Fins ara he presentat actituds de signe molt marcat o radical davant de realitats imposants a les quals cal respondre d’urgència. Les coses, però, no són sempre tan clares. Hi ha matisos que cal desvelar, facetes per descobrir. Molt de treball que s’enfronta als espais oberts entre els extrems que hem tractat, que busca el seu camí sense que l’aposta tingui l’obligació d’ésser de màxims, i que no es deixa aclaparar per la transcendència de la seva responsabilitat.

La primera d’aquestes actituds també la trobem a la Garrotxa, amb l’ajuda de Jordi Hidalgo i Daniela Hartmann, seleccionats als premis per dues obres construïdes el 1998 i el 2003. Són dos treballs respectius de petites dimensions, la reforma d’una cabanya del Mas Masnou la construcció d’una nova cabanya i accessos de casa de pagès. «La cabaña es un edificio exento que forma parte del conjunto de una masía [...] en medio de la Fageda d’en Jordà.» Una bona manera de començar. En un lloc sagrat, els arquitectes inicien la memòria del projecte d’una manera absolutament normal: es consideren davant d’un edifici aïllat. La condició d’aïllament és una manera d’allunyar-se de consideracions sentimentals.

L’edifici és aïllat i prou. Podria ser a qualsevol lloc. La situació des d’on el veuen els arquitectes es des de la seva soledat, encara que no s’obliden del lloc al qual pertany. Un lloc que no li confereix atributs. Aïllat. Ulisses no volia renunciar al cant de les sirenes, però es va fer lligar a l’embarcació per evitar donar ordres equivocades. Abans va tapar amb cera les orelles dels seus mariners.

Continuem. «Los tres edificios que constituyen el conjunto de la masía, la casa y las dos cabañas están perfectamente emplazados en un montículo de poca altitud, ordenados alrededor de la era, en la orientación norte-sur de la casa.»

Seguim sense res que vagi més enllà d’una descripció freda i distant. Sembla un informe policíac. O una acta d’un funcionari d’hisenda abans d’expropiar els edificis. I el text acaba d’una manera igualment lacònica i objectiva: «Se ordenaron los espacios exteriores de estancia de manera que no hubieran interferencias de uso entre la casa y los apartamentos, colocando la piscina en un extremo perpendicular a la terraza creada para los apartamentos.» Com les peces d’una màquina, tot encaixa, tot funciona. Massa bé, possiblement, o això és el que els arquitectes desitgen.

I no perden ni un segon per explicar-nos que el projecte probava d’ubicar una casa dintre de quatre parets de pedra rematades amb totxo a les cantonades d’una vella masia, ni tampoc parlen de com fan el projecte, ubicant una casa dintre de l’altra, sense tocar els murs existents, en una secció que és eloqüent, ja que recorda el joc de les nines russes.

Enfonsen l’edifici fins al nivell de l’existent i sobresurten des d’aquesta cota per tenir les primeres vistes, i deixen el garatge a la planta inferior.

El nou treu el nas enretirat del pla del vell. La fusta i el ferro ajuden a la conversa d’iguals. Pedra, vidre. La coberta de teula de dos aiguavessos remata el conjunt i es vol allí des de sempre, introduint una ambigüitat necessària. Vell i nou s’observen. Saben de la dependència de l’un respecte de l’altre, que depenen. Breuer parlava en termes semblants dels seus projectes dels anys trenta. I li agradava mencionar un terme com sun and shadow, propi del món dels toros,

Thus far I have presented attitudes that adopt a very clear, or even radical, position with respect to the dominant realities to which it is necessary to respond with urgency. However, things are not always so cut and dried. There are nuances to be examined, facets to discover. There is a lot of work that situates itself within the open spaces between the extremes we have dealt with, that seeks its way forward without its proposal being obliged to be one of maximums, and that does not let itself be weighed down by the transcendent nature of its responsibilities.

The first of these we also find in La Garrotxa, the work of Jordi Hidalgo and Daniela Hartmann, selected for the Awards twice in 1998 and 2003. The two works selected, both small in scale, were, respectively, the refurbishment of a shed at Mas Masnou and the construction of a new shed and accesses to the farmhouse. “The shed is a free-standing building that forms part of a farmhouse complex […] in the middle of the Fageda d’en Jordà.” A good way to begin. In a sacred spot, the architects begin their description of the project in a way that is absolutely normal: they consider themselves to be faced with an isolated building. The fact of being isolated is a way of distancing yourself from sentimental considerations.

The building is isolated and that’s that. It could be anywhere.

The condition that determines how the architects see it is its isolation, though they do not forget the place it belongs to. A place that does not confer on it any special attributes.

Isolated. Ulysses did not wish to forego the pleasures oldie listening to the sirens’ song, but he had himself tied to the ship so as to avoid the possibility of him giving any erroneous orders. Earlier he had blocked his sailors’ ears with wax.

Let us go on. “The three buildings that form the farmhouse complex, the house and two outbuildings are perfectly sited on a small low hillock, arranged around the threshing floor, following the north-south orientation of the house”. We continue with nothing more than a cold and distant description.

It’s like a police report. Or the report of an Inland Revenue civil servant prior to the expropriation of some property. And the description finishes in an equally laconic and objective way: “The external spaces were organized in such a way as to avoid any interference in the use of either the house or the apartments, with the swimming pool being sited at one end perpendicular to the terrace created for the apartments”. Like the pieces of a machine, everything fits, everything works.

Too well possibly, or at least that is what the architects hope.

And they waste not even a second telling us that the project involved placing a house within the four stone walls finished off with brick at the corners of an old farmhouse, and neither do they talk of how they undertook this project, placing one house inside the other, without touching the existing walls, in a section that recalls those Russian dolls. They sink their building to match the level of the existing one and then look out from this height to offer the first views, leaving the garage on the lower floor.

The new sticks out shyly from the old. The wood and iron help in this conversation between equals. Stone, glass. The tiled gable roof finishes off the whole and you wish it had always been there, introducing a necessary element of ambiguity. Old and new observe each other. They know about the

Hidalgo i Hartmann tenen una preciosa col·lecció de fotografies que els permet analitzar com creixen les masies de la Garrotxa. Com les fan créixer els pagesos, vull dir. Amb qualsevulla xapa que havia estat pintada de qualsevol color, de vegades no més que un bidó de benzina rectificat que a poc a poc, sense premeditació, es va rovellant amb el temps.

Notari callat. Efímeres i provisionalment eternes, les ampliacions que aixopluguen corrals o coberts per a llenya, no tenen cap respecte per l’existent. Li pertanyen, però. Amb insolència, dos móns componen gairebé el paisatge real d’aquelles masies dels quals hem donat notícia, citant Josep Pla. Dos móns iguals de ple dret.

Dos móns són també els que es despleguen des d’un buit, un abisme separador, que allunya i uneix alhora els dos volums finals del segon projecte d’Hidalgo i Hartmann. I seguim amb una memòria objectiva, marca de la casa: «El conjunt es troba encastat al terreny, de manera que una de les plantes queda soterrada per alguna de les seves façanes.» Tanta sort que aquí alguna cosa canvia i es dignen a donar-ne una pista: «Un tall en el terreny, en forma de suau talús, permetrà l’entrada de llum de matí a tarda i oferirà la possibilitat de travessar-lo com si es tractés d’un camí.» Al final també som davant d’una descripció que només vol parlar de funció d’assolellament i altres coses que se suposa que sempre hi han de ser. Condicions necessàries però no suficients, diria un matemàtic.

En realitat som davant de la mateixa solució que abans. La nina russa ha sortit a fer un tomb i s’ha col·locat davant el volum de pedra de la vella masia. I ha començat una altra classe de conversa amb els mateixos termes i condicionants.

Disfressada de ferro sense tractar, decidint que la col·locació de les finestres és més una cosa d’atzar que d’un ordre innecessari o compositiu, atès que els dos són igualment un artifici, està en una actitud d’esperar els resultats d’una dialèctica. Per si de cas, ha perdut un pendent de coberta i ha renunciat a la teula. Una bona manera d’esmolar les armes per al combat amable. Amb arguments contundents, separats de l’interlocutor de davant.

Federico da Montefeltro guanyava les seves batalles amb la senzilla solució de presentar-se al camp de batalla amb més soldats que els que tenia l’enemic. Amabilitat del diàleg, font de reflexió. Tranquil·litat sense afectacions ni voluntat d’alliçonar, però sense por ni prepotència, aquest equilibrí tan difícil. El paper de l’arquitecte com a nou demiürg a la Garrotxa s’ha trencat. No som davant dels sacerdots dels quals parlava Selles. Una ruptura eloqüent. Sense sentir cap soroll, assistim a un petit terratrèmol.

La Casa Bianna, presentada als premis del 2006, confirma que el terratrèmol ha pujat un graó a la seva escala.

M’interessa aquesta actitud lliure, en què cada projecte no pressuposa el següent. És el que vindrà allò que mira el seu antecessor amb un aire crític. Sobretot si es materialitza en projectes com el Camí amb piscina del 2006, també presentat als premis. Gens interessats en què se’ls reconegui, a dictaminar una marca de la casa, les propostes d’Hidalgo i Hartmann gaudeixen d’una molt bona salut.

dependence of one on the other, that they depend. Breuer spoke in similar terms of his projects in the 1930s. And he liked to mention terms like Sun and Shadow, terms that properly belong to the world of bullfighting, to explain how buildings sometimes present two inseparable faces. In Olot there is a bullring. In silence, the two worlds of the building are not unaware that they will have to coexist for ever more, or at least until a volcano comes to life again and interrupts their dialogue. They will never importune each other, despite the fact that a railing without complexes will always mark their limits.

Hidalgo and Hartmann have a beautiful collection of photographs that allow them to analyze how the farmhouses of La Garrotxa grow. How the farmers make them grow, I mean.

With a piece of metal sheet of whatever kind painted whatever color, sometimes nothing more than an oil drum that slowly, and with no premeditation rusts overtime. A silent notary.

Eternally ephemeral and provisional, these extensions that shelter pens and sties or woodsheds have no respect for the pre-existing. They belong there, though. With insolence, two worlds compose almost all the real landscape of these farmhouses mentioned in the quote from Josep Pla. Two worlds that are equally valid.

Two worlds are also what stretch out either side of the chasm a separating abyss, which both distances and unites the two final volumes of the second project by Hidalgo and Hartmann.

Once again we find one of their objective descriptions, so much a trademark of this pair: “The whole is set into the terrain in such a way that one of the floors is left completely underground by one of the façades”. Thank goodness that something here is changed and they deign to give us a clue: “By cutting the ground, producing a gentle talus, it will be possible for light to enter from morning until afternoon and will also offer the possibility of crossing it as if it were a path”. In the end we find ourselves faced with a description that is only interested in talking about the function of direct sunlight and other things one might suppose always have to be there. Necessary preconditions but in and of themselves, insufficient, as a mathematician might say.

In reality we are faced with the same solution as before The Russian doll has gone out for a stroll and placed herself in front of the stone volume of the old farmhouse. And another kind of conversation has been struck up using the same terms and conditioning factors. Disguised in untreated iron, deciding that the placing of the windows is more a random affair than unnecessary or compositional order, given that both are equally artificial, it adopts an expectant attitude awaiting the results of the dialectic. Just in case, it has lost a sloping roof and renounced the use of tiles. A good way to sharpen the weapons for a friendly combat. With forceful arguments, standing back from the interlocutor.

Federico de Montefeltro won his battles with the simple solution of taking the field of battle with more troops than his enemy had. Niceness of dialogue, the fount of reflection, Unaffected tranquility with no wish to give lessons to anyone, but fearless and free of arrogance, such a difficult balance this. The role of the architect as a new demiurge in La Garrotxa has been broken. We are not standing before the priests that Selles spoke of. An eloquent rupture. Though no sound is heard, we are witnesses to a small earthquake.

The Casa Bianna, presented for the 2006 Awards, confirms that the intensity of the earthquake has grown stronger. I am interested by this free-thinking attitude, in which each project does not presuppose its successor. Rather it is that each new project gazes critically at its predecessor. Especially if this takes the form of projects like ‘Path with Pool’, 2006, also presented for the Awards. Completely uninterested in whether recognition is forthcoming or not, in determining a trademark style, the proposals by Hidalgo and Hartmann are enjoying splendid health.

La casa Bianna, una màquina capaç fer possible la convivència de dos actes contraposats: d’una banda, s’enterra, se situa sota la cota d’accés, es mimetitza amb un mur de contenció que s’entén habitat per la presència d’un buit trencat que actua com una radiografia del programa interior. El mur dissol amb l’aparició del gran buit de l’estar que se situa al costat d’una plataforma de formigó, que actua com a contrafinestra abatuda; d’una altra banda, un volum prismàtic de perfil triangular treu el cap en la direcció oposada i ofereix des de l’interior una imatge enfocada del paisatge que deriva en un acte de selecció. El formigó vist opera com a element unificador d’aquesta complexa balança óptica.

A la piscina, el jurat va valorar positivament la intervenció dels autors en proposar un espai únic per la seva actitud davant del paisatge. El paisatge, que no és merament la representació pictòrica o fotogràfica d’un entorn de caràcter natural, La posició de l’home que mira, modifica el paisatge, superposa capes de significat que en fan més complexa la lectura, però la pròpia mirada modifica el paisatge, fins i tot sense contacte físic. La proposició d’una mirada és sempre una redescripció que en darrera instància substitueix la realitat.

En aquests termes és on entenem que opera la gran balconada sobre el paisatge que construeix aquesta intervenció.

Des d’una geometria plegada molt més invisible en el lloc d’allò que la documentació gràfica i les imatges fan suposar, la peça es doblega en un constant acte d’esquivada, per destacar una talaia, una acció colonitzadora des d’on poder mirar.

Arrencant en un mur, el discurs espacial esdevé complex i acaba en una piscina volada, l’aigua de la qual és engolida en cascada pel terreny; un arc trencat que redibuixa l’horitzó, una operació des de l’ús intens de la geometria, que, partint d’una artificialitat sense complexos, redescriu un espectacular fons d’escenari on allò natural passa a ser ficció pictòrica.

Bianna house is a machine capable to make possible the coexistence of two contrasting acts. On one hand it is buried and placed below the level of access, it blends in with a containment wall, which is understood as inhabited one because of the presence of a cut out opening that acts as a snapshot of an interior program. The wall dissolves with an emergence of a big space of a living room, which is placed next to a concrete platform that acts as a lowered shutter. On the other hand, a prismatic volume of triangle silhouette rises up towards the opposite direction and from inside offers a focused image of the landscape. The concrete acts as a unifying element of this complicated optical balance.

In the pool, the jury appreciated authors’ attitude about landscape in the intervention offering a unique space. The landscape, which is not merely a photographic or pictorial representation of a natural environment.

The position of a man who looks modifies a landscape, superimposing layers of meanings, which makes the interpretation more complex, but the eye itself modifies the landscape, even without a physical contact. The proposal of a look is always a description that ultimately replaces a reality.

In these terms it’s where we believe the bay window operates the landscape that built this intervention. From a folded geometry, which is much less visible on the site than documents and graphic images are assuming, the piece bends in a constant act of dodging transforming into a vantage point.

Starting with a wall, a passage becomes more complex and finishes with an overhanging swimming pool, the water of which is swallowed in a cascade by the ground. A broken arch that changes outline of a horizon, a project that intensely uses geometry and shameless artificiality to create a setting where nature transforms into a pictorial fiction.

En sus manos, el hormigón deja de asociarse con el búnquer y se integra pacíficamente en el paisaje rural. Sus construcciones no pertenecen a la arquitectura chocante y aparente que hoy triunfa. «Trabajamos con clientes que quieren vivir y no venderse a través de la arquitectura», confirma Hidalgo. El jurado internacional del Premi AJAC quedó prendado de la suavidad con la que manejan el hormigón y les dio la máxima puntuación por dos obras, Path (un camino que acaba en piscina en el Empordá) y Roc (una casa en la Garrotxa).

La propietaria de la casa del Empordà vio la piscina municipal de Olot firmada por el tándem Hidalgo-Hartmann e inmediatamente les contrató. Solo les dio una indicación: le gustaría disfrutar de las vistas del Montgrí mientras nadaba.

Ellos le dieron vueltas y terminaron creando una pasarela de hormigón que unifica la entrada al terreno con un mirador que ya existía, con una sala-almacén construida aprovechando la pendiente de la parcela y finalmente la piscina, que termina en una suave cascada. Todo en uno.

«El hormigón aguanta y envejece muy bien - explica Hartmann-. Es como la piedra de antes. El propio material ya tiene una expresión muy característica. Tiene mala reputación, pero es un material noble».

Su otra obra premiada, Roc, está semienterrada y sobresale del paisaje de la Garrotxa sin aspavientos. Es una casa de 180 metros cuadrados, con grandes y originales aperturas que ofrecen vistas múltiples y sin espacios clásicos como el recibidor. Fotografiada en una revista de interiorismo, la casa parece un sueño solo al alcance de millonarios. En realidad, cuesta 240.000 euros y sus autores aseguran que trabajan «para la clase media».

«Se está tratando la arquitectura como una cosa ligera y no lo es -reflexionan-. Hay demasiada prisa, cuando la arquitectura es un arte lento, que queda para siempre. Por eso, un error es gravísimo. El efecto Guggenheim (el museo de Bilbao diseñado por Frank Gehry) ha hecho que los políticos utilicen la arquitectura para presentar sus ciudades y aumentar su prestigio y, aunque este no es un camino incorrecto, no se puede abusar».

Para ellos, las obras premiadas por la AJAC significan un antes y un después en su carrera. Han definido sus señas de identidad y son conscientes de que se les pueden abrir puertas más grandes. Quizá entonces cambien el viejo papel pintado que todavía decora las salas de su oficina del Eixample por paredes totalmente blancas. «Eso se correspondería más a un estudio de arquitectos, ¿no?», bromean.

In their hands concrete stops being associated with a bunker and is peacefully integrated in a rural landscape. Their constructions don’t belong to shocking and show-off architecture, which triumphs these days. «We work for clients who want architecture for living and not for selling themselves», confirms Hidalgo. The international jury of AJAC award was captivated by the gentleness they use manipulating concrete and gave them highest scoring for two works. Path (a path which ends with a pool in Empordá) and Roc (a house in Garrotxa).

The owner of a property in Empordà saw a municipal swimming pool of Olot, signed by duo Hidalgo-Hartmann and immediately contracted them. She indicated only one condition: she wished to enjoy the views of Montgrí massif while swimming. Architects danced around the task for a while and came with an idea of creating a concrete walkway which unites the entrance to the site with the preexisting viewpoint, with a hallstoreroom constructed by taking advantage of a slope in the plot and finally with the swimming pool, which ends with a light cascade. All in one.

«Concrete endures and ages very well – explains Hartmann-.

It is equivalent to a stone. The material on its own already has very characteristic expression. It has a bad reputation, but is a very noble material».

Another awarded project Roc is half-buried and stands above the ground without wild-gesticulation in a landscape of Garrotxa. It is a 180 square meter house with large and original openings that offer multiple views and without some traditional areas, such as an entrance hall. «it is normal to perceive an architecture as an easy thing and it is not -contemplate architects-. There is too much haste; meanwhile architecture is a “slow art” that remains forever.

That is a great mistake. The Guggenheim effect (the museum in Bilbao designed by Frank Ghery) made that politicians started to use architecture in representing cities and raise their prestige meanwhile that is not a wrong way to do – it shouldn’t be abused».

Works awarded by AJAC means before and after in career of the duo. They have defined their marks of identity and are aware that from now on larger doors could be opened for them. Maybe then they would change walls of their studio in Eixample still covered with old painted wallpaper to completely white ones. «This would be more suitable for an architect’s office, right? » –they joke.

Otras veces, la delicada disposición de un objeto en el paisaje implica una importante modificación del lugar. Es el caso de la nueva Cabaña, donde el programa de ampliación de una masía que incluye este proyecto en la sección de Continuidades, lleva a conectar ambas piezas a través del suelo. El trazado de una rampa surca el terreno, tendiendo un vacío entre ambas piezas.

La nueva intervención se integra por contraste en un diálogo de contrarios. Frente a la construcción de muros autoportantes de piedra y cubierta a dos aguas, se presenta la nueva cabaña como volumen arquetípico de chapa de hierro.

Frente al pautado de pequeñas y desiguales ventanas donde la sombra esconde los cerramientos, las grandes superficies acristaladas y enrasadas con la chapa de acero corten.

Frente a la levedad de la pieza despegada del suelo por una línea de sombra, la pesantez de los muros de piedra anclados al terreno. Frente al alero de la cubierta de teja que se desliga del muro de piedra, el nuevo tejado como pliegue de la piel metálica de fachada ( … ).

El uso del corten, también como revestimiento de la excavación, da unidad a la intervención reduciendo al máximo el número de materiales. El vacío de la rampa se suma al nuevo volumen, equilibrando la relación con las piezas preexistentes.

El vacío actúa como conglomerante que garantiza la unidad del conjunto, donde entre lo nuevo y lo viejo aparece una dis-continuidad.

Sometimes, a delicate arrangement of an object in a landscape involves a significant alteration of the place. This is the case of the new “Cabaña” (eng. cabin), where the program of an extension of a farmhouse, which includes this project to the section of Continuities, leads to connect two pieces via the floor. The outline of a ramp crosses the field, bridging the gap between both parts.

The new intervention settles in by the contrast in a dialogue of opposites. Facing the construction of freestanding stone walls and gable roof, new cottage is presented as an archetypal volume of iron sheet. Opposing the small and unequally scheduled windows where shade hides enclosures - large glass surfaces aligned with sheets of corten steel appears.

The lightness of a piece detached from the ground by the line of a shadow contrasts with the heaviness of stone walls anchored to the floor. Tiled eave of the roof that is detached from the stone wall faces a new roof which is like a fold of a metal skin of the façade ( … ).

Corten steel, used as well for a coating of an excavation, unifies the intervention, minimizing the quantity of the materials.

The emptiness of the ramp joins the new volume, creating a balance between new and preexisting elements.

The void acts as a binder guaranteeing the unity of a whole, where the discontinuity between an old and a new appears.

“La implantación de un edificio en el paisaje, en lugares de configuración compleja, es algo en lo que quiero hacer hincapié acerca de la increíble sensibilidad de los arquitectos españoles hacia el paisaje. La razón por la cual los arquitectos españoles, y en particular los catalanes son sensibles al paisaje es que no existe una profesión de arquitectura del paisaje en España. Los arquitectos siempre han diseñado el paisaje. Hay jardineros por supuesto, los expertos en material vegetal, pero no hay arquitectos paisajistas. Recuerdo que hace muchos años, cuando existía la moda entre los arquitectos catalanes de hacer un posgrado en la universidad de Columbia que sus carpetas en la mayoría de los casos mostraban proyectos de paisaje, no edificios, o lo que normalmente entendemos como edificios.

En este sentido es también notable (…) el Camino con Piscina en Girona, de Hidalgo.Hartmann, un camino hacia la casa existente con una adición en una especie de paseo, como un acantilado artificial que conduce a la piscina también diseñada por los arquitectos.

Una vez más, se trata en gran medida una operación de paisaje pero también la obra se encuentra entre la escultura, la arquitectura y el paisaje. Un plano que se retuerce y finalmente abraza la piscina. Y la piscina como una especie de fuente. Un constante movimiento en el borde. El hecho de que la piscina no solo esté hundida en el suelo sino que esté parcialmente suspendida por encima de él la convierte en una especie de objeto en sí mismo que se descubre en su aproximación. Una aproximación que desde la hierba o desde esta especie de plano plegado que te acompaña hacia el jardín.”

“The placement of the building in the landscape, in a rather complex configured site, it’s something I want to stress much more: the incredible sensitivity of Spanish architects towards the landscape. The reason why Spanish, and particularly Catalan architects are sensitive to the landscape is that there is no profession of landscape architecture in Spain. Architects have always designed the landscape. There are gardeners of course, experts in plant material, but there are no landscape architects. I remember years and years ago, when there was a fashion for Catalan architects coming to Columbia to do a one year post graduate degree, that the portfolios were in many cases filled with projects which were landscapes, not buildings as we normally understand buildings.

In this sense it is also remarkable (…) the Pathway with swimming pool in Girona, by Hidalgo-Hartmann architects, a drive to the existing house with an added kind of promenade, like a sort of artificial escarpment that leads to the swimming pool, also designed by the architects. Again, it is very much a landscape operation but also the actual work itself is somewhere partly between sculpture, architecture and landscape. A plane, a twisted form, eventually embraces the swimming pool. And the swimming pool is like a sort of fountain.

It constantly moves over the edge. The pool is not just sunk in the ground, it is suspended partly above the ground, and it becomes a sort of object in itself, related to the approach.

You can either approach it over the grass, or from this sort of counter fold that leads you down to the garden.”

Intersección doméstica / Domestic Crossroads Being glocal / Being glocal Laura Bossi

Hidalgo y Hartmann se encontraron en Barcelona en los principios de los años Noventa y son herederos directos del clima positivo que llevó a la realización de la Vila Olímpica. Son una pareja profesional global: Hartmann nació en el 1964 en Munster, en Alemania, mientras que Hidalgo , nació en el 1967 en Olot, un pueblo rural de 33.000 habitantes, a 2 horas desde Barcelona. Es la capital de la Garrotxa: un área incontaminada, donde prevalece la agricultura y donde todos están profundamente conectados a la propia tierra. Si en las ciudades mayores de Catalunya, el castellano y el catalán son equivalentes, aquí se habla mayoritariamente el catalán ( … ). …Hidalgo y Hartmann pusieron a prueba a sus clientes mediante la propuesta de utilizar el hormigón armado, un material que debe que ser planeado hasta en el más pequeño de los detalles. Por otra parte, el sitio era todo un reto al tratarse de una parcela muy pequeña en pendiente y circundada de edificaciones. Los arquitectos se enfrentaron inicialmente a la necesidad de superar la presencia de estas condiciones existentes: o más precisamente desde la necesidad de esquivar la presencia de estas mismas. Como un acto fundacional, dibujaron una cruz, que se extiende desde el centro de la parcela hacia cuatro puntos que fueron cuidadosamente seleccionados para esquivar cualquier vista de los edificios de los alrededores.

Los arquitectos han utilizado la transparencia en contraste con la compacidad del material típico de los gruesos muros de piedra de esta zona rural. El patio interior, en el centro de la cruz, es una gran caja en cristal que crea juegos de reflejos en las amplias aberturas perimetrales. Los cuatro brazos que se extienden hacia el paisaje parecen más bien telescopios.

Esta metáfora queda patente también en la sección de la casa: la estructura se origina en un plano construido en el terreno, elevándose desde la tierra y extendiéndose en un ligero voladizo.

A pesar del uso del hormigón como material masivo, la casa parece literalmente levitar sobre la tierra gracias a su sección. Al mismo tiempo, muestra la conexión entre los cuatro elementos en voladizo y el sistema de elementos en ménsula que la soporta desde abajo. Jordi Hidalgo Tané y Daniela Hartmann demuestran que, cuando está bien interpretado, el material no sólo desafía lugares comunes y opiniones no profesionales, sino también a la fragilidad de las tendencias. Así que volveremos a visitar esta casa dentro de muchos años, momento en el cual las arquitecturas abigarradas de 22 @ Barcelona, tal vez nos podrán parecer anticuadas.

Hidalgo and Hartmann met in the early 1990s in Barcelona and are direct heirs to the favourable climate that led to the realisation of Vila Olímpica. They are a “glocal” couple. Hartmann was born in 1964 in Munster, Germany, while Hidalgo (1967) comes from Olot, a country town with around 33,000 inhabitants located two hours from Barcelona. The capital of Garrotxa, Olot is surrounded by uncontaminated countryside where agriculture prevails and everyone feels deeply attached to their land. While Spanish and Catalan are corresponding languages in Catalonia’s larger cities, around these parts one only hears Catalan spoken ( … ). …Hidalgo and Hartmann could test their clients by proposing to use reinforced concrete, a material that has to be planned down to the most trivial of details. Moreover, the challenging site not only had little land available, but was also sloping and surrounded by less than beautiful buildings. The architects were initially faced with the necessity to overcome the presence of these existing conditions. As an act of foundation, they marked out a cross, stretching from the centre of the site to four points that were carefully selected to block out any view of the surrounding buildings. The architects have used transparency to introduce a contrast with the material compactness typical of the thick rural stone walls in this part of Spain. The inner patio, at the centre of the cross, is a large glass box. This creates a play of reflections with the broad windows along the sides, making the four arms extending onto the landscape seem rather like telescopes. The metaphor is also suggested in the building’s section. Originating from a plan completely built into the hillside, the structure rises from the ground and is extended in a slight cantilever.

The concrete is certainly massive, but the design of its section gives the house the impression of being literally lifted off the ground. At the same time, it wholly conceals the connection between the four cantilevered elements and the bearing system that supports them from below. Jordi Hidalgo Tame and Daniela Hartmann demonstrate that, when well interpreted, material not only defies commonplaces and nonprofessional opinions, but also the succession of trends. So we’ll be back to visit this house many years from now, by which time the variegated architectures of 22@ Barcelona may perhaps seem dated.

Cabaña Del Mas Masnou / Mas Masnou Cabin Les Preses. Girona 1997-1999

La cabaña es una sencilla construcción de planta rectangular de 10x8m. de cubierta a dos aguas, que forma parte del conjunto de la masía del Mas Masnou, reformada como residencia de turismo rural, situada en el corazón del Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa en un magnifico paraje en medio de la Fageda d´en Jordà.

La claridad formal de la construcción original, con una planta baja de paredes de piedra volcánica y mortero de cal utilizada para el almacenaje, y una planta superior abierta y ventilada bajo la cubierta, utilizada como secadero nos sugirió la posibilidad de proponer una intervención que permitiera una lectura clara de la tipología original. Situamos un volumen de acero perforado que flota en el interior del volumen existente, sin tocarlo, dialogando con él en un ejercicio de fusión entre el vocabulario contemporáneo y las formas y métodos constructivos tradicionales.

The cabin is a simple rectangular building of 10x8mm. The gable roof, part of the whole Mas Masnou farmhouse, renovated as a residence accommodations, located in the heart of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Area of the Garrotxa in a beautiful area surrounded by the Fageda d‘en Jorda. The formal clarity of the original building with a ground floor walls of volcanic stone and lime mortar used for storage, and an open and airy below decks, used as dryer upstairs suggested the possibility of proposing an intervention that would allow a clear reading of the original typology. We place a volume of perforated steel that floats within the existing volume without touching it, talking with him in an exercise in vocabulary fusion between contemporary and traditional forms and construction methods.

Cabaña y accesos de masía / Hut and Accesses to a Country House La Garrotxa. Girona 2000-2004

La intervención tiene como punto de partida el análisis de los diferentes elementos a conservar, sus conexiones y la reordenación de los accesos para adecuarlo a un uso residencial.

La intervención consiste en la creación de un vacío en planta semisótano, abierto a ambos lados que actúa como acceso y distribuidor entre las partes que conforman el conjunto de la masía, como si de un camino se tratara. La nueva cabaña se concibe como un volumen arquetípico de chapa de hierro, como los cobertizos o cabañas que los payeses construyen para almacenar leña o utensilios del campo, que revisten con las chapas de los bidones de gasóleo previamente rectificadas para convertirse en una plancha lisa.

The intervention as starting point has the analysis of different preserve elements, connections and reordering of hits to adapt it to a residential use. The operation consists in creating of an empty basement floor, open on both sides acting as access and distributor between the parties that make up the whole of the farmhouse, as if it were a road. The new cabin is conceived as an archetypal volume of sheet iron, as sheds or huts built for the farmers store firewood or utensils of the field, plates coated with drums of diesel rectified prior to becoming a smooth plate.

Casa Bianna / Bianna House La Garrotxa. Girona 2002-2006

Situada en un valle de carácter agrícola rodeado de montañas, la casa se somete al protagonismo de su entorno natural con respeto, integrándose en sus tierras y abriéndose a las vistas con aperturas precisas que enmarcan el paisaje.

Con sus perfiles alargados, y de poca altura, esta vivienda funciona como nexo de unión entre los diferentes rasgos de su entorno que quedan atrapados en su interior mediante los porches y patios bajo la cubierta continua que los engloba.

La casa se compone de dos volúmenes de hormigón que se insertan en el territorio fundiéndose en él. Ambos volúmenes de diferente tamaño se traban al terreno mediante la prolongación de los muros de contención que los definen, modificando la topografía del terreno para quedar integrada en ella.

Los dos volúmenes se unen entre sí, mediante la rampa de acceso que se convierte en un espacio exterior autónomo, una parte de la naturaleza que ha sido aislada y apropiada por el hombre.

Located in an agricultural valley surrounded by mountains, the house submits to the protagonism of the landscape with respect. It is perfectly integrated in the ground and views are oriented through precise openings that frame the nature. The house is composed by two concrete volumes that are inserted in the territory getting fused to it. Both volumes of different sizes are set firmly to the ground by the enlargement of the containing walls that define them. These walls modify the topography of the territory to get the volumes more integrated in it. By connecting the two volumes, a ramp that leads to the entrance of the house creates an independent outside space, a space separated from nature and appropriated by man.

Reordenacion de patio / Refurbishment of Courtyard Olot. Girona 2001

Reordenación de un patio interior de vivienda de 6x5m en el casco antiguo de Olot, en un complejo programa de recuperación del espacio del patio, claraboya de iluminación de la planta baja, sauna, lavadero y estudio. La actuación en el patio se basa en la premisa de liberar la fachada de los volúmenes actuales y reubicar la nueva intervención en el fondo de la parcela, de forma a producir un vacío entra la vieja y la nueva edificación, como un espacio interior sin techo. El estudio se trata como una ‘eixida’, un porche abierto habitual en las azoteas del casco antiguo de Olot, con una cubierta inclinada de estructura de hierro vista y un cerramiento de vidrio. Este cerramiento de vidrio se trata como un plano abstracto, exento de edificación, un plano que refleja el entorno y lo ordena. La textura rugosa de la fachada existente de piedra volcánica, el entorno caótico de volúmenes, chimeneas, depósitos y cubiertas contrapuestos a la extrema pureza del plano de vidrio crea un diálogo entre arquitecturas de diferentes épocas, un diálogo recíproco que las enriquece.

This complex programme involved reorganising a 6 x 5 metre courtyard in a house in the old town centre of Olot, thereby recovering the courtyard and inserting a skylight in the ceiling of the ground floor, along with a sauna, utility room and studio. The intervention is based on the premise of freeing the facade of existing volumes and relocating the new construction at the rear of the plot in order to produce an empty space between the old and the new buildings, like an indoor space without a roof. The studio is raised so as not to occupy the courtyard, and the sauna is situated beneath the porch. The studio is treated like a typical porch on the rooftops of Olot, with a sloping iron roof and an abstract plane of glass that reflects and organises its surroundings. The work took shape slowly, exposing to view the rough texture of the volcanic rock in the existing facade, the chaotic context of volumes, chimneys, tanks and roofs that, in contrast with the extreme purity and flatness of the glass, created a dialogue between the architectures of different periods, a reciprocal and mutually enriching dialogue.

Camino con piscina / Path with Swimming Pool Jafre. Alt Empordà 2004-2005

La intervención se sitúa en la plana de l´Empordà, con su vasta extensión de campos agrícolas salpicados por agrupaciones de vegetación que definen el territorio. Un plano horizontal de agua se sitúa en el paisaje. Este plano se traba al terreno mediante un camino que conecta diferentes cotas del solar. Su trazado evoca la imagen de los caminos de tierra, los meandros de los ríos de formas libres que se contraponen a la rigidez geométrica de los campos. Convertir este camino en volumen para crear un objeto arquitectónico autónomo insertado en el paisaje construido de hormigón como único material posible por su abstracción.

The intervention is in the Empordà plain, with its vast agricultural fields punctuated by clusters of vegetation that define the territory. A swimming pool, a warehouse for storing garden tools and the creation of an access to both the needs of the project were to develop. The solution of these three elements are integrated into a space designed with a single piece that is inserted into the landscape, and amended it redefines it. Its layout evokes the image of dirt roads, river meanders to its free form contrasts of rigid geometric fields.

From a folded geometry hardly visible at the place the piece is folded in a constant act of flight, to highlight a vantage point from which to watch. Starting at one wall, space travel presents a complex assemblage of planes due to the intense use of geometry that has just blown up in the pool with cascading water is engulfed by the field.

Casa Saus / Saus House Saus. Alt Empordà 2004-2007

La casa se encuentra situada en una urbanización residencial en Saus, en el corazón de l´alt Empordà a pocos quilómeros de la costa. El proyecto opta por una ordenación de volúmenes que recuerden los conjuntos armónicos de las masias en el territorio con unas formas complejas fruto de la adición de diferentes volúmenes a lo largo del tiempo según las necesidades de cada momento. La casa surge del gesto natural de de girarse hacia el sol dando la espalda a la Tramuntana, en una forma de U creando un patio de estar exterior resguardado del viento, como el corazón de la casa en el exterior. Los materiales utilizados serán la piedra natural para las fachadas y la teja árabe para la cubierta en contraste con el acero corten en las aberturas.

The house is located in a residential area in Saus, in the heart of l’alt Empordà, a few kilometers from the coast. The project opts for an arrangement of volumes that recall the harmonic sets of farmhouses in the territory with a complex shape which results from the sum of different volumes over time, according to the needs of the moment. The house is consequence of the natural gesture of turning to the sun and gives his back to the North Wind, in a U-shaped courtyard creating an outdoor living sheltered from the wind, as the outside heart of the house. The materials used are natural stone for facades and Moorish tiles for the roof contrast with the steel corten in the openings.

Casa Vallvidrera / Vallvidrera House Vallvidrera. Barcelona 2004-2006

Situada en la ladera de la montaña de Vallvidrera con unas magníficas vistas sobre la ciudad de Barcelona nos encontramos una casa con una serie de anexos edificados a lo largo del tiempo que configuran un patio a diferentes niveles en un único conjunto volumétrico. Todo este vacío contenido entre las paredes gravita alrededor de una palmera. Con estas premisas el proyecto se centra en la modificación de las fachadas interviniendo en las aberturas sin cambiar las dimensiones de los huecos pero ampliando la superficie de vidrio a modo de plafón superpuesto. Su calidad de espejo permite “insertar” el paisaje y el cielo en el patio lo que enfatiza las cualidades espaciales de la ordenación original del conjunto. Más que de una reforma se trata de una transformación de la edificación que se convierte en una “galería de imágenes” del paisaje proyectadas sobre las fachadas que rodean el patio.

Located on the mountainside of Vallvidrera with magnificent views of the city of Barcelona we run un against a house with a series of annexes built along time to form a courtyard at different levels in a single volume set. All this empty content between walls gravitates around a palm tree. With these premises, the project focuses on changing facades intervening in the openings without changing the dimensions of the voids but increasing the area of glass, ceiling overlay mode. As the mirror allows “insert” the landscape and sky in the courtyard which emphasizes the spatial qualities of the original set organization. Rather than reform is a transformation of the building that becomes a projected “gallery” of the landscape on facades surrounding the patio.

Can Passoles / House of Passoles Sales de Llierca, Girona 2006

La masía de Can Passoles, o lo que queda de ella, se encuentra situada en medio del campo en un entorno agrícola a pocos quilómetros del pequeño pueblo de Tortellá. Se trata de una construcción catalogada de la cual solo se conservan parte de los gruesos muros de fachada y de los que definen sus crujías. Una ruina de una gran belleza depositaria de la verdad de la obra que nos llevará a anhelar lo que pudo ser el edificio en su plenitud.

El proyecto construye el volumen de aire cautivo entre los muros y la cubierta como única certeza de la construcción original. Unos cuerpos abstractos de hormigón que levitan entre los muros completan la volumetría original mostrando de forma inequívoca las huellas del tiempo en la edificación.

The country house Can Passoles, or what remains of it, is situated in the countryside, in an agricultural setting few kilometers away from small town of Tortellá. The building is listed as patrimonial, although only part of thick walls of the facade and the ones defining the bays are preserved. The ruin, far from being the repository of the truth of a work, will lead us to yearn for what could have been the building in its completeness.

The project builds volume of captured air between the walls and the roof as the only certainty of the original construction.

Abstract concrete bodies levitating within the walls complete the original volumetry showing unequivocally the traces of time on the building.

Casa Pocafarina / Pocafarina House Led Preses. Girona 2006-2011

La vivienda se sitúa en una parcela en esquina, con buenas vistas sobre el paisaje lejano. Un volumen compacto en forma de cruz se sitúa en el centro de gravedad de la parcela orientándose a las diferentes visuales que ofrece el paisaje evitando las edificaciones vecinas. Este volumen se apoya en cuatro puntos sobre la base de la planta semisótano de 8x8m que contiene acceso a la vivienda, el porche-garaje y el lavadero. En la planta superior, la planta en forma de cruz, permite organizar las cuatro alas alrededor de un espacio central presidido por un patio interior. La sala de estar en una de las alas, la cocina-comedor en otra ala, el dormitorio principal con su baño y aseo de visitas en otra ala y en la última las habitaciones de los niños con su baño. El hormigón gris encofrado con llata madera, la cubierta de zinc y la carpintería de aluminio anodinado negro darán forma, textura y el peso necesario para materializar la idea de manera coherente.

The house is situated on a corner plot with some good views over the distant landscape. In order to enjoy these views and avoid the neighboring buildings, the ideal configuration for the house was to create a compact form of cross which is placed at the center of gravity of the plot.

The four wings are oriented in a way that ensures the selected views from inside the house. On the top floor, the cross-shaped plan organizes the four wings around a central space, an exterior courtyard, that provides sunlight into the heart of the house. The ground floor contains the housing access, the porch, garage and laundry. The four wings contain the different functions of the house with the living room area and the kitchen-dining area connected with each other through the transparency of the courtyard. Distributed on both sides of this main space there is the master bedroom with its own bathroom and the two children’s bedrooms also with a bathroom hidden by a concrete wall.

Casa Entremedianeras / House Betwen Walls Palafrugell, Baix Empordà 2007-2010

La parcela se encuentra en una calle de casas entre medianeras de dos y tres plantas en el casco urbano de Palafrugell en el Baix Empordá La ubicación de la parcela casi en el límite del casco urbano enfrentada a un vacio urbano utilizado como espacio público, nos ofrecía la oportunidad de obtener en la planta superior unas magníficas vistas lejanas hacia la cordillera Litoral, es decir hacia la montaña de Sant Sebastià con su famoso faro.

Esta ubicación nos llevo a plantear una casa que expresara el hecho de mirar a lo lejos desde su emplazamiento en el casco urbano mediante un volumen que emergiendo del suelo con dos plantas ciegas acabara en un gran mirador en la segunda planta.

En consecuencia, invertimos el orden funcional de la casa disponiendo en la planta baja el garaje, en la planta primera las habitaciones iluminadas por un patio y en la planta segunda la sala de estar y cocina estrechamente ligadas a través del patio con a la azotea con su piscina, solárium y barbacoa.

Una casa que configurada básicamente por un muro, una puerta y una ventana nos ofrece una relectura actual de una casa entre medianeras.

The plot is located in a street of houses in a row of two and three floors in the town of Palafrugell in the Baix Empordá.

The location of the plot is almost at the edge of town, facing an urban vacuum, which is used as public space. This offered us the opportunity to get from the top floor some magnificent views of the coastal mountain range, i.e. towards the mountain of Sant Sebastià with its famous lighthouse.

This site led us to design a house that provides an outlook of distant views from its location in the village through the volume, which emerges from the ground with two “blind” floors and ends up in a large viewpoint on the second floor.

Accordingly, we reversed the functional order of the house and in the ground floor put a garage, in the first floor rooms illuminated through the patio and in the second floor - a living room and kitchen closely linked with to the roof pool, sundeck and barbecue through the courtyard.

A house that basically configured by a wall, a door and a window offers a new understanding of an attached house.

Casa Montfullà / Montfullà House Montfullà. Girona 2008-2010

Nos encontramos con una parcela horizontal, testera elevada sobre dos grandes taludes, como una atalaya desde donde disfrutar de unas inmejorables vistas hacia el llano agrícola que se extendía a sus pies hasta llegar a Salt y la ciudad de Girona. Se trataba pues de un emplazamiento excepcional que reclamaba de una intervención que reconociera los atributos del lugar y los pusiera en valor. Situamos un volumen silencioso y hermético que emergiendo del lugar adoptara el perfil original de la colina, como una fortaleza que dominara visualmente el paisaje. Un volumen que se encierra en sí mismo y se protege de las construcciones del entorno sirviéndose para ello de la geometría quebrada de sus gruesos muros. Unos muros que abrazan el espacio interior-exterior continuo, que a modo de patio nos permite crear un mundo propio centrando nuestra mirada hacia lo lejano.

We find ourselves on a horizontal ground, a corner plot raised on two large slopes like a vantage point from which to enjoy superb views towards the agricultural plain that stretches at his feet until reaching Salt and the city of Girona. It is thus an exceptional setting that claims for an intervention that recognizes the attributes of the site and put them in value. We placed a silent, hermetic volume that emerges from the site and adopts the original profile of the hill, like a fortress that visually dominates the landscape. The volume encloses itself from the outside and is protected from the constructions that surround it by using the broken geometry of two thick walls.

These walls comprise a continuous space from the inside out that creates in form of a terrace, a world of its own, which turns our attention to the distance.

Caserío Landaburu / Landaburu Farmhouse Bera. Navarra 2009-

A pocos kilómetros de Bera, el Caserío Landaburu, una pequeña construcción tradicional que responde a la tipología de caserío, observa anclada en la ladera del monte el sobrecogedor paisaje lejano de los montes Navarros. El hecho de intervenir en este excepcional emplazamiento, supone un ejercicio de respeto hacia la frágil edificación existente y sobre todo hacia la fuerza mística del monte Navarro rico en historia y leyendas. Se requiere de un programa de casa rural con unas pocas habitaciones que alojaremos en la edificación existente y de una amplia zona de estar con cocina que enterraremos en la montaña pasando a formar parte de ella, como si ya hubiera estado allí antes de la edificación del caserío. Cobijados en el interior del monte como en una “cueva” observaremos el magnífico paisaje que se nos abre ante nosotros.

A few kilometers from Bera, the Caserío Landaburu, a small traditional building, anchored in the breathtaking mountainside notes distant landscape of the Navarre mountains. To intervene in this exceptional location is supposed an exercise of respect for the fragile building and especially to the mystical power of Mt. Navarro, rich in history and legends. It requires a program of rural house with a few rooms to stay in the existing building and a spacious living area with kitchen interned in the mountain becoming part of it, as if he had been there before the building of the village. Sheltered inside the forest as a “cave”, observes the magnificent landscape that opens in front of us.

Casa T / T House 2012-

El volumen general de la casa responde a la situación comprometida de una parcela en medio de un hermoso campo de golf y una exuberante vegetación de pinos y robles. La arquitectura de la casa puede ser vista como la expresión más sencilla y al mismo tiempo compleja y rica cuando uno descubre su mundo interior. Debe entenderse como un recorrido desde el acceso a la calle hacia un lugar de privacidad e intimidad. La sucesión de puntos de vista inesperados y espacios no se descubre hasta que uno se mueve a través de ellos. El concepto espacial se basa en un programa muy básico de zonificación con una organización que combina los espacios cerrados de la zona de la cocina y el servicio en la planta baja y el área de dormitorios en la planta superior con los espacios abiertos de estar y comedor en la planta baja y estudio en planta primera. Los dos elementos contradictorios y complementarios dan forma a la casa. La casa está diseñada como una gruesa cubierta de hormigón que se mantiene en equilibrio apoyada sobre la barra que contiene la cocina, como un enorme porche situado entre los árboles.

The general volume of the house responds to the compromised situation of a steep plot in the middle of a beautiful golf course and lush vegetation of pine and oak trees. The architecture of the house can be seen as the simplest expression and at the same time complex and rich when one discovers its inner world. It should be understood as a passage that moves the inhabitants from the access on the street to a place of privacy and intimacy. The succession of unexpected views and spaces is not discovered until one moves through them. The spatial concept is based on a very basic zoning program which leeds to an organization that combines enclosed spaces like the kitchen and service area on the ground floor as well as the upper bedroom area with the open spaces of living and dining on the ground floor. The two contradictory elements that both need the other in order to exist, are responsible for the geometrical shape. The house is designed as a thick concrete roof that is balancing in the air with the aid of a rectangular support and functions as a huge porch between the trees.

Casa Roses / Roses House Roses. Alt Empordà 2013-

La parcela se encuentra encaramada en ladera del macizo del Cap de Creus, 80m. por encima del nivel del mar con unas vistas espléndidas sobre la bahía de Roses y los Pirineos a lo lejos que en días de invierno se encuentran nevados.

La parcela, está excavada en la roca, dejando a la vista una pared de granito vertical que enseguida nos dimos cuenta que debía formar parte de la casa como un elemento fundamental.

Una parcela que dada su altura solo requiere de una plataforma horizontal como una plaza desde donde poder observar el mar bajo una cubierta que a modo de árbol nos proteja del sol. Un árbol de hormigón que emerja desde tierra y surque toda la casa hasta abrirse por encima de la plaza como una higuera que nos protege y cobija.

The site is excavated in the rock, exposing the vertical granite wall that we can notice is a part and a key element of the house.

A plot, that with its given height only requires a horizontal platform as an area from which sea can be observed under a cover which as a kind of a tree protects us from the sun . A concrete tree emerges from the ground and ploughs through the whole house until it opens up above the square as a fig tree that protects and shelters.

Casa Vilamacolum / Vilamacolum House Vilamacolum, Alt Empordà 2013-

Vilamacolum es un pueblo agrícola del Alt Empordà que no llega a los 300 habitantes y cuya principal actividad es la agricultura y la ganadería. Un pueblo donde el turismo no ha llegado y en donde los tractores y vehículos agrícolas de todo tipo circulan por sus calles definidas por tapias y cobertizos.

Todo ello en medio de la vasta plana agrícola de l´ Empordà que desemboca en la bahía de Roses con el Montgrí como telón de fondo.

Un lugar en definitiva, con un fuerte carácter que aconseja plantear una arquitectura alejada de la imagen que tenemos de una casa para así poder acercarnos a una tipología más cercana al entorno agrícola que nos rodea, como puede ser la de un cobertizo. Una cubierta soportada por cuatro pilares que almacena bajo ella unos volúmenes configuran la casa, todo ello en hormigón. Una casa que con una arquitectura sin concesiones se funde en el entorno de manera natural.

Vilamacolum is an agricultural town in the Alt Empordà with less than 300 inhabitants, whose main activity is agriculture and animal husbandry A town which tourism has not reached and where agricultural tractors and vehicles of all kinds circulates in the streets defined by walls and sheds.

All this in the midst of the vast agricultural plain of the Empordà which flows into the bay of Roses with Montgrí as a backdrop.

A place that definitely has a strong character which suggests considering an architecture remote to the one we have of an common house in order to approach the typology closer to surrounding environment, such as that of a shed. A roof supported by four pillars that under itself stores volumes, which form a house, all that made of concrete. A house that with uncompromising architecture blends into the environment in a natural manner.
