Sisterhood rising: Magical group of women emerges in ‘Dune: Prophecy’

Following in the family business is a common life path for many, including Brian Herbert, son of “Dune” creator Frank Herbert. The Dune series, which has once again risen to popularity thanks to Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part film adaptation (released in 2021 and 2024, respectively), was written by the elder Herbert and released serially by Chilton Books between 1963 and 1965 before the novel was released later in 1965. Although not well received by audiences at the time, “Dune” has become a science fiction classic, with the Villeneuve-directed franchise grossing more than $1 billion from box office sales worldwide.

This fall, however, HBO is adding to the saga by way of a modern take on “Dune’s” initial serialized format. “Dune: Prophecy,” a new television series based on the younger Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s novel “Sisterhood of Dune,” premieres Sunday, Nov. 17, on HBO and the Max streaming service. Divided into six episodes to be released on Sundays, the series follows the rise of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and the impact their magic has on the changing world around them.

While the original Dune series is set in the distant future and follows Paul (later dubbed “Muad’Dib”) Atreides (played in Villeneuve’s films by Timothée Chalamet, “Wonka,” 2023) as a spice war breaks out on the desert planet of Arrakis, the new “Prophecy” spinoff is set 10,000 years before Paul’s ascension — which is still very much in the distant future.

According to the official HBO news release, “’Dune: Prophecy’ follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. This is the origin story of the Sisterhood during one of the most turbulent and pivotal turning points in the Dune universe’s history.”

The “Harkonnen sisters” mentioned are none other than powerful sorceresses Valya and Tula Harkonnen, played by Emily Watson (“Chernobyl”) and Olivia Williams (“The Sixth Sense,” 1999), respectively. And although both women have a profound impact on the creation of the magical order and the rise of House Harkonnen, it is Valya helming the ship and influencing intricate interplanetary politics. As such, the HBO trailer paints Valya in a rather cold and calculating light.

“The Sisterhood draws women from many worlds to advance our species and govern the future,” Valya begins in the trailer, setting the scene for what viewers can expect. “The Imperium is fragile. The Great Houses fight for control.”

“Now,” Valya asserts,”is the time to secure the throne and protect the Imperium.”

But, the sisters have secrets of their own, and one man is leading the charge to eliminate all members of the Bene Gesserit before the sisters have the chance to exercise their power over the Imperium.

“Vikings” star Travis Fimmel stars as soldier Desmond Hart, who ingratiates himself to Arrakis’ Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong, “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” 2014) at the expense of the Sisterhood. Fearing an uprising is already on the horizon, the emperor heeds Hart’s warnings, sparking a war between the sexes, between religions and between worlds.

“Jeff Dunham’s Scrooged-Up Holiday Special” (Nov. 19)

Comedian Jeff Dunham returns to the stage with his unique comic stylings for a new holiday special. Slotting Walter into the role of Scrooge, fans of the comedian will also recognize Bubba J, Peanut, Little Jeff and Achmed in the production. But, in usual style, the characters are more than likely to go against Dunham’s plans and send the entire show spiraling hilariously out of control.

This time actors Christian De Sica, Emanuela Fanelli and Rocco Papaleo set off on a journey with Chef Carlo Cracco. Ronny Chieng, Chloe Bennet, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao and Diana Lin also star.

“Drugstore June” (Nov. 19)

After the pharmacy in her small town is robbed, June (Esther Povitsky), who still lives at home with her parents (Beverly D’Angelo and James Remar), takes matters into her own hands to solve the crime. Charles’ mission: to go undercover inside the Pacific View Retirement Home in San Francisco and solve the mystery of a stolen family heirloom.

“Me & Mickey” (Shorts) - Season 3 (Nov. 18)

In this Disney Junior series, Mickey Mouse invites preschoolers to laugh and play along as he talks about everyday topics, featuring silly games and challenges. Episodes include helping kids learn how to prepare for bed, identify shapes, make music and what to prepare when packing for school.

“Out of My Mind” (Nov. 22)

In partnership with World Cerebral Palsy Day, this new movie, based on the bestselling novel by Sharon M. Draper, follows Melody Brooks (Phoebe-Rae Taylor), a sixth grader with cerebral palsy. Melody has a quick wit and a sharp mind, but because she is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair, she is not given the same opportunities as her classmates. When a young educator notices her student’s untapped potential and Melody starts to participate in mainstream education, Melody shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it.

es all five of our Earth’s oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Antarctic and Arctic.

multi-part underwater drama utilizes state-of-the-art underwater filmmaking technology, alongside the latest cutting-edge research, to capture, per Netflix, “the intimate stories of

According to an article shared by People magazine, “Viewers will learn about the migrations and ‘heists’ of the humpback whales traveling through the Pacific Ocean, how walruses are coping with climate change in the Arctic Ocean and fascinating facts about the 75,000 miles of water in between.” From close-ups of the colorful mantis shrimp to all-encompassing shots of orca whales hunting for their next meal, the series touches upon creatures from every ecosystem, showcasing dolphins, sea turtles, walruses and more as they cope with a rapidly changing habitat.

As Obama explains, narrating the series’ trailer: “The world will never be the same once you’ve seen it from below.”

Additionally, episodes will explain natural phenomena taking place below the surface, such as the global ocean current. “Also known as the ‘conveyor belt,’” Netflix explains, “[it] is a constantly moving system of deep-ocean circulation driven by temperature and salinity, a thousand-year phenomenon that links each sea’s diverse ecosystems into one giant life force. From the resilient cuttlefish to the majestic blue whale, every marine creature depends on this current for the vital resources they need to thrive.

“‘Our Oceans’ invites us below the surface to witness the incredible marine communities — and not a moment too soon, as their fates are inextricably linked with our own,” Netflix says.

From director James Honeyborne (“Blue Planet II”) “Our Oceans,” premieres Wednesday, Nov. 20, on Netflix. Solution on page 17.

Magical makers: Harry

Potter cast reunites during all-new baking competition

Wands (and whisks) at the ready: Hogwarts is brought to life through the magic of baked goods during the all-new series “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking,” airing its second-ever episode Thursday, Nov. 21, on Food Network and streaming on Max. Hosted by James and Oliver Phelps — who you may know as Fred and George Weasley, respectively, from the Harry Potter film franchise — this latest endeavor into the Wizarding World brings professional pastry chefs, cake artists and bakers to the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England, where Harry Potter’s journey was first brought to life. There, surrounded by original sets from the series’ eight movies, the bakers are given weekly tasks in which they must create, per the Warner Bros. description, “massive, spellbinding and delicious showpieces inspired by moments and themes from the Harry Potter saga,” each presented to chefs Carla Hall (“The Chew”) and Jozef Youssef (“Inside the Superbands”) for judgment.

Across six spellbinding episodes, the Phelps twins will also be joined by special guests from the films, including Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) and Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), who join the experts for a “dish sesh” in which they share some tasty behindthe-scenes tidbits while digging into the contestants’ creations — like Sorting Hat Cupcakes or an Invisibility Cloak Pumpkin Pie.

“Each week, the culinary artists will design eye-popping creations not only to tantalize the taste buds but that also offer surprising and enchanting visual elements,” Warner Bros. goes on to explain. “Contenders will have the unprecedented

opportunity to present their creations in famed locations such as Platform 9¾, The Great Hall, Gringotts Wizarding Bank, Diagon Alley, the Forbidden Forest and more.”

Additionally, Warner Bros. has promised that a lucky group of fans will be given the opportunity to taste some of the competitor’s creations, invited to join the cast as they discuss some top movie moments. The rest of us, however, will have to wait to see who wins the competition before getting a taste, as the winner of the first-ever Wizards of Baking Cup will have the opportunity to appear in an upcoming Harry Potter cookbook.

A whirlwind of sugar, spices and spells, “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” brings magic to life with a brand-new episode airing Thursday, Nov. 21, on Food Network and Max.

BEST HARRISON FORD MOVIES

“American Graffiti” (1973): His role isn’t very big here, but Ford – whose “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (2023) has its broadcast premiere Sunday, Nov. 17, on ABC — still makes an impression as Bob Falfa, a cocky street racer who challenges the presumed king of them, John Milner (Paul Le Mat).

“Star Wars: Episode IVA New Hope” (1977): Ford blasted off into stardom as reluctant hero Han Solo in the saga’s first fantasy, later rechristened the fourth chapter.

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981): With bullwhip in hand, Ford made Indiana Jones an instant icon, confidently combining brawn with smarts and a wry wit.

“Blade Runner” (1982): With his dour, cynical attitude as Replicant-chasing cop Rick Deckard, Ford does much to inform director Ridley Scott’s bleak view of the future.

“Working Girl” (1988): Light comedy suits Ford well in this Mike Nichols-directed treat, casting him a merger specialist who helps an ambitious secretary (Melanie Griffith) who’s posing as her temporarily incapacitated boss (Sigourney Weaver).

“Patriot Games” (1992):

Following Alec Baldwin (“The Hunt for Red October”) in the part, Ford redefines the role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan in his first of two adventures based on Tom Clancy espionage novels.

“The Fugitive” (1993): Ford assumes David Janssen’s iconic television role as Richard Kimble, the doctor on the run after being wrongly accused of killing his wife.

“Air Force One” (1997): Ford looks properly presidential but plays tough as the United States’ chief executive fights a terrorist leader (Gary Oldman) who has hijacked his airplane.

“Morning Glory” (2010): Ford is hilarious as a renowned television newsman who growls his resistance over becoming the co-anchor of a morning-show veteran (Diane Keaton).

“The Age of Adaline” (2015): This film gives Ford one of his best dramatic roles of recent years as a man shocked to find that his son’s (Michiel Huisman) new girlfriend (Blake Lively) is a woman he loved many years ago ... and she hasn’t aged at all.
