Best tips to prevent depression

Don’t take on too much While staying busy isn’t a problem, doing too much, too soon could be. Feeling overwhelmed creates stress, and stress is a risk factor for depression. What’s more, stressful experiences can make the symptoms of anxiety and depression additionally severe.

Exercise regularly One of the best ways to prevent depression? Exercise. “Exercise appears to be an antidepressant in its own right and may act like an antidote to stress,”

Work on a positive attitude Is your glass half empty? It can help to try to have a more positive attitude. In fact, certain depression treatments, such as CBT, can help you develop a more upbeat outlook – although this treatment doesn’t work for everyone.

Prevention

Take care of your health Now is the time to focus on both your mental and physical health, because the mind-body connection plays a role in depression. “The more we take care of ourselves, the less vulnerable we might become to depression, as well as to a recurrence,” says Dr. Wood.

Watch your diet Diet and exercise go hand in hand when it comes to maintaining mental and physical well-being. “A low-fat diet, rich in fish, especially omega-3s, and folic acid can be helpful for mood. And avoiding alcohol and minimizing caffeine use is also helpful,” says Dr. Marusak.

Reconnect Depression can make you feel alone, so it’s important to reconnect with friends and family. “We know that for all aspects of wellness, community has a healing and protective effect,” says Dr. Wood.

Build your self-esteem While self-esteem isn’t something you can grow overnight—learning to accept yourself takes time—there are things you can do if you’ve lost that loving feeling. For example, make sure you spend time doing things you enjoy, and try to surround yourself with people whom you like and make you feel good about yourself.

Talk to people Many people don’t want to talk about depression because they think they should be able to handle it on their own, or don’t want to burden others. But confiding in close friends, a spouse, or family member can give you the social support you need to stay on the path to recovery.

Do you believe that having more money would make it easier to feel relaxed?

Sitting somewhere nice outside. Reading a book, drawing. Or a little gentle exercise.

Do something to take my mind off of what’s bothering me. Or to be surrounded by friends, workout, read a book, or take a nap. Drawing, or watching a film.

Relaxing somewhere far out in the countryside listening to music, where there are no other people for miles. Drawing, or watching a film.

At the pub, in the sunshine.

Sitting by a fire on a beach with a few friends and some nice music.

Relaxing by myself in the peace and quiet.

Walking and taking photos. Or talking over a nice drink with some friend friends.

Just a nice, gentle walk by myself or with others.

Being around people out in the fresh air.

Riding a bike or reading a book.

Lounging around in bed and watching a film.

Any time off work is relaxing.

Walking somewhere new with the dog.

Sitting outside in the sun with a cider and some music.

What my results suggest Whilst collecting results from my survey I can see a link between being outside and feeling relaxed. I carried out my survey across a wide range of ages to get the most from the publics response. It has showed me that people like to be out in the fresh air wether they are exercising, or just walking. My research shows that people also like to socialise with their friends or new people. I would like to use these three elements to develop my idea towards preventing depression and anxiety. Being active and staying social whilst being out in the fresh air seems to be some of the best ways of preventing mental health issues.

Strava is a smartphone application, and website, that tracks the progress of an athletes run or cycle via GPS. It is free to use and available for everyone to use at any level. There is the option to upgrade, which includes more features, to get the most out of your workout.

It also displays your personal records on certain segments (small parts of the road) and ranks you within a leader board.

Once you download Strava you will be asked to set up a profile. Your homepage shows how many runs, or cycles, you have done and how many miles you have covered.

Research

You are also able to share the results through a number of social networking sites.

Strava keeps a record of all your rides where you can see how far you have travelling with your average, and maximum, speeds. It also tracks how many feet you have climbed over the course of your ride.

Strava // Smartphone Screenshots

You are also able to view your progress online via strava’s website. This shows you a more in-depth view of your activity. There is also the option to create your own segments and challenge other riders, or runners, to take part it them.

I think the application accompanied the idea really well as it motivates and rewards for such a simple task.

The ‘Gromit Unleashed’ application was a great success around Bristol. It encouraged everyone, of all ages, to follow and find gromit sculptures dotted around various locations.

The application looks smart and sleek whilst keeping a very simple layout and design.

I really like the layout, colour scheme and simplicity of the Ribbon application. It has been very well designed and presented and immediately grabs the audiences attention.

Without even reading about the application you have a feel for what it does which really invites people to use it.

The ‘A Capella Loops’ advertisement works really well by capturing the audience without showing the actual product. The motion piece displays what the product can do and just how easy it is to create music by just using your voice. The piece is targeted at everyone with any ability. There is a really effective colour palette and a strong use of visual animated shapes and typography. It has inspired me to create a strong visual piece to accompany my final design. I would like to use a similar method of attracting people without showing too much of the application.

Very early stages of my initial idea!

Once you get to the location will alert you and give you tips on what to do within the area. The app will always be based around relaxation so there will be no nasty surprises once you’ve reached the location.

Your route shall be mapped with start and finish points. There shall also be a mileage counter recording how far you’ve travelled throughout the weeks, months and years. The routes shall also be weather dependent so, for example, on a nice day the point will be somewhere outside.

QR codes will be placed around busy areas of a city. Once scanned they shall give you a route to a peaceful location where you can relax, away from the city. The routes shall change every week but with the option to save your recent location.

Depression and anxiety issues effect 1 in 5 people every year. Exercise and relaxation are two of the best ways to prevent these mental health issues. This App combines exercise with relaxation whilst being adventurous but accessible to all.

1st Idea // Design

Main Body of text (Lobster 2.0) was just a quick idea for the look of my app.

QR codes are not used as much as I initially thought.

Feedback

Needs some sort of ‘reward’ once you reach the finish. Needs to motivate people to actually use it.

Happy with the design and colours of the map. May add street names & park locations.

The logo and type still need to be changed as this was another quick development from the same file as my first design. I also need to sketch out some layout ideas to help the application be easy to use whilst still looking good.

I am currently unsure on which type of locations to include as I want the application to include everyones opinions and suggestions.

Apptive now gives the audience the option to pick the type of location they wish to visit.

Again, I need to change the type but I do like this colour theme and also the scrolling layout. I think there also needs to be more options on how they want the locations to be ordered. For example; having the biggest parks or the closest ones first.

Apptive includes a list of locations once the user has selected what type of place they wish to go. There shall be a scrolling list of locations with the distance, in miles, and also how long it would take to walk. I also want to add a star rating system where the audience can rate the location they have chosen.

2nd Idea // Design

I have kept the same idea from my first design using a my own map and route to the locations. As before I still need to adjust the type but I am happy with the reoccurring colours throughout the application,

There shall also be a ‘rate’ option where you can rate the location out of 5. Apptive shall also use your GPS to find out how far away you are from the location you wish to go to. It shall display the miles and time by car or walking. I would like to add a cycling option but do not want to over complicate the clean and simple layout.

Apptive allows the audience to preview the location before they decide to go there. There shall be multiple photographs of the locations so they shall feel in a familiar setting once they arrive.

I would like to create an animation to show a live view of the application as it is quite hard to judge it with just stills.

Apptive uses the your GPS to give you a route to the location. I am thinking about adding a weather widget showing the forecast over the next hour. I would also like the app to track progress of how far they have travelled throughout the days, weeks and months.

2nd Idea // Design

will you motivate people to use it?

This is a short 50 second animation showing you a basic view of Apptive in motion. I would like to spend a lot more time on this to improve and take it further. My idea of creating a advertisement without showing the product was very difficult as I did not allocate enough time to produce something. This piece is to accompany the poster and give a short introduction about how Apptive operates.
