The last twelve months it felt like this theatre matured. Working with a range of inspiring partners we made some of the best work we’ve ever produced here in Bristol, and we exported it around the country as well; gaining an Olivier nomination and producing hits in London, Edinburgh and elsewhere. Next year looks set, dare we say it, to be even better. I am excited about Christmas as I have been for ages, looking forward to welcoming the brilliant creatives that have been working for months on The Last Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor plus the trusted team that are making Super Sam and Mega Max Save Christmas. Alongside the surefire hit As You Like It, SATTF will be producing their first contemporary play with one of the undeniably great works of the 20th Century, Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia. In the Brewery Theatre highlights include Paines Plough with the wonderful Kate Tempest’s new show Hopelessly Devoted as well as Supporting Wall with the incredible new Philip Ridley play Dark Vanilla Jungle. We are proud to be producing ever more work ourselves: apart from the two Christmas shows, we are producing a Chris Goode creation (Infinite Lives), a new play from Tobacco Factory Theatres favourite Thomas Eccleshare, a new tour of the wonderful Banksy: The Room in the Elephant and a new production of a 500 year old play in Arnos Vale Cemetery (Death and the Ploughman). Anyone who has been to the Factory Theatre over the last few months will have noticed the new seating: it’s infinitely more comfortable, better raked and smarter and we’re thrilled with it. From early 2014 we are introducing reserved seating, in response to overwhelming feedback from audiences. Initially you can reserve seats for As You Like It, Arcadia and Banksy: The Room in the Elephant and we anticipate reserved seating for more shows over the next year. Finally – we are changing our name. All this activity means that our beloved name of Tobacco Factory Theatre was struggling to cope. We are making the small change to Tobacco Factory Theatres so that we can better describe all the work we do. We hope you like the change, if you even notice it, and we hope we see lots of you during this season.

Our theatres are situated just south of the river in the heart of bustling Southville.

We are just a 20 minute walk from the Centre (Arnolfini/MShed area) and a 30 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads and Bedminster train stations.

Bus numbers 25 or 24 from North Bristol, Broadmead, the City Centre and Redcliffe Hill stop outside the Tobacco Factory. Currently the last bus leaves at 10.42pm Monday – Sunday from outside Aldi.

BY BIKE

Both theatres are very accessible by bike from all areas of Bristol and we have bike racks inside the Tobacco Factory, on the wall of the Factory, on the corner of Raleigh Road and North Street and outside the Brewery Theatre.

There is on street parking in the surrounding area and an Aldi supermarket car park next door usable, strictly after 7pm, but please note: at the time of print Aldi has a 1 and a half hour parking restriction if you park before 7pm with a 4 hour no return period and a hefty £70 fine!

Written by the critically acclaimed Chris Goode, Infinite Lives is an erotic, numerical and technological journey into a world which is increasingly using the virtual to define itself. So you fall to your death. But you don’t die. You just come back to life and you’re falling. You’re falling and dying and coming back to life and falling. And you’ll never die. You have infinite lives. John’s cat died a year ago. Now he’s quit his job and is trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to write his new gay science fiction novel. He’s also become obsessed with an internet chatroom model. Called Carlos. He thinks. As the bit streams of data fly past and reality becomes ever harder to define, John is forced to question how much he is still in control of his own life. Chris Goode is the award winning writer of shows including The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley, Hippo World Guest Book and most recently, Monkey Bars. Like much of Goode’s work, Infinite Lives is hauntingly poetic; it explores what it means to be lonely in an age when we have more means to connect with each other than ever before. The first full UK production of Infinite Lives will be directed by Nik Partridge, graduate director from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, who is working with Tobacco Factory Theatres this year as part of the BBC Theatre Fellowship 2013. In response to the riots of August 2011, Bernadette Russell made a promise that she would be kind to a stranger every single day for a year. 366 Days of Kindness tells the heartbreaking, surprising and challenging stories that came out of that year; the year that began with burning buildings and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch, against a global backdrop of social unrest and economic crisis. Following a sell out run at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a transfer to the Arcola Theatre, London, Tom Wainwright’s wildly successful play returns home to our Brewery Theatre. Banksy was in LA for the Oscars when he sprayed ‘THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT’ on an old water tank. The tank was residence for a local legend, Tachowa Covington, who over seven years had furnished it with carpets, a stove – even CCTV. As news spread of Banksy’s latest work, a consortium of art dealers soon appeared to repossess the water tank. Suddenly, Tachowa was homeless again… Starring Gary Beadle (Eastenders’s Paul Truman as well as acclaimed roles in the Royal Court’s Sucker Punch and Chichester Festival Theatre’s Blue Remembered Hills) – this is a story about creating something from nothing and then having it taken away, in the name of art. Tom Wainwright’s play, originally commissioned by Tobacco Factory Theatres and a Play, a Pie and a Pint at Òran Mór, is directed by Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre and Co-artistic Director of Theatre Uncut, Emma Callander. CINDERELLA: A FAIRYTALE

BANKSY: THE ROOM IN THE ELEPHANT The hit of our 2012 series a Play, a Pie and a Pint (co-produced with Òran Mór) and the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival (co-produced with The Sum). Banksy: The Room in the Elephant (P25), will play the Factory Theatre this spring and will tour to the Arcola Theatre, London, Oxford Playhouse, Sherman Cymru and Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

We worked with Kid Carpet to produce his new show Blast Off! which premiered in our Brewery Theatre during October half term. We will be touring nationally with him until spring 2014.

A NEW PLAY BY THOMAS ECCLESHARE We’re developing our a Play, a Pie and a Pint series (co-produced with Òran Mór) and have commissioned a new play by Thomas Eccleshare (Dancing Brick / The Prince in Cinderella: A Fairytale), which will open in the Brewery Theatre (P25) and then transfer to Òran Mór, Glasgow.

DEVELOPING WORK From September to December 2013 we supported the early stage development of ten new ideas for shows, through artist residencies, our Prototype scratch night and invited-audience sharings, engaging more than 30 artists from Bristol and beyond.

GIVING BACK Every season we try and give one night of our programme free of charge to a local charity for fundraising or other purposes. Last year charities that benefited included Gathering Voices, BRACE and MusicSpace. Through our biannual DNA (Developing New Audiences) scheme, in October we toured an acclaimed piece of new writing (Fog by Toby Wharton and Tash Fairbanks) to secondary schools in disadvantaged areas of Bristol. We also donated over 400 complimentary tickets to events last year to community groups and charities, a value of £5000.

Hear from the cast, too, and get a real feel for how this internationally renowned company does what it does. Included in the ticket price is a delicious buffet sourced from local independent businesses. Please note that these talks are not ‘an introduction’ to the season’s shows; we ask that everyone attending them has already seen the production in question, as this allows the discussion to be both deeper and more wide-ranging.

Exploring The Depraved Appetite of Tarrare the Freak Sat 29 March This special event offers a unique insight into how theatre and science can work together to engage with the more grotesque aspects of being human. Using the development of their brand new chamber opera for puppets as a case study, Bristol-based Wattle & Daub present a day of workshops, demonstrations and talks exploring the representation of extraordinary physiology in performance. From his beginnings as a sideshow freak in 18th Century Paris, to his service as a spy during the French Revolution, Tarrare – a diagnosed polyphagist* – lived a life that is as compelling as it is unbelievable. Wattle & Daub’s in-progress show tells the story of his insatiable hunger using puppetry, movement and a thrilling original score. Script Sessions The Writers’ Forum A Harlot’s Progress By Dougie Blaxland Sun 30 March 7.30pm Based on William Hogarth’s engravings of 1731, Dougie Blaxland’s dramatisation of A Harlot’s Progress tells the tragic story of Moll Hackabout, a sixteen year old country girl who arrives in London full of hope and dreams of a better life. But Moll is soon sucked into the sordid world of London’s sex-trade and within three years her ‘progress’ is complete as her life reaches its all too tragic conclusion. On days when performances are scheduled, the Box Office will be open until the start of the performance. If there is a show scheduled on a Sunday or during public holidays, the Box Office will be open for 2 hours prior to the performance. At certain times of the year e.g. summer or Christmas, our opening hours may vary. Please check the times on the website before you make a special trip.

PAYMENT

We accept all major credit and debit cards except American Express. A booking fee of 50p for 1 ticket or £1 for 2 or more tickets applies to all card transactions. We cannot offer refunds, but tickets can be exchanged for another performance of the same production up to 48 hours before the show (subject to availability). An administration charge of £1 applies. Please do be aware that a booking fee of £2.50 per transaction will be charged for online bookings. Bookings made direct with the Theatre either in person or by phone do not incur a fee other than the card-handling fee described above.

GROUPS

For certain performances, for every ten tickets bought by a school or group, the eleventh is free. Other group discounts may apply. Please ask the Box Office for further details.

CONCESSIONS

Concessions may be available for children (16 and under), over 60s, registered disabled, equity members, students and benefit claimants. Concessions are available at the discretion of the producing company, so may not be available for all productions. When collecting concessionary tickets, proof of concession must be provided.

SUNDAY MARKET Every week 10am - 2.30pm The Sunday market is a cornerstone of the Southville community, offering affordable food and crafts, locally made bread, cakes, farm food, sausages and pies, flowers and much more. Our vintage & retro market ‘Retroville’ occurs on the first Sunday of every month, with clothing, jewellery, ornaments, records and even a vintage tea room, running alongside the regular market.
