Gradient - noun
gra·di·ent
Definition:
MASSING
2 : change in the value of a quantity (such as temperature, pressure, or concentration) with change in a given variable and especially per unit distance in a specified direction COEXISTENCE
INTEGRATED RESEARCH LABORATORY
COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN STUDIO | FALL 2022
Prof. Liz McCormick
The ambition of this work, Gradients, is to design a facility that will serve the research needs of the UNC Charlotte Arts and Architecture community and the city of Charlotte more broadly. The building will maintain as its core objective to ensure the minimum carbon footprint possible, that is, net-zero, and shall aim to produce its own energy for consumption. It shall be constructed of reused and recycled materials – materials which themselves can eventually be disassembled and re-used – while sustainable practices in all phases will ensure a product that respects the natural, ecological and agrarian legacy of the site.
The project will endeavor to tackle key Environmental and HumanCentered goals in effort to interrogate the notion of gradients in time, material, form and thoughtful deployment of programmatic conceits with an eye to the future and with a respectful nod to the past. A modular approach to construction and space making will allow future occupants to define and redefine their own uses.

WEST OAKLAND STATION LIBRARY | OAKLAND, CA
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO II | SPRING 2021
In response to the cross section of humanity that passes through this BART Station daily, and particularly in service to the local community who have long inhabited this part of West Oakland, this Library design aims to invite and entice the community to interaction and engagement.
A library has a rare potential to be a mother, a father, a friend and a home. The goal here is to create a space that embodies the word “Cozy”.
The largest possible footprint of the site is advantaged as a means of reclaiming the land for the community, as gentrification reshapes this largely poor neighborhood.
A series of cuts that analyze mass/void relationships aim to shape comfortable, safe and cozy spaces. A sense of comfort is catalyzed through the use of light and color as material environment, a feeling of safety is ensured through visual adjacency.

ULI HINES URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION
INDEPENDENT PARTICIPATION | January, 2022
Prof. Ming Chun Lee
The Fold, has as its primary objective to foster Justice and Equity in Old Oakland and the City of Oakland more broadly. That is, to reunite a city that has been divided economically, racially and socially by an Interstate Highway system, whose goal was (at least unofficially) to red-line the city and segregate its population.
Through innovative reappropriation of land parcels which were acquired by the city for the construction of the I-880 freeway, we will Fold the freeway back into the community, by removing a nearly one-mile stretch of it; effectively bringing the community back into The Fold –back into the conversation, and encourage inclusion and access for ALL people. The removal of the physical barrier serves as a symbol of the removal of long-standing social and economic barriers to access, particularly for BIPOC, lower-income, and unsheltered segments of the population.

WESTSIDE GARDENS: CHARLOTTE SILVER-LINE
URBAN DESIGN STUDIO | FALL 2021 Prof. Ming Chun Lee
Westside Gardens is an urban design solution for the newly proposed stretch of the Silverline, which will link uptown Charlotte to Charlotte-Douglas Airport. The site included the two-mile stretch of line and three stations at and immediately preceding the Airport. The plan leverages a large swath of undeveloped woodland and deploys it as a central park. The park and various plazas are framed by buildings whose programs include mixed-use, residential, retail, commercial, hotel, and academic typologies. Each node is activated with emphasis given to a specific programmatic need. The Stafford and Boyer Station, pictured here, focuses on access to retail while securing availability of housing and commercial office space.

HOTEL WANATABE | TOKYO, JAPAN
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO III | SUMMER 2021
In this project students were asked to design an all-in-one, modular Hotel, Capsule Hotel, and traditional Japanese Onsen (or bathhouse) in the heart of the colorful Harajuku district of Tokyo. Designs responded to constraints of pour-in-place and precast modular concrete systems. The hotel is to serve athletes of a specific sport, in this case Olympic Wrestling, during the Olympics and then continue to serve the local community thereafter.
The goal here is to analyze the Olympic sport of Wrestling to develop geometries rooted in its motion and kinetics. Wrestling maneuvers are translated into formal elements relative to motion that represent the sport conceptually and facilitate engagement with the sport and its athletes within the space(s), both public and private.
The division of public and private spaces are investigated and developed, with a focus on transparency; that is, transparent borders between rooms.

ARTIST STUDIO + RESIDENCE | CHARLOTTE, NC
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO II | SPRING 2021
Prof. Catty Zhang
The Yellow House is an artist’s studio and residence in one. Set in the Noda Arts district of Charlotte, NC, the space intends to interact with the public by opening its front wall to the street while delivering a multi-purpose program. The spaces are developed from the carving away at the mass with light. Natural light and artificial light are deployed as means of dividing space and informing the program; while color is activated as a material variable. Geometries are derived from a series of sectional investigations of shadows made within selected architectural precedents and analyzing their respective color fields.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I | FALL 2020
The craft-based logics of braiding are analyzed through massing and modeling exercises and are/were further developed as inhabitable volumes. Set in the Crenshaw district of Southern Los Angeles, these volumes become a youth center and park. The braided forms serve structurally and socially.
