that subject, the all-rock line-up currently proposed for Call Of The Wild in midMay looks set to make it one

of the highlights of the Lincs rock calendar. The festival’s curators, Upstaged, have gone all out for their post-covid return, with COTW being headlined by some of the biggest names in the ‘New Wave Of Classic Rock’. Performing here this year are the likes of Massive Wagons, Reckless Love, and even a former Thin Lizzy member’s new band: Ricky Warwick & The Fighting Hearts, not to mention a whole host of smaller Velvet Queens bands, and at Rock Night II even some homegrown talent. It’s probably best if you book the 19 th – 22 nd of May in the diary now and buy your tickets as soon as possible because we expect this longawaited return to be a sell-out.

THE STATE OF IT!

Kris Barras band was a Rock Lynx favourite at Stonedead 2021.

It would be rude not to mention that the two-year anniversary of Rock Lynx Magazine is coming up this summer too. On the 2nd July 2022 Rock Lynx will take over the Platform, Lincoln, to bring you four of the biggest names in Lincs rock, including hometown heroes Carry The Crown, playing their only Lincoln show this year! Rumour has it there may even be an end of night bonus… a club night playing the biggest bangers from ALL genres of rock (indie through to emo) to finish off what will have already been a spectacular night to leave fans in awe and craving more. As if all these rock-packed dates weren’t enough, UPSTAGED (the production company behind COTW and Trailblazer) are also hosting Rockmantic at The Drill, Lincoln. Featuring an eclectic mix of huge rock names and local support bands, this twoday venue-based 12 ROCKLYNX.CO.UK

festival spread over Friday 19th and Saturday 20th August looks unmissable. Headlined by modern rock giants Inglorious and The Virginmarys with support from some of the most energetic up and coming bands, the weekend looks set to give the Lincoln rock scene an event it truly deserves.

Schenker, The Wildhearts, and Stone Broken filling the air with their familiar brand of crunchy classic rock, it seems like the perfect way to enjoy a long overdue festival season. It’s clear to see just from this short list, that Lincolnshire truly is starting to define itself as a rock-loving hub of distorted guitars and pounding drums, but this is just a brief overview of what the county has to offer. It’s both exciting and satisfying to see the scene that we all love growing and flourishing into something that will soon be able to hold its own against, and possibly even rival, the cities renowned for their music communities.

Following such a full summer of gigs and festivals it seems only fitting to save arguably the biggest festival till last, and what better way to see the summer out than sitting in a sun-soaked field with an ice-cold beverage watching Inglorious have performed at Stonedead some of and return to the area for Rockmantic. the biggest classic rock names coming to the UK in 2022? BANDS TO WATCH IN 2022 L.A. Sunday live at Rock Night at The Joiners Arms.

Lloyd giving it big licks at Rock Night at The Joiners Arms.

L.A. Sunday live at Rock Night at The Joiners Arms.

Words & Photos: Jordan Merrett

Although they may be brand spanking new to the scene, LA Sunday have burst out onto it! As far as crowd pleasing indie bands go, they sure know how to rock; their set at Rock Night at The Joiners Arms, Lincoln really caused a stir and considering their current releases are lo-fi bedroom indie-pop, they apparently ‘rocked up’ their set especially for the occasion.

The cool, collected frontman, told us they’re planning to release alot more and they’re continuing to record it themselves with a little help from producers to record live drums to make the tracks “raw and authentic.” L.A. Sunday have a new single coming out soon called 9AM which will implement their new production mantra and drive closer to the raw and authentic sound that they’re pushing for.

The band formed in early 2020 and have already amassed over one hudred thousand streams on all of their songs on Spotify, “I don’t know how it’s happened” remarked Lloyd, Lead Singer, who is clearly very humble about their online success. Despite their audience’s approval of their current tracks, Lloyd said “We haven’t got alot out right now, and what we’ve got out doesn’t represent LA Guitarist Finn, in the crowd Sunday.” at Rock Night at The Joiners

When talking about his own music on recordings, the singer and guitarist said you have to overcome the fact that you might not like how you sound saying that when he first heard himself on recordings he thought “I don’t like that because that sounds too much like me... but that’s fine!”

Arms, Lincoln.

At their live shows LA Sunday have built up a huge loyal, local fanbase, when questioned about how they’ve achieved this Lloyd said “being friendly is the most important thing” referencing that if people like you they will come and watch your band. “Play as much as possible” was another factor that he thinks has built their following. f you’ve followed Lincoln rock bands in recent years, you may have heard of Carry The Crown before… hell, you might already be a fan! But for anyone that needs bringing up to speed, let’s look at how the band stormed the ‘breaking’ rock scene and found themselves in some notable and downright impressive places. From the moment the band formed in late 2016, they clearly started as they meant to go on, with the release of their first EP ‘Desire’ in May of 2017. Their

song ‘Forever’ from the EP earned them airtime on both Kerrang! and BBC Radio 1, an impressive accomplishment for any band, never mind a band less than a year old. Listening to their music through the years, the experience becomes more and more satisfying with each release, as the band find their sound and hone in to what Carry The Crown truly stands for. From early bangers such as ‘Fire’ and ‘Hold Me’ from their second EP ‘Not Alone’, to later songs like ‘K A R M A’ and their latest single ‘Head Above Water’. Love or hate the band’s prolific production of pop-rock anthems, one thing can’t be denied: they write great songs. With such a solid foundation in place, it begs the question ‘what’s next?’. Rock Lynx was lucky enough to talk with Rupert Tyrer (Guitarist) Centrefold Photo: Jon Bell

from the band, about what they’ve got up their sleeve for 2022. When asked about the band’s next release and when it’s coming, Rupert was playfully reserved and couldn’t give us any specific details as they haven’t made any official announcements yet, however after a little coercion he did reveal that they do have a new single coming soon, and there will be an official music video. Rupert also revealed that the track is their first collaboration featuring a “well known youtuber” … How exciting! This clandestine approach to the band’s next release is incredibly effective at building a sense of anticipation, which makes the confession that the new track is “timid and raw” even more intriguing. It certainly sounds like whatever they have coming is going to cause a stir, Rupert even claims that “This is the biggest thing the band has done to date. We’ve bet the house on this one, we just hope it pays off.” Centrefold Graphic: Jordan Merrett

CARRY THE CROWN It’s impressive to see that CTC haven’t stopped releasing music through the pandemic, with this in mind we asked Rupert how they managed this when they were unable to get in the studio, he responded

“Since we went quiet things got hard. We had to write remotely and, I don’t want to say that cracks started to appear but, it got hard…

F*** COVID!” Given all the band’s achievements up to March 2020, it’s hard not to empathise with their position. “When COVID started we were on the cusp of breaking through to another level… then we had to stop.” It seems the guys aren’t dwelling on the past though, after a distinct deficit of gigs over the last two years they’re looking forward to getting back to what they do best; Rupert stated “We’re a live band” adding that they have always made a point of putting everything into their stage show, and something new is coming to their live element:

“we’re stepping our live game up a notch, we’ve got a brand new live show!” Rupert seems very confident that the new show is going to be a crowd pleaser, and it seems that the crowd is what they care about the most, he even said “People need to see the live show, we want

Carry The Crown smiling on the set of their latest music video shoot.

you to get your money’s worth… and more!” He also said: “we’ve actually got more new material coming than we’ve let on… This is the start of the new Carry The Crown.” When asked about his favourite live shows of the past, Rupert remembers “Bad Apples in Leeds, it was our first ever sell out show! It went off, it was everything you want a dirty, stinking show to be!” apparently the entire band had

“Big old d*cks that night!” Big old d*cks aside, Rupert listed some shows of considerable notoriety; the band have played support for the likes of Skindred and Hacktivist, and in 2018 even headlined 2Q festival at the Platform, Lincoln, where

the band are playing their only hometown show of 2022 on the 2nd July. It’s quite humbling to know that even after nearly six years of opportunities and achievements, Rupert and the band still remember the early days with fondness; He explained how the band first started with himself and James Butcher (Drums) talking about a new project before heading to the studio to see how it would go, and it clearly went well: “We jammed in a room and songs just started falling out… and I still feel like that now.” He also mentioned that at the time that they started discussing the idea, Rupert was playing in a Grime band he said

“I went from Grime to Carry The Crown in a month!” a considerable and surprising change of genre. With everything the band have said and done, it’s easy to see why the crowds are so fond of them. Carry The Crown ooze personality and give back to their fans with great songs and energetic live performances. Given the nature of their boyish humour it seems only right to end on this quote from Rupert about their plans for 2022...

2022 and why they decided to release four singles in one month? They replied: “We originally wanted to release three EP’s this year with five songs each, but LaVire’s (formerly Tides) first when Oz left, we took a gig at Bentley’s Bar, Lincoln. little break and when we came back, we just decided to release them as singles; We plan to release fourteen singles this year.”

egular Rock Lynx readers will recognise modern hard rock band, LaVire from issue two’s centrespread, well now they’re back and they have been busy! I managed to catch up with Chloe Jolivel (Lead Vocals) and Adam Perkins (Drums) for a cheeky pint while we chatted about what they’ve got in store this year, and in true LaVire style, almost every question and enquiry was met with quick-witted humour and sarcasm… As I immediately found out from their opening statement:

“LaVire are a band…” Just that, nothing more. Enquiring further to dig out some more specific details, I asked about their recent line-up change as the band originally included five members and are now down to four. These types of questions can sometimes be a touchy subject; however, their answer was surprisingly light-hearted: former Lead Guitarist, Thomas ‘Ozzy’ Osbourne decided to step down from the band as he didn’t believe that their sound required two guitars. At first Chloe, Adam, Aaron Hall (Guitar), and Aaron Smith (Bass) were shocked, but on second thought, they agreed. Oz’s departure from the band was completely amicable and they remain very good friends. Keen to find out more about LaVire’s new music I questioned them on their recent releases in February 20 ROCKLYNX.CO.UK

With so many songs being written I asked who the main songwriter was, they replied: “Aaron and Chloe, but mainly Aaron; He has a drive full of songs ready to go!” It really is insane to think they will be releasing more than a song a month, every month for the entire year! What’s even more even more shocking, and a testament to their skill as a band is: “All the songs are self-produced, together as a team.” DIY producing music can come with its own challenges however one upside that Adam delighted in talking about was the use of his favourite plug-in effect

“Big fat grind bass!” Spending so much time working in the studio takes a lot of effort, and they said the only way to get through it is to be fulled by lots of

“Krispy Kreme’s and caffeine.” Trying to get down to the more serious side of the band, I asked what they hope to achieve with their music, their answer was surprisingly sensitive and humble: “Music is a safe space where people feel among their people, we’re trying to build an honest fanbase online. We want our music to reach people that it appeals to.” The band seem dedicated to reaching an audience that their music might resonate with so that they might feel a little better with it in their lives, LaVire honestly feel as though they’re for the people, it appears they love it when fans reach out to them, adding “We always engage with people” Hearing such a kind group of people with honest intentions, it’s hard not to wish for them to do well in the future, I’m excited to see just where LaVire go next.

As far as Lincoln rock bands go, KAYLYDE are possibly the most well defined classic hard rock band; With elements of modern hard rock accompanied by crunchy classic rock style guitar and thick, heavy bass riffs all sweetly sprinkled with melodic mid-range female vocals, they achieve a refreshing take on the genre. Their somehow clean version of an otherwise ‘gritty’ sound makes it believable that this could be the next big trend in the modern rock scene.

the vibe was just right, and the room sounded great for drums! The sound of the drums can really change depending on the room!” Molly and Jake both agreed that getting along with the producer is a massively important, Molly claimed that “When we’re there with Hamish he’s like a sixth member of the band” Jake agreed and added “It’s because we have a laugh, but he’s brutally honest too, if I do a take and it’s not very good, he’ll say

To find out more about a band with such promise, I spoke with Molly Cartawick (Lead Vocals) and Jake Laming (Drums) to get some exclusive insider information. Previously KAYLYDE’s bass player Sam Young had teased to me was that the band had something in the pipeline for the future, so I jumped straight in and asked what the band have coming? Molly responded “We do have new music coming soon! We actually recorded the track at the same time as ‘See Right Through You’ in 2019, we’ve been sitting on it since then!”

“Jake your drumming’s w*nk”

This next release is highly anticipated after their last single dropped in February 2020, and with this exciting new track comes another surprise for fans… Molly added: “We’ve waited to release this one because I wanted it to be the first song with a proper music video, but with Sam’s motorbike accident and mine and Jake’s house move the break has been needed!” On their current recordings, the band have a clearly defined sound, I asked about their recording process and which studio they use and why, Jake answered “We record with Hamish Dickinson at Phoenix Studios, we did our research to find the best producers for our sound and we found Hamish. We visited the studio and fell in love with it, Photos: Tyler Rayner

Even with a motorbike crash, moving house, and a music video shoot to contend with, KAYLYDE have landed themselves some impressive live bookings in 2022 including: headlining Rock Night III, supporting Carry The Crown at The Platform, but most notably, headlining the Dead Skull stage at Call Of The Wild festival. Headlining your first festival stage is no mean feat, it takes years of work and dedication, something this band have in spades. Until 2020 KAYLYDE managed to play a lot of great live shows, and it sounds like they were only just getting started, Molly even said: “We just got this snowball rolling and then COVID happened…” a true shame that yet another band fell victim to the 2020 sh*tstorm, luckily the band seem to have their heads screwed on and plan to hit this year with full force! As this may be some readers first experience of KAYLYDE, I asked Jake to sum up their sound in a few words to entice new potential fans, he proceeded to say:

“Strange, progressive, heavy, euphoric, BIGNESS.” ROCKLYNX.CO.UK 21
