Recognised as the largest event of its kind in Europe, the 33rd JORVIK Viking Festival is a city wide celebration of York’s rich Norse Heritage. Join us in 2017 for a week-long programme commemorating the return of the Vikings to the city and the reopening of JORVIK Viking Centre on 8th April.

With an exciting line up of over 100 events inspired by the last Viking king in Jorvik, Eric Bloodaxe; including living history encampments, hands-on sword fighting and archery workshops, crafting, walks, talks and of course dramatic combat performances, there is sure to be something for everyone this February Half Term! Reopening 08-04-2017 We are excited to announce that JORVIK Viking Centre will reopen on Saturday 8th April 2017 after a multi-million pound re-imagining. Discover an updated ride experience, where you will be transported back to the year AD960, when the city is rebuilding itself after the banishment of the last Viking king in Jorvik, Eric Bloodaxe. You will also explore the new exhibition spaces, where you can get up close to our unique Viking artefacts and discover the impact of the Norse on York. Your first stop to discover what’s on offer across JORVIK Viking Festival! With hands-on workshops and a special JORVIK exhibition. Explore all that’s on offer across the festival with our friendly team of festival volunteers, on hand to answer all your questions and point you in the right direction in the beautiful surroundings of the Yorkshire Yurt. There is also the chance to experience aspects of Viking life and culture at a series of daily events within the Yurt, including hands-on crafting workshops and even a Viking skirmish! Plus: discover plans for the new JORVIK Viking Centre, reopening 8th April 2017, following its multi-million pound re-imagining.

Discover just how the Norse settlers lived, what they traded and what they wore. Have you ever wondered how archaeological finds make their way from dig to display? Join the Conservation team from York Archaeological Trust as they explain the techniques they use to investigate and stabilise archaeological objects. From waterlogged organic materials like leather to metals you will discover the procedures and treatments that allow important finds from the past to be displayed for the enjoyment of all. With opportunities to handle real artefacts and the chance to get up-close on the microscope and try identifying materials, this is a unique archaeological experience.

Viking Animal Steading

10.00-16.00 | DIG | Normal admission prices apply Get up close and personal with the animals the Vikings would have reared in the city at our Viking Steading, only at DIG! Discover the animals the Vikings reared up-close in the DIG garden. With special child-friendly talks on offer throughout the day exploring how important the rearing of animals was to the Vikings, as it wasn’t just the meat and milk that was of use but even the bones and antlers. All included in your admission to DIG.

Little Diggers: Viking Toys and Games

Play and Learn Sessions for 2-5 Years 10.00-11.00 | DIG | £3.50 (includes one accompanying adult) What did Vikings do for fun? Come along to our play and learn sessions for 2 - 5 year olds and try your hand at some one thousand year old Viking games, including the board game Hnefatafl (or King’s Table), and see what toys Viking children played with. Have-a-go Archery

Eric Bloodaxe is preparing for his last stand and he needs skilled warriors for his army. Do you have what it takes? Festival Walking Tour 2,000 Years of History in 2,000 Steps

Follow the famous York city walls as your guide takes you through the many layers of rich history that York has on offer. From Roman to Viking, Norman to Georgian and beyond you will uncover the city’s rich and vibrant heritage. Walk lasts approximately one hour. From Raiders to Traders, from Tents to Town Houses: The Helen Thirza Addyman Lecture with Dawn Hadley - University of Sheffield 19.00 | DIG | £6.50 (£5.50 Friends of YAT)

This fascinating talk explores the evolution of the Norse inhabitants of the British Isles, from nomadic raiders to settled urban dwellers. Join Dawn Hadley, Professor of Medieval Archaeology at the University of Sheffield, as she retraces the steps of the Scandinavian settlers of the 9th and 10th centuries and their contribution to urban growth in Anglo-Saxon England. Weapons and jewellery tell us a lot about Vikings and their effects on the cultures they raided and settled with- but now we can also look at the humble cooking pot!

Join experts from the University of York who have been studying the storage, preparation, cooking and consumption of food during the Viking era. They have been using pottery studies and scientific techniques including residue analysis (identifying the fats absorbed into the walls of cooking pots) zooarchaeology (the study of animal remains), and archaeobotany (the study of plant remains).

Einar Selvik - Wardruna: The Thoughts and Tools Behind the Music 13.00-14.30 | Merchant Adventurer’s Hall Adult £15.50, Conc. £12.50

Join us for an audience with Einar Selvik, main musician and founder of Wardruna, that earnt international prominence for their part in scoring Season 2 of the Vikings TV series. In this session Einar speaks about his approach and study of Norse historical music and the extensive creative concept behind his own creations. It is that conquest, the Danish Conquest of 1016, that Justin brings to life in this engaging talk in honour of its 1,000 year anniversary. Hear of the dramatic power struggles of ‘un-ready’ English kings and dangerous foreign powers threatening the coasts of Britain. If it was your exhibition how would you display the items and what would you say about them? Meet members of our staff to learn how to arrange and display your own exhibition of replica objects in our ‘Curators Corner’. Meet a costumed Viking who will also be on hand to show you and talk about a selection of real Viking objects from the collection.

Bloodaxe Book Challenge For the fourth year running JORVIK Viking Festival have collaborated with Explore York Library Service to encourage children to read throughout the school winter holidays. For every book they read they can collect a bookmark and stickers, and have the opportunity to meet a well known children’s author at the Festival.
