Welcome to Learning with the JORVIK Group What’s New in 2016-17? JORVIK Viking Centre will reopen in the next academic year, after re-imagining the centre following the extensive flood damage sustained in December 2015. To celebrate the return of the Vikings we have created unique learning packages for schools planning on visiting us this year, with unique experiences at our special exhibitions, new workshops and of course, visits to the new JORVIK! Spring Term Viking Craft and Trade: New Viking Tour and Workshop Offer at DIG We are offering schools an immersive Norse experience through our Viking-themed DIG tour and our new Viking Craft and Trade workshop session, just £5.00 per child for the package during Spring Term 2017. Schools visiting DIG in spring will also qualify for a free virtual outreach session as our Vikings spread the word about their new home at JORVIK.
Autumn Term JORVIK on Tour Three Special Viking Exhibitions in York Our unique collection of artefacts will be housed at partner venues across the city for a new, thematic exhibition programme during autumn/winter 2016. Give your class the chance to get up close to the shops and homes of the Viking crafters, meet costumed characters and handle real archaeology in our exclusive schools session at the Jorvik: Home and Abroad exhibition. Continue your visit with free admission to our other exhibitions, Jorvik: Life and Death and Jorvik: Treasures and Belief.
Summer Term Welcome Back JORVIK! Summer will see the reopening of JORVIK Viking Centre, allowing visitors to experience York’s Viking heritage in a new and immersive way. Incorporating the latest interpretation from recent Viking excavations and including more interactive features than ever before, the people of the 10th-century city will be brought to life before your eyes. School visit slots will be available from summer 2017 and bookings can be taken from September 2016. Don’t miss out on this incredible new journey through our Viking past.

The Vikings arrived in AD 866 - When Will You Get There?
Reopening Spring 2017 Built on the very site where archaeologists discovered over 40,000 Viking-age objects, JORVIK Viking Centre is an immersive experience for you and your class to explore, allowing them to see, smell, hear and even touch the past.
DISCOVER
Our new experience takes your pupils back to the point at which our archaeologists discovered the remarkable Viking remains in the soils of Coppergate. Friendly staff are on-hand to explain to your pupils how archaeologists investigated the remains of housing and objects discarded by the residents of Coppergate over 1000 years ago and started to put together the pieces of how the Vikings lived in York.

Exploring our artefacts displays allows your class to get up close to finds from the famous Coppergate Dig. From personal belongings such as socks and combs, to trade goods like pans and knives, your pupils can even handle some of these rare finds and find out from our resident Vikings how they were made and who owned such possessions. Get a glimpse of the different sorts of people that might have called Coppergate home and learn about their jobs, pastimes and diets.
Board your time capsule, and get ready to experience life in a Viking city for yourself! Our ride features stunning animatronics to bring the residents of Coppergate back to life, complete with sights, sounds and even smells! The street is fully recreated from the archaeological finds and learners will hear from the local residents about what a typical day was like in 10th century Jorvik.

Viking Battle Tactics Put your pupils through their paces, it’s time to prepare for battle! Discover some of the causes of raiding and warfare in Viking times, see the weapons that were used, and then have a go at re-enacting Viking strategies for the battlefield.
Viking Sagas Promoting an interest in Viking myths and poetry; our skald (a Viking storyteller) will help you understand the importance of stories of gods, giants and heroes in Viking society. Listen to stories and poetry heard by Vikings over 1000 years ago, help reenact a myth about Thor and his hammer and have fun with Viking riddles or ‘kennings’.
Anglo-Saxon and Viking Costume Learn about the clothing that settlers wore in Jorvik and give your pupils a chance to dress up in some examples. Hear how costume reflected status and find out why it was just as important to be fashionable in Anglo-Saxon and Viking times as it is today!
Anglo-Saxon and Viking Medicine Where did Anglo-Saxons go to get medical cures? Who would treat an injured Viking warrior? Learn how plants, animals, insects and even magic were used to cure ailments of the past. Hear about some of the dramatic measures that were taken and decide which cures you think would work best. *JORVIK workshops are held at our sister attraction DIG, which is a 5-minute walk from JORVIK Viking Centre. What will you find?
DIG is an exciting attraction which enables learners to engage with archaeology in a hands-on way. Become archaeologists for the day and learn how we can use our discoveries to learn more about life in the past.
DISCOVER
Handling genuine objects from the past, pupils will find out which materials survive and how archaeologists sort and identify finds to learn about different periods. Your class can put their enquiry skills to the test, using scientific thinking to analyse the materials left behind.
EXPERIENCE
At DIG, learners have a go at excavating finds for themselves. Sessions start in the briefing hut, where pupils are instructed on digging for archaeological finds and kitted out with the tools they will need. Once inside the DIG pits, pupils can unearth real artefacts from four different historical periods and discover more about the history of York over the past 2000 years. Teacher’s Note: The soil is not real; it is safe and clean so no change of clothing is necessary.

DIG Deeper - KS3 and Up A chance for older learners to uncover more secrets from the past using science and maths. This dedicated, hour-long tour of DIG employs techniques and resources employed by real archaeologists in the field, and looks at methods for measuring, recording and analysing artefacts. With exclusive access to archaeological finds normally on general display, this tour is ideal for secondary students of history, biology and maths, or groups with a keen interest in learning more about the world of archaeology.

Tracks of the Past Who were the earliest settlers in Yorkshire and why did they come here? Investigate for yourself and follow the tracks of the past through the Stone Ages, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Find out what changed for people living in Britain between the different times and examine their tools, homes, and even their diets!
Life in A Roman Town York started life as the Roman fortress of Eboracum in 71 AD and archaeology gives us an exciting glimpse into what life might have been like back then. Using evidence from the fort, houses and workshops of Roman York, get hands-on and piece together an idea of how people lived in the bustling town.
Traders, Looters or Settlers? Why did the Vikings come here and who were they really? Sorting through finds, examining tree-rings, matching chemical fingerprints and looking through microscopic clues will provide your pupils with the evidence to support their ideas about the Vikings in this fun, interactive workshop.
Burials and Beliefs This workshop leads your pupils in an investigation of rites and practices from prehistoric to modern times. Pupils will engage in a debate about how different beliefs about society and the afterlife can be understood through burial traditions and the use of grave goods in different cultures.
Hearth and Home Learn all about the places people called home, from simple wooden huts to great stone castles! Through hands-on activities, pupils will investigate building materials and styles and learn how archaeologists can reconstruct what a building might have looked like from the remains left behind. Make Yourself at Home
Barley Hall is a medieval townhouse, once home to the Lord Mayor of York. Located on the doorstep of York Minster, the building has been restored to its former glory, giving you the chance to experience what it would be like to live over five hundred years ago.

Learn about the Snawsell family who lived here towards the end of the medieval period and how the remains of their home were uncovered and restored. Without plastic or concrete, discover how this timber framed building would have been recognised as a fashionable and prestigious residence.

Experience life for the residents of medieval York by playing games in the tavern or staging a play on our Mystery Plays wagon. Explore what life was like for both the family and the servants living in a wealthy merchant’s townhouse in medieval times and how the reign of Henry VIII affected people in the city. Full Day Experience I Fit for A King Your class will spend the whole day as Barley Hall servants, getting it ready for King Henry VIII’s royal visit to York! Dressed in Tudor costume, your pupils will set the tables, clean the hall and practise their manners. They will also have to make sure they obey the rules of the house and the laws of the country. Will your class pass the test and avoid the wrath of the Lord Mayor?
Half Day Experiences I Tudor Plays and Performances OR Medieval Manners Let your pupils step back in time and experience an aspect of Tudor life for a morning or afternoon. Choose from a lesson in medieval manners, dress and etiquette or take a turn on the stage in our new drama workshop looking at 16th-century theatre and entertainment.
Tudor Medicine A chance to learn about Tudor medicine and how illness and ailments were treated hundreds of years ago. Discover the methods used by the barber surgeon and find out about some of the Tudors’ most gruesome diseases and grisly cures. Not for the faint-hearted!
Tudor Weapons Hear how weapons of all kinds were used in everyday Tudor life, from sport and hunting to self defence. Discover how weapons could be status symbols or valued items of costume, and handle some of these weapons for yourself.
Tudor School Meet the School Master and see what school would have been like 500 years ago. Recite the alphabet, write with quill and ink, and learn to count with jettons. Two Kings, Two Gates, One City
A visit to the Richard III Experience at Monk Bar and the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar is designed to help your pupils get a glimpse of life in England during the Wars of the Roses and the reigns of these two famous kings.

Standing for hundreds of years as gateways to the city, Monk Bar and Micklegate Bar are ideal settings for a tale of battles and glory. Tour the fortified gatehouses and learn about the grisly history of the Bars, the royalty who passed through and the traitors whose heads were displayed.
EXPLORE
Follow the story of the struggle for the crown faced by Richard III and Henry VII in the Wars of the Roses. Your pupils can learn about each king’s ambitions, actions and the impact they had on the medieval city of York.
EXPERIENCE
Your tour of the Richard III Experience or the Henry VII Experience will be hosted by a medieval guide, who will encourage your students to apply problem solving and creative thinking to enhance their understanding of the past. Visiting the Richard III Experience | Medieval Battles and Sieges Explore the development of York’s fortifications and the tumultuous history of the city through this fun tour with themed activities. With a focus on the battles of the Wars of the Roses and their impact on city life, the tour will encourage students to look at weapons, architecture and strategies in battle and siege.
Visiting the Henry VII Experience | Crime and Punishment Find out how York’s lawbreakers were dealt with in medieval and Tudor times in the forbidding surroundings of Micklegate Bar, where traitors’ heads were displayed in years gone by. Decide if the punishment fitted the crime as you explore justice in the medieval city, where King, Church, Sheriff and Mayor all had a say!
Medieval Day Join us as we explore the medieval city of York through three fantastic attractions (including Barley Hall), plus a guided walk across the city’s medieval landscape. This exploration of the York of the medieval period takes in the city walls, fortified gateways, guild halls, churches and the splendid residence of the city’s fifteenth-century Lord Mayor, and contrasts conditions in the city today with those of the Middle Ages.

JORVIK Group Events for YOUR School The JORVIK Group now offers a range of events packages for education groups, both at school and in York. Transport your pupils back to the medieval period with one of our fête or feasting offers.
Medieval Fête Packages at School Venues within a fifty-mile radius of York can now enhance their end-of-year activities, fetes and sports days by hiring an activity, to be provided by our team of experienced events staff. Options include: • A medieval barber-surgeon: on-hand to chat with visitors about a range of medieval remedies, some familiar, some gruesome- a must-see for anyone who loves history with the bloody bits left in! • Have-a-go sword combat & archery: A chance for youngsters to learn choreographed fight routines with wooden swords and archery under the guidance of a costumed medieval instructor. Medieval Feast Evening at Barley Hall Make any evening in York one to be remembered, when you treat your group to some medieval merriment and feasting at Barley Hall! Whether you are on a residential visit or running an after-school club, youngsters of all ages are sure to enjoy this unique dining experience. There will be lots of opportunities for games and dressing up, all before tucking into a delicious banquet buffet served in our beautiful Great Hall. Medieval Banquets take place between 5pm to 8pm, price £15 per child & £7.50 per adult, buffet and entertainment included. Located in the heart of York on Fossgate and set in its own gardens, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is a beautiful example of a building from medieval York. Your visit will include a medieval tour with a costumed guide, allowing you to find out about its history and the people who met here to conduct their business. The JORVIK Group is proud to present an exclusive opportunity to explore the archaeology of the Yorkshire Wolds from the unique and historic setting of the Old Farmhouse at Octon. Situated in the ancient hamlet of Octon, the Old Farmhouse is one of the best examples of a ‘cruck’ farmhouse in the country, with timbers felled in 1670. An extensive restoration project took place in 2013, supported by York Archaeological Trust and Natural England, to preserve this important building for future generations and to provide school visitors with a base to discover the fascinating past of the site and the landscape around it.

Learning in the Classroom
Make the most of the JORVIK Group’s learning programme by using our specially designed classroom services. Invite us to visit your school in person or online using our outreach and virtual outreach services or use our loan boxes and online resources in your own teaching.
Outreach If your school is less than fifty miles from York*, our outreach service offers you the opportunity to invite characters from Viking or Tudor England into your classroom. Using a range of artefacts, resources and activities, our interactive learning hosts will help your class discover how life was different in the past and they can cover a range of themes, including trading, home life, battles, beliefs, clothing, games and medicine. After making your outreach booking, you will be contacted by a member of the Learning Team who will help you to choose a selection of the various optional activities to be included in your session. Virtual Outreach Wherever you are in the world, you can invite a Viking or Tudor-era character into your classroom via a video link. Your students can spend 45 minutes discovering what life was like in these interesting periods of English history. View a variety of artefacts, hear tales from the fireside and get the chance to put your own prepared questions to our Viking settler or Tudor townsperson. You can also have a virtual outreach session from one of our archaeologists if you want to learn more about their work and how finds are used to study the past. Book our specialist session, Prehistory Revealed! to learn about exciting discoveries from Prehistoric Yorkshire. All virtual outreach sessions cost £35 per session. We use Skype as our video conferencing platform so check with your IT support team to see if your school can use Skype.

Loan Boxes We have a range of loan boxes for you to borrow, covering a variety of topics, such as Prehistoric Times, life in Roman Britain, Viking craft and trade, everyday Tudor life and exploring archaeology. These boxes have been designed to complement study at KS2 but can be used by other age groups, SEN groups or home learners. Loan boxes are collected from our DIG attraction and can be borrowed for up to six weeks.

Lunch Spaces DIG has space for up to 35 people to eat a packed lunch, free of charge. Visitors to DIG or JORVIK Viking Centre are also welcome to eat lunch in the DIG garden. If you have booked an outreach or virtual outreach, our Reservations Team will organise a chance for you to discuss your requirements with a member of the Learning Team. For virtual outreach, this will be a free test connection using Skype, allowing you and the Learning Team to troubleshoot any technical issues before the booked session.

Our Reservations team will offer you a schedule incorporating all the elements you need for a successful day. Let us know if you are happy with the proposed arrangements and our team will make the booking and send you your confirmation paperwork- please have full contact details for your school/organisation available at this point.

If you have booked a trip to visit us, ask our Reservations Team to organise a teacher familiarisation visit to allow you and your colleagues to tour the attractions free of charge. Our attractions team will be happy to answer any questions you might have about your trip and you can familiarise yourself with the locations of our workshops and facilities.

Booking Information
Important Information The JORVIK Group prides itself on offering an engaging and inclusive experience for all. Please read the following information for any terms that might apply to your booking.
9. Outreach sessions take place between 10-2pm, but these times can be more flexible around the school day in some circumstances. Virtual outreach sessions last 1 hour.
1. Although we will always do our best to accommodate your group’s requirements, we are grateful for at least four weeks’ notice when booking workshops, outreach or virtual outreach.
10. Pre-booking is essential to make use of the free lunch spaces at DIG and Barley Hall. To book a half-hour lunch slot (between 11.00 and 14.00), please request a time when booking your visit to JORVIK, DIG, the Richard III Experience, the Henry VII Experience, and Barley Hall.
2. Check you have an adequate number of adults accompanying your class. The JORVIK Group recommends a 1:6 teacher pupil ratio. Please note: we require a 1:5 teacher pupil ratio on our ‘Medieval Day’ (see point 12 below for more details). 3. When booking workshops, a minimum group size of fifteen children applies. For information on booking workshops for smaller groups, please contact our Reservations team. 4. We advise a maximum of 20 children per group when booking the ‘Anglo-Saxon and Viking Costume’ workshop; a maximum of 24 children per group when booking our DIG workshops; a maximum of 32 children per group when booking the ‘Fit for A King’ and ‘Tudor School’ workshops; and a maximum of 25 children per group when booking a visit to the Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience. Please note: there are further restrictions on numbers for our ‘Medieval Day’ (see point 12 below for more details). 5. Once you have booked, check you have received your confirmation letter from us and that all of the booking details are correct. You will need to sign and return your confirmation letter to us at DIG, St Saviourgate, York YO1 8NN, or via email to schools@yorkat.co.uk. 6. If you do not cancel a booking with at least 24 hours’ notice, you will be charged 50% of the visit total. 7. School parties should allow 1 hour for a visit to JORVIK, the Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience, and 90 minutes for a visit to DIG. Barley Hall visit times vary according to your booking, but standard admission includes the option of a tour of the house, lasting 1 hour. We request that groups arrive on time; owing to high demand, latecomers may be asked to join the queue or put into another time slot. Please be aware that this may result in you having a shorter visit length than the standard visit. 8. All workshop sessions offered at our attractions last 45 minutes and you will be offered the best schedule available to fit any workshop sessions around your attraction visit(s) on a first-come, first served basis. Half-Day Experiences last an hour and 30 minutes in addition to your attractions visit(s). Full Day Experiences are stand-alone packages- they last 4 and 1/2 hours in total, (usually between 10-2:30pm) including time for lunch. Please note: there is additional information about our ‘Medieval Day’ below (see point 12 for more details).
11. Due to the historic nature of the buildings at Barley Hall, the Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience, these venues are not fully accessible. The ground floor only at Barley Hall can be accessed by wheelchair users. The Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience are inaccessible to wheelchair users, and are reached via steep and narrow staircases: they are also without toilet facilities. Most areas at JORVIK are accessible via wheelchair, but as part of the attraction is below ground, prebooking is essential to avoid disappointment. 12. If booking a ‘Medieval Day’, please be aware of the following restrictions: a) we require a 1:5 teacher pupil ratio on the ‘Medieval Day’; b) the ‘Medieval Day’ is suitable for children in Year 4 and upwards only; c) the maximum capacity for a ‘Medieval Day’ is 20 children; d) the ‘Medieval Day’ will last a minimum of 4 hours and 30 minutes, and terminates at either the Richard III Experience or the Henry VII Experience; e) the ‘Medieval Day’ involves a walk across the city, including several road crossings; f) part of the ‘Medieval Day’ takes place outdoors. 13. If booking a virtual outreach session, we recommend that you check with your IT support team to find out if your local authority blocks the use of Skype. If you are able to proceed, we will need to know your Skype ID at the point of booking. When making your booking, you will also need to book a test session (normally late afternoon at least two weeks prior to the date of your virtual outreach session) and provide a mobile contact number. 14. Loan boxes must be signed and paid for in person upon collection. Please note: we do not accept collection or return by courier. Return of the loan box after the agreed date will incur a penalty charge of £10 every week. If the box has still not been returned after 6 weeks, the JORVIK Group will seek further compensation to cover the full cost of the loan box, as the box will be deemed ‘lost’. If a longer loan period is required, you must extend the loan by contacting our Reservations team. You may be liable for additional costs if the late return of the box disrupts a later booking. You are responsible for the contents of the box whilst it is in your care. Should any of the items within the box go missing or be damaged then you may be liable to cover the costs of their replacement or repair. 15. When booking souvenir packs for your visit, please note that we normally require two weeks’ notice to ensure all stock is available. Alternatives may be provided and all souvenir packs are subject to availability.
