ON SALE DATES MAY – A

WELCOME We have a wonderful season ahead packed with fantastic festivals such as Mayfest (P10) and Brouhaha (P28); stunning new and contemporary plays like Blue Stockings (P15); the return of one of Bristol’s great productions to commemorate WWI (Private Peaceful, P16) and more. I know the shows are the most important thing, but I also want to shout about four things about the way that we operate:

1. We’ve removed booking fees! Feedback constantly told us that people hate them – I do myself – and we’re thrilled to be able to cut them altogether. 2. Reserved seating is great. The logistics of providing it in a flexible theatre were challenging but it’s working brilliantly and we’re rolling it out across more shows. 3. Our newly refurbished Factory Theatre Bar is great. Now that you don’t have to queue, do please take time to enjoy it. Also, we’re going to start programming some ad hoc performances in it (keep an eye on our website).

TOM STOPPARD

As news spread of Banksy’s latest work, a consortium of art dealers soon appeared to repossess the water tank. Suddenly, Tachowa was homeless again.

Intriguing, challenging and witty – but also heartfelt – this play has been widely acclaimed as Stoppard’s masterpiece.

Starring Gary Beadle (Eastenders’s Paul Trueman as well as acclaimed roles in the Royal Court’s Sucker Punch and Chichester Festival Theatre’s Blue Remembered Hills) – this is a story about creating something from nothing and then having it taken away, in the name of art.

Expelled from the city, Rosalind and Orlando – the one fleeing a tyrannous uncle, the other a murderous brother – rediscover each other in the Forest of Arden. But what awaits them in that Arcadian wilderness? Will they find true love, or just lose themselves? Are they merely players in a pastoral fantasy, or do they have a rare opportunity to explore the reality of their feelings free from all the normal constrictions of courtly convention and parental oversight?

Crossing the centuries – and changing notions of the Arcadian dream – are mysteries of history, sex, chaos theory and Newtonian equations; and an accusation of murder against Lord Byron. SATTF is proud to present Arcadia as its first contemporary theatre production.

Tom Wainwright’s play, originally commissioned by Tobacco Factory Theatres and a Play, a Pie and a Pint at Òran Mór, is directed by Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre and Co-artistic Director of Theatre Uncut, Emma Callander. It will be followed by a screening of Something From Nothing, documentary maker Hal Samples’ short film about Tachowa, edited from material gathered over 7 years.

NEW ART CLUB

New Art Club present an uplifting, life-affirming and hilarious spectacle about how we ‘feel’ about our bodies. Feel About Your Body

Expect silliness, a man talking to his bottom and a lesson in what not to do during a heart attack. Sexy and intellectual, Feel About Your Body has already left some people feeling ‘a little bit dirty’. Warning: this show contains brief nudity (long enough to see ‘the works’), brief dancing (silly and emotional), and some puerile songs (there’s a really rather good one about a shed). New Art Club, loved by audiences and critics alike, bring you an evening of beautifully engineered physical and verbal lunacy. “Physical comedy with brains, I laughed ‘til my face hurt” The Observer “Best kept secret in comedy” **** Beyond The Joke

The Olivier award-winning OperaUpClose are back, following incredible sold out performances of Tosca and La bohème in the Factory Theatre over the past couple of years. The story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future, La Traviata has been thrilling audiences for generations.

La Traviata / Image: Chris Tribble

Atlantic city, 1928 – prohibition, speakeasies and bootlegging. Violetta’s lover, Alfredo, is a passionate young man whose optimism has been shaken by his time at the front in the First World War. Together with his crooked politician father and Violetta’s gang-boss protector, ‘the Baron’, he exposes the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties. Featuring a stunning young cast whose acting abilities are more than a match for their vocal talents, Verdi’s sumptuous melodies are accompanied by a trio of clarinet, cello and piano. “OperaUpClose is leading an artistic revolution” The Sunday Times “OperaUpClose is the brand leader” The Evening Standard

FINE CHISEL

BRISTOL OLD VIC THEATRE SCHOOL Written by Jessica Swale Directed by Donnacadh O’Briain

In 1896 at Cambridge University, something deeply unsettling and utterly baffling is happening. The women are revolting. A fast paced mini-epic, centred around a key battleground on the march towards equal rights. Girton College, Cambridge 1896 – knowledge is power.

Blue Stockings / Image: Adrian Barclay Design

With the feminist and suffragette movement building momentum, a small group of determined educationalists and aspiring students are campaigning for young women to have the right to graduate. What they come up against is the prevailing wind of the day; science that tells them too much education could whither their wombs, and a social stigma that academic achievement leads to loss of femininity, along with any chance of marriage, a family or any normal life. This is a story of young women, ordinary in their desires, but extraordinary in their place in history. It shows us where we have come from, and challenges us to look at where we are now. Originally produced at the Globe Theatre London, Blue Stockings is a shocking and stirring play, which will send you out of the theatre feeling elated, appalled, and thoroughly educated. “Always a joy to watch – They may be students but they are professionals in training and constantly deliver to the highest possible standards” Audience Member, 2014 “The electrifying London premiere...O’Briain’s production generates an intense, interrogatory intimacy” Independent on Sunday (Critics Choice) **** on The Early Bird, directed by Donnacadh O’Briain Running time 2hrs 30mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 12+ SARAH SMITH, Chairman, Tobacco Factory Theatres Board

Fine Chisel present their Fringe First and MTN Award-winning play with songs, about the loneliest whale in the world. Fiona is losing her voice. Mal is losing his faith. Ted is losing his marbles. Somewhere in the North Pacific, a lonely whale sings. Armed with a stage full of instruments and a box of chalk, Fine Chisel’s award-winning actor-musicians conjure the rush of waves, the buzz of a 1960s pirate radio station and the far-from-dry world of marine mammal bioacoustics. Fine Chisel are based in Bristol, but their playful theatre and live music has taken them around the UK – from intimate studios to raucous festivals, local pubs and out on the streets busking. PRIVATE PEACEFUL MICHAEL MORPURGO

POONAMALLEE PRODUCTIONS

Adapted by & directed by Simon Reade Associate Director Alison Reid Sound Design Jason Barnes

Poonamallee Productions’ 10th anniversary production, commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War. I’ve had nearly eighteen years of yesterdays and tomorrows, and tonight I must remember as many of them as I can. Tonight, more than any other night of my life, I want to feel alive! Private Peaceful relives the life of a young, First World War soldier as he awaits the firing squad at dawn. Growing up in rural Devon. His exciting first days at school. The accident in the forest that killed his father. His adventures with Molly, the love of his life. And the battles and injustices of war that have brought him to the Front Line. First performed in Bristol in April 2004, Private Peaceful has since triumphed in Edinburgh and the West End, off-Broadway and across the UK, via Dublin and Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. A decade on, this new production of the most affecting of all Morpurgo’s stories, returns to Bristol to commemorate one hundred years since the outbreak of the First World War. “Morpurgo’s magic, a masterly adaptation by Simon Reade” Daily Mail Photography: E (AUS) 577 Courtesy of the Imperial War Museum London

THE TIME MACHINE NUNKIE THEATRE COMPANY

H. G. Wells’ science fiction classic is brought to life in another thrilling one man show from Nunkie, the company behind the much loved M. R. James Trilogy. I have lived such days as no man has lived before… 1895. In a suburban garden, beneath a waning moon, a man lies dazed beside a remarkable machine. He has a story to tell. A story of darkness and light. Of fire and fear. Of Eloi and Morlocks. An unbelievable story about our future that he insists is true… Is it a joke? A prophecy? A dream? TRIPLE BILL 3RD STAGE DANCE

Moving, elegant, inspiring and loving; an evening of dance and music that stays true to its traditional classical roots through an extraordinary range of creations. 3rd Stage Dance Company return to Tobacco Factory Theatres after their sell out performance Piano Moves. This triple bill starts with an elegant and beautiful creation – JustWORDS – a study of words and their meaning from a single short message to an interpretation of an entire story. The second part Invitation Only shows work by invited choreographers Steve Johnstone (Off The Map Dance Company) and Kerry Biggin (Principal Dancer and Rehearsal Director of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures) and welcomes to the stage a performance by RISE, one of Bristol’s leading youth dance companies. The third and final part of the evening, Never Brought to Mind, is accompanied by live music from The Ryan O’Reilly Band giving a feature evening of their tour. With harmonies that find their way through every bone in your body and sound so sweet it nurtures your soul, they give stories and identities for the people in the street. 3rd Stage Dance Company create opportunities for dancers to return to dance after time away. It brings desire and passion to the stage through classical contemporary dance that is accessible and enjoyable for all ages. “3rd Stage Dance Company seems to have an incredibly solid and morally grounded ethos which makes it very unique...as an audience member it was a very inspiring performance” Richard Chappell, Choreographer Running time approx. 2hrs 20mins (inc. two intervals)

PETER CLIFFORD, Actor and Magician

The way that Robert Lloyd Parry brings stories to life, using the author’s own words to draw us in, is theatrical magic. I wish I could go forward in time and see this show now... then go back in time to see it again.

THE TIGER AND SNAKEBITE THE MOUSTACHE SEE P03

DARKHORSE THEATRE

Saikat Ahamed’s acclaimed, energetic and vibrant play, which started life in the Brewery Theatre last year, is back at Tobacco Factory Theatres this summer, following a national tour. We all have a journey to make, stupid girl, even you. Born on the very first day of a new nation, Hashi, the girl who always smiles, grew up surrounded by flying tigers in the Sunderban jungles.

The Tiger and the Moustache / Image: Saikat Ahamed

Join local actor and writer Saikat Ahamed (Cinderella: A Fairytale, The Last Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor and Bristol Old Vic’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) as he traces the journey of his mother, sliding in and out of time from the agonies of Partition in 1947 right up to the present day; find yourself in the fishing boats of the Megna River and the rickshaws of the dusty roads of Dacca.

A furious, dynamic and highly original new play written and directed by Vanessa Brooks and presented by one of the UK’s most daring and innovative national touring companies. Mixy Maddson’s a short story writer. And a party girl too. At the Prairie club every Friday night she hangs loose, let’s rip and goes way, way too far. But with bills to pay, a deadline on Monday and the last drink still wet on her lips, she’s forced by her slimy cousin to dig deep and dirty into the crazed Wild West of her imagination. When the lines blur and the unreal becomes real, the bullets fly, the venom kicks in and high plains justice spills like sweet strong liquor all over the harsh real world that Mixy’s running from. A stunning, physical production from the highly regarded Dark Horse ensemble, Snakebite features ten exceptional professionally trained actors with learning disabilities and a spine tingling originally composed score.

From East London to East Bengal, from Barisal to Birmingham, the story of Bangladesh is woven together through storytelling, theatre, live music, dance and a healthy amount of humour.

MIMIC

PART OF THE BRISTOL PROMS

PRESENTED BY TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES Written, Composed and Performed by Raymond Scannell Directed and Designed by Tom Creed

Performed at a grand piano, Mimic is a dark satire exploring imitation, authenticity, and what happens to a nation that leaves its heritage behind. Poetic and prescient, this virtuosic solo performance from Raymond Scannell (Infinite Lives), tells the story of Julian Neary, whose childhood gift for mimicry – from Columbo and Jimmy Stewart to Billie Holiday and Morrissey – becomes his ticket out of 1980s Ireland, until the chaos he sees in the outside world reflects his own chaos within.

Mimic / Image: Colm Hogan

Winner of Best Male Performer at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2008 and 2013, Ray Scannell takes the audience on a moving and mesmerising journey. Tobacco Factory Theatres co-produced Mimic on a tour of Ireland in 2008. We’re absolutely delighted to bring this incredible piece to Bristol and for it to be performed as part of the Bristol Proms at Bristol Old Vic. We’re also thrilled to welcome back the talented Ray Scannell, who performed in Infinite Lives at Tobacco Factory Theatres earlier this year. “Like some unhinged 21st Century beat poet in a piano bar…a virtuoso performance” The New York Times “A compelling constellation...vertiginous, playful and poignant” Irish Theatre Magazine Running time 1hr 15mins

STALIN’S DAUGHTER BLUE BROOK PRODUCTIONS Written by David Lane Directed by Ed Viney Produced by Kevin Cattell

The incredible true story of how Josef Stalin’s daughter came to make her new life in Clifton, Bristol. They never ask me who I am, or why I came. Only when I plan on leaving. Leaving three husbands and the fall of the Soviet Union in her wake, Svetlana Alliluyeva seeks a place to reflect on the horrors of her past and to escape her father’s name. After defecting to the United States, she assumes a new name, Lana Peters, before moving on to England. To Bristol. To Clifton. But a new name doesn’t give you a new identity. Whether she calls herself Svetlana or Lana, she is still Stalin’s daughter. David Lane’s previous work includes the Meyer-Whitworth nominated BEGIN/END and he is the author of Contemporary British Drama. Bristol based Blue Brook Productions is led by Kevin Cattell and Ed Viney. Their previous productions have included the sell-out shows The Dolphin Crossing and An Audience with Horace Batchelor at Tobacco Factory Theatres, and the first revival of Arthur Miller’s Danger: Memory! at Jermyn Street Theatre. “Superb...a pair of fine performances full of subtle affection and quiet sorrow” The Daily Telegraph on Danger: Memory! The past contains wars, witches, Kim Jong-il and your ex. Your brain can recall being a child, while your body remembers being a monkey. Everything that has happened shapes who we are today…does free will even exist? Who cares! As seen on QI, Buzzcocks and Live At The Apollo, Sara Pascoe is here to amuse us with her joking!

As seen and heard on BBC’s Mock The Week, Russell Howard’s Good News & Radio 4’s Can’t Tell Nathan Caton Nothing, Nathan Caton, delivers a brand new hour of hilarity. Filled with heart-warming tales of his larger-than-life West Indian family, and his sharp, on-the-point social anecdotes, this is a show not to be missed!

A stand up show about feeling bamboozled by the modern world. Join Lloyd Langford for a brand new hour of gags, anecdotes, riffs and occasional exasperated pleas to the sky. Will contain jokes about CGI, plugs and gang bangs. As heard on BBC Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth and BBC Radio Wales’ The Rhod Gilbert show.

American Erich McElroy became British in 2007. Then the SNP won in Scotland. Now they want freedom. Coincidence? Yes. But it worries him. And while he’s originally from America his ancestry is Scottish. Being British felt like coming home. Now they’re tearing the top floor off his old family house. Who better than an American turned Brit with Scottish ancestry to sort it all out?

John Robins is a young, effortlessly funny former Bristol comedian who is a contemporary of Russell Howard and Jon Richardson. His distinctive, self-absorbed comedy marks him out as someone who is uniquely different and deserves your attention if you’ve not seen him before.

CAREY MARX

TOM ALLEN

Brand new show from this unapologetic gagsmith. Carey Marx is definitely one for the connoisseur of comedy writing. The jokes are short and sharp, often uncomfortably so, as any morality is sacrificed on the altar of quick laughs.

Raconteur and comedian Tom Allen is a wonderfully laconic anecdotalist, and bears an uncanny stage presence to what might be described as the love child of Kenneth Williams and Stephen Fry. FILTER THEATRE AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES

Filter’s irreverant, contemporary recreations of the classics – Caucasian Chalk Circle, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – have gone down a storm in Bristol in the past few years.

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Now for the very first time Filter is developing and premiering a new production in Bristol, co-produced with Tobacco Factory Theatres, before the rest of the world gets to see it.

The improvements we are making to artist development also give us the opportunity to expand the work we do with Children and Young People. We aim to create a programme that is dynamic, accessible, inclusive and high quality and we are soon to hire a new dedicated role of Children and Young People’s Director with a clear long term vision to provide opportunities for children to engage in cultural activities relevant to their needs and interests.

“Work that dazzles the eye, enchants the ear, and stimulates both the mind and heart” The Daily Telegraph on Filter “For newcomers to Shakespeare, I can’t think of a better introduction...it’s a celebration: mad, wild, loving and hilarious” Sunday Times on Twelfth Night “Fresh, energetic and intelligent, it acknowledges the demands of epic theatre while remaining gleefully irreverent and bracingly modern” The Times on Caucasian Chalk Circle “Miraculously captures the madness at the heart of Shakespeare” The Guardian on A Midsummer Night’s Dream

GIVING BACK

“Filter is a company blessed with wit, style and a touch of magic” Daily Telegraph

Every season we aim to give one night of our programme free of charge to a local charity for fundraising or other purposes. Last season, MusicSpace benefited from this initiative, throwing their annual fundraiser in the Factory Theatre. We also donated over 400 complimentary tickets to events last year to community groups and charities, a value of £5000.

TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES AND TRAVELLING LIGHT

Some dogs look like their owners, or is it that some owners look like their dogs? And who really owns who – do dogs secretly think that we’re their pets?

OPERA PROJECT AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES

Puccini’s hauntingly beautiful Madame Butterfly captures the imagination and enters the soul like no other opera.

Mr and Mrs Dearly love dogs, especially their two dalmatians, Pongo and Missus. Cruella De Vil loves fur and doesn’t have much time for anything living. When Pongo and Missus’s fifteen new-born dalmatian puppies go missing it doesn’t take a genius to work out who has kidnapped them – and now the clock is ticking before they’re gone forever.

Sung here in English, with a new orchestration for 13 players and with the brilliant young British soprano Katie Bird in the title role, we’re delighted to be co-producing the first Madame Butterfly in our Factory Theatre with one of the UK’s leading touring opera companies. Opera Project’s productions here over the last 12 years have kept getting better – we know this Butterfly won’t disappoint. Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha girl, has fallen for Pinkerton, a suave America naval officer. Giving up all she has, she marries him, only for Pinkerton to then abandon her. Left alone for three years bringing up their son, she patiently waits. But when her husband finally returns, her hopes for their future together are cruelly dashed. One of the most popular and best-loved operas in the repertoire, in Madame Butterfly Puccini took a seemingly simple story and, with his unique lyricism, expressive richness and taut sense of drama, created an undisputed masterpiece that punches an emotional impact of extraordinary power rarely experienced in the theatre.

Tobacco Factory Theatres has always been somewhere artists like to spend time developing and trying out ideas; we’ve always been somewhere audiences like to come to see amazing new shows; and, in the last year or so, we’ve started to produce and co-produce our own excellent work on a more regular basis. From now on, we will make the relationship between these activities stronger and clearer through a dynamic and accessible Artist Development programme that’s committed to identifying and nurturing talent and making great ideas go places. For more information, contact Carrie Rhys-Davies, Artist Development Producer, on carrie@tobaccofactorytheatres.com or 0117 963 0948

ASSOCIATE ARTISTS Over 2014 – 15 we’re going to work with five extraordinary artists/companies, who will spend time developing new shows at Tobacco Factory Theatres. We are delighted to announce that two of these will be the awesome Filter Theatre and the brilliant Jennifer Bell Company. We’re now looking for three more remarkable south west-based artists who’d like to go on a journey with us. Supporting us to deliver this is the mighty triumvirate of Bristol-based producers MAYK, Theatre Bristol, and London’s New Diorama Theatre, who will each work alongside us with one of the three selected artists.

To help you do this we can offer space, sharing opportunities, support applying for funding and a cash bursary. And we can offer you our full backing: we’re in this together. For full details visit tobaccofactorytheatres.com/plus or email carrie@tobaccofactorytheatres.com Deadline for applications: Mon 07 April 9am Working with us to deliver our Associate Artists programme:

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT

MORE INFO: WWW.TOBACCOFACTORYTHEATRES.COM/PLUS

WHAT’S HAPPENED TO TF+? TF+ was our name for everything that happens at Tobacco Factory Theatres that isn’t sitting in the dark watching a show. And it served us well, embracing everything from our work with young people and events for audiences to artist development. But now we’re saying a fond farewell to the name TF+, as we expand our activity in these areas and look to the future with excitement. You’ve read all about Artist Development above; there are also big plans afoot for children, young people and audiences. It’s a transitional time, so please bear with us, and for the moment tobaccofactorytheatres.com/plus is still the place to find out about these sorts of things. Watch this space! SUPPORT US

“TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES WORKS WONDERS WITH LITTLE MONEY; WITH MORE INVESTMENT IT WOULD PERFORM MIRACLES” SUSANNAH CLAPP, THE OBSERVER & BBC RADIO 3

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS We are grateful for the generous support of our Business Club, our Friends, Champions, Patrons, and Benefactors, and we remain indebted to our Fans For Life whose support was instrumental in the early years of the theatre.

BUSINESS CLUB ASHGROVE PHARMACY

In the last year Tobacco Factory Theatres welcomed over 110,000 people to 645 performances, classes, talks, workshops and other events both in our venues and around the city. To do this costs about £1.8m a year and we are proud to earn 85% of our income, with 66% coming directly from ticket sales. However, as a registered charity, we could not do the work we do without the generous support of grant making trusts, our business partners and our members. Our vision is to bring world class directors, actors, and musicians to Tobacco Factory Theatres as well as to invest in developing incredible local talent; keeping the brightest young directors and playwrights in Bristol and supporting their growth into the next great generation, alongside an expansion of our outreach work into the communities of South Bristol to provide enrichment and opportunities for young people.
