THE 4TH OF JULY by Sarah Bates
Oh say can you see? It’s America’s 233rd birthday this week! And to celebrate, we bring you some patriotic American Tidbits! • Thirty-one places in the United States have the word liberty in their name. There are also just as many with the word eagle in them. • Here’s one for our conspiracy theorists: there is writing on the back of the Declaration of Independence but it’s not invisible. The writing reads “Original Declaration of Independence” and is dated “4th July 1776.” The same is repeated again, upside down, on the bottom of the document. • Constitution Day is celebrated on September 17th, when the United States Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787. The holiday was established in 2004. • Betsy Ross was the 8th of 17 children. • Nearly all the signers of the Constitution had political experience in either colonial or state government. • The 1812 Overture is a popular song to play for 4th of July fireworks finales. Troubleshooting Faulty Porch Light Q: I have an outdoor light just above my back entrance that for a long time had a broken socket. Two weeks ago I completely replaced the fixture with a nice brass and glass one from the home-improvement store. The light came on fine at first, but the next day it didn’t work. I replaced the bulb, checked the wires to make sure they’re hooked up, but no dice. Any ideas? -- Jack M., Buffalo, N.Y. A: First, start with the obvious -- check the fuse box to make sure the circuit is closed. If the circuit is broken, or if after you close it the circuit breaks again, some electrical fault is occurring. Next, check to make sure the wiring is hooked up properly, with the grounding wire in place and all connections nice and snug. Check the wires with a voltage tester or multimeter to ensure that current is running through them. If there is no current -- and the circuit is closed -- something else is preventing current from reaching the fixture. If there is current, the fixture may be faulty. Swap it out at the home-improvement store for a new one. Another possibility is the wall switch. Before you head back to the store, make sure that current is getting to the switch by testing with a voltage tester or multimeter. Look for any electrical damage to the switch or fixture. Are there black smudge marks on the switch cover or fixture plate? Any frayed or damaged wires visible? If everything seems OK, check switches and receptacles along the entire circuit for any visible damage.

It debuted in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow on August 20, 1882. • The fifty-star American flag was first flown on July 4, 1960. • The 4th of July wasn’t officially a legal holiday until 1941. • The words “under God” were not part of the Pledge of Allegiance until 1954. • 1776 is a Tony Award winning Broadway musical about our nation’s birth. It was produced on Broadway in 1969 and ran for 1,217 performances. It was based off the book of the same name by Peter Stone and was made into a film in 1972. • “Red, White & Boom” is an annual 4th of July fireworks display in Columbus, Ohio. It was started in 1981. “Read, White & Boom” is also the name of a concert held annually in Kansas City, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska. • The Massachusetts General Court first recognized July 4th as a state celebration in 1781, becoming the first state legislature to do so. • There were an estimated 2.5 million people liv-
ing in the United States in 1776. There are over 300 million people in the United States as of 2008. • There is a one in four chance that the hot dog you are eating on July 4th came from Iowa - and chances are that hamburger came from Texas. One-sixth of the beef in the United States comes from the Lone Star State. • The first two versions of the Liberty Bell were defective and had to be recast. The final, famously cracked version rang every 4th of July from 1778 to 1835. • The Star-Spangled Banner is set to the tune of an English drinking song titled “To Anacreon in Heaven.” • George Washington held his first public office at the age of seventeen. • The United States imported over $207 million in fireworks from China in 2007. • The United States legally separated from Great Britain on July 2, 1776 when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve the resolution of independence. Congress debated over and revised the declaration, approving it on July 4th. Most delegates didn’t sign it until August 4th. • Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826 - America’s 50th Anniversary.

(is Dave’s investing system sound?)

THE 4TH OF JULY (continued):
Dear Dave, Considering that the current economic situation is nearing a calamity, do you feel that your Total Money Makeover investment strategies are still sound? Anthony Dear Anthony, First, let’s review the investment strategies in The Total Money Makeover. Pay cash for real estate so that you own it free and clear. Invest with a long-term mentality in America ’s best and brightest companies. Put your money into good, growth stock mutual funds – so that you can be well-diversified – with companies that have very long and successful track records. I always have – and always will – consider these to be very sound investment strategies! I think you’re being a little dramatic when you refer to the stock market situation as “nearing calamity.” You can live in fear and concentrate on all the negative opinions circulating out there, or you can choose not to live in fear. I’m not talking about some Pollyanna view of things. Use logic, a little reason, and some careful observation of the facts. The truth is that the stock market has gone up about 30 percent since March 9. As an investor, you’re in K-Mart and the blue light is on! That sounds like a good thing to me! - Dave
• July 4, 1791 was the first time the term Independence Day was used in America in reference to the country’s independence. • In 1776, Americans had the lowest taxes and the highest standard of living in the Western World. • King George III almost abdicated the throne when the British lost the Revolutionary War. • The battle of Yorktown ended the Revolutionary War in 1781. Did you know that the French who fought in the battle along side the Americans outnumbered them three to one? • The Treaty of Paris, the treaty which ended the Revolutionary War, was not signed until 1783. • There are twenty-five official copies of the Declaration of Independence. Twenty are owned by American Institutions and two by British Institutions. The rest are privately owned. • To engross an official document is to prepare it legibly, using a large, steady hand. I’m still not sure what they are or how they work. Could you explain? Brent Dear Brent, If you recruit people and get paid on the basis of what they make, then you’re talking about a multi-level operation. These companies have both good and bad reputations that have been well-earned. Basically you’re not going to be paid for being in the telecom business, you’re going to be paid for recruiting and motivating large numbers of people who will go out and recruit other people themselves. You may make a little bit by actually selling the company’s products and services, but most of the money will come from your building a sales force which then builds a sales force, ad infinitum.. You could make good money if you have the talent and ability to hire and train lots of people over a long period of time, assuming you got in early when the pool of potential new hires was still big. The bad thing is that these operations take on a cult-like level of devotion and enthusiasm. People dive in head-first, and before you know it they sound like cheerleaders and look at everyone in their lives as potential recruits. And remember, each succeeding level has to be bigger than the one above it in order for anyone to come out ahead. Some folks get so cranked up over the company, that they start “exaggerating” the possibilities. Sorry, but you’re not going to work a couple of hours a day and make $100,000 a year! If you make six or seven figures a year, it’ll be because you worked your tail off and brought in a bunch of bodies. Don’t kid yourself into believing you’ve found the answer to easy money. It just doesn’t happen that way! - Dave * For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

Atomic Veterans If you were an Atomic Veteran and were sworn to secrecy about the atomic blasts you witnessed between 1945 and 1962, that secrecy oath has been rescinded. And, if you have service-related medical issues because of that service, you might be due compensation. In 1990, Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act and the requirement for secrecy was voided while compensation was established. Unfortunately this has stayed under the veil for a long, long time. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Program has a Web site: www. usdoj.gov/civil/torts/const/reca/. Look the site over carefully -- the compensation qualification requirements are strict if you want to apply. There are applications to fill out, of course, and you’ll need a lot of documentation to support your claim, especially medical evidence. But the check you could receive is significant, depending on your particular service. You could receive: • $50,000 if you worked downwind of weapons testing in certain parts of Nevada, Utah and Arizona. • $75,000 if you participated onsite in the weapons tests in Nevada, Pacific, Trinity or South Atlantic. • $100,00 if you were a uranium miner or millworker in a number of states. Additionally, if you are the child or spouse of an Atomic Veteran who has died from those service-related medical problems, the check would come to you as compensation for your loss. There is another site you need to look at, too: National Association of Atomic Veterans, Inc. (www.naav.com). This is a comprehensive site, and I suggest you make it your first stop. Read the specific duties, dates and locations that may qualify you as an Atomic Veteran. According to NAAV, there are 195,000 of you who might not know about the oath and the compensation. Stress Tests Help Detect Heart Disease
HEALTH
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had an EKG in preparation for surgery. The doctor said it was abnormal. I was sent for a stress test. I could not do the physical stress test, so I had a chemical one. I was told that the results were OK. No one told me why the EKG was abnormal. I am very concerned. Is it OK just to go on living as I have been, or do I need to do something? I have searched the Internet for information but can find none. -- M.D. ANSWER: A resting EKG is a good test, but it’s not the ultimate heart test. Things can look strange on a resting EKG. In order to find out if those strange-looking things are significant, the next step is to do a more sophisticated heart test, one that is more sensitive in detecting true changes and more specific in eliminating EKG changes that look odd but don’t truly represent heart disease. That’s where a stress test comes in. During a stress test, the person exercises, usually on a treadmill. All during the test, an EKG runs. It shows changes if the stressed heart

You didn’t have the treadmill variety of a stress test; you had one where a drug stressed your heart. The end result is the same. Your stress test must have removed the suspicion of heart disease that arose from the resting EKG. Do you play cards? Your stress test trumped your resting EKG. It’s OK for you to go on living just as you have been. If something was wrong, the doctor would be obliged to tell you so. Stress tests are done to detect coronary artery disease, the illness that brings on heart attacks. The booklet on that subject explains what coronary artery disease is, how it’s detected and how it’s treated. DONOHUE: I was recently diagnosed with the swallowing disorder Zenker’s diverticulum. I am scheduled for surgery. Can you discuss it and its treatment?
I am interested in the recovery process because I am a teacher and use my voice all day. My doctor has chosen surgery that involves going through my mouth. -- B.H. ANSWER: A Zenker’s diverticulum is a pouch that bulges from the lower part of the throat. The pouch can cause swallowing problems. Food can get caught in it and remain there. When it finally leaves the pouch, it has a most unpleasant odor. There are many surgical procedures to remove the pouch and shore up the throat tissue. Scopes are used by some doctors. Recovery is quicker with the scope. After surgery, you will not be allowed to eat or drink for a day or so, longer for the standard operation. The results are almost always excellent. The voice is not commonly affected. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. GEORGE - pit mix, Pet ID 7096572 George is a super sweet guy who has lots of energy to expel. He would love to go home to a very active household, with someone who would spend time playing and/or running with him. He needs an experienced owner who will train him. George has also had a Canineality temperament assessment, and was classified as a GO-GETTER. “Want to get more exercise? Action is my middle name. My “Let’s GO!” lifestyle will keep you motivated to get outside and move. I’ve got tons of energy, and just like the sun, I’m burning and working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I’ll run for miles, chase a ball for hours, and still want to play at the end of the day.

zipsdrivein.com PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Plan Ahead Before Traveling With Pet
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m moving from my hometown to Lansing, Mich., next month, and I plan to drive the whole way. My mom is coming along too, to help out. The big worry though, is my dog “Sparks,” a toy terrier. He gets very agitated in the car. I also don’t know if he’ll be allowed to stay in hotels with us along the way. I have a few weeks before starting my new job, and I want to “meander” a bit and see the country, but will that be possible with Sparks along? -- Jeannie from Tampa, Fla. DEAR JEANNIE: With a bit of planning, you should be able to have a fun road trip without stressing Sparks (or yourself) too much. The first person to call is Sparks’ veterinarian. You’ll need a copy of his medical and shot record for his new vet in Michigan. Talk to the vet about your planned trip and about Sparks’ anxiety in the car. Medication is available to help calm your dog while

traveling. Alternatively, you could try taking him on a couple of car trips before your big move. For example, drive about 30-60 minutes to a nice park, hop out and take Sparks for a walk around, then drive back home. Sometimes a pet’s only car experience is a short ride to the vet, so doing something different may help ease that anxiety. Finding a pet-friendly hotel during the trip may not be as difficult as you think. Many national hotel chains have pet policies that allow smaller pets, and some have even more liberal rules. Motel 6, for example, has a one-pet-per-room policy and charges no additional fees. Plot out your driving route along with sights you want to see, and where you will likely stop for the night, then call ahead to hotels in that area (or look them up online) to ask about their pet policy.

533-MEAL Childress Teams Struggling
LONG POND, Pa. -- In addition to being owner of a four-car Sprint Cup team, as well as a Nationwide Series operation, Richard Childress owns a winery and a museum near his Welcome, N.C., shop. An avid hunter, Childress also was recently elected to the board of directors of the National Rifle Association. Childress’s race team has recently fallen on hard times. Three of his drivers -- Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick -- made the Chase for the Sprint Cup last year, but only Burton is currently in the top 12. In the past eight races, Bowyer has fallen from second to 16th in the rankings, and Harvick from 10th to 26th. In April, Childress responded by switching the crew chiefs of Harvick and Casey Mears, the fourth driver he added this year to his Cup stable. So far, the results have been discouraging.

“We just need to fix all of our race teams, and this is the first step,” said Childress. “I’m not above making more changes if that’s what it takes. I’m going to be looking hard at everything. We don’t have a choice. We have to be competitive.” Dale Earnhardt won six of his seven championships driving Childress’s Chevrolets. Childress hasn’t used No. 3 since Earnhardt’s death in a Daytona 500 crash in 2001. This year he added No. 33 for Bowyer, moving Mears to No. 07. “I had a meeting with our whole organization,” said Childress. “Everybody that works on the four race teams was there, and I explained to them that we would make more changes if we had to, and we were going to do what it took to make these cars competitive.” Childress, originally from Winston-Salem, N.C., was once a Cup driver himself. Now 63, Childress never won in 285 Cup starts, but finished six times in the top five. His best career finish was a third in Nashville, Tenn., in 1978. *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer
