How has the culture and ambition of cycling changed and how do people perceive it today?
What is your work about?
The direction of my approach shall be experimental and broad. I want to keep all possible outcomes open and not focus on just one. The topic that inspires and interest me would be the different cultures behind cycling. Where there are multiple ‘genres’ of cycling you can find multiple cultures too. I am also interested in the adventurous aspect of cycling. A bicycle can take you anywhere with enough determination and will power.

I want to focus on print, film and production where evidence of graphic design and communication is strong. The outcome should hopefully inspire my design as I want to follow a career into print and mixed media within a cycling community. I want to use this opportunity to explore every link between culture and adventure. If I create design based around my passion I will no longer see it as a ‘chore’ or ‘brief’ but will incorporate it into my hobby and desire to achieve. The main physical outcome I want to achieve is to have a successful publication that appeals to all. I have a strong passion for typography and photography so would like to include these within it. Exploring and experimenting keeps things interesting and alive, therefore evidence of exploration shall feature heavily within all the outcomes. The design outcomes needs to appeal to a vast audience, of all age ranges, so secondary and primary research shall play a key role whilst gathering information. I would like use both traditional and digital images within my publications, film and productions. Modern architecture, design, symmetry and optical illusions really inspire me so hopefully this will be evident in my outcomes.
The process for gathering inspiration began long ago whilst reading a number or publications including; Dirt, Ride UK BMX, MBUK and Boneshaker. There are many dedicated websites and films that all focus on a different approach to the cycling world. Factory Media are leading in the cycling magazine industry. Their publications are constantly full of incredible photography matched with smart design.

Being local to Bristol I would like to explore designers that create work here. Such as Peloton Design, Boneshaker and Gavin Strange’s (Jam Factory) ‘BoikzMoind’. Gavin has created so many outcomes for BoikzMoind which is really inspiring and motivating. I have already been in contact with Boneshaker and formed a relationship with them, which led to designing spreads for their November issue. The spreads are focused around one of Alistair Humphreys’ adventures who is keen cyclist. I would like to get in contact with him and find out what inspires him to do what he does. Within the short future I plan to contact, and interview, Gavin Strange and Peloton to find out more about there recent projects as well as any up and coming ones. Peloton have had a major impact in the world of cycling within their design. Creating work for the UCI BMX World Championships, the Tour of Britain and gathering companies to promote cycling during the Olympic year. Bristol hosts many cycling events and activities such as the Bristol Cycle Festival in summer. Being named the first cycling city in Britain, and ranking in the top 10 in the world,
I think it is a perfect subject for the location.

Hopefully after a successful graduation, and with a strong portfolio, I would like to become a designer for a local cycling publication and/or project. Once I have proved myself I would then like to lead onto a bigger nationwide, or worldwide, publication within the extreme sport industry. Being part of a bicycle production has always been an ambition of mine so would also like to investigate those possibilities. One bicycle company in particular is Charge Bikes, based in Frome. Their design and work ethic has a lot more care and precision compared to a majority of others, so I would like to strive towards becoming part of their design team. To start my study I would like to document my own adventure. Whilst recording everything from sights, sounds and what I come across. I shall turn it into a publication and film piece which will hopefully lead me in the right direction for collecting primary research and gathering content.
