After 13 years of serving as a mecca for photographers and art enthusiasts, Paintbrush Alley – tucked between the 100 block of Concho and Twohig – is getting a “Giant” facelift. 1 2

Since 2005, the area has served as a public outdoor display for oversize works of art painted on the backs and sides of buildings. Led by Art in Uncommon Places, a local nonprofit that brings artwork front and center throughout the city, this labor of love has experienced its share of vandalism. The most recent rash of graffiti occurred in early 2018, after which Julie Raymond and Joy Thomas, the duo behind Art in Uncommon Places, decided to revamp the alley in the theme of the movie 1956 Western drama, “Giant.” The movie, which stars Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Rock Hudson, follows a wealthy Texas ranching family who struggle with racism and the influx of big oil. Because the movie was shot in Marfa, Art in Uncommon Places’ volunteer artists are using Marfa as the alley’s focal point.

“We have had so much fun researching this and figuring out what and where we want things,” Raymond said. “With artists, you don’t ever tell them exactly what to do. You give them ideas and let them run with them.” Many prominent local artists have donated pieces that include portraits of Taylor, Dean and Hudson, tile mosaic pieces, board paintings, pavers and graffiti. There will be paintings of black horses, along with wood cutouts of cacti and boots and plenty of backdrops for photos. “This morning we decide we wanted a car; it will be the back of a car, cut from wood,” Raymond said. “A lot of the alley is antique brick, so it can’t be painted on due to its historical value, so what we can do is put the artwork on wood and put that on the brick. We are also going to put big pavers in the shape of boot steps walking down the middle of the alley.”
Character Leslie Benedict played by (Elizabeth Taylor) in the movie “Giant” is a work in progress by local artist “Inx” Davila in Paint Brush Alley. The Popular San Angelo tattoo and mural artist is one of over 40 artists contributing to the “GIANT” Paintbrush Alley makeover led by nonprofit organization, Art In Uncommon Places.

After its first introduction, Paintbrush Alley quickly became a requested area for photographers to shoot unique photos. Stories were written about the alley, and people often visited to view the art. Downtown soon won awards for its unique, eye-catching alley. “We feel successful because now we have more buy-in,” Raymond said. “I hear people say that San Angelo is so creative and has so many artists now. We had that many back then but no way to spotlight them. This is a drawing card for downtown, and a place where no one went that now everyone wants to go to. It’s given an opportunity for business and artists to combine and work together.” Art in Uncommon Places will celebrate the alley’s restoration May 7 during San Angelo Gives, a day when the community is encouraged to donate to their favorite nonprofit and have their contribution amplified. Art in Uncommon Places works off of private donations, grants and help from volunteers, so it hopes to receive donations that day.
