Sears, Roebuck and Company 1931 - 135 W Twohig Sears outgrew its Twohig location after about 20 years and moved into a 3 story option across from the Tom Green County Court House. After almost 45 years as a staple downtown did it move to Sunset mall. FUN FACT: Sears was the first to install an escalator in West Texas in the early 1950s. Visitors would come into the department store just to experience it!

1931 Historic Downtown San Angelo is not only growing, because of great innovative individuals with a unified passion, for the 12th consecutive year it has received the 2020 National Accreditation Award from National Main Street America. The national program not only plays a role in preserving historical streets in communities, but supports every community pursuing an evolution of economic development in the hearts within.

Efforts for preservation, growth and promotion are spearheaded by Downtown San Angelo, Inc. Its mission is four-pronged: to develop downtown through design, economic restructuring, organization and promotion in order to form an area of cultural and economic vitality. Downtown San Angelo, Inc. also focuses on the revitalization and preservation of programs to safeguard downtown San Angelo’s rich history. D O W N T O W N S A N A N G E L O . C O M

2 Downtown San Angelo has historically been a gathering place for the community and as the heart of West Texas, San Angelo has been a major center of interest and activity from the late 1800s. The city’s economy expanded and many now enjoy vast offerings in art, culture, merchandise and events. San Angelo is known

for its great, diverse, economy and the heart is the center point driving a culture of growth, passion and development. “We work toward recruiting businesses and help facilitate existing businesses when there’s roadblocks,” Downtown San Angelo, Inc. Director Del Velasquez said. “Downtown

2020 San Angelo was responsible for implementing the tax increment reinvestment zone. There are businesses open in Downtown San Angelo that wouldn’t be had they not been able to get (that) incentive. The more businesses we get, the more that fund grows, the more we can do for more

people. Right now we max out every year. We have more applicants asking for more incentive funds than are in the funds. The more we can do to grow that fund, the more we can incentivize other businesses to come and work and play and live in downtown.

2020 In the next five years, expect Downtown San Angelo, Inc. to also continue its efforts in the redesign of Chadbourne Street as a streetscape, which is an area that engages visitors and will enhance tourism. “That should be complete in the Fall of 2023,” Velasquez said. “That’s something Downtown San Angelo has been advocating for since 2007, and it’s finally coming to fruition. That’s a major project, and it’s going to have a large impact for everybody that visits downtown.”

Today’s San Angelo culture has shown much unity as a community. In May Downtown San Angelo, Inc launched the #DowntownStrong campaign as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic effects and it ignited the successful participation of the community. Downtown was supported by various levels of talented individuals and organizations proving that home is where the heart is. An idea with great purpose, coupled with great weather was an opportunity for all of San Angelo to gather and enjoy what the heart of the community fosters; Downtown is the heartbeat of San Angelo.
