Recognised as the largest event of its kind in Europe, the 33rd JORVIK Viking Festival is a city wide celebration of York’s rich Norse Heritage. Join us in 2017 for a week-long programme commemorating the return of the Vikings to the city and the reopening of JORVIK Viking Centre on 8th April.

Reopening 08-04-2017 We are excited to announce that JORVIK Viking Centre will reopen on Saturday 8th April 2017 after a multi-million pound re-imagining. Discover an updated ride experience, where you will be transported back to the year AD960, when the city is rebuilding itself after the banishment of the last Viking king in Jorvik, Eric Bloodaxe. You will also explore the new exhibition spaces, where you can get up close to our unique Viking artefacts and discover the impact of the Norse on York. Join the Conservation team from York Archaeological Trust as they explain the techniques they use to investigate and stabilise archaeological objects. With opportunities to handle real artefacts and the chance to get up-close on the microscope and try identifying materials, this is a unique archaeological experience.

Join experts from the University of York who have been studying the storage, preparation, cooking and consumption of food during the Viking era. They have been using pottery studies and scientific techniques including residue analysis (identifying the fats absorbed into the walls of cooking pots) zooarchaeology (the study of animal remains), and archaeobotany (the study of plant remains).

Meet a costumed Viking who will also be on hand to show you and talk about a selection of real Viking objects from the collection.

Bloodaxe Book Challenge For the fourth year running JORVIK Viking Festival have collaborated with Explore York Library Service to encourage children to read throughout the school winter holidays. For every book they read they can collect a bookmark and stickers, and have the opportunity to meet a well known children’s author at the Festival.
