JOSÉ LUIS CRUZ Architecture is a vehicle through which I ask questions of our everyday existence, questions of the built environment, of human nature and how these two conditions intersect. Thus, for me, architecture is both the science of analyzing all that surrounds us as well as the art of curating our highest ambitions into these surroundings as a designed reality. 1

EAST HARLEM, NEW YORK
THE EVOLVING ROLE OF THE URBAN STREET It was Jane Jacobs in her book, The Death and Life of
American Cities, who identified the qualities of a performative street as a catalyst for ideal urban living. More than fifty years after her diagnoses it seems that cities continue to grow, forcing streets to accomodate increasing performative stresses. Furthermore, in Manhattan the streetscape has evolved into one in which the only way to grow is “up. This semester-long project, sited in East Harlem, questions how living, shoping and the role of the street as an urban thread might evolve within 100 years from today if the street was forced to grow vertically. INGALLS HOCKEY RINK
dissecting structural purity The Ingalls Hockey Rink, completed in 1958, sits within the Yale University Campus, as a clear example of adventurous engineering and is even claimed by some, to be Eero Saarinen’s most successful attempt at mixing visual excitement to create his own interpretation of modern architecture. I, together with three other peers, worked on a semester-long scavenger hunt to reconstruct and analyze the unique structural qualities of the “Yale Whale.” P ART NER S

ANALYSIS OF INTERNAL SYSTEMS
URBAN EXCHANGE
FREE AS AIR Based on Peter Cooper’s belief that an education should be as “free as air and water,” the proposal seeks to embody this concept into architectural fact. It is constructed with varying degrees of opaque, translucent and transparent layers that exhibit the diverse systems within a university setting to the adjacent urban street. This dialogue results in an interplay of interior visual connections that invite the curiosity of the pedestrian while establishing a defined tectonic edge that contributes in demarcating the urban edge. MODULAR CONFIGURATIONS The concept of the Module as a generator spawned from the study of Le Corbusier’s Unite d’ Habitation in which he utilized the L-shaped unit as a strategy to maximize dwelling space. The study of the module, combined with the Manhattan site, led to an exploration of new formless typologies which would seek new modes of urban dwelling. PARTNER

NAAB ACCREDITATION
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY GSAPP Every six years, the National Architectural Acredditation Board conducts an external quality assurance review to guage the school’s overall performance and to report these findings to the students and public. Earlier this year, I was asked to design and direct efforts in preparation for this review. My responsibilities were expanded and involved ensuring a comprehensive exhibit of student and faculty work, lectures and events at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation from the past six years. ARCHITRAVE 19 STUDENT PUBLICATION After being selected as Editor-in-Chief of Architrave, a long-standing student publication at the University of Florida, I was tasked with recruiting a team of peers that would spend the next year collecting, editing, designing, promoting, financing and ultimately publishing a book that would best represent UF’s studio culture and curriculum. The endeavor quickly evolved in form, organization and content that, in hindsight, renewed a sense of enthusiam for the undergraduate architecture program at Florida among students and faculty.
