Roommates for eternity:
‘What We Do in the Shadows’ returns for a final fang-filled season

Break out the creepy paper, because everyone’s favorite immortal roommates ignore one last spin of the household chore chart as the Emmy-winning mockumentary sitcom “What We Do In the Shadows” nears its end. The show’s sixth and final season premiere airs Monday, Oct. 21, on FX.

Vampires Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak, “Cruella,” 2021), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry, “Toast of London”), Nadja of Antipaxos (Natasia Demetriou, “Stath Lets Flats”), day-walker Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch, “The Office”) and their human familiar-turned-vampire-turned-human friend Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) are back to cause chaos on New York’s Staten Island. There to lend a hand, as always, is The Guide, portrayed by Kristen Schaal (“The Last Man on Earth”).

For five seasons, the vampires and their loyal familiar have learned lessons and changed forms while sharing a decrepit home just across the bay from New York City. Together they have encountered rivals, whether they are supernatural — like the coven of witches who run a Brooklyn shop — or a more human evil, such as the bureaucratic local city council. With so many lifetimes’ worth of lived experiences between them, the roommates always manage to get out of danger alive — or undead — but oftentimes just barely.

This season, all of the housemates are questioning the direction of their lives. The vampires reflect on half a century spent not accomplishing much after their former roommate reappears after a 50-year-long nap, while Guillermo considers who he is if he isn’t a vampire or a familiar devoted to his master any longer. What is waiting out there for the members of Staten Island’s eeriest household with a new zest for life? In the upcoming episodes, everyone joins the workforce and travels to New Hampshire, the vampires attend a human dinner party, throw a party for the Baron, conjure a demon and more.

The “What We Do in the Shadows” gang hit San Diego Comic-Con in July, and writer and executive producer Paul Simms (“English Teacher”) revealed that the upcoming season includes some cameos from “the people that we just loved and thought were super funny,” just as past seasons have.

One of those cameos is Michael Patrick O’Brien, creator of the NBC sitcom “A.P. Bio,” who you may have seen in the 2019 comedy “Booksmart.” O’Brien joins the cast as Jerry, the vampires’ beloved former roommate. While they all remember loving Jerry, they have forgotten over the years that they forgot to wake him in 1976 when he laid down for what was meant to be a quick rest.

At the Comic-Con panel, Simms also shared how the creative team behind the show put together the final season. “We wanted to make a really funny season that was not too sentimental or trying to tie up too many loose threads,” Simms said, noting that they tried to avoid a formulaic, tidy ending to the series.

Released in 2005 by SEGA, the Yakuza game series depicts the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and people living in Kamurocho, a fictional district modeled after the violent Shinjuku ward’s Kabukicho. “Simone Biles Rising: Part 2” (Oct. 25)

Get an inside look at the hard work and dedication that led to celebrated Olympian Simone Biles’ triumphant comeback when Part 2 of this docuseries. Biles shocked the world by withdrawing from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, despite being the clear frontrunner. While the withdrawal was best for Biles’ struggling mental health, it led to a massive online backlash. Four years — and a much-needed hiatus — later, Biles returned to world athletics’ biggest stage for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with hopes of reclaiming her throne.

“Primos” - Season 1, Halloween Specials (Oct. 23)

In these two seasonal specials, Tater (Myrna Velasco) and Lotlot (Becca Q. Co) uncover the reason why the summer has been so spook. Then, Tater wants payback for being (Natasha Kline) Gordita’s lab rat.

After completing a rigorous trip to the Fit Farm in Season 2 — and plenty of hard work back at home — Vannessa now waits to hear if she will be approved for skin removal surgery, which would be a transformative step following her recent weight loss. While her relationship with the others is strained, Vannessa relies on her team of health-care professionals to encourage her through the process. It’s not always easy, however, as “irreconcilable differences are brought to light in Dr. Procter’s bariatric support group,” while “some of his patients quickly find themselves caught up in the middle of their messy relationships” (per TLC). Tina, meanwhile, “begins to second-guess her decision when her food addiction derails her progress” (TLC).

While drama brews amongst old friends, some new faces will also be introduced: “Scott, who comes to Dr. Procter weighing 596 pounds and faces an almost insurmountable challenge to lose enough weight for surgery approval” (TLC).

As Season 3 boasts plenty of changes — and not just for the ladies — fans of the show are welcome to take an inside look at “1000-lb Best Friends,” with its companion series, “1000-lb Best Friends: Inside the Episode.” New episodes air weekly on Max, discovery+ and TLCGo, joining the cast as they “spill the tea” and discuss the biggest, most shocking and

Al dente darling: Nadia Caterina Munno shines in ‘The Pasta Queen’

From Hello Sunshine and Candle Media, the mouth-watering new culinary travel series “The Pasta Queen” premieres Thursday, Oct. 24, on Prime Video.

No, the name’s not for show. As a descendant of an Italian pasta-making dynasty, host Nadia Caterina Munno (“In a Silent Way,” 2020) knows the carbo-loaded meal better than most. With a gift for making everything from spaghetti, to farfalle, to ditalini, Munno truly has proved herself as a part of the cuisine’s “royal family,” so to speak, with knowledge that dates back to the 1800s.

After conquering the kitchen, Munno went on to become a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling cookbook author, eager to share her love for Italian cuisine far and wide. She soon made appearances on “Today,” “The Drew Barrymore Show,” “Good Morning America” and more, reaching massive audiences with her impressive online following.

Now, with ample experience under her belt — and a 200-year-old stack of classic recipes ready to be shared — Munno hopes to spread the beauty of Italy, bringing longtime fans and foodies along as she travels through the country for inspiration, before using regional ingredients to handcraft authentic Italian dishes with us back at home.

“The series is a charming, comedic and insightful journey, and there is no one better to take us on this extraordinary adventure through beautiful Italy than Nadia,” promised Sara Rea (“Meet Me in Rome,” 2024), head of Unscripted Television for Hello Sunshine. “She is such a vibrant star who lights up the screen. We’re so excited to team up

bestof ...

with this true Pasta Queen and the team at Prime Video to bring viewers along to share in the joys of cooking and tradition.”

Munno shared her own excitement regarding the series’ debut, saying: “I’m proud to have worked with such amazing partners, Hello Sunshine and Prime Video, to bring this to life. Come on a journey with me into my home kitchen and across my beloved Italy to experience firsthand my just gorgeous world of authentic Italian food, family and culture.”

With Munno also acting as an executive producer — alongside Rea, Cat Sullivan (“Nailed It!”) and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”) — “The Pasta Queen” makes its debut Thursday, Oct. 24, on Prime Video.

BEST BILLY CRYSTAL MOVIES

“Running Scared” (1986): Crystal and Gregory Hines make a comfortable team as Chicago police detectives targeting a drug lord (Jimmy Smits) before they take early retirement.

“The Princess Bride” (1987): Notable as wisecracking Miracle Max, Crystal certainly has his place in this proudly fractured fairy tale.

“Memories of Me” (1988): Crystal, who also co-wrote the film, and Alan King have affecting moments as a son and father struggling to reconcile their differences.

“When Harry Met Sally...” (1989): In tandem with Meg Ryan, Crystal hit a home run with the enduringly popular Rob Reiner-directed, Nora Ephron-written comedy that questions if friends can stay friends after becoming lovers.

“City Slickers” (1991): Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby make amiable pals on a modern cattle drive, with Oscar winner Jack Palance ideal as the crusty trail boss.

“Mr. Saturday Night” (1992): Much of Crystal’s showbiz experience is in his co-writing, directing and acting in this portrait of a comedian’s twilight years.

“Analyze This” (1999): Sending up his tough-guy image, Robert De Niro adds as much humor as Crystal to this tale of the alliance of a mobster and his psychiatrist. The two stars reunited in the 2002 sequel “Analyze That.” “Monsters, Inc.” (2001): In voice only, Crystal scored one of his biggest hits as Mike, a monster thrown by his unexpected affection for a human child.

“Parental Guidance” (2012): Crystal and Bette Midler make a great team as a couple with old-world lessons to give their very modern grandchildren.

“Here Today” (2021): The picture’s producer, director and co-writer as well, Crystal plays a screenwriter dealing with the early stages of dementia as he becomes acquainted with a woman (Tiffany Haddish) through a lunch date with him that was won at an auction.
