Thank you for helping our campus shine!

T

his year’s annual campus beautification event, sponsored by the BIG SUNDAY organization, was once again a great success! Thank you to all of the enthusiastic volunteers who showed up to get dirty and support our school. More than 70 student, parent, staff and community volunteers came together to plant 25 new drought tolerant

flowering plants, spread organic compost purchased from Boething Treeland, pull weeds, pick-up trash, sweep, scrub, and paint the copy shed, basketball backboards and one of the handball courts. At the end of the day, we shared a delicious meal together from Poquito Mas. This event is just the latest of example of our ongoing campus beautification program that has, over the years, seen

our amazing Green Team, working together with dedicated student and parent volunteers, add more than 105 new trees and nearly 325 flowering shrubs in and around our campus. A huge thank you to goes out to our Green Team Captain, Jennifer Termini, for organizing this event, as well as to all those who participated. The campus looks amazing thanks to all of your efforts!

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

A Few Words of Gratitude

A

s we quickly approach the end of this amazing year, I want to take advantage of this opportunity to thank you all for welcoming me to Serrania. I must confess that when I first set foot on Serrania, back in October of 2015, I fell in love with our campus and the positive vibe felt all throughout the school, but I also felt extremely intimidated by the immense responsibility placed on my shoulders. Before joining the amazing Serrania Community, I had conducted lots of research, and every search came back with nothing but great results and praises about the high caliber of teaching, student high performance levels, unparalleled level of staff appreciation from parents, incredible family events, and the overall sense of community that makes Serrania a school like no other. Knowing all of this truly raised multiple questions in my head about how could I assist the school with continuing all these wonderful things? How could I ensure the safety of everyone at school? How could I possibly keep track of everything happening on campus? Where would I gather the resources needed to maintain the high level of community engagement that Serrania is used to? Or how could I help our school achieve new goals? To my surprise and unbelievable luck, every single one of you taught me to stop thinking and saying “I” and start thinking and saying “We”. I am truly beyond words of gratitude for everything you all have done. Every staff member, student, parent, and community member at Serrania has truly shown me the real definition of teamwork. Together we have overcome multiple

obstacles and roadblocks that could have kept us from creating the phenomenal learning environment all students at Serrania currently enjoy. Together we have seen our students flourish into exemplary leaders of tomorrow, and together we shared good and bad experiences that could have easily divided us, but we stayed together like champions and came out victorious. In that very sentiment, it is my biggest wish for next year to continue working and achieving together. Parents and staff members working side by side with students as the top priority have proven to be a very efficient formula. We must plan for next year to be even better than this year. I know that the process is not easy, but if we all put our biases, personal views, and past negative experiences aside, we will be unstoppable. We must focus on the great things we can achieve together in order to benefit the most important part of our formula – our students. I am looking forward to the great things we will accomplish together next year, and as we move forward, I am confident I will have your support and participation in ensuring the safety of every student at Serrania. Go Serrania Suns and shine brighter than ever, lighting the way to a very successful 2016-2017 year! Sincerely,

Principal, Serrania Charter for Enriched Studies

Serrania is Now a Gold Ribbon School!

n 2012, Serrania Avenue Elementary School became a California Distinguished School, when the State of California’s Board of Education recognized us as a school that demonstrates that our students shine beyond all expectations. The faculty, staff, and families help make our students go beyond a typical elementary school experience and, instead, allow our children to become respectful, articulate, caring individuals, who are motivated to excel in all areas of life. It’s five years later and the California Board of Education has recognized us once again, bestowing upon Serrania Charter for Enriched Studies the Gold Ribbon Award in the area of Leadership and Excellence! Through our application process, the State of California has acknowledged that we are an innovative and accomplished school. We set our goals high and strive to achieve them for every student at Serrania. Our Model of Leadership helps bring our students into the 21st century with knowledge and skills that will ensure their place in the future. Within our Leadership Model, our students are able to use their critical thinking and problem solving skills to help them overcome any hurdles that come their way. Our students know how to evaluate issues, determine relevance to their needs, establish a plan to meet and exceed their goals, and act upon their personal plan. These personal leadership skills will allow all of our

students to become successful members of our future world.

tremendous things because of their amazing abilities.

The State of California has recognized our school for these things as well by awarding Serrania a Gold Ribbon Award making us a “Gold Ribbon School.”

As the authors of the Gold Ribbon application, we are so proud to be a part of this wonderful school.

They have validated what we already knew, that our students are capable of

n Twitter it’s a heart. On Facebook, it’s a like. On Instagram, it’s a heart. People today are bombarded by outside opinions before developing their own. With very little opportunity for internal validation, “do you like it?” has become the first step after creation. How does it feel when you post to social media and nobody likes it or responds? As an adult, you’ve had years of developing coping skills to manage disappointment, taking responsibility for your mistakes, learning from them, and continuing to grow. The struggle is that young people today haven’t grown up in that world. They haven’t been forced to make their own judgments of their work, to form their own opinions before the outside world shares theirs. SMS So how can you help your child(ren) with this? There is no magic wand, but there are a lot of little intentional things you can do to help your child begin to develop their own self worth:

they just came up with, instead of answering, ask them what they think! Did the painting come out the way they wanted? Were they happy with the outcome? • Focus on the process rather then the outcome. Instead of focusing on the “A” grade on a test, focus on the effort put into studying and preparing for the test which resulted in the “A”. • Hold your children accountable. When they make a mistake, talk them through the mistake to help them understand the different choice they could have made that would have resulted in a different outcome.

While developing selfvalidation in your child will take considerable time and effort on your part, the payoff for your child’s future is SMS huge!

Fun was had by all at this year’s spectacular Fun Fair! As always, this year’s Fun Fair featured fun and exciting games for all. But the true highlight of the day was seeing our Serrania community come together as one. his year we showered our staff with VIP treatment, like the picture perfect “movie” stars we know them all to be. Each was given a VIP pass with their itinerary for the week, and although they never stepped off school grounds, we sure tried to make them feel like they were the next Oscar recipient. On Monday morning, out staff found the school decorated with stars, paparazzi, flowers and more. Each staff member had a star of their own and many of them were found taking pictures to remember them by. The week also started with a beautiful breakfast fit for the hungriest of stars. Pastries, cookies, fresh fruit and fresh hot Starbucks coffee awaited our VIP’s on Monday morning. The rest of the week didn’t disappoint either. On Tuesday, they were given the “going to the movie” treatment... surprised with homemade caramel popcorn and all their favorite childhood (or adulthood) movie treats! Wednesday was for sure a star treatment, as volunteers juiced fresh grapefruit and orange juice for the staff during their recess break. Our staff was able to energize up for the second half of the day with fresh veggies, protein bars, fruit and more. Thursday brought along with it an afternoon pick me up of freshly baked donuts and cookies and afternoon coffee.

Our Staff is Picture Perfect!! talk among each other, participate in a raffle and partake in a delicious dessert bar of candy and cookies galore. The week was a wonderful representation of just how picture perfect our Serrania Staff really is... from the Principal to our wonderful Janitorial staff and everyone in between. Every single staff member helps to make this wonderful school picture perfect for our children–an

experience fit for even the biggest of celebrities. The team of Lacey Donahue, Carine Weingarten and Amy Feder would like to thank each and every volunteer that took part in Staff Appreciation Week. Our Serrania staff truly felt the love and appreciation. Staff appreciation recap (May 6th) –Amy Feder, Carine and Lacey

And Friday, well we’ll get to that in a moment. Each of our star studded teachers had decorated doors by wonderful room parents, gifts, lunches and more provided by their classes all week long. They were also given different gifts in their boxes every day provided by Friends of Serrania and put together and delivered by volunteers. The week ended with a picture perfect, star studded luncheon put on by FOS and many hard working volunteers. The staff entered their outdoor catered luncheon on a red carpet, flanked by two larger than life Oscars. They were treated to a delicious Mediterranean lunch, fit for any Hollywood star. The staff was able to walk the red carpet, then take pictures in the FOS photo booth, relax and

One of the greatest joys in life is to be involved in your child’s school. It doesn’t matter if you volunteer a couple of times during the school year, or more often. You do what works with your schedule.

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been 6 years, already. I guess the saying is true: Time flies when you’re having fun. Volunteering at Serrania Charter has been an extremely rewarding experience. My introduction to volunteering was helping Coach Danny with PE on Monday mornings. That was fun when I was young! I volunteered for several years in the gift shop, at the book fair, during school movies and performances. I also helped in many lead positions, including: Room Parent, Box Tops Coordinator, Walkathon, and Collating the Tuesday Packet. I enjoyed all my volunteer positions but the one I loved the most was collating the Tuesday Packet. This position allowed me to master new skills and take a lead, which I learned to do very well over the course of 3 years. I met so many wonderful teachers, staff, assistants, and parent volunteers in the “Copy Shed”! If you want to know the inner workings of the school just hang out in the copy shed, every Monday morning for three years. You will leave knowing much, much more than you ever thought you would. I am going to miss all the incredible people I have met along the way and I will cherish my time at Serrania, forever.

I first started volunteering at Serrania to be closer to my children. Little did I know that the sense of community and belonging that we all got from our time here would not only bring us closer as a family but develop friendships that will last a lifetime. We are so truly grateful.

It feels like yesterday when we started our journey at Serrania. It all began with a phone call asking if we were still interested in coming to Serrania. We pulled our son out of the school he was attending a month into the school year, already settled in & making friends. We wondered about his transition to a new school but Mrs. Austin was wonderful, making him feel welcome & a part of her class on his first day. Several kids took him under their wing & introduced him to their friends. I decided to volunteer in the classroom, which led to a parent asking me to help them with the yearbook & soon after that I found myself on the board of the PTA & FOS. So, here we are, 9 years later, with our 2 kids venturing into the world of middle & high school. I can’t believe it went by so fast! We knew we had made the right choice in switching to Serrania. Thank you, Serrania teachers & staff, for all that you do to for the children each & every day, we’ve had a fantastic journey.

Over the years, I have been the surprise reader in kindergarten, and did a few art lessons and helped in the classroom in 1st and 2nd grade. In 3rd grade, I chaperoned on field trips and class parties, and in 4th grade I wasn’t needed as much but helped out in the class with holiday parties. 5th grade has gone by so quickly, and I was fortunate enough to be included in almost all the field trips. Throughout the years, I have also had the chance to leverage my professional skills as a photographer for the yearbook, numerous class events, and for school programs. Whether you volunteer at the welcome back bbq, or help in the food line, you get to meet so many amazing parents. Movie nights, Fun Fair, Book Sale, Holiday Gift Store, Teacher Appreciation Week, and jumping in behind the counter in the front office, all have been great volunteer opportunities. The friendships that I have developed with the other parents are invaluable; but watching my child’s face light up when I am on campus has been Priceless.

I can’t believe we are graduating this year from Serrania! These past seven years have truly been some of the best years of our life! Our family has created so many beautiful memories, made so many wonderful friends and experienced so many magical moments. We will miss our village, our happy place, our safe place, our second home. Whether serving on the FOS board, being a room parent, volunteering at a school event, or coordinating staff appreciation, I’ve always felt valued and appreciated and part of an amazing team. Thank you Serrania Staff and families for all your years of support and dedication to making Serrania shine! You will be missed! Love, Amy L and The Lichtenstein Bunch.

I have been a Serrania Parent for over 10 years, and each year has been special in its own way. What brought me to Serrania was Principal Babbit’s speech and what I saw in the classrooms on the perspective parent school tour. Principal Babbit and some of the teachers I saw that day emphasized that Serrania wanted to support the “whole child” not just solely focus on pure academics. As a former preschool teacher, that resonated with me. Each child is special in their own way, and I liked the fact that The staff at Serrania was nurturing all students and saw growth as more than just grades and test scores. Every year, I have seen examples of how Serrania accomplishes this.

It’s 3,285. The number of days we spent being a Serrania family. Some better than others, and some unforgettable. On day one we met the first of our 11 teachers, and I can honestly say we enjoyed each, and think highly of all of them. Thank you Ms. Sperber, Ms. Rodstein, Ms. Arnesen, Ms. Czigler, Mr. Salkin, Ms. Kerr, Ms. Wolff, Ms. Williams, Ms. Riley, Ms. Ellis and Ms. Fischman. I hope Karina and Dylan live up to the educational start you gave them. It was nothing less than superior. On day two we met the first of our 5 principals. Mom taught me to say nothing if not positive, however it looks like there has been a good move upward in the last two, so thank you Ms. Wedaa and Mr. Alvarado. Please continue the trend. But first and foremost we have met some amazing friends in the parents of the other students. Serrania is a family and we are proud to be part of that family. Their time and efforts in all the events that make Serrania special is what has made this a wonderful experience for our family.

TOBY SPERBER & MORGAN TEELE We enjoyed feeling like we’re part of a community and getting to know the families of our children’s friends. We’re so appreciative of all that Serrania does to enrich the lives of children during these special years. Volunteering is one way that we can contribute and give back. It’s truly been an honor and a privilege to participate as volunteers at Serrania.

I have held many volunteer roles at Serrania, and eventually I became a Staff member. Over the years I have seen how the students, staff and parents have created a supportive community. I am lucky in that even though I will no longer be a parent at Serrania, I will still continue to be a part of this family.

The staff offers such a tremendous amount of support and care. My time at Serrania may have been short, but it has prepared me for a bright future. –Emily Carlyle

My favorite moment was winning the LACMS Scholarship. This was the first music award I have won. I think it was a start to my music career, and really showed who I was not on the outside, but on the inside. It really brought my heart out. – Janglo

My 5th grade experience was awesome. We went on trips and learned new things. It was so fun. All of the aides, teachers, and people in the office were always kind, they cared for us, and wanted all of us to be safe. –Sebastien Foster

Being at Serrania Charter for Enriched Studies was 6 years of wonder and memories. I feel the students were not only part of an amazing learning experience but also an amazing family. The teachers were more than anything I could have asked for. They all made me a student ready for middle school. Now that my time with Serrania is over, it is sad and exciting for a new chapter in my life. I feel prepared for whatever comes next. My best experience at Serrania is how we all shine, not as one, but together. Everyone here has a voice, and can help out in any way. We all are welcome to shine with Serrania. I want to thank all of my teachers I’ve had, for preparing me for middle school. Mr. Alvarado for keeping everything at the school as great as can be. My parents for helping me

Even though I’ve only been in the school since third grade, I’ve never been to a school with so many fundraising events to help the ones in need. Also activities such as PE, art, and even music are so much fun. In the school there are also opportunities such as going the ballroom dancing finals and the musical competition.

Serrania is a school that taught me how to be smarter and braver. I was here from 3rd - 5th grade. All of the teachers are kind, nice, and smart. It is a place that I can never forget. When I first came to this school, I could not write, read, and speak English. I tried my best and see, I can write now. It has a good PE, aides, and a good Principal. I always have fun at this school, it is a good place to have fun and learn. – Sephir K.

– Sanjana

Going to Catalina Island changed my perspective of marine life. I didn’t think that toothpaste was made of algae! I also thought that learning about marine plants were BORING, until I went to Catalina. – Miah

I think that being a Peer Mediator was the best thing in 5th grade. It totally changed my perspective, making me stop and think, ”Would this be a kind thing to do?” It also helped me with my grades by learning to calm down. – Mai

My favorite experience of 5 grade was the teachers. They all have completely different styles of teaching. That’s why it was awesome having all of them through science. th

succeed and do the best I can. It’s so hard to leave this wonderful experience. I feel like I grew up with the school. All year long I’d hear, “Nothing will work unless you do,” or “You can’t expect to know everything on first sight.” These words let me know a student practices and works for success. This helped me a lot. I have met so many amazing people here and so many friends that I wish I could have after this year, but this is where the Serrania culminating class of 2016 splits up and progresses further. So my best experience at Serrania Charter for Enriched Studies was having more than one family, one at home and one at school. These six years were “The Best Time of My Life.”

I started to attend Serrania in 2013 in 3rd grade. My first event was the “Welcome BBQ” and everyone was so welcoming and nice. The years have gone by have improved me both academically and mentally. – Sasha

–Evan Varady

My favorite memory at Serrania was when we performed for the elderly. It was my favorite memory because I saw the elderly smiling and that made me real happy. – Alexandra

As I leave, I would like to say thank you, to the sweetest teacher; Mrs. Luu and Serrania’s most hidden treasure; Mrs. Vasallo. I would miss my friends and Ms. Lisa. I will miss Serrania deeply. – Gianina S.

One of the experiences that I thought was important was ballroom dancing. It opened up my mind to seeing that dancing with a boy wasn’t so bad, and that it got me into something new and interested in. I’m glad I did it. –Lauren E.

I think that the Ronald Reagan Library was one of the best trips because it taught me a lot about him. Pick up Posse was also a good choice because we were role models of the school. – Kiran
