GMC Debuts Updated Canyon Mid-Size Pickup for 2021
W
ith the 2021 version of the Chevrolet Colorado mid-sized pickup announced at the end of last year, it should come as no surprise that its brother, the GMC Canyon, has done the same here early in 2020. Perhaps the biggest news to come out of the announcement is the addition of the first-ever Canyon AT4, which is a model in the Sierra fullsize lineup that boasts many off-road upgrades. On the outside, the AT4 features a bolder design with a new larger grille and red recovery hooks, while inside features Kalahari stitching and AT4 head restraint embroidery. In terms of the aforementioned off-road upgrades, the Canyon AT4 will benefit from 31-in. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, offroad tuned suspension with Advanced Hill Descent Control System, and a 4WD system with Eaton G80 Rear Automatic Locking Differential. In addition to the AT4, GMC also revealed upgrades to the Canyon Denali model which will feature a more sculpted and layered pattern on the grille in addition to 5-in. chrome assist steps, signature chrome accents OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
and Denali-exclusive 20-in. Diamond Cut aluminum wheels. Inside, the Canyon Denali will include authentic open-pore ash wood trim, aluminum dĂŠcor and unique stitching. Both the AT4 and Denali models are powered by either a best-in-class 308-horsepower 3.6L V6 or a 2.8L Duramax diesel engine that provides 369 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 GMC Canyon will be available later this year with pricing announced closer to production.

High Stakes Rugged Ridge and Island Off Road team up to build an incredible Wrangler for the True North Jeep Giveaway
hen Rugged Ridge Canada approached Island Off Road to build the True North Jeep Giveaway, who W were we to say no? We quickly set out to find the ultimate vehicle to build, and we needed to find a perfect starting point. Something with a clean straight body, not beat too bad, and able to showcase all the cool add-ons and accessories Rugged Ridge has to offer.
We chose a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It was perfect. We wanted to build a “weekend warrior. Something that would drive well during the week, but handle the challenges thrown at it on the weekend.
Story and photos by Jonathan Buchanan, additional photos by Russell Purcell
We already knew we wanted to run a thirty-five-inch-tall tire, so we chose the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3’s and mounted them to a set of 17-in. XHD aluminum hub centric wheels in gunmetal grey. Next, it was time to add some protection. We needed stout bumpers able to carry the Rugged Ridge 9,500-lb Nautica winch with
First on the order of to do’s was the suspension. It was stripped, cleaned and made ready for re-assembly. We completely rebuilt the front and rear differentials, adding Rugged Ridge heavy-duty ball joints and new brakes all around. We added the Rugged Ridge Boulder Aluminum Diff covers front and rear for ease of fluid changes and impact resistance. For lift we went with their 4-in. coil suspension lift. This kit is complete with a rear track bar brace (not synthetic rope, as well as provide recovery points. What better than the XHD Modular bumper system. We used the XHD centre section bumper with the double X Stryker and stubby end caps on the front, and the XHD Xtreme heavy-duty rear bumper. Due to the weight of the spare tire and the weak JK tailgate, we also added the Spartacus HD tire carrier. For rock protection we chose the XHD
normally found in other brands), front sway bar disconnects (also not normally standard), heavy-duty extended control arms and urethane bushings. We also added the heavy-duty front adjustable track bar and frame brace kit, dropped pitman arm and front steering stabilizer. Once installed, these components made handling extremely better. Rugged Ridge goes the extra mile; also included in their kits are a pair of grab handles, windshield sticker and an owner’s manual case. It’s the little things that matter.

Rock Sliders with integrated steps. The fit-and-finish was second to none. We have no worries about hitting rocks or rubbing trees with these sliders.

It was now time to personalize the True North Giveaway Jeep. We chose the Spartan Grill with black mesh screen, Elite headlight, tail light guards, fuel door and door handle inserts. These textured powder-coated aluminum accessories added the rugged look we were after. The install was easy with no drilling required, and the use of factory mounting points. To help clear those Mickey Thompson tires, we also replaced the factory Wrangler flares with the rugged looking Hurricane Flat fenders. We picked the black textured finish to match the finish of the bumpers and sliders. Why have a Jeep if you never take the top down? True North originally came with the factory hardtop, which had seen twelve years of abuse and was ready for a change. We had no choice but to install the Rugged Ridge Exo Top. This top is the most versatile top on the market. It allows you to mount gear to the Exo cage while still being able to conveniently lower, raise or remove the top. With a 300-lb capacity, we will never have an issue carrying the off-road goodies we need. We wanted to be able to night wheel, so lighting was a necessity. We mounted the hood light bar kit with 5 LED lights as well as the Elite Fast Track 50-in. LED light bar and A-pillar kit. This kit was amazing. It gave us the ability to have a 50-in. LED light bar across the top of the windshield, while providing a track system up the Apillars to mount lights, GoPro’s, mirrors or even antennas. We chose to mount an additional 4 LED lights angled to see well in to the darkness alongside of us.

To top off the exterior, we installed a hood-mounted off-road jack holder, aluminum hood hold-downs, and a hood protector. Now it was time to address the interior. We stripped the old rotten carpet in favour of Bedrug’s liner kit. This is not a carpet kit. Bedrug’s liner is made of Polypropylene. It’s mildew and stain resistant while being 100-percent waterproof. We also added Rugged Ridge All-Terrain Floor and Cargo liners, along with neoprene seat covers front and rear with a matching console arm rest. To house our electrical switches, we used the A-pillar switch pod loaded with colour-coded rocker switches. We didn’t upgrade engine

performance, but we did need it to sound good, so we installed the stainless steel axle-back dual-tip exhaust system, and for those deep water crossings, we went with the XHD Modular Snorkel kit. This kit can be installed with a low-mount snorkel, but we wanted that aggressive off-road look and went with the high mount with Ram intake.
Rugged Ridge is a leader in Jeep accessories. Their quality, fit and finish were ideal for this build. Island Off Road was proud to be a part of such a great build. We only wish we were the winners of the True North Jeep Giveaway.

Winter Wheeling
Being safe and prepared Story and photos by Spencer Whitney
E
ach autumn, quiet excitement ripples through the off-road community in Western Canada. Many of us wait patiently, watching weather reports for signs of the approaching winter, and others venture out each weekend in search of freezing temperatures. Then, suddenly, it hits - Snow! Winter wheeling is a popular pastime among the off-road crowd, and with good reason: below-zero conditions transform the landscape, turning tired trails into new challenges. Snow brings with it a completely different experience in a 4x4, one that can be enjoyable and very challenging, depending on how you’re equipped. This past December, in the quiet days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, I went out with some friends on a snowbound day trip to the far reaches of the Squamish and Elaho River valleys. My Defender didn’t make an appearance due to a planned axle disassembly for maintenance, so I rode shotgun in a built-up Mercedes G500. With us were a few Jeeps and a Ford Raptor, along with one brave (or crazy?) individual in a windshield-less side-by-side. The G-class is well known for its off-road abilities, but I hadn’t yet experienced one in the snow. Our own Canadian Forces chose the underlying platform (known internally by its designation as LUVW: Light Utility Vehicle, Wheeled) for light-duty service at home and abroad. While there are some significant differences, the basic design is similar to the road-going G-class vehicles you might see in swankier parts of town. However, without a steady supply of military surplus G’s (they’re holding on to them for dear life), it’s actually very expensive to build one of these rigs up. But if done right, they’re a very comfortable and capable way to get around! We set off toward the furthest limits of pavement in Squamish. Here the valley road turns to dirt, and usually by the time winter sets in, this forestry road is in poor shape from relentless rain. This year was no exception, and there wasn’t much more than a few hundred metres of smooth gravel road throughout the whole day. Luckily this G500 was equipped with a 2-inch Old Man Emu lift kit that soaked 18 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
mountains) but it also tends to be more forgiving. Sliding into a snowbank usually causes less damage than rocks! That said, it can also be very challenging and deceiving, introducing traction problems that you may never experience if your rig stays on pavement for the winter, and we experienced this first hand on our way up that first mountain.
up all but the most violent potholes, and after a few kilometres, the road surface turned to softer and more comfortable packed snow. This is a well-traveled road but still requires some caution - a few sections have unexpected curves or banked corners that don’t help with stability. Our first attempt at finding deeper snow was to take a spur road toward one of the many logging cut blocks that adorn the mountains on either side around the river valley. Snow is popular wheeling terrain not just because it looks great (who doesn’t like a good photo op with some snowy trees and
As we climbed this particular trail, a long steep hill appeared in front of us. Made confident by a fresh set of perfect tire tracks in front of us, we kept pressing on - and slowly lost every bit of momentum! Despite every traction aid engaged and the pedal to the floor, gravity eventually took over - as soon as the G500 stopped, it began sliding back down the hill, taking with it one of the Jeeps. Somehow, we came to a stop right at a curve in the road. Had the mass of the Mercedes been allowed to carry on, we could have very well ended up off the edge with serious damage. With three lockers right from the factory - front, rear, and centre (for locking the part-time system in to full four-wheel-drive) - you’d think the Mercedes was invincible off-road. This is mostly true, and what the G-Class lacks in flex it makes up for in sheer traction, as well as the power of a big German V8 engine. Along with the previously mentioned lift, this one was equipped with a Front Runner roof rack, Lightforce off-road lights, a German-made front bumper,

and a custom-made rear bumper. (Accessories for the G are hard to come by, so for an OEMlooking front winch bumper that could hold a 12,000-lb Warn Zeon winch, the owner had to source something from Germany.) However, all this was put to the test in the snow. Even with capable BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires, the Mercedes (and others in the group) just simply couldn’t maintain traction on that particular trail. After assessing the minimal damage to both vehicles and making sure that everyone was okay, we checked out the hill by foot. It turns out that recent snow was covering up a significant amount of ice, and we could barely even walk on it. In these areas there’s a thaw-freeze cycle that can change road conditions by the hour - and this is why it’s important to not only be prepared, but to constantly make yourself aware of the road conditions around you. In this case we were led astray by evidence of another vehicle having possibly been up the mountain that morning. (It turned out to be equipped with studded tires and was much lighter than any of our rigs.) It’s also critical to remember that being in a 4x4 - even a heavily built-up one - doesn’t make us invincible and unstoppable! Now, we weren’t about to give up on a day in the snow because of one mishap, so after coordinating with the rest of the group that we would maintain more distance and go a little slower on the way down. we decided to push further up the valley roads, which are certainly 20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
Once we’d had our fill of riverbank wheeling, we headed back down toward Squamish and our homes. By this time it was getting dark - and this is possibly one of the most important factors when winter wheeling. The days are much shorter so being prepared for darkness is essential. The Lightforce “Striker” quad-LED setup on
less treacherous than the steep, narrow side roads in the area. Lucky for us, the Squamish and Elaho valleys offer some spectacular views and photo ops. Most popular would be the long bridge across the Squamish River at about the 35 km mark, and the waterfall about 5 km from the start of Elaho River road. On the way to this second spot, you’ll see some great vistas of the Elaho Canyon. Further up the Elaho River road, there are some popular 4x4-only camping spots on the river bed. Since this is a low-water time of year we thought we might try driving out to the river bed - we weren’t disappointed! The short trail to the camp sites is a well-traveled and deeply-rutted path with a couple of big mud pits. Some playing in here was necessary - another factor of snow wheeling is the colder temperatures, so one of the Jeeps discovered that driving on a frozen mud hole sometimes means that you suddenly drop through ice and have to use a little bit of back-and-forth to get over the ice chunks and out!
this G-class featured two each of flood and spot lenses, mounted up high for optimal beam performance. Thanks to good lights, we didn’t worry about wildlife or any other unseen hazards on our way back to dry pavement. While I was happy I didn’t get my own rig involved in a minor trail accident, I did spend the drive home reflecting on how I might prepare for this myself. I would certainly need to add some lights to my truck, and as a precaution I would bring a supply of food and water in case we had to spend the night somewhere in the snow. With a little bit of preparedness and some well-equipped friends, you can have a lot of fun in the snow - just make sure you remember that just like on city streets, winter conditions can change everything at a moment’s notice.

ock and roll stars and special cars seem to go together naturally. “Rocket 88” was the name of a 1951 tune that is generally credited with being the first rock and roll song. Cars with names from “Maybelline” to “Little Nash Rambler” made the Top Ten charts. Elvis loved his tail-finned Cadillacs and John Lennon had his psychedelic Bentley. Rock and roll drummer Travis Barker also had a customized ’72 Chevy Blazer in his car collection–or at least he had it until the recent Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. Rock and roll drummer He sold it there for Travis Barker. $93,500. We have to believe that is now the world’s record price for a ’72 Blazer and it is going to be hard to beat that price for a long time. “Travis Barker” may not be a common household name to some people, but to those who love contemporary rock and roll music, he is one of the bestknown drummers to ever come down the pike. Barker has been beating the skins for a long time. He was born in 1975 on this writer’s 28th birthday and began playing the drums at an early age. 22 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
Barker’s first significant professional gig came in 1996 when he performed for the Aquabats. Two years later, he left that group for Blink182, a band that hit it big with “Enema of the State” in 1999. Barker has demonstrated a wide variety of musical skills and even got into acting with the MTV reality series named “Meet the Barkers.” In 2008, a plane he was in crashed after an aborted take-off attempt, killing the pilot and others. Barker survived and recovered from that and went on to release his own debut solo album called “Give the Drummer Some” in 2011. Barker kept working with rappers on Yelawolf, Asher Roth and Nottz, as well as with Blink-182 and the Transplants. As far as his love of cars and trucks, like Elvis Presley, Barker’s taste in automobiles was originally focused mostly on Cadillacs. However, he had a passion for both prewar and postwar editions, rather than just the ‘50s fin-mobiles that Elvis liked. GM LS3 V8 has considerably more power than the truck’s stock engine.
Desirable, final-year example of GM’s immensely successful 1967-1972 Blazer.
Although Cadillac models dominated Barker’s automotive passions and despite the fact that his personal car collection is filled with original and customized Cadillac models, he also developed a love of certain Chevrolet products, including Blazers. His customized 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer had been resto-modded and personalized to his tastes. The truck featured a new LS3 V8 engine and a four-speed GM automatic transmission. It rode on a raised suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and had Black Rock wheels wrapped in size 35x12.50 Nitto “Trail Grappler” tires.
Retaining its great factory original looks, Barker’s custom K5 Blazer provided far better performance than the SUV came with from Chevrolet. The brand new GM LS3 525-hp V8 that was substituted under the Blazer’s hood upped the vehicle’s power output substantially. The high-tech GM engine was matched up to a three-speed automatic transmission for cruising ease. Barker was busy and only 1,962 miles were put on the Blazer since it was completely restored and treated to the upgrades mentioned above. After being updated, the Travis Barker Blazer was fitted with the lifted suspension for better ground clearance. The Blazer’s exterior was refinished in businesslike Gunmetal Gray, which looks great and includes features such as the 7-inch Vision VX headlights. The upgraded interior features seats with flawless black leather upholstery, air conditioning and a set of Dakota Digital gauges. It also was equipped with a custom aftermarket sound system, just in case additional entertainment should ever be required. Before the Scottsdale auction, Barrett-Jackson said that it was thrilled to offer the Blazer and other select vehicles from Travis Barker’s collection at the 2020 Scottsdale Auction. “Coming from the care of a true enthusiast with a keen eye for great design and engineering, they are now ready for new owners to enjoy and appreciate with that same uncompromising passion,” the Barrett-Jackson spokesperson said.
The Blazer’s exterior was finished in Gunmetal Gray and featured 7-inch Vision VX series headlights. Inside the Blazer, a new custom interior featured black leather seats, air conditioning, Dakota Digital gauges and a custom aftermarket sound system. Very nicely representing the Chevrolet marque, Barker’s custom 1972 K5 Blazer crossed the auction block as a highly desirable, final-year example of GM’s immensely successful 1967-1972 “Glamour Series” light-duty SUVs. A Barrett Jackson spokesperson said, “It actually stands as a great first-generation K5 Blazer and a great example of one of the most influential and versatile sport-utility vehicles ever produced.”

Canadian Trails for Winter Wheeling and Powersports Play Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko
T
he official reign of winter may be December to March, but in all reality it’s much, much longer for those who reside in the northernmost points of the continent. Thankfully, Canadians have the good fortune of enjoying spectacular mountain views, pristine alpine lakes, diverse wildlife, and various outdoor recreation year-round. So, trade in that warm fire for a parka and grab your off-road gear, because we’ve lined up a few of the country’s best trails for winter adventure. Prairie Creek Provincial Recreation Area Popular among local off-roaders, the Prairie Creek Provincial Recreation Area remains a somewhat hidden gem in west-central Alberta, tucked within the province’s diverse landscape. While use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs) is prohibited within the park itself, Prairie Creek serves as a comfortable, scenic stop along the way to nearby trails frequented by 4x4 enthusiasts and snowmobilers. Expect a fair amount of difficulty. According to Backroad Mapbook, Canada’s #1 choice for backcountry maps and outdoor recreation guides, “Take your time exploring the informal trails in the area—with plenty of steep terrain, water crossings, and other challenges, you won’t want to rush yourself.” Easier trails are relatively close by, including Lost Knife Trail, which is located approximately two hours south, but riders should confirm seasonal access first. As the Ontario Federation of 4WD Recreationists (OF4WD) points out, it’s important to consult your local trail groups and government agencies during the winter months, as many Canadian trails are turned over to snowmobile enthusiasts from December 1 – May 1. “These trails are off-limits for 4WD use, and you could be charged if you travel on the trails without a valid snowmobile permit,” but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost for wheelers. 24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
Whipsaw Trail The Whipsaw Creek Trail is a 103-km trek that features plenty of obstacles to flex, twist, and get that 4x4 good and dirty. Located in the province of British Columbia—roughly four hours east of Vancouver—Whipsaw is well-renowned as a Jeeper’s paradise. Considered one of the top 4x4 destinations in Western Canada, Whipsaw is a tough trail even for experienced wheelers. Mid-August is recommended as the best time to visit, but “if you want the adventure of a lifetime, you can run the Whipsaw trail in the middle of winter when the place is covered in snow and the temperatures hovers around freezing. You will have to bring your chainsaw to cut through fallen trees blocking your path. This trail offers some amazing views and challenging terrain, so prep that Jeep, charge up the camera batteries, and clear those media cards. You don’t want to miss any of the action,” explains FOUR WHEELER. The Province of Quebec Did you know that Québec offers the largest ATV trail network in North America? Yeah, me neither. For decades, ATVs have been a vehicle of choice to easily access the dense forests of Québec and explore its beauty year-round. “Summers are incredibly popular with off-roaders since the terrain is a combination of rocky, challenging hills with scenic views. Winter months are, of course, better suited for snowmobiles than

4x4s, with the occasional heavy snow the region can receive. A number of trails and circuits are available to choose from, both from the Centre Du Quebec and also the Chaudière Appalaches regions, where loops range from 80-435 km,” according to Offroad.com. The Chaudiere-Appalache region—located north of Maine and New Hampshire and comprised of cities like Lac-Etchemin, Levis, Montmagny, Saint-Georges, and Thetford Mines—is easily accessible by vehicle or ATV. The region boasts 2,253 km of trails during winter, which are marked and groomed by various clubs. According to locals, the geographic diversity of the region is absolutely unrivalled and a must-visit to see and believe. Concession Lake, Clarington, Ontario With great bass fishing in the summer and trout fishing in the win-
ter, the Concession Lake OHV Trail near Trent Lakes, Ontario, Canada is a popular choice for off-roaders who appreciate a little bit of everything, from rocky areas and mud to elevation changes and deep-water pools. Rated moderate difficulty, this trail is best traveled from March through October - in the Great White North, that guarantees snow on the ground. “This trail is just under three hours from Toronto. It’s a relatively open trail that offers a variety of terrain, including swampy areas and mud crossings, rock crawling, and tight trees. There are definitely some obstacles to navigate, and some elevation changes that off-road enthusiasts sure seem to enjoy. This riding offers some open areas to rest and look around as well,” explains Off-road.com. Ironically, as the off-road community continues to grow in size and scope, access to public land continues to shrink. Since trail access is subject to change, be sure to always call ahead and confirm closures, change in entrance points, or reservation for snowmobile use only after a certain date. Remember to practice proper trail safety and always leave Mother Nature in better shape than she was found.

hen you think of it, the U.S. Army had a lot to do with starting the move to off-road vehicles that has evolved into the sports and hobbies that we enjoy today. Whether it’s off-road racing, overlanding or conquering a treacherous obstacle course with your SUV, you can draw a direct line back to the motorization of the military in the early 1900s. The first practical four-wheel-drive vehicle invented on this side of the Atlantic was a car made by the Badger Four Wheel Drive Auto Co. (later FWD) of Clintonville, Wis. About a half dozen were made, before the company leaders decided to focus on manufacturing four-wheel-drive trucks. FWD trucks performed well in United States Army cross-country trials, which led to the purchase of an FWD chassis for testing.
Kaiser-Jeep M725 Ambulance is one of 3.700 built in 1967-1969 years. With a body mounted on back, it became an Army Scout Car and proved the benefits of four-wheel drive. It outperformed three two-wheel drive trucks in a 1,500-mile test early in 1912. But the future didn’t look great for four-wheel drive until the U.S. Army started looking for trucks it could use in its “Punitive Expedition” into Mexico to chase the bandit Pancho Villa in 1916. Based on its testing, the U.S. Army was sold on the reliability and off-road capabilities of the four-wheel-drive trucks, so when our European Allies entered World War I in the summer of 1914, the British Army quickly ordered 50 of them. Then, the U.S. Army ordered 147. By 1917, America had become embroiled in the war and FWD committed its total output to the Army, which ordered 3,750 FWD Model B 3-ton trucks.

From those beginnings, the military became more and more motorized and by the time of World War II, that led to the development of
Willys made 645,000 of these MB Jeeps with “Go Devil” engines from 1941-1945.
The Willys M38A1 was made from 1950-1957 with 80,290 built. the Jeep, which was actually designed by a small Pennsylvania car company named American Bantam. The Army realized that Bantam did not have the facilities to make as many Jeeps as it needed, so Willys-Overland and Ford actually produced the bulk of the Jeeps that were sent all over the world to help fight the “bad guys.” Of course, there were many other off-road vehicles utilized during WWII, but the Jeep is the one that really started the offroading hobbies in the postwar era. It was small enough to fit in just about any garage, and right after the war ended, you could buy surplus military Jeeps for under $100. Plus, there were a lot of them to buy. Today, four of those early Jeeps—along with about 30 other multi-wheel-drive vintage military vehicles—are displayed at the Military Veterans Museum and Education Center in Oshkosh, Wis. Dave Kersztyn is President of the museum. He and Dale Anderson welcomed Off Road Plus to the museum’s John E. Kuenzl Motor Pool, the largest military vehicle collection in Wisconsin. The off-road-capable vehicles housed there include Willys and Kaiser Jeeps, a Willys ambulance, troop carriers, a Kaiser tanker, an IH wrecker and a replica Viet Nam War-era gun truck named Brutus. The Military Veterans Museum and Education Center is operated by dedicated volunteers, including mechanics who are responsible for the upkeep of the military vehicles displayed there. There are about 35 vehicles and pieces of equipment in the motorpool ranging from a small M274A Willys 4x4 ½-ton mechanical mule to an M54 5-ton truck. There is one of each generation of military Jeeps including a WWII Willys MB. The original Brutus gun truck was used in the Vietnam War. It was built in 1969 and was used from January of the same year until May 1972. It had a 7.62mm gun at the rear, as well as two forward .50-caliber machine guns. The replica of the Brutus on display at the Military Veterans Museum’s motor pool was created by around 20 volunteers.
The project was started by one of the original drivers of Brutus, a man named Roger Blink. About 3,000 people per year visit the Museum. The majority are veterans or veterans’ families. Visitors recommend the guided tour because many facts and stories are included. In addition to military vehicles, on display in another part of the museum are uniforms and artifacts from the Arizona and Wisconsin battleships. There is also a small gift shop. “Friendly people, an interesting collection and well worth one to two hours of your time,” wrote one visitor who had stopped at the Museum and obviously enjoyed it. The Military Veterans Museum and Education Center is open to the public for free, but small donations are appreciated. Any and all donations help pay for the upkeep involved in Museum operations. The regular Museum hours are Friday thru Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information about the Museum call (920) 426-8615. Kersztyn said the Museum hosts many groups from elementary and high school students to members of clubs. “We have people coming in for various reasons and events,” Kersztyn emphasized. “We would really love to host a Jeep Club or a Jeep tour if such a group was open to something like that.”
Jeeps were also used by Armed Forces medical units.

FIRST LOOK: TESLA CYBERTRUCK
Electrifying
Story by Benjamin Yong, photos courtesy of Tesla

ho would have thought in 2020 that the biggest news to come out of the truck segment would be a zeroemissions pickup made by a technology company? Well here we are, and Tesla has recently announced they are building just that. In late November, Elon Musk took to the stage in California amid much fanfare to introduce the Cybertruck, the sixth model in the all-electric lineup. Purely based on aesthetics, it’s hard to believe the metallic and trapezoidal vehicle is poised to go up against established old-timers such as the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado.
“Trucks have been the same for a very long time. Like 100 years,” said Musk addressing a full house at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, located southwest of Los Angeles. “We wanted to try something different.” That said, MSRP is in the ballpark of its competition. Tesla’s entry starts at roughly $50,000 ($39,900 USD) compared to $48,000 for a mid-range 2020 F-150 Lariat or Silverado 1500 LT. There’s also a 6.5-foot bed offering 100 cubic feet of storage, too — although concealed by an aerodynamic motorized tonneau cover complete with integrated solar panels. As many others have observed, the Cybertruck, measuring 2,027 millimetres wide and standing 1,095 millimetres tall, appears to be lifted straight out of another time period. In fact, Musk himself has previously said styling influence came from films including Blade Runner and The Spy Who Loved Me, the 10th installment in the 007 franchise. Boasting harder edges than a park bench, the body is crafted out of allegedly bullet-proof (.38 calibre) “ultra-hard 30-times cold-rolled stainless steel,” the same material used on the rockets of sister company SpaceX. Even the glass is supposed to be stronger than the kind usually found on a typical pickup.
32 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
Unfortunately, a demonstration of the above claim did not go well during the presentation. Head designer Franz Von Holzhausen came out and threw a metal ball against a side window, which cracked immediately. “Well, maybe that was a little too hard,” says a sheepish Musk in response, adding a later fix will be applied. A thin blade of LEDs at the front serve as headlights, and a similar strip at the rear, the taillights. And nope, Tesla has made the decision to forego a conventional rear win-
dow, instead utilizing cameras for visibility when the bed is covered. The vehicle sits atop four-inch-high adaptive dampening suspension and chunky black solid wheels, easily passing for a set lifted straight off a Hot Wheels car. Seating inside accommodates six occupants, who are greeted with a familiar giant 17-inch touchscreen display controlling the usual infotainment and climate settings, as well as stuff you’d find on a typical smartphone like a calendar and web browser. And as on a mobile device, users

may pinch and swipe to their heart’s content, and update software wirelessly, over-the-air. Three trims are available. The base is a single-motor/rear-wheel drive configuration, capable of traveling 402 kilometres on a single charge and getting from 0 to 100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds. The next spec up is dual-motor/allwheel drive, and the top-of-the-line model is a tri-motor/all-wheel drive setup, the latter possessing a total range of 804 kilometres and a quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds. Topping up the battery is a simple affair: plug-in at home, or at any of the brand’s 15,000-plus Superchargers.

First Bronco The prototype
It doesn’t get lots of attention until people understand what it is.
Nothing fancy inside.
Story and photos by John Gunnell
I
n 1966, Ford dove into the fast-growing off-road vehicle market with its all-new sports utility vehicle, the Bronco. The Bronco was a clean sheet design and shared little with any other Ford product at the time. It was equally unique in the marketplace. With its trim proportions, advanced coil spring front suspension and available Pickup, Wagon and Roadster body styles, plus a myriad of factory options, the Bronco was the first sports utility vehicle to truly offer sportiness, a fact not overlooked in Ford’s marketing of the day. With its 92-inch wheelbase and a scant 34-foot turning circle, the Gen 1 Bronco was an ideal off-road machine. Those same attributes also made it just as entertaining on a highway. It was exceptionally well suited to either plowing snow or plowing through it to get to the ski resort. Early Broncos found great success in off-road racing events, conquering everything from the Mint 400 to the Baja 1000. More importantly, the early Broncos produced from 1966 to 1977 had soul. People loved them for their charm, their pluck, their ability to constantly punch above their weight and their ability to do these things in ways that made every minute behind the wheel a fun experience. White flares have been bolted on the rear fender.
For all these reasons and more, the 2017 Milwaukee Concours d’Elegance presented a special class for early Broncos. Some of the examples featured in the FEB/MAR 2020 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 39
The prototype is certainly no show-condition truck.
Early Broncos looked tall and narrow. lakeside car show included special interest models and historically significant Broncos. Tim Hulick of Indianola, Iowa, brought a turquoise-coloured 1966 Bronco Roadster to the event. Referred to as the U13 model (the last three digits of the VIN number) Hulick’s Roadster features many first-year-only items such as unique hub caps and bumpers, a distinctive tailgate, silver upholstery, a gray painted dashboard and more. The very early Bronco Roadsters used bodies made by Budd Body Company and had unique touches like an “eyebrow” grille, transfer case shift levers topped with a patterned knob, front
transaxle covers fitted with a square fill plug, and forward-facing rear shock absorbers. Only 4,090 Roadsters were produced by Ford for model-year 1966. The first Bronco ever built was a 1966 “Half-Cab” model that now belongs to Seth Burgett, the owner of Gateway Bronco. This timeworn, unrestored truck is the first Bronco built. It was constructed in Ford’s pre-production plant in Michigan. Burgett’s Bronco has been verified to be the one that Donald Frey used. It appears in Ford’s original literature for the Bronco and was the first Bronco to feature Sport trim. Eventually, Carroll Shelby came to own the prototype Bronco.

It’s obvious the Bronco hasn’t been babied. The story of this vehicle begins in 1966 with the construction of a Teal Green six-cylinder half-cab prototype Bronco at Ford’s pre-production plant in Allen Park, Michigan. The truck soon moved on to the Shelby American facility in Los Angeles, California and underwent a few changes, not the least of which was shoehorning a V8 under the SUV’s hood. So, instead of just being the first Bronco, it was also the first V8-powered Bronco (as well as the first Bronco with the Sport Trim package.) In addition to the engine swap, the prototype was also refinished in a special red-and-white paint scheme. Carroll Shelby used this Bronco from 1967 to 1977, during which
Two-tone vinyl bucket seats and ugly brown carpets. time it was kept at his ranch in Texas. The first registration of the vehicle was in 1967 and it was registered to Hi-Performance Motors. After Shelby American had used the truck for ten years, it made its way to the Christmas Mountain Land & Cattle Company ranch near Terlingua, Texas. A ranch hand named Harold Wynn frequently took the little work truck to be serviced at a Ford factory dealership in Alpine, Texas. This dealership was owned by Vincent “Vinnie” Yakubanski, who became the next owner of the Bronco prototype. 41 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2020
