Life preserver: ‘Doctor Odyssey’ saves souls on the high seas

A dreamboat is in the lifeboat on his way to save lives in the brandnew medical drama “Doctor Odyssey,” premiering Thursday, Sept. 26, on ABC. Starring Joshua Jackson (“Fatal Attraction”) as Dr. Max Bankman, the series follows the crew and passengers of a luxury cruise ship called The Odyssey as they indulge in pleasures onboard while managing unexpected medical emergencies.

Leading the ship’s voyage through the open ocean is Capt. Robert Massey, portrayed by legendary TV procedural actor Don Johnson, star of “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges.” Having notably been the bad guy in two recent films — the 2024 Netflix crime drama “Rebel Ridge” and the 2019 whodunit hit “Knives Out” — “Doctor Odyssey” is a return to charming form for Johnson.

Also starring in the upcoming series are Phillipa Soo (“Shining Girls”) as nurse Avery Morgan and Sean Teale (“The Gifted”) as nurse Tristan Silva, members of Dr. Bankman’s medical team onboard the ship. And the three of them aren’t just co-workers. With lots of downtime between emergencies, the three medical professionals have become quite close. If the teaser trailer is to be believed, there is a bit of a love triangle going on outside the ship’s OR.

“Doctor Odyssey” is written, co-created and executive produced by prolific TV storyteller Ryan Murphy, whose other fall debut series this year include the horror series “Grotesquerie” and the true crime drama “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” on FX, not to mention several continuing series across other networks and streamers.

Like most of Murphy’s work, major plot and character details are being kept under wraps until the series premiere, but one exciting cameo was revealed in an official trailer for “Doctor Odyssey” released in August. Canadian country superstar Shania Twain (“That Don’t Impress Me Much”) appears in a yet-to-be-confirmed role, though we do know she hits the dance floor with the captain during a black tie event on the ship.

From the synopsis to the trailer, it is clear that “Doctor Odyssey” has that signature Murphy procedural sheen. Like his previous series, the premise may seem outlandish — how many kinds of emergencies can possibly be called in to “9-1-1” — only for all of the pieces to fit perfectly together to make an endlessly entertaining watch that supports equally-successful spinoff series.

At the ABC Upfronts in May, before the series had even begun filming, series star Jackson spoke with TVLine about what the vision was for “Doctor Odyssey,” saying, “the word that [Murphy] first used with me is ‘sparkle,’ that everything should have a sparkle in your eye.” From the spotless ship to its beautiful passengers and professional crew, it all glimmers on The Odyssey.

Jackson also spoke to Deadline at Upfronts about what he could share pre-production, having got his hands on the scripts. “Ryan Murphy doesn’t write normal procedural television, so the world that this doctor lives in is going to be as over the top and outrageous as you would expect.”

Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, who both recently collaborated with Murphy on the Emmy-nominated second season of “Feud,” co-created and executive produce “Doctor Odyssey” with Murphy, while frequent Murphy collaborator Paris Barclay (“Sons of Anarchy”) directs the series.

Crack the case: Chefs solve culinary mysteries in ‘Crime Scene Kitchen’

Not every mystery is as delicious as this. Grab your magnifying glass and your apron, because Season 3 of “Crime Scene Kitchen” premieres Thursday, Sept. 26, on Fox.

With Joel McHale (“Community”) as host and celebrity chefs Curtis Stone (“Field Trip with Curtis Stone”) and Yolanda Gampp (“Save the Cake”) acting as judges, this popular and peculiar cooking show puts chefs in the middle of an investigation, left to cook a recipe that can only be understood through context clues.

“In the culinary guessing game,” Fox describes, “bakers must decode and decipher what type of dessert was made with only crumbs, food trails and humorous hints as clues, and then teams must recreate the tasty treat, attempting to best capture its original form and flavor in order to win a $100,000 grand prize.”

As with previous seasons, it’s likely that 12 teams — initially divided into two groups of six before splitting up into pairs — will take part in the game. In Season 2, McHale invited self-taught bakers to take part in the “culinary escape room” alongside some classically trained competitors, leaving fans to wonder if the theme of “pros vs. newbies” will continue in this latest iteration.

Further details on what’s to come in Season 3 have yet to be disclosed, but with mystery and creativity oozing from every prior episode of “Crime Scene Kitchen,” it’s safe to say McHale won’t let the bakers have it easy.

bestof ...

The president of unscripted programming at Fox Entertainment, Allison Wallach, shared her support for the unique series following its renewal, saying: “‘Crime Scene Kitchen’ is a fun, fresh show with an entirely original mix of culinary sleuthing and brilliant baking that the whole family can enjoy. Joel, Curtis and Yolanda’s irresistible chemistry have made ‘Crime Scene Kitchen’ a clear fan favorite, and we’re excited to bring a new season to the table.”

Boasted as Fox’s No. 1 new summer series following its release in 2021 — and pulling in an average of 2.5 million multi-platform viewers throughout its second season (per Fox) — the series comes from executive producers Rich Meehan (“Big Brother”), Allison Grodner (“Big Brother: After Dark”) and McHale. The sleuthing fun begins when “Crime Scene Kitchen” returns Thursday, Sept. 26, on Fox.

BEST DONALD SUTHERLAND MOVIES

“M*A*S*H” (1970): Director Robert Altman’s iconic satire about a military medical unit in the Korean War gave Sutherland one of his first starring roles as surgeon “Hawkeye” Pierce. Turner Classic Movies shows the film as part of a tribute to the late actor on Thursday, Sept. 26.

“Kelly’s Heroes” (1970): Sutherland stayed with military humor as one of several soldiers plotting a theft of gold bars from Nazis during World War II.

“Klute” (1971): A detective (Sutherland) gets assistance from a prostitute (an Oscar-winning Jane Fonda) with a missing-person case in director Alan J. Pakula’s esteemed melodrama.

“Don’t Look Now” (1973): A couple (played by Sutherland and Julie Christie) may reconnect with their late daughter via supernatural means in director Nicolas Roeg’s memorable thriller.

“National Lampoon’s Animal House” (1978): Though his role in this legendary comedy isn’t huge, Sutherland makes his mark as a college professor who gets quite close to certain students.

“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978): A health inspector (Sutherland) becomes curious about people who actually may be alien look-alikes for humans in this effective remake of the sci-fi tale.

“Ordinary People” (1980): Sutherland is quietly powerful as the patriarch of an emotionally stressed family in director Robert Redford’s Oscar-winning drama.

“JFK” (1991): In a large cast, Sutherland is a standout as an informant about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in director and co-writer Oliver Stone’s controversial drama.

“Space Cowboys” (2000): Sutherland is part of a great cast also including Clint Eastwood (the director as well here), Tommy Lee Jones and James Garner as veteran pilots sent on a risky space mission.

“The Hunger Games” (2012): In the first of the movies adapted from Suzanne Collins’s popular series of novels, Sutherland establishes himself superbly as Coriolanus Snow, the president of a nation where teams of young people literally fight to the death.
