VENTURA ARTS CENTER PROJECT: MIXED-USE, ARTS CENTER | LOCATION: VENTURA, CA | DATE: WINTER 2016 COLLABORATION: JORGE NEVE + NICK FOLEY + JOSE QUINTERO
The city of Ventura was separate from one of its most important assets when the Route 101 was constructed between the city and the sea. VENTURA ARTS CENTER was envisioned as a multipurpose project where the interdisciplinary team defined a set of goals that would be achieved by The project. Connect the city to the sea, revitalize the area and bring new life, promote culture and social integration, create and icon for the city and create new business opportunities. The project proposes the “creation of new land by building over the freeway. The project combines new and existing elements to connect the city and the sea with the goal of forgetting the great divider underneath .
CIRCULATION
ACCESSIBILITY
CONNECTIVITY
The existing circulation is a design constraint and an opportunity that shapes where the building can have a more open connection to the city.
The multiple access points in the project help a more varied and constant flow of users in and out of the building. The possibility of closing any access point when the building is not in use helps maintain the project clean and safe.
The connectivity to different parts of the city is achieved through the openings found on California Street and Thompson Blvd, and elements like the Ventura View Line.

INTERIOR (MUSEUM)
The project takes advantage of the on-ramp (Ventura View Line) that goes through the site and by making it pedestrian and bike friendly it reaches out to the pier and creates a visual connection with the surroundings than can be physically achieved. The addition of natural light to the museum happens with a customized roof that resembles the wave movement and indirectly gets natural light in the museum. Natural ventilation utilizes the same system where the hot air is pushed to the exterior through the controlled openings of the roof. GSEducationalVersion
The museum has an exhibition of the city on the first floor and combines some art exhibitions on both floor, where the surf exhibitions is located only on the second floor, where the sea can be appreciated along the museum’s edge. EXTERIOR PLAZA (MUSEUM)

A solar protection surrounds the museum area since it has to maintain direct sunlight out but allows for the visitors inside to look at the surroundings. The protection helps make the venue an icon when the light illuminates the different hanging colored panels.

BROAD AND BRANCH PROJECT: MIXED-USE (RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL) | LOCATION: SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA | DATE: SPRING 2016
COLLABORATION: JORGE NEVE + ANGELICA QUACH
2
INDOOR / OUTDOOR RELATIONSHIPS The location of the project becomes an important factor when it comes to the initial design approach of the building. The diverse neighborhoods allow for a connection with the history of the area and the new needs of mixed-use projects. Relating the material exposure to a more industrial look in some areas and a dynamic and open shape, the project that once was shaped out of two cubes is able to look at the elements in the surroundings. The intent is to have a project that addresses the needs of the city by creating a housing + commercial program in the site. The buildings will help shape the interior spaces to create a courtyard and interesting views for the users. The residential units will populate the higher levels and by separating every unit, openings that allow the entrance of light and private balconies/ terraces become the shaping factor of the Broad and Branch facades.
Circulations
Accessibility
Courtyard
The project has multiple staircases and elevators that efficiently connect most of the units directly with an amenity.
Four different entrances connect Broad and Branch, making it an open, accessible and desirable project to visit.
A central courtyard becomes the heart of the project, turning it into one of the most active and interesting space for everyone in the complex.

Underground Mechanical parking is available for cars on the Branch entrance. The open bike parking space is located on the side of Broad street.
The buildings have separations between each unit, resulting in a more open, illuminated well-ventilated and dynamic project.
Every unit in the building has the option of amazing views of the city, not even the interior of the project prevents the users to enjoy the view.
