This week Tidbits celebrates the working men and women of the world with an article everyone can appreciate. So take a break from the job for a bit, kick back and relax as we share some interesting work related Tidbits. • It can always be worse, right? The next time you think you’re job’s rough, imagine being the cage cleaner at the zoo or an odor tester. Not too sure about just what that last one is? An odor tester is someone who makes sure that deodorant actually works. We’ll try not to think about the actual in-trial testing! • What’s in a name really? Would you ever be a sweat box attendant? It’s not what it sounds like. Sweat Box Attendants wait on guests in the sweat boxes of spas. Although it’s probably a sweat breaking job, the tips are probably great - and if you don’t mind attending to businessmen in towels, it could make a great summer or part-time job! • Do you know any Herpetologists? Or did you grow up wanting to study frogs, but didn’t know what to call it? Well, here’s your answer: herpetology is the study of amphibians. It is a branch of zoology, which is the study of animals. Another branch of zoology is Myrmecology, the study of those little six-legged picnic fiends. Yes, you guessed it - ants. • Surnames were first used in Europe around the 10th or 11th centuries. There are several origins of surnames, but generally they were derived in one of four ways. A name could come from a father, could refer to the place one lived, be a nickname or, as relevant to this article, pertain to a person’s occupation. Such examples are Cooper, a barrel maker, Taylor, Cook, Carpenter, Miller, Smith and Cryer (the town crier.) • Have you ever met a Tonsorial Artist? Does he draw tonsils? Is it some weird form of art, somewhere between Dadaism and Cubism? Do they draw the mythical Tonsor beasts from the Isle of Tonsoria? Nope, this is just a fancy old name for a barber. Tonsor is Latin for barber. • One of the first labor days occurred in 1882 on September 5th. Peter J. MacGuire, a union secretary, organized a parade of 10,000 workers in New York City. It was President Grover Cleveland who signed the bill that made the first Monday in September Labor Day. turn the page for more! WANT TO RUN YOUR OWN BUSINESS? DIAMOND - male lab mix Pet ID 5375701 Diamond has been evaluated with the SAFERTM test, and is suitable for adoption. The evaluators said: “Diamond is a high maintenance, high energy boy! He will need lots of training - he is still very much a puppy and he’s still very mouthy.” Diamond is happy, playful, and exuberant. He’s a sweet, affectionate boy. He’s also intelligent and he knows “sit” but he could use more positive training to achieve a bit more self control. Diamond will need plenty of activity and exercise. He came into the shelter on August 22.

Lonely Guinea Pig Needs New Playmate
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently lost one of my guinea pigs, “Rosie.” Ever since then, my other guinea pig, “Tulip,” has seemed to take it very hard. She stays in her igloo and doesn’t get up a lot. I’d like to get a new guinea pig so she won’t be lonely. Is this a good idea? If I get a young guinea pig, would Tulip act motherly toward it or attack it? -- Elise, via e-mail DEAR ELISE: First, I’m so sorry to hear about Rosie. Guinea pigs tend to do best living in pairs, so I agree with you that Tulip is probably experiencing some depression right now at the loss of her companion. Introducing a new guinea pig may be all right in Tulip’s case. Female cavies accept new companions more readily than males, which generally have to be intro-

duced when they’re both young. I can’t say whether introducing a very young female cavy companion will work better than introducing an adult cavy to Tulip -but adult cavies tend to be very individualistic. Go with your instincts, and observe both guinea pigs closely as they interact. Happy cavies generally make clucking or “wheek” sounds, or purr. Teeth clacking, posturing or yawning can indicate aggressiveness. In any case, make sure Tulip continues to get the nutrients she needs while she adjusts to the loss of Rosie. She must eat daily, so if she hasn’t eaten in 24 hours, contact her veterinarian for guidance -- she may need to be brought in so the vet can introduce nutrients quickly.

LABORING AWAY (continued): • Some famous folks have had the entertainment bug in their genes, acting and singing from a young age. However, like the rest of us, some celebrities first jobs were a little more run of the mill. Actor and comedian Jim Carrey was a security guard for some time before becoming the laughable big screen star we know today. Actor Warren Beatty was once a rat-catcher and Steve Buscemi once proudly served the New York City Fire Department. • Many celebrities were military men - Sean Connery was a Navy man back in Scotland - and even once a milkman. Walt Disney drove an ambulance for the Red Cross during World War I. Diabetes spokesman Wilford Brimley was a body guard for Howard Hughes and also a military man - he served in the Marines. The Bucket List and Batman star Morgan Freeman was a mechanic for the U.S. Air Force. • Stop motion animators produce amazing work, but it’s certainly time consuming. One famous stop motion film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, took over two years to film due to the nature of the craft. The film’s co-writer and producer, Tim Burton, was an animator before moving on to his directorial fame and the film is based on a poem he wrote while animating for Disney in the 1980s. While he’s been said to have disliked the work, just look where it lead! Disney released the film via Touchstone Pictures in 1993. • Ironic, but true, LOST actress Evangeline Lilly was once a flight attendant. • Just what is a wrinkle chaser? Nope, it’s not cosmetic and it has nothing to do with fabric wrinkle removing product. A wrinkle chaser is the person responsible for removing wrinkles from the fabrics of shoes before they leave the factory. Nothing like having a new pair of wrinkle free kicks - and we have wrinkle chasers to thank for that! • Did you know that there are over 7.2 million teachers in the United States? There are also
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3
155.1 million people in the American workforce,. However, only 9% of those workers have been with their current employer twenty years or more. • More Celebrity Jobs: Did you know Mick Jagger was once a porter at a mental health facility? Fellow Brits and rock legends Ozzy Osbourne worked in a slaughterhouse and Rod Stewart was a grave digger. • Before he graced the silver screen, Marlon Brando dug ditches. Funny man Robin Williams was once lauded for his silence - he once worked as a mime. Danny DeVito would have given you a run for your money on the Tonsorial Artist Tidbit- DeVito was a formally trained hair stylist. • What do you get when you search for the “Best Job in the World?” The top hits on Google tell us that one man is being paid over $100,000 to live rent free on an island in Australia and blog about all of his experiences there for six months. But, it’s not just any island, and certainly not a deserted island. The job comes with fantastic accommodations! The job is part of Queenland’s project to boost tourism. Applications were taken until February of this year and the lucky winner, who was chosen out of 34,000 candidates, was Ben Southall from the United Kingdom. Ben basically just explores Queensland and writes about all his experiences and the great things the area has to turn the page for more!

Spinal Cement Not All It’s Cracked Up to Be Years ago, doctors came up with a new technique to fix fractured vertebrae in the spine caused by osteoporosis: They injected medical-grade “cement” into the area, which stabilized the fracture site and relieved pain. It was a good idea. “Percutaneous vertebroplasty” was done on thousands of patients over the years, but only now has there been a study to see if the treatment is effective. Unfortunately, it turns out that the procedure doesn’t work quite as well as planned. Patients were tested at the one-week, one-month, three-month and six-month marks after the procedure. To get good results, a double-blind study was used. Some patients were given a “fake treatment” and only thought they had had the cement injected. Patients were able to get up within a few hours and experience less or even no pain, but the results showed that those who did and did not have the procedure had the same outcome. Those receiving the treatment didn’t get better results than those who didn’t have the treatment, in terms of pain and ability to function. The conclusion was that there’s no real benefit to the treatment -- but there are risks. The risks are fairly serious, especially since the procedure doesn’t appear to work any better than other treatments. The “cement” can leak, which means it likely can migrate elsewhere in the body. There is risk of infection. And worse, there’s a possible risk of more fractures because the cement stabilized the fracture in the position it was already in. Now being tested is a “balloon” that is injected between the vertebrae, which will allow the space between vertebrae to be put back in its original position before the “cement” is injected. This will hopefully take care of the risk of additional fractures at the same site.

LABORING AWAY (continued): offer. Ben started “work” on July 1, 2009. You can learn more about Ben and Queensland at his blog www.islandreefblog.com. • Millions of people have a commute of over ninety minutes each day, but if you think that is bad, try this: one California man drove 377 miles (606.7 kilometers) round trip to his San Jose job with the company Cisco - that’s 1,550 miles (2,494 km) each week! He’s made the drive every day since taking the job in 1989. In 2006, he won $10,000 as the winner of Midas Inc.’s “America’s Longest Commute.” • Here are a few last celebrity jobs to tickle your taste buds. Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson are both former Burger King Employees. Actor Jason Lee preferred Taco Bell for his work endeavors. Lucille Ball sold ice cream. • Both Eddie Vedder and Michael Douglas were gas station attendants. • There are dirty, painstaking, messy, well-paying and odd-named jobs everywhere you look. This Labor Day, remember the guy who cleans the machine that packages your oatmeal or the odor tester who made sure your deodorant stands up to the test. The End
The newest version of the veterans’ education program, called the Post-9/11 GI Bill, is now up and running. The package of benefits is better than ever. If you’ve thought about going back to school or getting training, this could be the time. To qualify, a veteran must have at least 90 days of service on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and an honorable discharge. Those with service-connected disabilities only need 30 days of service. The percentage of benefits you receive depends on the time you served after that date. Three years gets you the maximum benefit. The new program covers: • Tuition and school fees paid directly to the school (the amount is capped at the level of maximum instate tuition). • Up to $1,000 for books. • A housing allowance with the amount dependent on the cost of living where you live. Not all training is covered under the new program. For example, flight training and entrepreneurship training are not covered unless they’re being given at one of the authorized Institutions of Higher Learning. Your first stop should be the Department of Veterans Affairs site: http://www.gibill.va.gov. There you’ll find links to a list of the in-state maximum tuition and fees by states, the housing allowance by ZIP code, as well as a page of benefit comparisons between the new Post-9/11 program and the old Montgomery program, which is still operating. Your most difficult decision might be which program to go with -- Post-9/11 or Montgomery. With the latter, you’d receive a set monthly payment that has nothing to do with your actual expenses. Take pencil and paper to the numbers and see which works best for you. Once you decide, it’s never too early to apply and get the paperwork started. You can apply online or have the forms sent to you by calling 1-888-GI BILL-1 (1888-442-4551). Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hornaday Is a Cut Above Is Ron Hornaday Jr. the greatest driver in the history of what is now the Camping World Truck Series? According to a wide range of observers, there isn’t much doubt. Hornaday’s latest accomplishment -- a record five consecutive victories -- is only a small part of what the 51-year-old native of Palmdale, Calif., has achieved since the Truck Series began in 1995. He has competed regularly in all but five seasons (2000-04) and to date has won a record 45 races, far outdistancing Jack Sprague (28) and Mike Skinner (26). To quantify the significance of the five consecutive victories, one should note that no one has won more than four in a row at the Sprint Cup level since Richard Petty’s 10 consecutive victories in 1967. Said former Truck Series regular Joe Ruttman: “There’s no question, performance-wise from start to finish, Hornaday is head and shoulders ahead of everyone else. ... When you look at the Truck Series in its entirety, you’re looking at two guys (Skinner and Hornaday). They’re both great guys and have been a real key to the success of Truck racing. NASCAR is fortunate to have two great champions in the series still ‘duking’ it out after all these years.” Skinner, still a series regular, joked: “We need to break Hornaday’s arms and legs, and maybe (crew chief) Rick Ren’s, too, to slow them down a little now. That’s about the only way to slow that team down. Right now, they’re like a steamroller and are definitely in a class by themselves.

“It’s embarrassing because they’re just playing with the rest of the field. They just get out there and ride around, and when it’s time to go, they go.” “Hornaday’s driving style fits the Truck Series perfectly because he’s a hard-charging, tough competitor,” said driver Terry Cook, “and every lap he runs, he races like it’s the last lap.” The most modest assessment of Hornaday’s ability and career came from, well, Hornaday himself. “It’s been a great ride for me,” he said. Hornaday’s reputation -- tough, but fair -- fits the Truck Series’ image. “If you rough a guy up, he’ll get you back,” he said. “All these things take place. The driver makes the decision on how badly he wants to win it. If you cross the line, there will be payback. That’s just part of it.” *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.)
