Welcome
We’ve come a long way from humble beginnings but this season feels like the dawn of a new age for the Tobacco Factory Theatre. We’re taking a big physical step by installing new seating in the Factory Theatre (P37), and thank you to all those trusts, companies and individuals that are helping us with this. We’re spreading our wings and producing and co-producing all over the country (P04). We’re training and developing more theatre artists than ever before, and providing more ways for audiences to get closer to what we do (P38 & 39). Most of all though we’re producing and presenting the best season ever in our two wonderful theatres. I’m particularly looking forward to the brilliant Bristol Festival of Puppetry (P05), hosting the tour of the startling debut play Fog (P11), the world premiere of Mark Bruce’s Dracula (P13) and the first visit of Out of Joint to our theatre (P21) but there genuinely are too many highlights to pick out. We do hope to see you down here.

TWELFTH NIGHT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
JASON ROBERT BROWN
Created by Filter Directed by Sean Holmes Music & Sound Design by Tom Haines & Ross Hughes
Directed by Martin Berry Designed by Georgia De Grey
In this enormously funny, fast-paced production of Shakespeare’s comedy, dynamic narrative, witty invention and bursts of music result in a joyous celebration. Olivia’s melancholic, puritanical household clashes head on with Sir Toby’s insatiable appetite for drunken debauchery. Orsino’s relentless pursuit of Olivia and Malvolio’s extraordinary transformation typify the madness of love in Illyria: land of make-believe and illusion.
Jason Robert Brown’s cult musical theatre classic, a story of love made and love lost, bursts into the Brewery Theatre this Autumn. Telling the beautiful and sweeping story of the life and death of a five year relationship between two American twenty-somethings, The Last Five Years has become a classic of modern musicals and is ideally suited to the intimate setting of the Brewery Theatre. Cathy is an aspiring actress and Jamie a successful young novelist. Their story is often painfully familiar and at times surprising, revealing what it is to love without shame and to dare to dream of a life lived with another.
This is one of the freshest Shakespeare productions of recent years. “A company blessed with wit, style and a touch of magic...” **** The Daily Telegraph

The Fringe First hit of 2012 from award-winning writer Chris Goode. When you’re a child you don’t really think…cos you like to live like a child. Doesn’t really seem you’re just going to be an adult. Like time flies by and you just want...to, like, stay as a child, but you just enjoy things, the way it goes. Award-winning writer Chris Goode asked forty 8 to 10 year olds to talk about their lives. About being scared, getting lost, being brave, growing up. About the adult world that surrounds and awaits them. About family and faith and their favourite sweets. In Monkey Bars, their words are spoken by adults – playing adults in adult situations. Monkey Bars

Fog exploded onto the London theatre scene in 2012, and proclaimed a brand new and exciting voice in theatre. The reviews were extraordinary but what made our team really take notice was the most impassioned letter we had received from an audience member in 30 years of programming, saying how vital it would be to programme this show. Gary and Lou were put into care as young children by their soldier father, Cannon, following the untimely death of their mother. Ten years later, Cannon returns, expecting to reassemble his family around him. But he feels a stranger in this ‘new’ England of broken promises. And nothing could prepare him for the damage that abandonment and an inadequate care system has wreaked on his kids. He desperately tries to repair what has been broken, but is it all too little too late? Fog is a unique collaboration between a male actor in his 20’s and an established female writer and performer in her 60s, bring together passion, drive and experience. Fog is directed by the multi award-winning Ché Walker (Been So Long, Royal Court/Young Vic and The Frontline, The Globe). First performed at the Finborough Theatre, London in 2012.

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE JUSTJONES&
Adapted from Henrik Ibsen by Rebecca Manson Jones
A contemporary adaptation of Ibsen’s classic, where the audience decides the outcome. Ibsen’s original story is transported to Cornwall to the heart of a close-knit community. Dr Stockmann and her brother, the Mayor, have founded a Co-Operative Health Spa and their town’s fortunes are transformed. So when she discovers that the health of the planet is threatened by one of their business deals, she assumes everyone will want to put things right. It’s a no brainer right? Wrong. Sister and brother discover that they are bound by blood and divided by philosophy. Family loyalty, fairness and trust can no longer be taken for granted. An Enemy of the People places a global dilemma smack bang in the middle of a modern family. At the public meeting, where the cast will be joined by our chorus of local people, whose voices will be heard? The audience will be asked to vote and then the cast will perform the chosen ending. What will you decide? JustJones& is an artist-led theatre company making work from ideas which they say just won’t leave them alone. This production is the first UK-recipient of a prestigious Norwegian Ibsen Scholarship, for its innovative approach to staging Ibsen. “An impressive début” The Stage on A Doll’s House “Thrilling, engaging, vibrant theatre” Western Morning Herald

Step into an upside-down world where familiar things are made strange, with enchanting and horrifying results. Alice in Wonderland is about crossing the threshold between childhood and adulthood, and about the behaviour of one generation seen through the eyes of another. It is about things not being as they should be. Volcano’s “brave, stupid and beautiful” brand of theatre is an intriguing match for Lewis Carroll’s exquisitely deranged tale of childhood, misunderstanding and adventure. Mozart’s
THE MAGIC FLUTE
opera project
Mozart’s fantastical opera blends fairy tale adventure and playful comedy to tell a tale of magic, power and love, with music as enchanting and spectacular as the plot is mysterious. Tamino’s quest to rescue the beautiful Pamina for the powerful Queen of the Night is transformed into a search for Wisdom, Virtue and Truth. He is accompanied on his journey by the Queen’s official bird catcher, Papageno, and under the protection of the Magic Flute. But when he enters the great Temple of Sarastro, his heroic rescue mission takes a new turn, as the devious Queen’s true colours are revealed. Papageno, on the other hand, desires the simpler things in life – fine wine, good food and a lovely looking chick to share it with... A true testament to Mozart’s genius, The Magic Flute is packed with some of the composer’s most recognisable music. From the infamous and stratospherically acrobatic Queen of the Night arias, to heartfelt duets and comic exchanges, Mozart’s magnificent opera is simultaneously comical and genuinely moving. Celebrating 20 years as a company, Opera Project return to the Tobacco Factory Theatre following 2012’s acclaimed production of Eugene Onegin. A strong ensemble cast featuring faces both familiar and new, will sing in English with a live orchestra. “I left the theatre reeling from the experience...a remarkably strong cast” The Guardian (on Eugene Onegin) “This is a production which uses the bare minimum in staging, performers and even space, to tell a story with huge emotional impact – and pulls it off with apparent ease. A treat” BBC Music Magazine (on Eugene Onegin) Running time approx. 2hrs 50mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 7+

NORTH, NORTH, NORTH NEW INTERNATIONAL ENCOUNTER
NIE invite you to join them on an exhilarating journey into a little known story from one of the world’s last areas of great wilderness. The magnificent, award-winning New International Encounter, with whom we collaborated on 2012’s Hansel and Gretel, crash land into the Brewery Theatre this Autumn with their new show for adults.
North North North
In July 1897, three Swedish adventurers set out from Svalbard, headed for the North Pole in a hydrogen filled balloon. Their aim was to discover new lands, to map the undiscovered Arctic and to plant the flag of Sweden at the pole. At 2:30pm on the 11th July they cut the anchor lines and floated up into the cold arctic air. They were never seen alive again... Using an international cast and a delightful mix of projection, physical theatre, storytelling and live music, NIE invite you to join them on an exhilarating journey. UP DOWN BOY
MYRTLE THEATRE COMPANY IN ASSOCIATION WITH SALISBURY PLAYHOUSE Written by Sue Shields
Up Down Boy returns to the Brewery Theatre following sell-out performances and critical acclaim when it showed in our Brewery and Factory Theatres in 2010. Matty is off to college in an hour – and he’s left it to Mum to pack his case. She won’t miss the slamming doors, the queue for the bathroom and the phone bills. But Matty is no ordinary teenager – and will his mother cope without him? This honest, touching and uplifting play and was inspired by the extraordinary life story of a boy with Down’s syndrome and his mother’s humorous perspective on bringing him up. Bristol-based Myrtle Theatre (City of One, Hot Air) produce inspiring and thought provoking work. Up Down Boy combines drama, music, dance and animation to tell an incredibly moving story that will touch anyone that sees it. This current UK tour includes performances in The Shed – The National Theatre’s new performance space. “The whole production makes for an emotional but never sentimental picture of an unusual but strangely familiar relationship. A truly entertaining and uplifting story” The Post “An inspired piece of theatre. Poignant and deeply moving, yet full of hope and celebration” Audience member “It is rare that a piece of theatre moves, amuses and challenges in equal measure. Myrtle Theatre manages all three in a seemingly effortless blend of stark realism, modern myth and musical theatre” Guardian.co.uk (on City of One) Running time 1hr Age recommendation adults and children 12+

CIPHERS
OUT OF JOINT, BUSH THEATRE & EXETER NORTHCOTT THEATRE Written by Dawn King Directed by Blanche McIntyre
Touring to Bristol for the first time in a decade, internationally acclaimed touring company, Out of Joint present the new thriller – Ciphers. Most of what she told me about herself is a cover story. She is a British Intelligence Officer. How far would she go to get information out of me? The answer is, quite far. A young woman is found dead. Her sister sets out to find out what happened, and stumbles into a world of secrets and subterfuge that makes her question who Justine really was. How well can you ever know someone who lies for a living? Dawn King’s debut play Foxfinder received rave reviews. Now, in Ciphers, she has written a smart and provocative thriller about spies, double agents, and the opaqueness of the human soul. Blanche McIntyre previously directed the much-lauded world première of Foxfinder and she was named Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics’ Circle Awards 2012. Out of Joint is the internationally acclaimed touring company founded and directed by Max Stafford-Clark. It has premièred plays by many brilliant writers including Caryl Churchill, David Hare and Mark Ravenhill. “Thrillingly original” Time Out on Foxfinder “A contender for new play of the year” The Guardian on Foxfinder “With its twists and turns and its dark secrets, this is a play that thrills” The Daily Telegraph on Foxfinder “Rising directorial star” Time Out on Blanche McIntyre Running time 2hrs (inc. interval) Age recommendation 14+

THE SHOP OF TORO! TORO! LITTLE HORRORS MICHAEL MORPURGO PICKLED IMAGE
A dark and twisted show with a wicked sense of humour. Grimlake’s Emporium of Novelties: a dilapidated shop on the outskirts of Nowhere, where strange puppets collect dust and cobwebs… Albert Grimlake, proprietor, is a man obsessed with puppets, particularly ventriloquist dummies – each face lovingly crafted by his own hand, and bearing an uncanny resemblance to customers, friends and family long gone. But Albert is growing old and knows he won’t last forever. He has no son, no successor. Time is running out to find someone to keep the Emporium open, someone to breathe life into his creations…
The Shop of LIttle Horrors
Enter Eric. He’s young, he’s eager, and he’s seen all the Muppet movies, ever. He’s the perfect applicant: keener than mustard and easily moulded. But Eric discovers there’s so much to learn. How do you scream without moving your lips? Using extraordinary puppets, masks and props, Pickled Image has created a show to rival their sell out international successes, Houdini’s Suitcase, Hunger and Late Night Wolf Tales. P.S. This show contains no carnivorous plants. Developed in association with The North Wall, Oxford.

POONAMALLEE PRODUCTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH EXETER NORTHCOTT THEATRE Adapted by Simon Reade Directed & designed by Philip Wilson Performed by Gary Turner
From the creators of Private Peaceful and the author of War Horse. Antonito’s idyllic life on his parents’ bull-rearing farm in Spain is shattered when he realises that his favourite bull-calf, brave Paco, is destined to fight in the bullring. Taking both their destinies into his own hands, and risking the lives and love of his family, Antonito hatches a daring plan. But it will take enormous courage – because this is 1936, and the drums of civil war are echoing across the Spanish plains. Originally produced by Salisbury Playhouse and nominated for the TMA Award for Best Show for Young People, this stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s Toro! Toro! captures the passion and drama of rapidly growing up in the heat of war. “A tale of another country and another time that resonates with the here and now...Once again Morpurgo demonstrates his talent for stories of absolute clarity about big events” The Sunday Times on Morpurgo’s Toro Toro “Excellent...Gary Turner does a splendid job …Reade and Wilson stay true to the author’s intention with the accent on powerful storytelling” The Stage Running time 1hr 15mins Age recommendation 8+ Joe Roberts Marketing Assistant, TFT

THE FITZROVIA RADIO HOUR
AN INSTINCT FOR KINDNESS
Recreating the unique spirit of 1940’s radio plays and brilliantly evoking a dinner-jacketed age of casual imperialism and stiff upper lips.
Written and performed by Chris Larner Directed by Hannah Eidinow
SEABRIGHT PRODUCTIONS LTD
The Fitzrovia Radio Hour’s brand new show tours fresh from three critically acclaimed London residencies, and two sell-out years at the Edinburgh Fringe. Performed with cut-glass theatricality blending homage and satire, Fitzrovia mixes the chauvinist attitudes of 1940s Britain with sharp contemporary humour to produce a heady comic cocktail. Throughout the plays, sound effects are created live: a Bakelite hairdryer imitates a heating torch, a desk fan becomes an aeroplane, and multiple types of cabbage help to stage a fight scene. In 2010 Chris Larner accompanied his chronically ill ex-wife to Switzerland’s Dignitas clinic. He came home with an empty wheelchair and a story to tell. This moving, bittersweet show reflects on the circumstances, morality and humanity surrounding the journey. Through a candid, poignant and sometimes comic performance, Chris explores both the profound personal implications and the wider ethical issues that surround the contentious topic of assisted suicide. An Instinct for Kindness won critical acclaim and a Fringe First Award at its première at the Pleasance, Edinburgh in 2011 before embarking on a UK tour and a season in London’s West End in 2012. An exceptionally moving and thought-provoking performance. “‘Fantastic. A show that reminds us that how we die is as important as how we live” **** The Guardian “A wonderfully subtle and deceptively understated performance. This is story-telling of a very high order” **** The Times “Intensely moving. THE EYE OF THE HARE
EACH OF US
Written and performed by Pip Heywood Artistic Team Lucy Heywood, Barney Heywood and Naomi Said Music by Miranda Rutter
A solo comedy about love, friendship and human connection at uncertain times, crafted by Ben Moor, one of the Edinburgh Fringe’s most lauded comedy writing talents.
Stand + Stare
Personal archives, paintings and poetry are cut and spliced together live on stage in this multi-layered story. Pip Heywood has worked as a documentary film editor for over 30 years. With this autobiographical piece, he applies that craft to live performance. He explores the threads of continuity in his family, a serious accident, and the act of storytelling itself. By juxtaposing broad themes like his love of landscape with intimate details such as the feel of his mum’s old dress, Pip weaves together a story that relates to all of us. The Eye of the Hare
Working with a 16mm film editor’s pic-synch and a live camera feed projected on stage, he guides the audience through the processes of editing. As he cuts and splices, the story of his life unfolds. We’re delighted to welcome Stand + Stare to the Brewery Theatre, having supported the development of this show from its first iteration at Prototype in March 2012 through a work-in-progress showing at TFT last autumn to Ferment at Bristol Old Vic this summer.
SHOW AND TELL
Written & performed by Ben Moor Directed by Erica Whyman
Funny and romantic, cryptic and surreal, poetic and uplifting. In a chaotic world, populated by self-conscious bees, time-travelling ghosts and corporate thwarts, a complicit businessman creates a social catastrophe of his own life. Whichever way the story goes, in life, each of us has a part to play. Ben Moor is the star of Radio 4’s Coelacanth and Undone. He’s also a Herald Angel Award winner and a Stage Best Actor Award nominee. “Irreverent, inventive and hauntingly beautiful” **** The Guardian, on Ben Moor’s Not Everything Is Significant “Suspenseful, thought-provoking and beautifully performed” **** The Observer, on Moor’s Coelacanth “Bewilderingly brilliant” **** Metro, on Moor’s Not Everything Is Significant

TOM STOPPARD
Expelled from the city, Rosalind and Orlando search for each other in the Arcadian wilderness of the Forest of Arden. But when they meet will they find true love, or just lose themselves? Both funny and moving, this is Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the meaning of love, of its madness and transcendence.
Crossing the centuries – and the changing notions of the Arcadian dream – at Sidley Park in Derbyshire are mysteries of history, sex, chaos theory and Newtonian equations; and an accusation of murder against Lord Byron. Challenging, intriguing and witty – but also heartfelt – this is Tom Stoppard’s greatest masterpiece.

New ideas for shows + an audience = Prototype This year Prototype celebrated 5 years of supporting Bristol’s artists to develop the shows of tomorrow. How does it do that? Well it’s very simple: at each event a handful of local theatre companies present 10 minutes of a very early-stage new idea to see if it’s got legs. And how do they know if it’s got legs? Well they ask you, the audience. To date, there have been 18 Prototype events, over 70 different artists/companies have presented work and 28 of those ideas have made it to full production, so it seems to be working. Fresh, fast and fun, Prototype is an exhilarating night out that’s got its finger on the pulse of theatre-making today. Come along and take part in the dialogue that helps artists make the best work they can.
Prototype in action! Stand + Stare’s The Eye of the Hare began life at Prototype over a year ago. See the finished show here at the Brewery Theatre this November (P27).
Over the last year or so we’ve been very lucky to welcome some amazing internationally recognised artists to the TFT to share their practice with Bristol theatre-makers. Punchdrunk, Complicite, Kneehigh and Gecko are amongst the companies who’ve inspired local practitioners through workshops and masterclasses designed to develop skills and understanding and create an on-going dialogue around how work is made. We’re proud of these opportunities and will continue to offer them. If you’d like to be kept updated, contact carrie@tobaccofactorytheatre.com to be added to our emailing list.
Train with Travelling Light in 2014 In the meantime, we’re also developing longer training opportunities with partner organisations. Next year we will be running a 3-day course for directors, designers, performers and musicians with the brilliant Bristol-based Travelling Light Theatre Company. Renowned for the clarity, heart and inventiveness of their storytelling, over this mini-residency Travelling Light will share their practice around ensemble devising from an existing story. There will be an application process for places and full details will be announced later in the year. If you’d like to be kept informed, please contact carrie@tobaccofactorytheatre.com.
