Welcome to Learning with the JORVIK Group What’s New in 2019-2020? It has been a busy year across the JORVIK Group and we start the new school year with more learning opportunities than ever before. The Learning Team has been out and about a lot over the last year, delivering new and engaging content through a range of school projects and outreaches. We’ve worked alongside teachers and museum professionals, both locally and internationally, through our ‘Follow the Vikings’ partnership to share best practice and bring new ideas back to our work in the attractions. With more opportunities to see new objects, tailor your attractions visits and borrow classroom resources than ever before, we look forward to supporting your school’s exploration of the past through our immersive spaces and cross-curricular archaeology activities.
‘Life and Death in Eboracum’- New exhibition at DIG We’re uncovering more of our Roman past at DIG this year and exploring the fascinating story of York’s development from a military fortress to a thriving civilian city. Our ‘Life and Death in Eboracum’ exhibition will allow your pupils to discover how archaeologists use a range of analytical and interpretative techniques to answer questions about Roman life in York nearly 2000 years ago and have a go at some investigation for themselves. Entrance to the exhibition is included in the DIG ticket price- ask our Reservations Team for a time slot to visit the exhibition when booking.
Experience Based on teacher feedback, our Barley Hall workshop programme is now fully customisable with a range of thematic and hands-on sessions for you to mix and match. Choose the activities to suit your teaching needs- your pupils can now make themselves at home in our 15th-century townhouse before turning their attention to the treats and trials of the wider medieval world. Bespoke Archaeology Outreach New for 2019, we have been working with the archaeologists in our Fieldwork and Finds teams to develop a new set of activities to bring archaeological skills into your classroom. Explore how the objects we dig up are analysed and interpreted, and discover more about how archaeologists learn about the lives of people in the past. Turn to pg 16 to learn how to book!

THE ORIGINAL VIKING ENCOUNTER
Built on the very site where archaeologists discovered over 40,000 Viking-age objects, JORVIK Viking Centre is an immersive experience for you and your class to explore, where you can see, smell, hear and even touch the past.
DISCOVER
On arrival, you will be greeted by your Viking guide outside JORVIK where you will discover how archaeologists made stunning finds in the ground beneath your feet, bringing the hidden remains of the Viking city to light. Next, you will venture deep underground to our Discover Coppergate gallery. Here, at Viking street level, is a spectacular recreation of the archaeological site, with videos and images from the original excavation and a chance to hear the voices of the people who dug here.
EXPLORE
Join your Viking guides to explore our artefacts gallery, where you can get up close to finds from the famous Coppergate dig. From personal belongings such as socks and combs, to trade goods like pans and knives, your pupils may have a chance to handle some of these rare finds.
EXPERIENCE
Board your time capsule and get ready to experience life in a Viking city for yourself! The street and its inhabitants are recreated from the archaeological finds; audio narration is by a local boy, Toki, who accompanies you for the whole of your journey, and acts as your guide to the traders, travellers, storytellers and priests who mingle in this multicultural city in the year AD 960.

Viking Battle Tactics
Put your pupils through their paces: it’s time to prepare for battle! Discover some of the causes of raiding and warfare in Viking times, see the weapons that were used and then have a go at re-enacting Viking strategies for the battlefield.
Viking Sagas
Promoting an interest in Viking myths and poetry, our skald (a Viking storyteller) will help you understand the importance of stories of gods, giants and heroes in Viking society. Listen to stories and poetry heard by Vikings over 1000 years ago, help re-enact a myth about Thor and his hammer and have fun with Viking riddles or ‘kennings’.
Anglo-Saxon and Viking Costume
Learn about the clothing that settlers wore in Jorvik and give your pupils a chance to dress up in some examples. Hear how costume reflected status and find out why it was just as important to be fashionable in Anglo-Saxon and Viking times as it is today!
Anglo-Saxon and Viking Medicine
Where did Anglo-Saxons go to get medical cures? Who would treat an injured Viking warrior? Learn how plants, animals, insects and even magic were used to cure ailments of the past. Hear about some of the dramatic measures that were taken and decide which cures you think would work best. *JORVIK workshops are held at our sister attraction DIG, which is a 5-minute walk from JORVIK Viking Centre. What will you find?
DIG is an exciting attraction which enables learners to engage with archaeology in a hands-on way. Become archaeologists for the day and learn how we can use our discoveries to learn more about life in the past.
EXPLORE
DISCOVER
Investigate 2000 years of York’s history as you explore our collections and displays. Find out about Roman burial customs, Viking trading, medieval town life and Victorian toilets through our exhibition displays and activity tables.
Handling genuine objects from the past, pupils will find out which materials survive and how archaeologists sort and identify finds to learn about different periods. Your class can put their enquiry skills to the test, using scientific thinking to analyse the materials left behind. Choose to explore the remains of Viking backyards or Roman rubbish pits to complement your topic of study.
EXPERIENCE
At DIG, learners have a go at excavating finds for themselves. Sessions start in the briefing hut, where pupils are instructed on digging for archaeological finds and kitted out with the tools they will need. Once inside the DIG pits, pupils can unearth artefacts from four different historical periods and discover more about the history of York over the past 2000 years. Teacher’s Note: The soil is not real; it is safe and clean so no change of clothing is necessary.

Tracks of the Past
Who were the earliest settlers in Yorkshire and why did they come here? Investigate for yourself and follow the tracks of the past through the Stone Ages, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Find out what changed for people living in Britain between the different times and examine their tools, homes, and even their diets!
Life in A Roman Town
York started life as the Roman fortress of Eboracum in AD 71 and archaeology gives us an exciting glimpse into what life might have been like back then. Using evidence from the fort, houses and workshops of Roman York, get hands-on and piece together an idea of how people lived in the bustling town.
Traders, Looters or Settlers?
Why did the Vikings come here and who were they really? Sorting through finds, examining tree-rings, matching chemical fingerprints and looking through microscopic clues will provide your pupils with the evidence to support their ideas about the Vikings in this fun, interactive workshop.
Burials and Beliefs
This workshop leads your pupils in an investigation of rites and practices from prehistoric to modern times. Pupils will engage in a debate about how different beliefs about society and the afterlife can be understood through burial traditions and the use of grave goods in different cultures.
Hearth and Home
Learn all about the places people called home, from simple wooden huts to great stone castles! Through hands-on activities, pupils will investigate building materials and styles and learn how archaeologists can reconstruct what a building might have looked like from the remains left behind. Make Yourself at Home
Barley Hall is a medieval townhouse, once home to the Lord Mayor of York. Located on the doorstep of York Minster, the building has been restored to its former glory, giving you the chance to experience what it would have been like to live over five hundred years ago.
DISCOVER
Learn about the Snawsell family who lived here towards the end of the medieval period and how the remains of their home were uncovered and restored. Discover how this timber-framed building would have been recognised as a fashionable and prestigious residence and the skilled craftsmen that contributed to its construction.
EXPLORE
Explore what life was like for both the family and the servants living in a wealthy merchant’s townhouse in the Middle Ages and how York was a busy centre in the north of England. Take a tour of the rooms in the house and make yourself at home; sit on the furniture, handle the objects and take part in role-play of the servants’ daily duties.
EXPERIENCE
Immerse yourselves in the sumptuous settings of the Great Hall and the practical living quarters of the servants. Accompanied by our costumed characters, your class can take part in a variety of fun workshops to explore different aspects of our medieval and Tudor past. Take a closer look at the development of medieval science, and delve into astrology to discover the influence of the planets; understand key developments in technology and scientific thought that helped shape the education system.
Medieval Manners Half-Day Experience Do your Duty OR Flaunt your Finery
Brush up on your manners and don medieval dress for a fun morning or afternoon at Barley Hall. Under the watchful eye of the household staff, experience life as an apprentice servant or aspire to greatness and learn how to impress at a medieval feast. Two Kings, Two Gates, One City A visit to the Richard III Experience at Monk Bar and the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar is designed to help your pupils get a glimpse of life in England during the Wars of the Roses and the reigns of these two famous kings.
DISCOVER
Standing for hundreds of years as gateways to the city, Monk Bar and Micklegate Bar are ideal settings for a tale of battles and glory. Tour the fortified gatehouses and learn about the grisly history of the Bars, the royalty who passed through and the traitors whose heads were displayed.
EXPLORE
Follow the story of the struggle for the crown faced by Richard III and Henry VII in the Wars of the Roses. Your pupils can learn about each king’s ambitions, actions and the impact they had on the medieval city of York.
EXPERIENCE
Your tour of the Richard III Experience or the Henry VII Experience will be hosted by a medieval guide, who will encourage your students to apply problem solving and creative thinking to enhance their understanding of the past. The second part of your visit will include themed medieval activities: Medieval Battles and Sieges at the Richard III Experience and Crime and Punishment at the Henry VII Experience.

Visiting the Richard III Experience | Medieval Battles and Sieges
Explore the development of York’s fortifications and the tumultuous history of the city through this fun tour with themed activities. With a focus on the battles of the Wars of the Roses and their impact on city life, the tour will encourage students to look at weapons, architecture and strategies in battle and siege.
Visiting the Henry VII Experience | Crime and Punishment
Find out how York’s lawbreakers were dealt with in medieval and Tudor times in the forbidding surroundings of Micklegate Bar, where traitors’ heads were displayed in years gone by. Decide if the punishment fitted the crime as you explore justice in the medieval city, where King, Church, Sheriff and Mayor all had a say! Access Unfortunately the Richard III and Henry VII Experiences are not accessible for visitors in wheelchairs, and are reached via steep and narrow stairs. To complement your visit to Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, choose from our fun medieval workshops, designed to spark your pupils’ interest and develop their knowledge. The JORVIK Group and the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall offer a range of workshops for schools to enjoy. Located in the heart of York on Fossgate and set in its own gardens, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is a beautiful example of a building from medieval York. Your visit will include a medieval tour with a costumed guide, allowing you to find out about its history and the people who met here to conduct their business. Following your tour, you can choose to have an additional workshop designed to complement your visit.
Trade and Exploration
Join the company of the Merchant Adventurers, and set sail on a voyage in search of rare luxury goods. Team up with your classmates in a game of risk and chance, where pupils will learn about the perils and triumphs of seafaring in the Tudor period.
Historic Dance
In this interactive session your pupils can enjoy learning some fun historic dances. Explore the social etiquette of the dancefloor and why dancing was one of the highlights of the social calendar in the medieval past.

Learning in the Classroom
Make the most of The JORVIK Group’s learning programme by using our specially designed classroom services. Invite us to visit your school in person or online using our outreach and virtual outreach services or use our loan boxes and online resources in your own teaching.
Outreach If your school is less than fifty miles from York*, our outreach service offers you the opportunity to invite characters from Viking or Tudor England into your classroom. Using a range of artefacts, resources and activities, our learning hosts will help your class discover how life was different in the past and they can cover a range of themes, including trading, home life, battles, beliefs, clothing, games and medicine. Virtual Outreach Wherever you are in the world, you can invite a Viking or Tudor-era character into your classroom via a video link. Your students can spend 45 minutes discovering what life was like in these interesting periods of English history. View a variety of artefacts, hear tales from the fireside and get the chance to put your own prepared questions to our Viking settler or Tudor townsperson. You can also have a virtual outreach session from one of our archaeologists if you want to learn more about their work and how finds are used to study the past. Loan Boxes We have a range of loan boxes for you to borrow, covering a variety of periods and topics. These include Archaeology, Prehistory, Roman Britain, the Vikings and Tudor life. These boxes have been designed to complement study at KS2 but can be used by other age groups, SEN groups or home learners. Loan boxes are collected from our DIG attraction and can be borrowed for up to six weeks.

Get Involved in JORVIK Group Learning Professional Development with The JORVIK Group We offer various INSET and CPD opportunities for teaching staff throughout the year, on a variety of history and archaeology topics. We also organise placements or training sessions for trainee teachers who want to use our attractions to gain experience of teaching in settings other than schools, or to acquire evidence for working towards your Teaching Standards. The JORVIK Group organises the annual JORVIK Viking Festival. Considered the largest festival of its kind in Europe and taking place every February half term, the festival always offers learning opportunities for all ages and abilities. Shaking Hands with the Past - Online Video Resources Thanks to Arts Council England Museums Resilience funding, we have been able to commission more episodes of our vodcast series, Shaking Hands with the Past. SHELDON MEMORIAL TRUST
The Sheldon Memorial Trust Schools Competition The Sheldon Memorial Trust is offering a prize worth £1000 to a primary school in York and its environs to explore 2000 years of York’s history through the lens of archaeology. This package of learning activities will encourage learners to think about multiple periods of local history, changes over time and the impact of settlers using YAT excavations/collections as case studies. Activities could include: • The use of a loan box packed with replica artefacts and resources • A visit to your classroom by our educational team who will provide a day of interactive outreach sessions • A field trip to a museum or an archaeological site to learn more about archaeologists and how finds are used to learn more about life in the past. To be in with a chance of winning, tell us what top three things you and your class would like to learn about York’s history from the Roman, Viking, Medieval and Victorian periods. You can do this with letters, drawings, or even a video: your class might enjoy role-playing some aspects of life from different periods of history! The class with the most creative and persuasive approach will be the winner. The deadline for submissions is 31st December 2019. Make sure you have an idea of your preferred dates and times for your visit ready to check for availability, and how many children you’d like to book for. 6. COLLECTING LOAN BOXES If you have booked a loan box, our Reservations team will make arrangements for you to visit us and collect it. Why not hire a loan box you can pick up on the day of your visit and use it to support your learning back in school?
5. PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION Ask
our Reservations Team to organise a free teacher familiarisation visit for you and a colleague. Our attractions team will be happy to answer any questions you might have about your trip and you can familiarise yourself with the locations of our workshops and facilities. If you have booked an outreach session, we will arrange for a discussion of your requirements with our Learning Team. For virtual outreach, this will be a free Test Call using Skype, so that any technical issues can be resolved before your session.

Booking Information
Important Information The JORVIK Group prides itself on offering an engaging and inclusive experience for all. Please read the following information for any terms that might apply to your booking. 1. Although we will always do our best to accommodate your group’s requirements, we are grateful for at least six weeks’ notice when booking workshops, outreach or virtual outreach.
9. Outreach sessions take place between 10-2pm, but these times can be more flexible around the school day in some circumstances. Virtual outreach sessions last 45 minutes.
2. Check you have an adequate number of adults accompanying your class. The JORVIK Group recommends a 1:6 teacher pupil ratio.
10. Pre-booking is essential to make use of the free lunch spaces at DIG and Barley Hall. To book a half-hour lunch slot (between 11.00 and 14.00), please request a time when booking your visit to JORVIK, DIG, the Richard III Experience, the Henry VII Experience and Barley Hall.
3. When booking workshops, a minimum group size of fifteen children applies. For information on booking workshops for smaller groups, please contact our Reservations team. 4. We advise a maximum of 20 children per group when booking the ‘Anglo-Saxon and Viking Costume’ workshop; a maximum of 24 children per group when booking our DIG workshops; a maximum of 32 children per group when booking our Barley Hall tours, workshops and experiences; and a maximum of 25 children per group when booking a visit to the Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience. 5. Once you have booked, check you have received your confirmation letter from us and that all of the booking details are correct. You will need to sign and return your confirmation letter to us at DIG, St Saviourgate, York YO1 8NN, or via email to schools@ yorkat.co.uk. 6. If you do not cancel a booking with at least 24 hours’ notice, you will be charged 50% of the visit total. 7. School parties should allow 1 hour for a visit to JORVIK, the Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience, and 90 minutes for a visit to DIG. Barley Hall visit times vary according to your booking, but standard admission includes the option of a tour of the house, lasting 1 hour. We request that groups arrive on time; owing to high demand, latecomers may be asked to join the queue or put into another time slot. Please be aware that this may result in you having a shorter visit length than the standard visit. 8. All workshop sessions offered at our attractions last 45 minutes and you will be offered the best schedule available to fit any workshop sessions around your attraction visit(s) on a first-come, first served basis. Half-Day Experiences last approx. 2 hours; this is in addition to any other attractions visit(s) or workshops booked. Full Day Experiences are stand-alone packages- they last approx. 4 hours in total, (usually between 10am-2pm), including time for lunch.
11. Due to the historic nature of the buildings at Barley Hall, the Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience, these venues are not fully accessible. The ground floor only at Barley Hall can be accessed by wheelchair users. The Richard III Experience and the Henry VII Experience are inaccessible to wheelchair users, and are reached via steep and narrow staircases: they are also without toilet facilities. Most areas at JORVIK are accessible via wheelchair, but as the attraction is below ground, pre-booking is essential to avoid disappointment. 12. If booking a virtual outreach session, we recommend that you check with your IT support team to find out if your local authority blocks the use of Skype. If you are able to proceed, we will need to know your Skype ID at the point of booking. When making your booking, you will also need to book a test session (normally late afternoon at least two weeks prior to the date of your virtual outreach session) and provide a mobile contact number. 13. Loan boxes must be signed and paid for in person upon collection. Please note: we do not accept collection or return by courier. Return of the loan box after the agreed date will incur a penalty charge of £12 every week. If the box has still not been returned after 6 weeks, the JORVIK Group will seek further compensation to cover the full cost of the loan box, as the box will be deemed ‘lost’. If a longer loan period is required, you must extend the loan by contacting our Reservations team. You may be liable for additional costs if the late return of the box disrupts a later booking. You are responsible for the contents of the box whilst it is in your care. Should any of the items within the box go missing or be damaged then you may be liable to cover the costs of their replacement or repair. 14. When booking souvenir packs for your visit, please note that we normally require two weeks’ notice to ensure all stock is available. Alternatives may be provided and all souvenir packs are subject to availability.
