FATHERLY FACTS by Sarah Bates

Father’s Day is the 3rd Sunday in June every year. It is a time to celebrate dad – and what better way to celebrate than to learn some fantastic, fatherly facts? • Did you know that Grace Kelly’s father, John B. Kelly Sr., was a triple Olympic Gold Medal winner in rowing? • In 1990, both Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr. played for the Seattle Mariners. It was the first time a father and son had played together on the same team in the major league. • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was originally named Michael like his father. After a trip to Germany, Michael Sr. changed both their names to Martin after the Protestant leader. • A. A. Milne, author of Winnie-the-Pooh, based the character of Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh and friends off of his son and his stuffed animals. • The Egyptian deity Amon, represented by the ram, is the father of the moon. • Father’s Day will celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2010. • Grammatically it should be Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day, as we are celebrating multiple mothers and fathers. However, it was initially spelled on the proposal to make it a holiday as Father’s Day and that just stuck. • Research shows that over 110 million Father’s

Repairs That Can’t Wait Q: I know everyone is trying to save money wherever they can these days. But some people are avoiding making home repairs because they are worried about the cost. Please let your readers know that some problems have to be taken care of when they’re small, before they become really expensive to fix. Thanks. -- Bill in Minneapolis

A: Sure thing! It’s essential that certain home repairs (and maintenance items) be tackled right away before they Our Home & develop into much bigger messes -- even if the repair needs to be done by a professional. Garden Section Below are five tasks that should never be put off, provided courtesy of Angie’s List (www.angieslist.com). CALL 1. Change your air filters. HVAC experts estimate that 60 percent of all service calls are the result of dirty filters. Changing air filters regularly (every month or so) can save you up to $100 each year in energy costs. 2. Repair leaky faucets and running toilets. Doing so could save hundreds of dollars per year on your water bill. And don’t neglect your sump pump. Check the batteries and update the appliance every few years. A flooded basement will cause thousands of dollars in damages. 3. Check the caulking around your tub and shower for moisture penetration, which can lead to mold. Bath fixtures can avoid premature replacement if the tile surface is kept watertight, and the subsurface, usually drywall, remains OR EMAIL US AT dry. 4. Inspect electrical cords and outlets for signs of distortion, discoloration or cracks in the insulation, and hire an ads@spokanetidbits.com electrician to replace tired outlets that no longer hold a plug. A defective receptacle, light switch or fixture replaced during a scheduled visit will save you hundreds of dollars over an emergency repair. 5. Weatherproof windows and doors. These are the two areas with the largest amount of air transfer in both cold and hot weather. Use a digital thermometer to check the seal quality and inspect the caulking for areas that have cracked or shrunk, which will allow water to damage siding and floors. Once sealed, use a programmable thermostat to help regulate air temperature, which could save you up to 10 percent on your monthly energy bill. Consider getting a home energy audit.

FATHERLY FACTS (continued):

“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its buds become tender and its leaves begin to sprout, you know without being told that summer is near. Just so, when you see the events I’ve described beginning to happen, you can know his return is very near, right at the door . I assure you, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. Heaven and earth will diappear, but my words will remain forever.

Day cards are exchanged annually. 50% of those are purchased for dads, 20% are purchased for husbands. • In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on the same day as the king’s birthday. King Phumiphon was born December 5, 1927. • There isn’t a formal Father’s Day celebration in Germany but there is a holiday just for men called Männertag (Men’s Day). • Did you know there are stay at home dad in the animal kingdom? The rhea is a flightless South American bird similar to an emu in appearance. It is the male rhea who builds the nest and incubates the eggs, much like male Emporer penguins guard and incubate their eggs while the mothers hunt. • Sonora Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day service at church when she thought there should a holiday honoring fathers. She held her own father, William Smart in particularly high esteem, as he was a widowed Civil War veteran who had raised Sonora and her five brothers himself. • Mrs. Dodd proposed the celebration to the Spokane Ministerial Alliance in her hometown of Spokane, Washington and the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19th, 1910. • In 1924, President Coolidge showed his support for making Father’s Day a national holiday. It was in 1966 that President Johnson actually proclaimed it a holiday throughout the nation. However, it wasn’t un-

til 1972 that President Nixon made it an official U.S. holiday. • The rose is the official flower of Father’s Day. Red roses are worn if a father is still alive. White roses are worn in remembrance of a father who has passed away. • Father’s Day cards are one of the Top Five holiday cards sold each year. It is the 4th largest cardsending holiday after Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. • Father’s Day is not an official holiday in Taiwan, but it is widely celebrated on August 8th. The pronunciation of the word for the number eight in Mandarin Chinese (ba) is similar to the pronunciation of the word that means father, so father’s day in often called Baba Day in Taiwan. • Americans are expected to spend $11 billion on Father’s Day gifts this year. The average gift costs about $27.60 per person. • Neckties are the #1 gift on Father’s Day. • Other popular gifts for dad are tools. Did you know there are over 14,257 hardware stores in the U.S. alone? • There are over 64.3 million fathers in the U.S. and over 159,000 are stay-at-home dads. • Darwin’s Frog, named after and discovered by Charles Darwin, is a native frog to the forests and streams of Argentina and Chile. The female frog lays about thirty eggs and the male guards them until they hatch. The male then takes the tadpoles and carries them in his vocal pouch as they develop. The

Talk about a dedicated dad! • Zeus is the Father and King of the Greek gods. He is credited with fathering Ares, Aphrodite, Orion, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Persephone and Heracles. He had consorts with mortal women as well as divine and fathered Helen of Troy by a mortal. • Father Knows Best (1954) first aired on the radio, running six years of original episodes before moving solely to television. • Pater Patriae, a Latin honorific, means “Father of his Country,” or literally “father of his fatherland.” It was used to describe many ancient Roman leaders like Caesar Augustus. Nero was offered the honor during the first year of his reign, but because of his youth (he was seventeen at the time) he turned it down although he didn’t hesitate to accept it the second time around. • The world’s current oldest father is Nanu Ram Jogi, a farmer from India. His fourth wife, Suburi, gave birth to their seventh child in 2007 when he was 90 years old. Mr. Jogi has approximately twenty-one children and twenty grandchildren. • Papa John’s Pizza is the third largest take-out/delivery pizza chain in the United States. It was founded by John Schnatter in Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1984. • What does Father Time have in common with the Grim Reaper? Both ancient, scythe wielding figures stem from the Greek god Chronos, god of time. His Roman counterpart is Saturn, the god of agriculture and this connection brought about the association with a scythe/sickle. • Father Edward Joseph Flanagan was a priest of the Roman Catholic Church. He founded the orphanage Boys Town in 1917. • Jacob Cats was a Dutch writer of poetic emblem books, which were widely popular in the 17th century. He was affectionately known by his peers as “Father Cats.” • Actress Anjelica Huston was in two films directed by her father, John Huston. They were Prizzi’s Honor (1985) and The Dead (1987). • “A father carries pictures where his money used to be.” – Anonymous. The End

(yet another student loan?) Dear Dave, Our daughter has one year left in college. She’s going to a state school here in Texas , and we’ve already taken out two loans to help her out. She’s living in nice apartment off-campus. She doesn’t work so she can concentrate on her studies. Should we get another loan for her last year? David Dear David, I’ve got a better idea. Keep in mind I said a better idea, not an easier idea. She needs to be working full-time and then some, all summer long. If she does this and also works part-time during the school year, and you guys chip in a little, you may not need to think about another loan. I really don’t give a hoot about her lifestyle while she’s in college. No college kid, especially one that’s not working to help make things happen, deserves to be put up in a fancy apartment while her parents go into debt or break their backs working to support them. I worked all the way through college, and so did thousands of other people. Statistics show that the average, in-state cost of tuition for college in this country is about $6,000 a year. It costs about $5,000 to live in a dorm, plus you’ve got books and food and a few incidentals. So, the average total will be between $12,000 and $15,000 year. That means you guys have to come up with about $1,000 to $1,200 a month. I really believe that if you’ll all work together, and involve everyone in the process, you can make this happen without taking another loan! In the long run, you’ll all be happier if you do it that way. - Dave

Dear Dave, Do you think it would be a good idea to budget a little money each month for playing the lottery? I spent $10 on scratch tickets the other day and won $100. I think it might be a pretty good idea to save $90 and put the other $10 toward more tickets. Edward Dear Edward, Here’s a thought. Just stuff ten bucks down your garbage disposal each month and save the cost of driving to the nearest convenience store. Really, now, you can’t be serious! The lottery is a tax on the poor, and on people who can’t do math. I’m not riding a moral high horse. Research shows that people from lower income brackets, folks who can’t afford to be throwing their money away on some ridiculous game, spend four times as much on lottery tickets as anyone else. Rich people don’t mess with this garbage, because they know the lottery isn’t a wealth-building tool. When was the last time you saw a line of BMWs and Mercedes’ pulled up to your local convenience store to buy lottery tickets? The only winners in the lottery game are the students who get scholarships, but in reality they are riding to school on the backs of the poor masses who gamble away their grocery money. Lots of people think winning the lottery will mean life on easy street. The truth, however, is that it rarely works out that way. Did you know that 65 percent of Lotto winners go bankrupt in less than 15 years? Your chances of winning big are about 125,000,000 to 1. You’re more likely to be bitten by a snake, or die in a car accident on the way to buy the stupid lottery tickets! If you’ve got money to throw around, do something smart with it, like get out of debt! Do you have an emergency fund? Are you investing for your retirement, or your kid’s education? If you’ve done all of this, give it to someone who’s hurting, or invest it in your community. Don’t waste it on something as dumb as the lottery! - Dave * For more great financial advice, please visit www.davesays.org.

Caregivers Can Get Help With Medicare If you care for someone who is on Medicare, there is information available online that can make your role a lot easier. The booklet Medicare Basics for Caregivers is available on the National Institutes of Health site for seniors (www.nihseniorhealth.gov). Prescriptiondrug coverage, continuing-care options, a link to Medline Plus and a FAQ are all there. Scroll down to M for Medicare Basics for Caregivers. Go to www.medicare.gov/publications and do a search for publication number 11034 for a 24-page document called Medicare Basics, A Guide for Families and Friends of People with Medicare. It’s a .PDF file that you can print out. Also on that same search page are other helpful publications you can access. Part of the role of caregiver is being an advocate. When it comes to Medicare, the more you know about resources and benefits, the better you can help wade through the maze of decisions to be made and paperwork to fill out. Your knowledge will help, too, when it comes to finances and hospital choices. Even understanding premiums, co-pay

Operation Gratitude Operation Gratitude has been at it again: During the Memorial Day weekend it sent 20,000 packages to the troops. A couple weeks earlier it sent another 20,000. That now makes 450,000 boxes sent, more than 100,000 per year. Each package contains goodies and necessities valued at more than $100 and are sent to individually named servicemembers in hostile areas. A couple of boxes each year will contain a special treat: the keys to a brand-new vehicle. Each package also contains at least two letters or cards written to a servicemember. Word is that these cards and letters of support are usually the first things in the boxes that are opened. We all know the feeling of being far away and receiving mail from HOME. The mind boggles at the gumption of Carolyn Blashek, the woman who started this kitchentable operation. She’s pulled together the best of the best to run this project: corporate sponsors, individuals, school kids, retired military and more. Postage is expensive, though. OpGrat is non-

and deductibles will go a long way in helping the person you care for. At Medline Plus, www.medlineplus.gov, put Medicare in the search box and you’ll find links to all types of Medicare information, including clinical trials, prevention and screening, and financial information. At the Medicare site for caregivers (www.medicare.gov/ caregivers), you’ll find information of getting legal help and local support, finding doctors who take Medicare, enrolling, drug plans, nursinghome alternatives and more. Don’t miss the link to information on documentation: A durable power of attorney (also called health-care proxy) can allow you to make decisions in an emergency. The more information you have at hand, the more valuable the care you give. (Do the math for last month alone: 40,000 packages sent at $11 each comes to a whopping $440,000.) I’ve suggested it before, and I bring it up again: Consider sending Carolyn a few dollars to help in this worthy project. If that’s not possible, write a few personal letters to the servicemembers to go in the packages. They love getting letters from kids, too. by Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had vertigo for one month. I can function with it as long as I am sitting up straight. When I lie down, I get dizzy. The doctor says that this has to run its course. Is there a diet I can follow? I am a completely healthy 53-year-old woman with no other ailments. Do you have any thoughts? -- P.T. ANSWER: Your brand of vertigo strongly suggests benign positional vertigo, dizziness that comes on with head motion. Looking up or down, moving the head from side to side, lying down or getting up brings on a sensation of whirling around. A series of head movements sometimes can put an end to the dizziness. The movements are the Epley maneuvers. Sit on the side of a bed -- preferably a twin bed, since your head has to extend past the opposite side of the bed when you lie down. Turn your head a 45-degree angle to the side that brings on dizziness. Keeping the head

downward about 20 degrees over the edge of the bed. Then turn the 90 degrees to the opposite side and hold there for 30 seconds. Roll over onto that side while turning the head another 90 degrees, so you face the floor, and stay there for 30 seconds. Then get back into the upright sitting position with the neck bent slightly downward for another 30 seconds. If the dizziness persists, you can repeat the procedure as needed. I admit this is a little complicated, and if you find it too involved, have the family doctor or an ear, nose and throat doctor put you through the exercises. What these movements do is shift tiny crystals from one part of the inner ear, where they shouldn’t be, back to the part where they belong. Benign positional vertigo is only one kind of vertigo. Epley maneuvers don’t do a thing for other causes, like viral infections or Meniere’s disease. For viral-caused dizziness, medicines like Antivert, Dramamine or Transderm Scop (the patch worn to prevent seasickness) can make dizziness less severe. A low-salt diet is helpful for Meniere’s disease. The booklet on vertigo and balance explains this dizzying disorder in detail. Readers can order a

Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have white spots and lines on my fingernails. What causes them? Is it a vitamin deficiency? -- D. ANSWER: Those spots and lines indicate a brief pause in nail production. They’re not a sign of vitamin deficiency. Trauma to the nail can do this, and the trauma can be so slight that it never registers on your consciousness. It takes six months for a fingernail to grow from base to tip. Your spots and lines are halfway up the nail, so they should be gone in another three months. Thanks for the photo. It helped me. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. fore she arrives so you both can agree on an arrangement. First, would your sister be averse to putting Lucy on the same feeding and elimination schedule as Timmy? Sometimes this works well in helping both dogs adjust to each other, and Lucy should fall into the routine within a few days. If your sister doesn’t want to do this, then Lucy’s gopads and her food need to be placed in a room that Timmy can’t access, and even then you’ll have to work hard to keep him on his housetraining schedule. Your sister also will have to make sure Lucy only uses the pads and doesn’t soil the rest of the house. Since she’s already invited, don’t insist that your sister pick one or the other. She may go with the second option at first, but then agree to transition to Timmy’s schedule, particularly if she sees that the dogs are supervised outside.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sister and I both have chihuahuas about 1 1/2 years old. We have trained them differently. My male, “Timmy,” is on a food schedule, so I could watch and train him to go outside. I also have trained him to use the doggie door. He is about 95 percent housebroken, but relies on me or my husband to take him outside most of the time. My sister’s female chihuahua, “Lucy,” eats whenever she wants and is trained on pads in the house. Because of her size, my sister is scared of something carrying her off, which is a legitimate concern for both of us. My question is: My sister is moving in with me for a month or so, and I’m not sure how to go about keeping Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s my chihuahua from using the pads in the house. Local Business ~Matters~ June 19, 2009 / Issue #619

Why Are SubAru ForeSter SAleS up over 100%? In this week’s addition of Local Business Matters I would like to share a story about a recent experience I had while looking to purchase a commuter car. Like many Inland Northwest residents, I never look forward to purchasing a car. My experience has been generally nothing short of many frustrating hours sitting trying to find common ground on a price. To say nothing of the feeling of being taken advantage of and did I mention many hours wasted sitting in a salesperson office. To my pleasant surprise I did not encounter this same frustration this time, as in past automobile purchases. The truth is I was looking for a well built, good looking commuter car that would do well in our winter climate, and not empty my wallet on gas. I must have looked at least 20 different cars. As you would expect I called and spoke with many different sales people at different dealers, but one call I made was much different than the rest! Enter Ron Sievert at SELECT SUBARU in Post Falls. To make a long story short, I liked what I heard on the phone so I stopped by their dealership and met with Ron and one of his colegues, Mike Brown. I was very impressed with their straight forward approach and even more impressed with the test drive that started with an off-road jaunt up a steep hill. I was told about where this particular Subaru was made (Indiana), and how the All Wheel Drive works to ensure good handling, a smooth ride, and excellent traction. I learned that these cars are especially good in cold climates due to the engine design (designed after an aircraft engine) which is constanly lubricated, even on initial startup, which lends to the longevity of the motor. In fact, many of the sales people at SELECT SUBARU own Subaru’s themselves that have well over 100,000 miles on the original motor. After hearing this, taking the test drive, hearing more about a recent customer of theirs that brought in their Subaru with 400,000 plus miles, and the way Ron and Mike treated me I was SOLD. I returned a few days later and made them my best offer and within minutes, NOT hours, the deal was done. I was on my way with my very own Subaru and VERY SATISFIED with my purchase. I was so impressed with this experience that when I went back for my first oil change I was able to ask questions of the people at SELECT SUBARU so that I could share this story with you the TIDBiTS readers. It was during this visit that I learned why they have such satisfied customers. SELECT SUBARU believes in three things and their passion is evident: 1). Buiding long-term relationships with their customers 2) Making it simple to buy a new Subaru 3) Being one of only a few exclusive Subaru dealership recognized by Subaru Corporation for providing the highest quality service and sales. I highly recommend this dealer and specifically Ron Sievert and Mike Brown.

Jeff Gordon Still a Wonder CONCORD, N.C. -- Jeff Gordon, who will turn 38 in August, remains remarkably youthful. It is, however, misleading, as apparent youth often is. “I’ve always said, as a racecar driver, that you never stop learning ... ever,” Gordon says. Gordon is one of those athletes about whom the phrase “forever young” seems appropriate. His voice remains that of a teenager, still etched in wonder even as the words coming from his mouth evoke experience and maturity. Earlier this season, Gordon won the 82nd race of his career. Only five drivers -- Richard Petty (200), David Pearson (105), Bobby Allison (84), Darrell Waltrip (84) and Cale Yarborough (83) -- have won more. Only two, Petty and Dale Earnhardt, have won more than four championships. Gordon won officially for the first time in the Coca-Cola 600 on May 29, 1994, almost 15 years ago. “I was thrilled to get my first win here,” he said of the track. “The first time I came down to Charlotte to drive a stock car was out in Rockingham at Buck Baker Driving School, and I remember driving by the speedway, want-

ing to see the speedway, and I was just blown away by this place. Then, getting a chance to drive a car here for the first time, I just fell in love with it from day one. “It’s pretty ironic to me and blew me away that I got my first Cup win at this race track, especially in such a big event like the 600.” In retrospect, that victory was a prophecy. It foretold greatness. Truth is, it wasn’t that much of a surprise at the time. Gordon had already been declared a boy wonder, which is why, much to the chagrin of Ray Evernham (his crew chief at the time), fans and journalists began referring to him as Wonder Boy. Gordon, who was born in Vallejo, Calif., but served his racer’s apprenticeship in Pittsboro, Ind., is now an aging superhero. It wouldn’t be surprising given his backaches -after all, drivers hit a lot of walls -- if there weren’t a certain expectation that the once Wonder Boy is still “faster than a speeding locomotive and able to leap tall buildings at a single bound.” So Gordon grunts a little when he wakes up in the morning. He’s a family guy with a beautiful wife and a lovely daughter. The boy from the sprint cars who once seemed suspended in adolescence is now a man, fully formed, coping with all the obligations and commitments conferred by time. ***
