Welcome This season at the Tobacco Factory Theatre bears witness to the fantastic health of Bristol’s theatre scene. Following our extraordinary production of Cinderella last Christmas (which is playing the St James’ Theatre in London this year) we are thrilled to be co-producing Hansel and Gretel with one of my favourite theatre companies, NIE. This show is already selling insanely well so do book soon. SATTF bring us the mouth-watering prospect of Richard III, one of my favourite Shakespeares and certainly my favourite history, and Two Gentlemen of Verona, possibly the brightest, funniest and generally zestiest of Shakespearean comedies, before heading out on their first ever national tour. We produce our own Christmas show for younger children for the first time, The Lost Present, and have an all-round almighty Brewery programme to complement the gorgeous café that’s recently opened there; we continue to be incredibly ambitious for this intimate theatre. Our comedy line-up, which has now extended to the Brewery theatre, is really excellent – I’m particularly looking forward to the unique Simon Munnery. I really hope you find shows to love in this season and that we see you here soon.

Bus numbers 25 or 24 from North Bristol, Broadmead, the City Centre and Redcliffe Hill stop outside the Tobacco Factory. Currently the last bus leaves at 10.42pm Monday – Sunday from outside Aldi.

By Bike

Both theatres are very accessible by bike from all areas of Bristol and we have bike racks inside the Tobacco Factory, on the wall of the Factory, on the corner of Raleigh Road and North Street and outside The Brewery.

Parking

There is plenty of on street parking in the surrounding area and an Aldi supermarket car park next door usable, strictly after 7pm, but please note: at the time of print Aldi has a 2 hour parking restriction if you park before 7pm with a 4 hour no return period and a hefty £70 fine!

The Ministry of Entertainment return to the TFT with a reworking of their hit show Yes, We Have No Bananas, part of MoE’s highly successful wartime trilogy. Like Doodlebugs and Bogeymen and Keep Smiling Through, Yes, We Have No Bananas is based on oral histories collected by the company from those who lived in Bristol, Somerset and Dorset during the war years. The action takes place in a grocery shop in Weymouth during the lead up to D-Day. In true MOE fashion, into the shop come a variety of customers, from the indomitable Mrs Fricker to the Yank who will eventually win the heart of Doreen, the shopkeeper’s daughter. This new production is written by Joe Hobbs, with music by Kit Morgan and is performed by Kate McNab and Ross Harvey. Yes, We Have No Bananas promises to be comic, sometimes bizarre, respectful and authentic and interwoven with lovely songs of the era.

Sheelanagig and friends Back at the Tobacco Factory Theatre for their fifth annual Christmas party, Sheelanagig host an evening of entertainment which is not to be missed. Where do we come from and what makes us who we are? Is our destiny written in the stars or stamped in a passport? We all have a journey to make, stupid girl, even you. Born on the very first day of a new nation, Hashi, the girl who always smiles, grew up surrounded by flying tigers in the Sunderban jungles. In The Tiger and the Moustache, local actor and writer Saikat Ahamed (TFT’s Cinderella: A Fairytale, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Bristol Old Vic’s Treasure Island and Peter Pan) traces the journey of Hashi, his mother, and the emerging nation of Bangladesh. Travel with him as he slides in and out of time, from the agonies of Partition in 1947 right up to the present day, boarding fishing boats up the Meghna River and rickshaws along the dusty roads of Dacca.

A stunning piece of visual theatre that explores our relationship with books, reading and the imagination. Idle Motion return to the Brewery Theatre with their Total Theatre Award-nominated show Borges and I, an evocative exploration of the life of the writer Jorge Luis Borges, who questioned and translated the world around him. Through the use of multimedia, imaginative staging and skilled storytelling, Idle Motion brings forth images of labyrinths, tigers and a universe of libraries. Meanwhile, a couple meet at a haphazard and ill-conceived book group, brought together through their shared love of literature. Idle Motion are a young company with big ideas and a passion for creating new work. They developed Borges and I in association with Greenwich Theatre and the New Diorama Theatre, where they are an Associate Company. They are also supported by Arts Council England, the British Council and award-winning actress Juliet Stevenson.

From East London to East Bengal, taking in Birmingham, Germany and Glasgow, this story of Bangladesh is woven together through storytelling, theatre, live music, dance and a healthy amount of humour.

And what do even the most adored of women count for in a profoundly masculine world? Shakespeare’s vision is shocking and extraordinarily modern. In the cells under the Old Bailey, Angela meets her client who is on trial for murder. “I didn’t do it.” He says. “The Bear did it.” He’s obviously lying. Or mad. This is London after all. But when she examines all the evidence, reads all the files, there it is again. The Bear. Someone else saw it. Without quite knowing why, Angela finds herself hunting The Bear. Until she discovers The Bear is hunting her.

Choose any role in the reconstruction you like: bouncer, barman, critic, a member of the rowdy party table, or even the comedian himself. When your time comes, can you die with some dignity?

Prototype is quite simply one of the most exhilarating nights out in Bristol’s theatrical calendar. Prototype audiences love theatre. They want theatre to be the best it can be, and that’s why they’re the most supportive, engaged and generous champions of live performance around. Tobacco Factory Theatre’s Script Space is one of the UK’s largest open new writing competitions, inviting submissions of unperformed one-act plays from UK-based writers for tailormade development opportunities. It’s very simple, really: we’re looking for exciting writing from exciting writers whom we’d like to work with further. We are interested in plays about anything, by anybody, for any audience. We’re looking for writers who’ve got something that speaks to us about our lives today, about the world in which we live – be it the absurdity, tragedy or beauty of it – with clarity, intention and heart. We’re looking for something we’ve never seen before, be that a promenade site-specific farce about pig-farming with a cast of thirty, or a monologue in spotlight for an audience of one. Our popular Lunchtime Talks are becoming something of an institution, and it’s pretty easy to see why. SATTF’s artistic director Andrew Hilton is a consummate public speaker and his reflections on how he arrived at his staging of this season’s plays make for fascinating listening. There’s a chance to hear from the cast, too, and to find out how their understanding of the plays developed over the course of rehearsals. It’s stimulating stuff, and a rare opportunity to get a real feel for how this internationally renowned company do what they do. And let’s not forget lunch! Opening Hours 10am – 6.30pm Monday to Saturday (exc. Public holidays) On days when performances are scheduled, the Box Office will be open until the start of the performance. If there is a show scheduled on a Sunday or during public holidays, the Box Office will be open for 2 hours prior to the performance.

Payment

We accept all major credit and debit cards except American Express. A booking fee of 50p for 1 ticket or £1 for 2 or more tickets applies to all card transactions. We cannot offer refunds, but tickets can be exchanged for another performance of the same production up to 48 hours before the show (subject to availability). An administration charge of £1 applies. Please do be aware that a booking fee of £2.50 per transaction will be charged for online bookings. Bookings made direct with the Theatre either in person or by phone do not incur a fee other than the card-handling fee described above.

CONCESSIONS

Concessions may be available for children (16 and under), over 60s, registered disabled, equity members, students and benefit claimants. Concessions are available at the discretion of the visiting company, so may not be available for all productions. When collecting concessionary tickets, proof of concession must be provided.
