CELEBRITY NAMES by Sarah Bates
Celebrity stage names aren’t uncommon. We could all guess that Mr. T isn’t the name his mama gave him - but can you guess these famous folks? • Frederic Austerlitz, Jr. was born on May 10, 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska. He ranks #5 on the 50 Greatest Screen Legends list by the American Film Institute. He is buried in the same cemetery as long time costar Ginger Rogers. That’s right - it’s Fred Astaire. • John Sanford pulled his comedic inspiration from real life. His most famous character, Fred Sanford, was named after his brother. Redd Foxx got his nickname because of his reddish hair and complexion. • Her “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress was auctioned for $1,267,500 – the most expensive piece of clothing ever sold. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, she was baptized Baker but remains forever Marilyn Monroe. • William Bruce Rose, Jr.’s mother changed his name to William Bailey when she remarried, but he legally changed his name to W. Axl Rose in 1986 and has the moniker tattooed on his arm. • Ralph Reuben Lifshitz was born in the Bronx, the son of immigrant Jews from Eastern Europe. Do you think Ralph Lifshitz would have sold as well as Ralph Lauren? turn the page for more!

“Green” Tips Can Save Money, Too Q: I read your column a couple weeks back about starting an “eco-friendly” home. I have some more tips for your readers that are easy to follow and can save money too: • For the refrigerator, in addition to keeping the coils underneath or in the back clean, also clean the rubber seals around the inside of the door so it closes tightly. • Move the refrigerator a few inches away from the wall so air circulates around the condenser. • When cooking on an electric stove, just before something is completely cooked, turn off the burner and let the residual heat do the work. • Don’t keep opening the oven door to check on something that’s cooking, as you’ll release heat into the kitchen, making your air conditioner work harder. It also changes the temperature inside the oven, which means cooking results may be unpredictable. • If you have a dishwasher, only run it when it’s full to save water and energy. Use the air-dry rather than heat-dry setting. Also, don’t pre-rinse dishes; just scrape them well. • And of course, keep all your appliances clean. They will work more ef-
ficiently and last longer, too. I hope these tips will help your readers. -- Dale in San Diego

A: These are great tips! Many of these are things that most of us already do, and we can quickly adjust to add other techniques such as scraping instead of rinsing. Cleaning the refrigerator seals (and the dishwasher seal while you’re at it) should be done with a mild soap and water solution; scrubbing could damage the seals. So, if you have a stubborn bit of gunk on the seal, soak it with the soapy water for a few minutes and try cleaning it again. HOME TIP: Make a kitchen compost pail using an old coffee can with a couple of holes punched in the plastic lid. Empty the pail into a large backyard composter, daily if possible.

• Reginald Kenneth Dwight was recently honored with a flavor of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream named after one of his songs. “Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road” was released in 2008 with all proceeds benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation. • Farrokh Bulsara, a native of Zanzibar, was attending St. Peter’s boarding school near Bombay that he started going by the name Freddie. His family fled their home during the Zanzibar Revolution and settled in London, where he studied design and joined a few bands. At twenty-three he became part of a band with Brian May. Freddie picked the name Queen for the band and tacked on his new last name of Mercury. • Bernard Schwartz was born June 3, 1925. He has appeared in over one hundred films since 1949. Married five times, it was his first marriage to actress Janet Leigh that produced daughter Jamie Lee Curtis. You might recognize Bernard better by his stage name Tony Curtis. • Dino Crocetti only spoke Italian until he was five and by the 10th grade he had dropped out of school. By his twenties he was going by Dino Martini after Opera tenor Nino Martini, but he later shortened it to Dean Martin. • Stevland Judkins, although born blind, was a gifted musician from an early age. He signed with Motown Records at eleven as “Little Stevie Wonder” after a producer had called him a “boy wonder.”
• Paul David Hewson’s friends gave him the nickname Bonavox after a local hearing aid store (they said he sang loud enough for the hard of hearing to hear him.) He kept the name when he realized the word was Latin for “good voice”, but these days he just goes by Bono. • Maurice Joseph Mickelwhite Jr. was acting as Michael Scott when he started out, but while on the phone with his agent, he was forced to make a change when they realized the name was already in use. Looking down the street, Michael saw The Caine Mutiny was playing and decided on Michael Caine. He later joked that had he looked in the other direction, he’d have been “Michael A Hundred and One Dalmatians.” • Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. got his first guitar from his maternal grandmother at age seven. It was a good start for legendary musician John Denver. • Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong was born on Christmas Day, 1971. She once commented that it was cruel to name a child one thing and call them another, as her parents had called her Dido since childhood. • Marion Robert Morrison’s parents changed his middle name to Michael when they decided to name their second son Robert. A local fireman was the one who started calling Marion “Little Duke” after he noted that Marion never went anywhere without his large dog Duke. He was credited once as Duke Morrison, but “The Duke” settled on the stage name John Wayne.

Present the idea as you guys partnering with each other to help out, and be sure you don’t get into any finger-wagging, or lectures about responsibility. CELEBRITY NAMES (continued): • Vivian Mary Hartley was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal. She kept part of her name as her stage name and took on Leigh when she married Herbert Leigh Holman. After her divorce from second husband, Sir Laurence Olivier, she was officially titled Vivien Leigh, Lady Olivier. • Caryn Elaine Johnson adopted the stage name Whoopi, yes, after a whoopee cushion and Goldberg after some of her European ancestors. A DNA test showed she is 92% sub-Saharan African and 8% European. • John Charles Carter was born in No Man’s Land, an unincorporated area in Illinois between Evanston and Wilmette. His mother remarried Chester Heston and he would later take his stage name from his mother’s maiden name, Charlton, and his stepfather’s last name. • David Robert Jones is well known for his music and his ever-changing look. He has a particularly unique set of eyes, one pupil significantly larger than the other. He was injured after a friend punched him in the eye while wearing a ring. After several surgeries and nearly losing his vision in that eye, David, better known by the last name Bowie, was left with one pupil permanently dilated. • Georgios Kyriacos Panayiptou was born to a Greek father and English mother in North London. He is a former member of the band Wham! George Michael and Elton John divided all the proceeds from their single “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” between ten charities that benefited children, AIDS and education. • Ramón Gerardo Antonio Estévez took the stage name Martin Sheen, the last name after Catholic archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. He was the 2008 recipient of the Laetare Medal from Notre Dame, an annual award given for outstanding service to the Roman Catholic Church and society. • Robert Allen Zimmerman legally changed his name to his current moniker in 1962. He’s a vegetarian and has an honorary doctorate from Princeton University. His song “Like a Rolling Stone” is Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 Greatest Song of All Time and he won an Academy Award for his song “Things Have Changed.” Robert Zimmerman’s a nice name, but music wouldn’t be the same without Bob Dylan. Dear Dave, A couple of years ago my parents got into a big financial mess. They filed bankruptcy, and had to give up their house. Now, they lived on a fixed income of $2,220 a month, and my dad is not in good health. My wife and I help them out with a little money each month, but my sister and her husband don’t do much for them. Do you think I should lean on her a little bit in an effort to make her pitch in and help? Randy Dear Randy, If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that you can’t make another adult behave. The only person you can control is the one you look at in mirror every morning. Now, should a son or daughter want to help their parents, especially if one is in poor health, and the money’s tight? Absolutely! But family relationships are strange animals. Your sister and her husband may have some bruised feelings from something that happened years ago, or they may be having money problems of their own. At this point, all you can do is try to gauge their interest in this idea. For starters, I’d suggest working up a monthly budget on your parents. I’m talking about a simple, one-page document, and show it to your sister and her husband. Let them know that mom
(set aside enough money) Dear Dave, How much money should I have in my business emergency fund? My annual sales are about $100,000, and I currently have a couple of months of general and administrative expenses set aside. Anonymous Dear Anonymous, You’re getting there! I like the idea of a small business having about six months of expenses set aside. Having that kind of cushion provides a ton of options, and lots of peace. It also eliminates the need for borrowing money, because with that kind of cash sitting around, you basically become your own line of credit! Having a personal emergency fund set aside is a little different than having one in place for your business. When it comes to personal finance, I usually recommend setting aside three to six months of expenses. But the basic idea is the same, regardless of whether you’re talking about personal finance or the financial health of your small business. A fully-funded emergency fund can turn a disaster into nothing more than a minor inconvenience! - Dave * For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

On the Right Path: Treating Alzheimer’s I like to follow researchers when they’re working on medical issues that affect seniors. No, I don’t tag along in their labs. But when notable researchers come up with something good, I try to trace back a few years to see what they were doing before. Are they following the money, as in research grants, and changing specialties? Or are they following their heart? Li-Huei Tsai is one to watch, and I have been. Tsai is a professor of Neuroscience at MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. As a child, she witnessed her grandmother’s decline into dementia. That’s a powerful incentive. Now she’s studying Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss. The newest research out of Tsai’s lab indicates that she’s found a drug that can reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, at least in mice. But these are genetically
modified mice, bred to give scientists more of an indication of how the drug can work in humans. The drug they’ve been researching restores long-term memory in mice with Alzheimer’s. (One of the tests used for mice involved swimming through a maze and determining whether the drug helped them remember the path.) The technical lingo talks about circuits and synapses and a gene called histone deacetylase. The bottom line is that the drug restores memory and the ability to learn new tasks. Next step: Determining whether that drug will do the same in humans and lead to the recovery of memory. Treatment is still 10 years away. I hope Tsai keeps following her heart with this research. It seems that she could well be on the right path to finding a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

ID Theft Lawsuit Remember back in May 2006 when a computer holding the personal information of veterans was stolen? Yes, I know -- there have been so many thefts of data that it’s hard to keep them all straight. But this incident was over the top: The computer in question was taken home and then stolen. The names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth for upward of 17 million veterans, spouses and military personnel were on that computer. A class-action lawsuit was filed, and after all this time, it’s about to be settled. Specifically, a fund of $20 million will be created to reimburse those who had out-of-pocket expenses stemming from the theft. The recovery period runs from May 3, 2006 to Feb. 11, 2009. No less than $75 will be paid for any valid claim, up to a cap of $1,500. If your expenses were higher than that, you might want to opt out of the class-action portion so you can file for your actual damages. In that case, you need to file a letter so it is
received by June 29, 2009. See the classaction Web site below for details. If there’s any money left over, the balance will be handed over to two worthy organizations: Fisher House and The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. You have until Nov. 27, 2009, to mail your claim form to VA Settlement Claims, P.O. Box 6727, Portland, OR 97228-9767. Be sure to keep a copy of the claim form, along with your proof of mailing. To download the claim form and to get more information, go to www.veteransclass.com. Read the FAQ and note the particulars on out-of-pocket expenses and actual damages. You also can call 1-888-288-9625. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH by meeting the daily requirements for calcium and by Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Building Strong Bones
HEALTH
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a woman in her mid40s with significant bone loss (osteopenia). I was completely unaware that bone loss can occur in premenopausal women. I was stunned by my poor bone-density score. Why doesn’t the medical community inform the public that bone loss can be an issue for premenopausal women? -- E.M. ANSWER: Osteoporosis happens mainly to women after menopause, when there is a sudden and precipitous drop in their production of estrogen, the female hormone that works to preserve bone health. However, women attain their peak bone strength in their late 20s and early 30s. From that time on, bones begin to lose their calcium and become more fragile and prone to fracture. Osteoporosis can occur at younger ages. You don’t have osteoporosis. You have osteopenia. It’s a marker on the road to osteoporosis. At young ages, girls should be on a program of building a bank deposit of calcium and strong bones
Millwood
vitamin D, and by not doing things that lead to bone demineralization, like smoking. Daily exercise is another requirement for strong bones. The booklet on osteoporosis explains the prevention and treatment of this debilitating disease. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This past winter I lost 50 pounds and am quite proud of myself. Now I have all sorts of ugly stretch marks. I thought I would look stunning on the beach. I probably will look stunning, but not for the reasons I thought I would. Can’t something be done about these things? -C.C. ANSWER: Stretch marks are scars. Your former weight stretched the skin beyond its limits, and the skin tore. Scars formed where the tears occurred. Time is one of the best treatments for them. They lighten up and blend in with the rest of the skin. How long that takes is unpredictable, but it happens.
Retin-A -- an acne medicine -- has been suggested as a treatment for stretch marks. I can’t tell you if it’s successful all the time or how much of the time. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I walk half an hour each morning. Lately, I have experienced chest pain, followed by gas and sometimes heartburn. The same thing happens when I shovel snow. I am 81 and do not take any medicines. I have had all the lung and heart tests without any problems showing up. What do you think this is? -- F.O. ANSWER: When you say “all the tests,” does that include a stress test, the test taken while you walk ever faster on a treadmill and an EKG is constantly taken? If not, you need one. In fact, even if you have had a stress test, go back to the doctor. Undiagnosed chest pain that comes with exertion makes me leery of heart disease. Don’t give up the pursuit of trying to find an answer. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2009 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Audrey is a wonderful kitty! She loves to snuggle up and if you’re sitting down, her favorite place to be is in your lap. Although she is a little older, she is spry and likes to bat around a small ball or chase a toy mouse. But her favorite pass time is spending time with her human. She is declawed on her front paws so no need to worry about your furniture! She dislikes loud noises and car rides and will tell you all about it but once she is home she is quiet and content. Audrey would love to be your kitty companion for life!

zipsdrivein.com PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta What If Cat Eats Poisoned Mouse?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Do you know if rat poisons are harmful to cats that eat a rat or mouse that has died from it? I don’t see any warning on the package. I’m nervous about using it. Thanks. -- Dee in Palmyra, N.Y. DEAR DEE: In my opinion, yes, a cat that eats a rodent that had ingested poison could very well be affected by that poison as well. Some rat poisons work by slowly building up in the rodent’s system through repeated feedings, so that by the time the rodent dies, it has a fairly concentrated buildup of poison in its system. One particular ingredient to watch for is warfarin. This anticoagulant is present in many store-bought rat poisons. It’s effective because it doesn’t have a particular odor or taste, so pests can’t detect it. But it’s certainly dangerous to predators that might eat the pest afterward, particularly those of a lower weight, like cats. If you’re going to use a rat poison to rid an area of these

pests, you must keep pets out of that area. Alternatives to poison include box and snap traps, and preventative measures. Secure the traps to the ground so rodents can’t drag them away. To reduce the risk of rat infestation, it must made difficult or undesirable for the rodents to live in that area. Around houses, prune back shrubs and trees so they do not touch the building. Stack lumber, boxes and other outdoor storage at least 2 feet away from the house, and keep compost piles well away. Remove potential food sources as well: Seal up garbage cans and pet food containers, and remove leftover pet food from dishes and bird feeders. Even these measures might not always be effective. If you’re reluctant to use poisons but an infestation is severe or not abating despite your efforts, contact a professional pest-control service for help.

The Truth About Chiropractic Care Modern day chiropractic started in 1895 along with the development of X-rays and the national football league. That year Harvey Willard, a Davenport Iowa janitor, slipped on some stairs and fell and hit his neck and head on the stairs. D.D. Palmer discovered that Harvey Willard was deaf so he performed the classical chiropractic neck adjustments and Harvey went to the window and could hear the carts going up the Brady Street hill. Over the succeeding months, other patients came to Palmer with every conceivable problem, including flu, sciatica, migraine headaches, stomach complaints, epilepsy and heart trouble. D.D. Palmer found each of these conditions responded well to chiropractic care. In 1895 D.D. Palmer stipulated that every action of the body was controlled through the nervous system, so to have perfect health you need to have a well working nervous system with no nerve interference. D.D. Palmer stated nerve interference came through physical trauma, chemical trauma, and through the thoughts that you think. Physical trauma are the bumps and bruises that we acquire as we go through life. Chemical trauma is acquired through the foods that we eat, the fluids we drink, and the air we breathe. The combination of negative and positive thoughts we think also lead to nerve interference.

A nerve passes between two bones, one on top of the other with the nerve in between. When these bones get twisted, tilted, or slip either frontwards, backwards or sideways, it puts pressure on a nerve and body pains begin. Chiropractic is the art, science, and philosophy of not cracking bones, but removing nerve interference so harmony can return to the body. Chiropractic can be both gentle and effective through the use of massage, Activator Methods, Applied Kinesology, Logan Basic and Thompson techniques.

509-568-1065 Stewart Shows His Chops
CONCORD, N.C. -- The inevitable finally happened. Ever since his rookie season in 1999, the Sprint All-Star Race has seemed ideally suited to the driving style of Tony Stewart. Stewart, the only driver to date who has won championships under both the former system (2002) and the Chase format (2005), finally won Lowe’s Motor Speedway’s all-star event in his 11th try. “There are a lot of races I still haven’t won,” said Stewart, “but it’s a hard race to win. Nobody holds anything back. “This is a special race. You know it’s different. You know it’s going to be more difficult because of that. We always, in the past last 10 years here, were always good on long runs and always good late in the race. This kind of format never fit the package that we had.” Stewart, who turned 38 on May 20, roared to the front in the final segment, passing Matt Kenseth
with less than two laps remaining in the fourth and final segment. This year Stewart became a car owner, acquiring a majority share in what is now Stewart Haas Racing. Eleven races into the season, Stewart is second in the Sprint Cup standings, but he hasn’t won an official race yet. The Sprint All-Star Race isn’t a “points” race. He became only the second driver-owner to win the All-Star Race. The first was Geoff Bodine in 1994. For 10 years, Stewart competed for Joe Gibbs Racing, where he has been succeeded by rookie Joey Logano. This year Stewart hired Ryan Newman as his teammate. After a slow start, Newman has risen to eighth place in the point standings. For all those years at JGR, Stewart had one crew chief, Greg Zipadelli, now paired with Logano. Darian Grubb, formerly at Hendrick Motorsports, now leads Stewart’s team. “They’ll basically have that monkey off their back,” said Grubb of the team after Stewart’s victory. “We don’t want to lose the monkey. We want him to hang out with us.” ***
