Tyler Perry war epic

‘The

Six Triple Eight’

boosts morale on Netflix

For some in our day and age, low morale could stem from something like a personal loss, a change in one’s financial or medical situation, or a global pandemic. For others, like those in Netflix’s newest drama, low morale is a pandemic in and of itself.

In the war epic “The Six Triple Eight,” premiering Friday, Dec. 20, on Netflix, multihyphenate filmmaker Tyler Perry (“Zatima”) joins forces with actress and entrepreneur Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) to tell the remarkable story of a group of women who dedicated themselves to boosting soldier morale during World War II. Tasked with a daunting and perilous duty, members of the Black women’s U.S. Army battalion, known collectively as the 6888th, risked their lives to deliver a backlog of undelivered mail to American soldiers on the front lines.

Billed by Netflix as “the inspiring story of World War II’s only Women’s Army Corps Unit of color,” “The Six Triple Eight” is a period drama which focuses on “the quiet heroism of everyday individuals.” Nearing the end of the war, soldier morale was at an all-time low as battles dragged on all over Europe and several supporting efforts continued on the home front. Due to the massive loss of life and increasingly dangerous conditions abroad, much of the United States’ outgoing mail — which largely consisted of messages of hope and important news from loved ones — failed to reach its intended recipients overseas.

Aware of the ever-growing backlog, philanthropist, educator and human rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune (portrayed by Oprah Winfrey, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” 2017) approached then-first lady Eleanor Roosevelt (played by Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon, “Dead Man Walking,” 1996) to discuss the creation of a military unit to address the nearly 17 million pieces of mail for delivery, some of which dated back as far as three years. Thus, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, or Six Triple Eight, was born, and Maj. Charity Adams (Washington) was assigned as its strong and capable leader.

The idea for “The Six Triple Eight” came to writer/director Perry as something he felt called to after having been approached by producer Nicole Avant (“Wag the Dog,” 1997), who wished to film a movie based on a Kevin Hymel article in WWII History Magazine. The article, titled “WAC Corporal Lena Derriecott and the 6888th Central Postal Battalion,” was an interview with battalion member Lena Derriecott King, whom Perry met later, in preparation for the film. Ninety-nine years old at the time, Derriecott King told Perry “that her decision to enlist was spurred by the death of her friend, a Jewish man named Abram David, on his first combat mission for the U.S. Army Air Forces” (per Backstage).

“She got really emotional, saying to me that he had died within a few weeks of being in the war,” Perry said to the Backstage interviewer. “And to see her emotion after 70-plus years, I thought, ‘Wow!’” Derriecott King died peacefully this past January, at the age of 100, but her memory lives on through the power of film.

Portrayed onscreen by “Sistas” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018) actress Ebony Obsidian, the late corporal is honored alongside 854 of her fellow servicewomen of color for delivering millions of pieces of mail in less than three months, which was half the allotted time for the unit’s mission.

And if you are among those who have yet to learn of the 6888th Battalion, you are not alone — Perry, too, was taken aback by the incredible story when Avant first brought it his way.

“I was quite embarrassed to not know that bit of history,” Perry shared via Backstage. “The very thought of that immediately piqued my interest, but it also [made me] pretty frustrated that these women’s stories had been ignored for all of these years.”

Deion Sanders and the Emmy-winning Rocsi Diaz (“Entertainment Tonight”), this brand-new talk show is said to, according to Tubi, “[take] viewers on a lively journey through the realms of news, culture, entertainment and sports, all through the lens of Sanders’ largerthan-life energy and complemented [by] Diaz’s equally authentic personality.”

During each episode, the duo offers a dynamic discussion on current events, sharing intimate and relative interviews with relevant players, trendsetters and special celebrity guests. In addition to expert insight, Tubi has shared that the series features “vibrant segments and playful games that will keep each episode fresh and engaging,” along with “lively debates, heartfelt advice and candid conversations,” making for a unique viewing experience.

When asked about his new hosting role, Sanders shared: “I’m stepping into the studio to have real conversations with people from all walks of life. This show is about tapping into the culture. We’re going to laugh, debate, inspire and, most importantly, we got time to talk life into our viewers while keeping things 100.”

Sanders’ co-host, Diaz, has exhibited equal excitement. “I couldn’t be more excited to co-host this new talk show with such a legend,” she claimed, speaking with Tubi. “Deion and I definitely have unique POVs that we’re excited to bring to the table when we interview guests and engage with audiences. I can’t wait to explore everything and have real, authentic conversations that the culture is missing, from fun to serious and, like Deion said, you can count on us to keep it 100.”

From Jesse Collins Entertainment, with Sanders, Dionne Harmon (“Tia Mowry: My Next Act”), Madison Merritt (“America’s Most Smartest Model”) and Elaine Metaxas (“City Guys”) acting as executive producers, “We Got Time Today” airs a new episode Tuesday, Dec. 17, on Tubi.

Can’t best Bobby: Chef Bobby Flay concludes third year of holiday competition

The countdown begins as this season of “Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown” comes to an end with a final, New Year’s Eve-themed episode airing Wednesday, Dec. 18, on Food Network.

“From a Thanksgiving tussle to a New Year’s Eve takedown, ‘tis the season to Beat Bobby Flay,” says Food Network. For the past five weeks, chef Bobby Flay’s (“Bobby’s Triple Threat”) closest friends and colleagues have been pitted against each other in a festive frenzy, each asked to prepare holiday-inspired dishes that outshine their host’s.

An impossible sounding feat, perhaps, to us self-made cooks at home, but for the likes of Food Network’s best — this season including Ina Garten (“Barefoot Contessa”), Michael Symon (“Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out”), Tiffany Derry (“The Great American Recipe”), Jeff Mauro (“The Kitchen”), Brooke Williamson (“Beachside Brawl”), Duff Goldman (“Duff Takes The Cake”), Amanda Freitag (“Chopped After Hours”), Geoffrey Zakarian (“The Great American Foodathon”) and many others — it’s a challenge that just might prove fruitful, despite Flay’s best attempts to thwart them.

As one of the “most respected food authorities,” according to Food Network, and as the network’s longest-running talent to have new content dropping year after year, Flay stands as one of the kitchen’s mightiest defenders. Utilizing skills he’s picked up along the way, while working on series such as “Bobby Flay’s Barbecue Addiction,” “Grill It! with Bobby Flay” and “Throwdown with Bobby Flay,” this “Iron Chef” has earned his stripes in the Food Network kitchen and will do all it takes to defend his title against anyone who challenges him — whether it’s Christmas or not.

“Bobby Flay’s long-standing relationship with Food Network is immeasurable,” says Betsy Ayala, head of content, food for Warner Bros. Discovery.

“He captivates our audience with his incredible culinary skill, fierce competitive spirit and the ability to convey his deep passion for food,” Ayala continues. “Bobby generously shares his food philosophy while inspiring everyone to enjoy their time in the kitchen. Continuing this creative relationship with such an extraordinary talent is the perfect way to usher in the holiday season.”

“I am thrilled to continue to call Food Network my home,” Flay added. “The food world is always evolving, and having this platform to connect my life’s passion with audiences is a privilege I never take for granted. Stay tuned for some incredibly exciting new shows.”

Closing out an epic year of competition, the Season 3 finale of “Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown” airs Wednesday, Dec. 18, on Food Network.

RICHARD DREYFUSS MOVIES

Richard Dreyfuss and Bo Hopkins in “American Graffiti”

“American Graffiti” (1973): As Curt, the member of a group of early ‘60s high-school pals who seemed most likely to succeed, Dreyfuss had the perfect role for his wit and energy. He’s part of a sterling, George Lucas-directed ensemble that also includes Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins and Harrison Ford.

“The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz” (1974): The title role of a Montreal hustler gave Dreyfuss another significant step toward lasting recognition and fame. “Jaws” (1975): Stardom was cemented for Dreyfuss in the role of shark expert Matt Hooper, who knew enough to be scared, in the blockbuster that also established director Steven Spielberg’s career.

“The Goodbye Girl” (1977): Oscar came calling for Dreyfuss for his work as a struggling actor sharing an apartment with its existing tenant, Paula (Marsha Mason, thenwife of the tale’s writer, Neil Simon). Quinn Cummings shines as Paula’s wise-beyond-her-years daughter.

“Stand by Me” (1986): Largely in a voiceover, Dreyfuss adds much to the Stephen King story of an adventure among boyhood pals.

“Once Around” (1991): Dreyfuss effectively has his “brash” quotient set on “high” as a salesman who irritates the close family of his new love (Holly Hunter). Gena Rowlands and Danny Aiello are wonderful as Hunter’s parents.

“Poseidon” (2006): This “Poseidon Adventure” remake is much more an effects movie than an actors’ picture, but Dreyfuss is extremely moving as a man having a hard time coping with a recently ended relationship when the huge wave hits the ship.
